May 4, 2010I installed Lucid Lynx some days ago. Whenever I try to access Vista from GRUB, the computer restarts. I haven't changed anything about how the computer starts.

Ubuntu :: Computer Restarts Before Going To Grub Screen Continually
Feb 16, 2011I am having a re-occuring problem with Grub. The problem seems to occur about once every 15 or so times that I start up. Basically, it gets past the Samsung branded screen but before it goes to the Grub screen, the computer will restart - it just continually gets to this point and restarts until I shut down with the power button. The problem is easily fixed by re-installing Grub using an ubuntu CD. Things will then run fine for about a week and the same problem will occur.

First time I thought it was just a freak error but it's happened multiple times within a short period of time (couple times this week) so I just wanted to get input on what's causing this and how I can fix it permanently. I've recently installed Ubuntu and I'm dual booting Ubuntu 9.10/Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit.

Dec 16, 2010I followed a tutorial to install XP across my entire HDD. I installed Ubuntu 10.10 "Alongside another OS". Ubuntu loads fine, but when trying to load XP, the boot screen shows up, but then the computer restarts and returns to the GRUB menu.
I saw some threads on this site and tried to type: sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst
In the terminal. It returned a blank text document so I'm not sure if that information was outdated. I then typed: sudo fdisk -l
And got this:
Not sure what any of this means, but I sure hope someone else does. I would say forget XP, but it's hard to let go of some of the games and software I use. I appreciate any responses, thank you.
I tried to format the table as it appeared, but the forum corrected the extra spaces.
Ubuntu Installation :: Grub Error When There Is Only One Partition Of Vista On The Computer.
Jan 16, 2011I am running vista 64x and i partitioned unbuntu 10.10 on my computer.
I deleted the ubuntu partitioned from my computer through Vista and made it all one drive. SO now all my computer has i the recovery partition which is 9.61GB and the main Vista partition that is 287.65GB. That is ALL.
I restarted my computer and it gives me the following error:

I know you have answered millions of questions about that error, however the problem i have i cant find a solution for anywhere.
Now, i have a GParted disk to manage my paritions because i have had this problem before. However when i put it in the computer it only shows my 2 partitions. (The recovery one and the vista one) Both of them are "unmounted"
How do i disable grub from loading through something like GParted that is boot loaded off a disk at system startup? I only have vista on this computer, but i cant get to it because GRUB is in the way. (I do not know if its grub1 or grub 2, but its ubuntu 10.10)
I DO NOT have a recovery disk for my vista computer, ive lost it, however i have the Windows 7 Upgrade disk, but that will not load from the disk when i turn on the computer.
Ubuntu :: Computer Restarts Every 5 Seconds?
Feb 13, 2010About two weeks ago I installed ubuntu 9.10 desktop with a dualboot to my windows 7, which was already on there. everything went fine, but I couldn't configure my wireless to work, so after a few days I gave it a rest and basically forgot about; I just stuck with windows. anyways, yesterday night I installed a program called solidworks on my system. I woke up this morning, turned on my computer, and this is what happened-
it turns on for about 5 seconds, but when it hits "grub loading", after about half a second it restarts. it's basically an infinite loop, until i throw in a cd or hit f8, but I don't know what to do with either of those options, so I'm kind of stuck.
I'm posting this in the ubuntu forums because I have NO idea what's wrong with it, and no idea of where to start. I've got both installation disks, but I don't know what to do when I put them in. I've got an intel pentium 4 processor, and like i said, i've got a dualboot with windows 7 and ubuntu 9.10.

Dec 23, 2010this problem has really been getting at me, I can't figure it out at all. About a week ago, I came home from school and found that my computer was shut down (usually I leave it on), I started it up in Windows 7 and a Malware Bytes scan said it found a virus "clipb.exe". Well, I decided to remove it, and when booting up in windows it BSOD's saying IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL immediately at the login screen. Same result in safe mode and "last known configuration". Well, I decided to reformat just because I didn't want to go through too much trouble, and about a week later (today) it came back. I have no clue how, I was away from my computer. But the difference between this time and last time is, I can't start ubuntu at all. period. It gets to grub, and then after that gets to a black screen with no progress. The only thing I can do is ctrl+alt+dlt which restarts the computer.

Jul 31, 2010I'm running Ubuntu 10.04, and ever since last upgrade a couple of days ago (I think), everytime I hit shutdown on the gnome-panel (admittedly, I haven't tried the command line shutdown) the computer restarts itself. This computer is dual-booted with Win 7, and the shutdown command there properly halts the system.

