Ubuntu :: View Wireless Networks Icon Has Disappeared

Jan 28, 2011

I just upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04 LTS from 9.10 and the icon that lets me view and choose wireless networks to connect to has mysteriously disappeared. I did the whole "Add to Panel" thing and added the "Network Connections" icon to my task bar, but for all the searching through that and other things like System -> Preferences -> Startup Applications, I just can't find a solution! The Network Preferences still has the list of all the wireless networks I have connected to in the past. It still connects to my home network automatically (although I did have to delete another neighboring network from the Network Preferences list so it only has one auto connection to connect to). So where in the world did my icon go? It was so great. Left click to see all local wireless networks and to connect. Right click to turn off networking or wireless.

Ubuntu :: Wireless Tray Icon Is Turning A Wireless Icon?

May 25, 2010

I have Ubuntu 10.04 installed on a laptop of mine, and also a desktop. On this laptop, it's a clean install and I'm having a weird issue with the panel on the top of thescreen.ometimes when I start up the computer and login, I get two noticeable quirks. Instead of having the wireless icon in the tray next to the volume, I have two volume controls next to each other. The one icon, that takes place of the wireless icon, is not functional. The other volume icon functions as normal.

The other quirk is that my power button, used for choosing to logout, shutdown, etc, isappears. Instead, it shows two of my username next to each other (one is the legitimate one that lets you set your away status and such). And in place of the power button, is another username menu, but it is cut off by the edge of the screen and doesn't function.Has anybody had this problem before? Is there some kind of package I can update or reinstall to try fixing this? Sometimes the power button will be fine, but the volume icon will still double up.

Code:

Meaning that it shows the MATLAB icon in the taskbar and the Run Applications dialog when I type in gnome-terminal.

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Network Icon Shows "lock" Icon When Trying To Connect

May 16, 2010

3 computers in the house run various windows based programs and everything is fine with them connecting to the internet as far as putting in the security password to log in and get online. My old back up computer that I use in the basement that has Ubuntu 9.10 was working fine with the secured network situation up until today.I booted up the computer this morning and it automatically connected as it typically does and I was reading some email and then the computer froze, which on rare occasions it does.

Upon reboot I got a window that asked for the password for the Network Manager Applet which I supplied and then it asked for the password for the secured internet connection which I supplied. It would not connect. After numerous tries of disabling the wireless and enabling the wireless and entering the Network Manager Applet password and the secured internet password I still get no connection.

I notice that when it is trying to connect, the window comes up on the screen that shows that there is reception from the modem, but there is also a little "lock" icon like I'm locked out of the connection.I finally found a way to get rid of the Network Manager Applet password problem but that still didn't alleviate the connection problem.

Ubuntu / Apple :: REFIT Shows Extra Icon?

Feb 10, 2011

I had my MacBook configured with a triple boot (Windows 7, Mac OSX and Ubuntu 10.04). Everything was working perfectly until I decided to upgrade to Ubuntu 10.10 and screwed everything up haha.

I formated the Ubuntu partition and installed 10.10 on it, but I made the mistake of not selecting the correct place for the boot loader. I went the non confusing way and decided to format the Ubuntu and Windows 7 partition to start all over again.

The problem si this, for some reason rEFIT shows a Linux partition when there isn't any, I just have my HD partitioned like this:

This is what rEFIT shows:

The partitions are empty, I haven't installed any OS yet.

Do you know how can I delete that extra Linux icon?

Ubuntu Installation :: Shutdown/Power Icon On Far Right Top Panel Disappeared?

Apr 3, 2011

After a recent upgrade, the red power icon in the far right of the upper panel disappeared. In its place is a half obscured copy of my user name, which appears right next to my user name (along with the chat icon). The chat icon/user name is functional, as it is supposed to be, but the half obscured user name that replaced my shutdown/restart power icon is just a bug, and has no function. Not only is it unsightly, but I miss the power icon. Yes, I can right-click on the panel and add one, but it doesn't allow me to drag it all the way to the far upper-right corner, where it is supposed to be located... I found this post in another thread: sudo apt-get install indicator-applet-session, but it did nothing to solve my problem.. I'm running 64-bit 10.10, btw, if that makes any difference.

Ubuntu Networking :: Router Access - No Internet After NM Icon Disappeared

Apr 28, 2011

Today I set my HPG50 with Ubuntu 10.10. I used network install disk, then tasksel to add Ubuntu Desktop. Everything was fine, I set up my samba shares and a few other things. I had the NM icon on the panel but did have to configure. I was on wired connection and I could surf no problem. When I went to set up the wireless, I noticed the icon was gone. I know it was there after the install. At some point the network manager icon disappeared, not sure when because I could still access the router and internet. I spent a few hours surfing google and the forums trying to find an answer. Then, after running update and upgrade I lost internet. Even though I could see the router, I connected straight to the modem, still no internet access. I unplugged the cable from that machine and plugged it into my other system and I could surf just fine.

It was clear that nm-applet was running from running nm-applet at the terminal - nm-applet - "An instance of nm-applet is already running - Warn Couldn't initialize the D-Bus manager. nm-tool - State - connected, Driver r8169, State Unmanaged, Default no. NetworkManager.State - All three entries are set to "true". It seems clear that some other app is managing my connection as I can access the router and am currently serving video to my apple tv from this system. How do I find which app is managing my connection?
