Ubuntu :: 9.10 Internet - Lspci Lists The Realtek 8139/810 C And A Few Others But Not The "X"
Jan 31, 2010
I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 on a desktop as a dual boot along with Win XP Pro X64 bit. I have a Realtek RTL 8139/810x Ethernet. When I use the lspci in the terminal, it lists the realtek 8139/810 c, and a few others but not the "X". Could this be the reason?

I have no internet connection. I am running dual boot windows XP and ubuntu. The card works fine in windows, but doesn't work at all in Ubuntu. This is the card I am using Realtek rtl8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet Nic. I am using Ubuntu 8.10, codename intrepid. I hate windows because of the viruses I contract everyday, so I decided to use Ubuntu, but this does no good without networking. so I can get online. What I do now? It is an onboard LAN card, cable is plugged in a green light is on, ubuntu just doesn't recognize it.

Im not able to establish a Wireless Internet connection in Ubuntu 10.04.
Ive tried these steps:
1. Wireless Internet did not show via the Network-icon. Only the 2 LAN-gates where shown
2. I installed the Windows Driver (net8185.inf) via ndisgtk package
3. After restarting the computer, 2 LAN-gates and 1 WLAN where listed via the Network-icon
4. Normally WLAN should automatically start scanning for available networks, but that didnt happen
5. When I tried to connect to my own network, the computer tries to connect for 1 minute and than stops because no connection could be established
6. A wired Internet-connection does not give any problems
Details:
- I first had Ubuntu 9.10 but I wasnt able to make a WLAN connection either. I followed the same steps. After that I upgraded to 10.04
- iwconfig in Terminal gives an IP-address which consists of 12 identical characters.
- lspci in Terminal shows these data:
01:00.0 Ethernet controller: Broadcom Corporation NetLink BCM5787M Gigabit Ethernet PCI Express (rev 02)
[Code]....
My questions:
- How to create an Internet connection via my WLAN-card?
- How to install the option to search for available networks automatically?

I have installed 9.04 ( I currently have it on dual boot with Windows XP) and my problem is that I have no internet connection. I have a Motorola modem with a Realtek RTL8139 Family Fast Ethernet NIC network card ( it's a wired connection, btw) When I plug in the cable, there's a little animation, but after a while I get the message: Wired connection is not active (or something like that) Here's what I did so far:
1) I ticked the Wake-On-Lan option in XP, since I read it in the forums that I could solve my problem. It did not
2) I turned off my modem, rebooted my system.
3) I deleted the Auto Ethernet network, and plugged in the cable again...no use.
4) I did an ifconfig, since I know that is what you guys really want
evajulia@Derek:~$ ifconfig
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:18:f3:ab:2b:3a

Im new to linux (2 days only) so i have some driver problems. My internet connection is unstable. It reconnects every few minutes (5 min approximately). Im connected with wired dsl connection to routher. My network adapter is "Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8111/8168B PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet controller". I use Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat release, kernel 2.6.35-27-generic.

I'm using Kubuntu 10.04.2 LTS on a Bangho laptop. Kernel 2.6.32-28-generic i686. My card is: Realtek Semiconductor Corp. RTL8187B Wireless 802.11g 54Mbps Network Adapter iwconfig wlan0 gives me:
Code:
wlan0 IEEE 802.11bg ESSID:"Default_WLAN"
Mode:Managed Frequency:2.442 GHz Access Point: 00:06:4F:8D:B9:AF
Bit Rate=1 Mb/s Tx-Power=20 dBm
Retry long limit:7 RTS thr: off Fragment thr: off
[Code]...
Usually when this happens, for 10 or 20 seconds it appears to be connected (i.e. the heart symbol is there) but I can't ping google or my router, then it "realizes" it's disconnected. It takes one or two attempts to reconnect successfully by pressing the "active" button. Meanwhile throughout the disconnections and re-connections the signal is very strong (98%).
I had the same problem with my old access point, at first I thought it was the cheap/old hardware, so now I bought an "ENCORE ENDSL-A2+WIGX2 | ADSL 2+ Modem with 4 Port Wireless Router". The problem persists only with a stronger signal.

Got a laptop with a RTL8187B wlan card, installed opensuse 11.2 on a 50gb partition. Card was detected straight away but only connects when I enter ip addresses manually, DHCP don't work.
When it is connected it always stays at a speed of 1mb/s and it cannot ping my router or anything else.
Me kernel is 2.6.31.8-0.1-desktop
Searched around the forums but no love, tried compat-wireless but it started crying about dependencies. Modprobed it too..

