Ubuntu :: 9.10 Wifi - Can't Connect To My Router ?

Feb 16, 2010

I have been experiencing slight problems while attempting to connect to the internet via a wireless router. I can connect to my router perfectly fine on Vista and I could connect to my friends router while I was in Ubuntu, but I can't connect to my router while on Ubuntu. I've been entering the same code that will work when I'm in Vista, but it wont work while in Ubuntu.

Ubuntu Networking :: Cannot Connect To WiFi Router

Mar 15, 2011

I think I have unique problem. I have a d-link DWL G510 rev c.(Austrailian) WiFi card in my pc which is detected as

Quote:

Network controller [0280]: RaLink RT2561/RT61 rev B 802.11g [1814:0302] in lspci -nn.

iwconfig shows:

Quote:

lo no wireless extensions.
eth0 no wireless extensions.
wlan0 IEEE 802.11bg ESSIDff/any
Mode:Managed Access Point: Not-Associated Tx-Power=6 dBm
Retry long limit:7 RTS thrff Fragment thrff
Power Managementff
ppp0 no wireless extensions.

Now sometimes it detects my wifi router and shows its ssid in nm-applet. but when I try to connect, it tries for 3 or 4 minutes and then fails. for most of time it even does not finds my router.

Networking :: Set Up A Laptop As A Router To Connect Wirelessly To ADSL Router?

Nov 6, 2009

I have a desktop PC running Ubuntu 9.10 and Windows 7, and a Eee PC 701 laptop running EasyPeasy Ubuntu 9.04. I'd like to connect the desktop to the laptop with a wired connection (eth0), then the laptop to my ADSL router using wireless (ath0).

I have a crossover ethernet cable (I bought on ebay). I have set up my laptop with a static IP address on my LAN and it uses OpenDNS.

I have added this to /etc/sysctl.conf on the laptop:

net.ipv4.ip_forward=1

Then I tried this on the laptop:

sudo iptables --table nat --append POSTROUTING --out-interface ath0 -j MASQUERADE
sudo iptables --append FORWARD --in-interface eth0 -j ACCEPT

This is a variation on what I found on other sites describing how to set up a router. I don't understand iptables very well, but I gather that the above two lines should set up forwarding so that traffic from my router to the laptop will be forwarded to the desktop, and vice versa.

But this doesn't work. The connection doesn't even establish between the laptop and the desktop.

Ubuntu Networking :: Use One Wireless Router To Connect/detect To Another Wireless Router?

Aug 1, 2010

My son lost his USB Wireless stick for his Computer. I had thought I heard that if you had a second wireless router, you could use it somehow to detect the wireless router you have already set up in your home (like using a wireless card)? Is this what Ad-Hoc is? Either way, can this be done and if so how? I use a WRT54Gx2 Lynksys router and have a TRENDNET TEW-432BRP wireless router and also a spare D-link DI-514. I use ubuntu 10.04, and also wanted to know if I connected one of the router to his on the LAn port could he connect msaybe through an Ad-Hoc on my local computer here? He uses XP on his. I'm a newbie to linux and networking in general.

Ubuntu Servers :: Router With Wifi And A Firewall

My isp gave me a router which has wifi.

I added an ubuntu box acting as a router, so the layout is this:

Now, the lan has 192.168.2.0 subnet, and the external interface of the router is in the 192.168.1.0 subnet

So the problem is that the wifi assigns 192.168.1.0 ip's which doesnt belong or get filtered through my router/firewall...

Ubuntu Networking :: Logging Into WiFi Router

Jun 17, 2011

I have a Dell Studio XPS15 laptop running 11.04 which works flawlessly with my router (it's a broadcom card btw). Now I'm setting up a new laptop for my Father-in-law which is a Dell Inspiron 15 which has intel Centrino 1000 wireless. I've installed and setup 11.04 on it. Everything runs great except..

