I'm running Ubuntu Server 9.10 and every time that I su in as root and run a command, I get a little message after saying:
"You have mail in /var/mail/root"
And in fact, I do have mail in there, it's mail that I would like to keep for future reference. How can I suppress the message though?
I am trying to do something really simple with Exim. I have two machine connected together via a hub. They can ping each other. They each are running openSuse 11.2 and have Exim installed. On each machine from the command line in start Exim as a daemon by typing: sudo /usr/sbin/exim -bd -d and each machine runs through some output and sits there "Listening". Then on either machine I try to send a mail message of the form mail
(or mailx) <user>@<other node>
some text
EOT
and absolutly nothing happens! I must be doing something wrong or daft which is very basic, but I have searched all over and cannot get it to work.

View 4 Replies View RelatedTrying to write a small php program to send emails using a form. I have collected all the information in php variables and I can send the mails just fine. But I need some neat and clean formatting for the mail that is received and hence thought html tables would be nice. But all the html tags are received as plain text and not html though I have mentioned in headers content-type to be html. Any links? If anyone can put some light on it? I thought that html tags would just work fine without much issue. I have tried same with asp and it worked.
PS: I am no programmer. Just trying my hands out on some php.
Edit: I am using a php mailer class from php classes to send mails. I need some way to use an external smtp server for sending mails. I have seen pear but I do not want to use pear. It is not available on the server I am testing and it is not possible for me to install it. I do not have access to install pear and can not ask to install it.

I have been using comm to compare two simple column lists, and suppress items that were contained in the second list (suppression list). This was extremely simple and basic, however now list1 has two columns, and I must compare the second column in list1 with my suppression list.
Basically I need to compare my user list and suppression list to suppress any users that exist in the suppression list, then remove the second column (md5).I wasn't sure the fastest way to make comparisons if there was a similar command like comm, or if I needed to create an array of users and see if any of them matched the suppression list one by one. This seemed like it would be pretty process intensive. Anyone have any less cumbersome ideas?

I am unable to update apt-get and I am unable to install any software. The following message when I use the sudo apt-get update command:

When I for example try to install the gcc I also get weird feedback:
gcc is already the newest version.

I thought it was that they where already installed on the comp, however, the computer keeps telling me that gcc is not installed. I am not quite sure what to do. I am using the latest version of ubuntu (10.10).
Is there a way to create a windowed message from the command line? Like an alert?

It sits there and does nothing. I waited ten minutes...still nothing. Killed the firewall, same gig. Obviously this is user error but what I'm doing wrong is unknown to me.
