Ubuntu :: 9.10 Stops Working After Update
Mar 18, 2010
I have Ubuntu 9.10 installed on my laptop. The laptop has a single HDD with 2 partitions. Partition 1 has WindowsXP and partition 2 contains other data, among which the directory of the ubuntu installation. The partitions are formatted as NTFS. Ubuntu has been installed with wubi on the second partition. Ubuntu has been working fine for 2 days. Last night I updated the Ubuntu system and it required a restart. Needless to say, after the restart, grub wouldn't load. It just shows the shell.
I read the threads inside this forum and people usually manually select a kernel and boot up ubuntu, but when I do this, after I input all the commands I input "boot" and hit ENTER. The computer starts booting up until a point when it says ALERT! /host/ubuntu/disks/root.disk does not exist and something about using selection #1 and exits to shell (Easy Shell or Easy Boot, I can't remember exactly what it says... Easy something anyway) I've read that this is possibly caused by a NTFS dirty tag... but I do not see how to fix this problem.

I've been using exmh as my mail reader for years. It's written in tcl/tk and uses the tk send facility to communicate with a background process. This communication depends on properly configured Xauthority. After upgrading from 8.04 to 10.04 I get X server insecure (must use xauth-style authorization)I've removed and re-installed tcl8.4 and exmh to make sure it's not a package problem. The XAUTHORITY env variable is set up properly. xauth shows the proper cookie:xauth> listjohn/unix:0 MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 9d2c3ae970c352a0d21159190d9e5530Access control is enabled.I'm at a loss where/how to proceed. I need to get this working, it's not reasonable at this stage to switch to a different mail client.

I'm trying to get internet set up on my grandad's laptop (sony pcg-f590), which has a fairly old pcmcia belkin 54g wireless card. I've installed the relevant bcmwl5a.inf driver through ndiswrapper, and for a time wireless worked so I installed updates through update manager. however after restarting the network manager menu comes up with "wireless networks disconnected" and no list of networks (I know there are because my laptop works and his is sitting next to the router!). The light is on on the network card so I know the laptop is talking to it. Unplugging and replugging the card does nothing, and neither does restarting again.

I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat 64-bit on my desktop with a wired internet connection (with no firewall). For the past 2 days, I have observed that1. Firefox randomly throws up errors like "Problem loading page" whenever I click on a hyperlink. When I click on Reload, the page loads up just fine. This has been happening a lot recently..and I do not remember updating anything consciously. By the way, ipv6 is disabled in Firefox.2. The network stops working all of a sudden (usually indicated by the Firefox error). The Autho Eth0 indication is active, but I am unable to connect to any external machine.
3. Needless to say, this error is manifesting itself in apt-get as well. I get "something wicked happened" errors all the time, and am unable to download or install anything. That this is not a problem with the ISP is obvious because I also have Windows (from which I'm typing this, ironically), which is able to access the internet. Is this a bug in Ubuntu 10.10?

Nothing happend so i ctrl-c it and the packet manger shows me no other errors or something else, even all the packages who was marked for upgrade are now upgraded but what about that python message? Do i have to do some check ? or maybe even a repair or even worse re install the OS?

I have read no fixes anywhere, oddly. This problem happened in 9.10 and seems to be back in 10.04. The fix on Ubuntu-Geek, which was re-posted various places, does not work either. However, I do know this is not a hardware issue... or think. I have a dual-boot with Windows 7 and it is not affected by this. Also, if I install anything 9.04 or earlier, this does not happen. Oddly, my netbook had 9.10 and now 10.04 but not this issue. Sadly I feel I must try other distros as this appears to be a Ubuntu specific error.

This is the first time I've got a major problem with Ubuntu (I started with version 5), and this one is particularly frustrating.I'm running Ubuntu 11.04 on my old (2007) desktop PC.Occasionally, but more and more often now, the keyboard just stops working. The mouse is still fine. When I shut down, I would sometime notice that the "stop crash report generation" process fails. Then the shutdown sequence stops at some point, and I am forced to do a hard shutdown, power down for a while, and reboot. If I don't wait after power off, the keyboard freeze would occur again at any time during the start up sequence. I even had a keyboard freeze after manually switching to the Windows boot.

All drop downs work, but whatever i click on doesn't do a thing so i can open the drop down to shut down but when i click on it it just sits there or if i try to open firefox or chrome it just sits there. if im browsing the web or playing a game for a couple hours everything works but it i leave it to do something else and it takes close to a hour, and i dont shut it down. It just stops working. then i have to kill the power to stop it.

It has to be an update or something that cause this. I've done nothing differently from the other days I use this laptop. I have to keep relogging every now and then because the sound stopped working. I can turn the volume up but pidginrhythmbox, nothing makes noise anymore. it's random...it just started happening today and this is the second time the music went out. anyone have any idea of how to stop this from happening in the future?