Now it can see all the access points around so I assume the wireless card is properly detected and working. But when I try to log into my router and give it my password, it just keeps trying to connect and can't. I've double checked the settings with my own laptop and everything seems the same. why it won't log in? I'm leaving it as a dual boot with Win7 and I know that Win7 will log into the same router with the same password.

Ubuntu Networking :: WiFi Router Connects But No Internet?

Nov 11, 2010

trying to run 10.04 netbook live from a memory stick with a view to installing it on my laptop. However although I can see my wireless router and connect to it I cannot access the internet. I have tried this on my laptop and desktop with the same result. I was however able to download Seamonkey browser using the software manager....this also cannot access the internet. Both of my PC's have no problem when using XP or Linux Mint.

I have also discovered that if I piggyback, using Ubuntu 10.04, on a neighbours open wifi link I can gain access to the internet. My wifi is using WEP protection but as I said I can set the link up to the router, entering the appropriate key code, and have a good signal strength, I just cannot access a google search page.

Hardware :: Using An External HD With A Wifi Router With USB?

Jan 26, 2010

I am using Ubuntu 9.10 and have been seeking a method where I can backup photos and Open Office documents. Data is currently on both Karmic and an XP laptop sharing certain info. What I had thought was to have an old system act as a server for the purpose. I have been looking at various forums and see reference made to using SSH and another to using a wireless router that has a USB connection and an external HD. I think that my old system would be noisy and as space is a problem I see difficulty in keeping the noise down particularly as none of the cupboards have power points. I think that having to keep switching on and off would defeat the purpose of it acting as a server.

The option of using the wireless router looks good from the point of view that as the router is always on then the external HD would be also. What concerns me is how this would operate. Will I require to load Karmic on to the HD also how do I access the drive to let me work with it. I would appreciate guidance on using an external HD as I am under pressure to ensure that all data is fully backed up as XP has let us down in the past.

Ubuntu Networking :: Jaunty Wifi Very Slow - 327W Router

Jun 14, 2010

I was introduced to Ubuntu about a year ago and recently decided to come back to using the OS. I now dual boot it with Windows XP Home. My former setup was with Wubi but now I have it installed on an actual partition. (The Wubi install, for whatever reason, had little internet problems.) I use wireless internet, and though my network card was recognized out of the box and can connect to my network, the Internet is very slow. It takes almost a minute to look up Google. Also, Firefox will often report that it cannot find the server for whatever website I try to look up, after trying to connect to it/look it up. I also cannot access the web configuration page for my router. (192.168.1.1). The network app reports that I often have a signal strength of 40% or lower. The following is my hardware/internet:

Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty
TrendNet TEW-424UB adapter (54mbps)
Westell VersaLink 327W router
ISP: CenturyTel/CenturyLink High speed internet (512kbps)

I am the only Linux computer on my network. (There is no encryption on my network. I know there should be. but my parents are not very computer literate and they are the ones who have access to the network. It is easier just to go without.)

I have tried disabling ipv6, setting custom DNS server names under ipv4, and setting the wlan rate (or something similar) to 1492. Nothing works. This does not seem to be a network problem because my internet works fine in Windows, and I can access the configuration page for my router to change channels, PPP, etc..

Ubuntu Networking :: Wifi Status Only Works As Root With New Router?

Jul 27, 2010

I recently bought a new wireless router (Cisco E1000) to use in my house. The E1000 supports mixed-mode 802.11n/g/b, which is what I have enabled. It is the first 802.11n router I've had. My netbook (an HP/Compaq Mini 110) only supports b/g. When connected to this new router, I can only see my status as root. NetworkManager shows a little red exclamation point, and 'iwconfig' shows nothing. It's missing in the 'iwlist scanning' list. Even still, I'm connected and can do everything just fine. However, everything shows up fine when I run 'sudo iwconfig' or 'sudo iwlist scanning'. These have always worked as a standard user before.
