Ubuntu Networking :: Network Manager Applet Disappeared - How To Get It Back

Jul 1, 2010

The network manager applet has disappeared from my top panel so now I cannot see what local wireless networks are available. I just came from the library and was unable to connect to their wi-fi because the computer wasn't trying to detect it. All I have is a network connections applet that seems fairly useless as it just gives me info on networks I've used in the past and not on any currently available networks. How do I get this Network Manager back and functioning?

Ubuntu Networking :: UNR Network Manager Applet Disappeared / Get It Back?

Aug 21, 2010

Yesterday while trying (unsuccessfully) to get a new Bluetooth dongle set up I lost the network manager applet. When I rebooted, after giving up on Bluetooth in Ubuntu, I had no way of connecting to my wireless network. In command line (iwconfig & iwlist scan) I was able to see the wireless router. So the wireless card is working correctly. How do I reinstall the network manager applet? Oh even when use a wired connection to the router there is no connection.

Ubuntu Networking :: Nm-applet Disappeared After Using Pppoeconf?

Mar 25, 2011

i have some trouble connecting to the wireless of the dormitery where i live in. so that is what i already did: connecting to the hidden wireless network via nm-applet i typed in my personal user data using "sudo pppoeconf" connecting to the internet using "pon dsl-provider"

An instance of nm-applet is already running.

if i end nm-applet using the system monitor and try to restart it again i get the following output:

Fedora :: NetworkManager Applet Disappeared In F13?

Jul 26, 2010

I just upgraded (as a fresh install) to Fedora 13. In so doing I kept the old /home partition. My NetwokrManager Applet is missing from the top bar. But if I login instead as a different user, then it is there. When I did the install, I had to create a (new) user as part of the process. The old passwd file had two users, one called admin, and the other myself. I logged in initially as the new user, and created the admin user keeping the same home directory, user ID and group ID. I then logged out, logged in again as admin, and removed the new user. I then added myself as a user keeping the same home directory, and user and group IDs.. For some reason admin has the applet but I don't. I also don't see how to add it except as a custom laucher using nm-applet, and that didn't seem to work.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Sound Applet Disappeared And Cannot Change System Volume?

Feb 11, 2011

Recently I installed JACK and Ardour to try out. Later I decided against it and so I uninstalled them. After restarting my computer, I noticed that the sound applet has disappeared from the panel, although the battery and mail icons are still present. There is still sound coming out of my laptop speakers, but it is stuck at whatever volume I had it set on before the last time I shut down. Volume sliders inside Banshee and suchll function, but I cannot change the overall system volume, and my keyboard shortcuts for this have stopped working as well. When I go into System->Preferences->Sound, all I get is a message that says "Waiting for sound system to respond." and nothing happens. I've tried searching around for a solution, but nobody I could find seems to have had aimilar problem, and none of the various other solutions proposed have worked for me. I'm on Ubuntu 10.10 by the way.

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Disappeared From Applet X220 + Realtek Wifi?

Jul 29, 2011

I am having issues with wifi on my Lenovo X220. What has occurred is that the network applet in the notification bar no longer shows me any wireless network options. When I click on the applet, the drop down shows me: Wired network: disconnected (greyed out), VPN connections, Enable networking (checked), Connection information (greyed out), and Edit connections. Missing is Wireless connections. This occurred "out of the blue" in the middle of using the computer (i.e. NOT just after a reboot or new driver installation, etc.)

I have noted that:

1. Wired ethernet works just fine.

2. Wireless (wifi) works when I boot into Windows 7 or into a fresh Ubuntu USB Start up disk (implying that this is a software issue, not hardware).

3. The hardware led for wifi is OFF (whereas the Bluetooth light is on.) In Windows or using a fresh ubuntu from USB, this light turns on normally.

This may be irrelevant, but the issue started yesterday when I noticed that the trackpoint scrolling that I had enabled using gpointing-device-settings was not working. I ran that app and checked the settings, which were normal. I then reset the computer, and found the trackpoint was working just fine, but I had no wifi. A few resets later, the problem was not solved.

Ubuntu Networking :: Network Manager Applet - Disappeared From Right Hand Upper Corner

Oct 16, 2010

I have assigned ip address to laptop by editing /etc/network.interfaces. From next reboot the Network Manager Applet which was present on right hand upper corner, disappeared. I wonder why? This has happened with 9.04, 9.10 and now in 10.04. Another question is, are Network Manager settings (ip) and /etc/network/interfaces do correspond to same thing or not? As I have narrated above, since network manager applet is no more visible how to see the physical network cable connectivity status (as we do in windows xp)? (is there any other app of such kind or what?)

Ubuntu :: Unity Has Disappeared / Get It Back?

May 31, 2011

When logging in, I suddenly got a message saying "It appears you do not have the hardware to run Unity", and it initialized the old GNOME 2 desktop.

Ofcourse I have the hardware to run Unity (an NVIDIA GTX 580), and it has worked normally until now...

Now Unity won't come back, even after logging out / in or rebooting. The video driver works normally and NVIDIA X Server Settings does not show that there's anything wrong with my video card or drivers.

Is this a bug? Did this happen to anyone else? How do I get the Unity desktop back?

Ubuntu :: Menu Bar And Task Bar Have Disappeared - Get Back?

Jan 29, 2011

I was recently having problems with Me TV, and I had to kill it in a terminal window. When I killed it, it didn't release the DVB-T stick and when I launched Kaffeine, it told me that there was no device available. I re-booted rather than trying to figure out where the lock file was or whatever the problem might have been. Now, when I boot into my desktop, I am missing the menu bar and the task bar. Also, under Applications -> Settings -> XFCE Settings Manager, the Panel icon doesn't launch any settings dialog when clicked. How can I get my menu bar and task bar back?

Ubuntu :: Network-manager Disappeared And Won't Come Back

Feb 5, 2011

For some reason, I can't get network-manager to appear on the task bar so that I can edit the connections. Also, network manager doesn't appear in system/prefs menu. if I try typing at the terminal 'sudo nm-applet" it says "An instance of nm-applet is already running. ** (nm-applet:9074): WARNING **: <WARN> constructor(): Couldn't initialize the D-Bus manager." If I inspect the system | preferences | startup apps , network manager is selected with the command "nm-applet --sm-disable".

I can see "network-manager" shown in /etc/inid.d but "sudo network-manager" gives "command not found". Anyone know what I have to do to get it working ? Uninstalling and re-installing hasn't worked. I have tried installing Wicd and that shows Lan & wireless connections ok but it *doesn't show my usb data-dongle* which I've just got working using the very useful application UsbModem_Switch by Draisberghof .

So the workaround for me is to call that connection manually ( if I need to use the usb data-card dongle ) with the command "sudo usb_modeswitch -W -c /etc/usb_modeswitch.d/0471:1210". However, if I can get the network-manager applet thing to show up and use that it would be easier. Or is there a better alternative to Wicd which can handle usb data-card modem connections ?

Slackware :: All Text Disappeared From Firefox And Thunderbird / Get Them Back?

Oct 23, 2010

Running Slackware64 13.1 here. I started up Firefox this morning and all the text is completely blank - all the menus have disappeared and everything. I can't really think of a great way to explain it clearly so I've attached screen grabs of Firefox and Thunderbird (which has the same problem). Other GTK apps seem to be fine, it's just the Mozillas as far as I can tell.

I have tried removing both with code...

And then I reinstalled both Firefox and Thunderbird from .txz files I downloaded from a repository, but they're still the same. Firefox version is 3.6.3 and Thunderbird is 3.0.4.