I have an Hp Tx2 tablet with Lucid on and recently my touchpadsiezed to work while resizing a large partition on an external usb hard disk (which I believe has nothing to do with it). The resizing took me a day or 2. Since then, every time I log in, my touchpad freezes. It works fine at the login screen. As far as I recall, I did not do any substantial updates or apt-get installs recentlyWhen I cat /dev/input/mice it does give output, so I assume that it still works, there's just something in between, blocking my touchpad when logging in.
The driver is psmouse I figure (although I would think it's an usb touchpad), and if I remove the module and reload it, that does not make a difference.I already tried blacklisting, and loading after logging in.Anyone any input on how to debug/solve that? One thing I can add is when plugging in a usb mouse, that one does work. But that doesn't change anything on behalve of my touchpad. So it seems they use a different driver

I'm having some problems with wireless, it works fine on boot but after a while pretty much randomly, it can be a few days or it can be a few hours, it stops working. I'm not sure which command would tell you what and it would take a little while to debug it because like I said it's random, but if anyone knows what to do please tell me! I'm on Lucid Lynx 10.04.Another something that's really bothering me (But not related to wireless) is that for some reason when I restart my computer, the top panel keeps changing the applets locations.

I have created a Samba share, using the fantastic Webmin tool. I have a network media player which can connect to my router, and then access windows (samba) shares. Most of the time, it works fine - it's able to stream HDTV wirelessly across the network. However, every so often, it just stops working ... the media player sees :
Network, then
WORKGROUP, then
FILESERVER-1 (machine name), then
Media (share name), then
Video (subdir, then
TV_Shows (subdir), then
MyShow.AVI ... just hangs
if I use the Webmin tool, I see multiple samba connections all from the media player. Restarting samba seems to have no effect. The only way to fix it, is to reboot.
logfile I can check, or a setting I can tweak to fix this issue ?
When it get like this, trying to access the share from a windows machine, just gives me an error saying it can't find the machine. But when it's rebooted, it works fine.
I have mapped the "nobody" linux user to "guest" which is what the media player is defaulted to login with (it's primarily sold as a "Windows" media player), and using Webmin I have assigned the "nobody" user read-only rights to the samba share. It worked fine for 6 months, until I added this new drive.

Just a short while ago my mouse pointer froze randomly. I figured it was just the mouse so I disconnected and reconnected it, still nothing. Restarted computer and it worked for a while, then froze again. The mouse is wireless, but it doesn't seem to be anything to do with the mouse's hardware. The laser on the mouse and LED indicator on the sensor are both still flashing away while it's stuck. I then restarted again and tried an old wired laser mouse, which followed suit and worked for a few minutes, then froze mid-screen. This time I left it in, and it's been stuck for a good ~15 minutes so far. Using Ubuntu 10.04 x64. Mice are just generic wireless and wired lasers of Microsoft and Logitech, respectively.

I'm having some trouble with Evolution. I have set up two IMAP accounts and ne POP account. Whenever I leave Evolution running for a while, work with something else and then get back to check my email it won't show new emails for the IMAP accounts. In the "progress bar" at the bottom it shows:Ping server XXX (0% complete) Checking new emails (0% complete) nd this seems to go on and on, I've waited for abt.0 minutes for it to finish pinging and checking for new emails but it doesn't stop. The P account works fine. If I however close Evolution and then start it again it immediately check and show new email in the IMAP accounts. Is there any solution to this

I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 since several months and I randomly have problems with the keyboard (PS2). Maybe 2-4 times per week the keyboard stops working all in a sudden. The symptoms related to this can be- the keyboard simply does not react any more to key press- during typing the keyboard gets crazy and fills the lines with the last typed character- opened windows move to the left when touching them at the top bar, keyboard does not react any more. When clicking on a panel menu the focus line is running permanently quickly through all items, and it's practically impossible to click on any of those (so even shutdown is difficult to achieve, and I might need to use a hard reset).
In nearly all cases the problem only disappears after reboot, just very rarely a logout is sufficient to get the keyboard working again. I googled for similar problems and found quite some people having problems with keyboard (and/or mouse) not working correctly under Ubuntu, but I have not stumbled over a similar error description as I have.Just some config parameters on my box: amd64, XOrg uses an Nvidia driver, 3D and Compiz are activated

Sometimes Ubuntu 10.04 will get into a state where the system stops booting when it apparently attempts to initialize the USB keyboard (keyboard goes dead and never lights up again)(Saitek Eclipse II keyboard).
It either works, or doesn't work consistently regardless of reboot. I don't know what makes it stop working. (Or start working) Recovery mode doesn't work either. Or the saved -21 kernal.
I have an ASUS M4A88TD-V EVO/USB3 and have the -30 generic kernal.
I can dual-boot into WinXP just fine.