I'm going to start using Debian as my desktop system rather than Ubuntu since I'm not really liking all the crazy eye candy and just wanted a fast and simple system. My main problem is networking, I guess I'll start off with my system specs and other information for problem solving.
My specs are:
- Intel Core i7 2600K CPU
- Gigabyte Z68X-UD3P-B3 Motherboard
- 8GB DDR3 1600Mhz RAM
I have a Realtek RTL8111/8168B Ethernet Adapter builtin to my motherboad which I am using, I could only get a basic connection, by basic I mean that it allowed me to connect to my local area network but not the internet. I then modified /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf to change to managed=true this allowed me to use the internet, but the problem is, that it is a very unstable connection, the speed is very slow and it drops a lot! I have to carry on running /etc/init.d/network-manager restart twice to get my connection back, which lasts for about a minute.

Ubuntu 10.04 fresh install 64bit. Wireless was working in 9.10, now does not even show up in restricted drivers. Installed bcwl-kernel-source, and b43-fwcutter. ifconfig, iwconfig only show eth0 and lo - no wlan
Other restricted drivers show up - using NVIDIA driver with Compiz running better than ever on 2 screens
Here is the output from the collectNWData script found at [url]
I do notice that in the firmware section that both b43 and b43legacy are listed. Somewhere I reads that I should be using b43 - not the legacy version. Should it be blacklisted?

I am running ubuntu 10.04 with the fglrx driver installed with apt-get. I have an ATI Radeon HD AGP with 512MB of video ram. My bios window size is 64MB. The Xorg.0.log file shows that 512MB is recognized. I also tried checking the /proc/mtrr file and it shows two values one I believe is my ram size which looks to be correct at 1.5GB the other is 512MB which I think is my video ram size, but when I do an lspci -v the video ram size shows 256MB. I am trying to run Doom 3 and it only allows me to use 256MB of memory.

I installed a secondary Nvidia GeForce7300GS 256 PCIe video card in an ASROCK ION 330 motherboard. The idea is to provide an S-video output. The interesting bit is that lspci shows only one of the two cards. If I set the ION video adaptor primary in BIOS, then lspci will detect only ION, if I set the PCIe video card then lspci will detect the GeForce 7300GS. I'd like to write my own xorg.conf, but how can I refer to drivers without the pci bus address?

I have had on and off problems with my sound for quite some time now. Each time it would stop working, I would find a fix which would work for a month or so, then I would go back to having no sound. I have had consistent sound on my Windows partition, so I don't think something is wrong with the hardware. The first fix I used was using "sudo alsa force-reload" to get ALSA working again. The latest fix I used was to add the line "options snd-hda-intel model=toshiba" to alsa-base.conf, which worked up until now. My built-in computer speakers won't make any sound, nor will my external monitors when they are plugged into the headphone jack. I do get sound when I plug in a pair of USB headphones.
I have tried using the Comprehensive Sound Problem Solution Guide [url], but I run into a predicament...
aplay -l (with or without being root) gives...
Code:
Code:
Alsamixer isn't much help either. It shows the name of my card in the top left, but there are no sliders to adjust.
I've tried compiling the modules from source, reinstalling through Synaptic, and plenty of other things, to no avail. Ubuntu 10.04 on a Toshiba Satellite U305-S5107

I want to take the output from lspci | grep VGA and grab the BusID's of each video card installed on a server. I then want to take these BusID's and convert them to decimal (Which I can do fine). I then want to take these numbers and have them as the input of a few perl search and replace commands for xorg.conf. I'm mostly stuck on trying to get each BusID that is outputted from lspci and using them as inputs (or variables).

I have been administering linux systems for years now, but usually they are commodity boxes and as a result I rarely have driver problems, short of needing to install some "restricted" or "proprietary" driver package, or manually installing the nvidia binary drivers back in the day. However, one question to which I have never picked up a straight answer regards common troubleshooting practice. Will lsusb and lspci list device for which a system has no drivers (kernel modules)? I am trying to install a webcam on a SiS-chipset laptop and though I can see a physical webcam, neither lsusb or lspci are showing me that any webcam-like device exists. What I want to know is if it would show anything, or if it needs drivers in order to show a device?