When I put the disk in and tried the demo and full installation option (or something along those lines), and then restarted my computer, it came up to the start up screen, and asked me if I wanted to run Ubuntu or Windows Vista. So I chose Ubuntu it came to the motherboard screen or whatever and that's it. Nothing else happened, I waited for about 20-30 minutes and it was still there.
So that's my issue, I tried the second option about installing inside of windows but for some reason I just get an error message saying I can't do that whenever it finishes loading. I'm trying to install the latest version 10.10, my computer definitely has the memory for it all

Jul 11, 2011My laptop restarts itself frequently - full restart back through the bios screen to the bootloader, not just logging-out. It happens in Ubuntu 11.04 (32 bit and 64 bit), the Gnome 3 live CD from [URL] (the Fedora based one, run from a USB stick) and even from the GRUB bootloader menu. I have tried two different harddrives and two sets of RAM (all combinations) and the restarts still occur. They even happen when the hard drive is removed and Ubuntu 11.04 is booted from USB. Windows XP Media Center is also installed on the laptop too but the restarts have never happened when in Windows (even though they can happen in the bootloader!).
The memtest86 GRUB menu entry loads the blue screen with the title and memory info etc. but it seems to stop there and I don't think it's actually doing any tests, so I haven't been able to do a memory test. In Windows I have not installed any wireless network or 4-in-1 card reader drivers (among others probably), which is a possible reason why it does not restart in Windows, although I don't think GRUB has drivers for either of these devices either. My laptop is an Acer Aspire 5630 with the following hardware:
CPU: Intel Core 2 5500 (1.66Ghz)
Memory: 2GiB DDR2
Graphics: Intel 945 (integrated)
Audio: Intel HD audio with Realtek codec
Wireless: Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG [Golan]
It does seem that sometimes the restarts are caused by touching the keyboard (i.e. they happen exactly when I hit a key) but they also sometimes occur when I am not even touching the computer at all.

Jan 20, 2009I updated a RHEL 4 system today using up2date and when the system rebooted it just said "GRUB" on the screen for a few seconds and then restarted (and did this over and over and over).
I booted from a rescue CD and was going to reinstall grub.
Here's the kicker: this machine has two hard drives configured with software RAID 1, and I don't want to screw up the mirroring by tinkering with grub.
/etc/fstab shows that /boot is at /dev/md0 but "/sbin/grub-install /dev/md0" doesn't work ("/dev/md0 does not have any corresponding BIOS drive").
I have a bad feeling that if I do "/sbin/grub-install /dev/hda1" that I'm going to screw up my mirroring.

May 6, 2011I just installed the newest version of Xubuntu using the LiveCD, I chose to install it alongside my current installation of Windows 7, everything went well it seemed, but now when I choose Windows 7 under the GRUB menu it just restarts my system and then takes me back to the grub menu, Xubuntu works fine though and boots fine, I tried sudo update-grub, didn't fix it.Heres the boot info from a script I found, but being rather poor when it comes to diagnosing Linux, I figured it'd be best to post this and see

Ubuntu :: Get The Version Of GRUB / GRUB-legacy To Boot Any Recent Windows 64 Beyond XP (Vista Or 7)
Dec 20, 2010I've been using Linux for over a decade, so no need to worry about the obvious. I'm positive that I have my partitions/install correct. What has me baffled is that Fedora 14, which uses GRUB 0.97 (GRUB legacy) - boots Windows flawlessly every single time on the same hardware, but Ubuntu's (or the upstream Debian's) GRUB legacy do not - even though they are based on the same upstream code from the GNU Savannah servers.
No matter what I've tried I cannot get the Debian or Ubuntu version of GRUB/GRUB-legacy to boot any recent Windows 64 beyond XP (Vista or 7). All that it does is resets the computer when Windows attempts to boot, without an error. GRUB is notoriously difficult to compile, so before I try to compile code from RedHat's archives - any thoughts,experiences, similar issues - whatever?

Ubuntu :: Accessing Server From Any Computer?
Aug 1, 2010I would like to have a server set up at home and be able to access it using a front end that I would boot from a USB drive. The reason I would do this is because at my university all of the computers are horribly slow, I have a server at home that is fast, I would sit down at one of the computers use a USB drive to boot up the computer and use it as a front end, the computer at home would be the backend. Is this doable? if so how?

Jan 9, 2011I am using SSH forwarding for accessing particular ports of a distant computer no problem. I also want to access another computer`s ports as if they are local without individually forwarding ports. In a way this distant computer will become a local computer over the internet. So instead of having localforwarding in my SSH config I just want to be able to say that this IP adress will accept all the port connections, butall those connections will be forwarded to a distant computer over the internet.