I use my debian machine for masquerading, packet filtering anilar for a tiny network. It runs the latest debian testing.Every now and then (i am talking about weeks) the connection to my internet stops working.ifdown eth0; ifup eth0 brings it back. The other interface (eth1) is never effected. The odd thing is, there are no warnings, no messages .. nothing.I cant find any entry. Nothing in the logs, nothing in dmsg and no kernel panic. The only way to find out when it might have been happened is to search in several daemons log files,to find out when their first error connecting to the internet occurred.I ran memtest without any results. The nic is e1000 compatible.

I am experiencing sound problems after an upgrade to kernel 2.6.29.6-213.fc11.i686.PAE from kernel 2.6.29.5-191.fc11.i686.PAE in several games like Neverwinter Nights (linux binaries) and Warcraft III (PlayOnLinux). The sound stops and changes into a very choppy annoying sound. When I boot into the old kernel the problems are gone.

There was an xorg update that I did today (June 8) and when try to boot into runlevel 3, it stops when it gets to starting up sntp. I also saw that it said DHCP client not running. When I try again (push the power button) and allow it to do what it wants, everything seems to start up just fine. I'm asking about this because I need to re-install my NVIDIA graphics card driver. For the boot options, I've tried clearing the text (I don't remember what they are at the moment) and typing:
Code:
nomodeset 3
and when that failed, I've tried it as
Code:
nomodeset3
but still get stuck at the same spot. I've also tried it without clearing the text but still it gets stuck.
How can I get to runlevel 3 in order to re-install my graphics card driver? I cannot run my 3D software without it. Can I switch to runlevel 3 from the usual (normal GUI) screen? I can't remember the command. I'm running SuSE 11.4.

Before I upgraded, I used Ubuntu 9.04 on my Playstation 3. It worked absolutely fine. A couple of days back, I decided to upgrade to ubuntu 9.10 using the update manager. The installation process seemed to go fine, until I booted up the new version. When I booted up, my mouse cursor wouldn't move, whilst my keyboard worked fine, I unplugged and plugged it back in and swapped USB ports, but it came to no use. I reinstalled Jaunty and tried the entire installation process again. After installing the new version again, the same problem occured, my mouse just wouldn't work.
When I type in the command 'uname -a' it comes up with something (I apologize, I am a Linux noob) to do with the 2.6.24 Linux kernel, Ubuntu 9.10 is on the 2.6.31 kernel. Is this the problem? I don't understand what is going on or what the solution is. My mouse is a HP optical mouse if that helps. I can't bring up the terminal window because my mouse just doesn't work, which is really annoying me.

I am running Ubuntu 9.10 on an HP dc5100MT workstation. Sound works nearly all the time, but once in a while, the sound stops and I have no idea why. The channel is not muted, the volume is 100%, and not even rebooting fixes it. It will just start working on its own.Under the Sound Preferences panel, the output volume is 100%. The channel is not muted. I can get sound out of the internal speaker by changing the connector to "Analog Output (LFE) / No Amplifier", but not out of the "Analog Output / Amplifier" which is the green sound cable plugged into the sound card.I only use this machine as a video player using VLCNothing else.I would like to know some tricks to isolate and troubleshoot this when it happens.

This should be easy for the Ubuntu Gods to sort out:
I have a Sabrent USB 802.11N adapter. (I am using 64-bit Ubuntu in all below)
I plug it into a 9.04 box and it works fine. Plug it into a 9.10 box. Network manager sees it and can attach to the network, but has 0% signal strength, no internet.
Rebuild the 9.04 box with a fresh install to 9.10. 0% signal, no internet. Try 10.04 Alpha 2, 0% signal strength, no internet.
Rebuild same box down to 9.04. Works perfectly. 100% signal strength. I do all updates and then the upgrade to 9.10 using the USB. Everything works fine until the reboot. Then, USB connects, but 0% signal strength, no internet. Oh! ifconfig says the wlan0 interface is up, but it has a random ip address.
I don't mind using 9.04 because for the forseeable future, the box is just going to count aliens for Seti, but my wife wants it off the counter and I would like to upgrade someday.

I have an old dell server that I decided to try to install ubuntu server on. My problem is that my keyboard stops working after making my initial selection of installer language and install option. As soon as I select install, I receive a message stating that IRQ 14 has been disabled. Next, I am faced with a screen asking me to select my installation language using the tab, space, and enter keys. But to no avail, my keyboard no longer works. No arrows, no tab, no space, no enter, he num lock key will not toggle it's respective LED.
I should note that I'm using a PS/2 mouse (there are no USB ports on this server). I've also tried multiple PS/2 keyboards, and all act the same. I've looked in my BIOS settings, and the only option I see is for enabling/disabling the on-board PS/2 keyboard. I have not tried disabling that, because I have a funny feeling I would lock myself out of the server for good. I also tried non-graphical mode (at least I think that's what I did). I held in the shift key while booting the CD, and selected no to using graphics. At the "boot:" prompt, I just hit enter.