Aug 8, 2010I've just added my wife as a seperate user on my desktop and have a question about shared network folders. So /etc/fstab mounts network folders from a second computer and until today I've mounted them to /home/David/NetworkData
This of course means that when my wife logs in she won't see them since they're not mounted to her home folder. So what folder should I use and what tricks so that we both have it visible and accessible in Places from the top menu?
Ubuntu Networking :: Info For Accessing Shares On A Windows 7 Computer?
Dec 29, 2010I just got my Ubuntu 10.10 laptop to finally be able to access my Windows 7 Professional's shares, and I'd like to share how I got it working. Whenever I would go to Places > Network on Ubuntu, and then double click on my Windows computer (sometimes after finding it in Windows Network > {workgroup name}), it would immediately bring up a box saying "Password required for {computer name}". My Windows password wouldn't work here, but I didn't even want to be asked for a password. In Windows, under Network and Sharing Center > Choose homegroup and sharing options > Change advanced sharing settings..., Turn off password protected sharing was already selected.
So, I eventually found out that samba (the program Linux uses to talk with Microsoft's SMB network share protocol) has a bug of sorts. The format of the SMB packets coming from a clean Windows 7 is known by samba. However, if you install Windows Live Sign-In Assistant (which is provided through Microsoft Update) on Windows 7, the packets coming from Windows 7 are modified, and samba can not handle this. A patch has been written for samba, but Ubuntu's repositories (which has samba version 2:3.5.4~dfsg-1ubuntu8.1) does not yet have that patch.
Also, it seems Microsoft has stopped Windows Live Sign-In Assistant from appearing in Programs and Features. It doesn't appear even if you specifically download and install it separately. I did, however, notice that the installer calls itself Windows Live Essentials 2011. So I found that in Programs and Features, and uninstalled it. It asked which components I wanted to uninstall, and I selected all of them. Rebooted Windows, and now I can access the share no problem. I also grabbed the offending packet using Wireshark before and after that uninstall. The packet is indeed different. Specifically, without Windows Live Essentials 2011, there is no mechToken in the packet.
The current version of samba available is 3.5.6. I may try downloading and compiling that later, and see if it deals with the change that Windows Live Essentials 2011 makes OK. Also, it may be possible to get the share working without uninstalling every single Windows Live Essentials 2011 component. You may want to try that if you would like to keep a component.

Ubuntu :: 9.10 -- Accessing The GRUB Menu?
Jan 18, 2010It took me 3 shots at installing 9.10 (some people are just a little slow) in dual mode with Vista, but I finally got it right. As a by-product of stumbling around like that I now have multiple entries in the GRUB menu and would like to remove the ones I no longer need. How do I do that? I assume each menu entry represents a chunk of code that is, likewise, no longer needed. I would like to free up that space. How can I make sure I'm deleting the correct version?I also wonder how I can copy/paste the menu here to make it easier for all to see.Finally, I assume the latest entry in the menu is shown first. Is there any way to get at time and date when entries are made

Jan 3, 2010I recently upgraded to win7 (home premium 64bit) from win vista and everything went well. But when i was installing ubuntu i noticed that win vista was taking up part of the C drive (like 10 gigs!) (i saw this in the part of the instalation where you set the ubuntu partition.) SO anyway i was wondering if anyone knew a way to completely get rid of the vista kernel and free up that space its taking up.

Aug 9, 2009Today I noticed my sdl modem flashing away when I had no internet access programs active as far as I was aware. I did a 'ps ax' to see what was running. I saw nothing that warranted internet access. I didn't recognize the gvfsd-computer process and tried finding documentation about it on my system. I began to feel uncomfortable when I couldn't find anything showing what it was. Finally, I killed the process and the internet access immediately stopped. Research on the net showed that gvfsd-computer is a file browser. I find this very disturbing. Why was a file browser accessing my disk drive (the light was flashing) and why was it accessing the internet without my requesting such an action?

Feb 25, 2010Is there a way to access the list of boot options from Ubuntu? I don't want to change the options, just have someone access the information, then copy and paste it in an email so I can see what the heck is going on with their computer.
The problem is this:
User has 2 physical drives.
Drive 1 has XP
Drive 2 has another version of XP on it as well as Ubuntu.
We want the computer to have the option to boot into XP on Drive 1 and Ubuntu on Drive 2. Booting into XP on Drive 2 is an option.
We can get into Ubuntu, and XP on the 2nd Drive, but not XP on the 1st drive.

Jan 22, 2010I have a Verizon Droid Eris, an Android phone that has not yet been rooted. Due to the lack of root capabilities the only way to tether my phone is through PDANet for Android. Unfortunately there is no Linux version of PDANet, so the only computer I can tether my phone with is my laptop which is running Vista.
I also have a desktop running Koala, which is ultimately the computer I want to get connected. I'm hoping that there is some way I can use Internet Connection Sharing on the laptop to accomplish my goal, but I haven't had much luck so far. I don't have a crossover cable either so I would prefer to connect the laptop and the desktop via my Belkin F5D7230-4 wireless router.
Fedora Installation :: Install F14 On A Computer That Has Vista On It?
May 1, 2011trying to install F14 on a computer that has Vista on it. I chose the option for it to shrink my existing partition since it takes up the whole hard drive. On the next screen I choose my install drive... then it asks me (dont remember verbatim) by how much do I want to shrink the current partition? I put 200 (I assume its GB... is it MB?) and then it said shrink failed and then takes me back. Is that question on how much I want to shrink have to do with how much space I'm putting on the new F14 partition or how much I'm leaving on the windows partition?
