OpenSUSE Wireless :: Create A Virtual WiFi And Share Internet Access With Many Others?

Dec 25, 2009

There is a new feature in Windows 7 that make u able to create a virtual WiFi and share ur internet access with many others.

I know there is ad-hoc but sometimes it has problems, for example I couldn't connect to my friend's ad-hoc network (he is using Windows 7) but I _could_ connect to the virtual WiFi he created, it appeared just like any other wireless network unlike ad-hoc

so is there any way to create a virtual WiFi and not ad-hoc in Linux?

OpenSUSE Wireless :: Realtek RTL8187B Connects To Network But No Internet?

Jan 7, 2010

Got a laptop with a RTL8187B wlan card, installed opensuse 11.2 on a 50gb partition. Card was detected straight away but only connects when I enter ip addresses manually, DHCP don't work.

When it is connected it always stays at a speed of 1mb/s and it cannot ping my router or anything else.

Me kernel is 2.6.31.8-0.1-desktop

Searched around the forums but no love, tried compat-wireless but it started crying about dependencies. Modprobed it too..

OpenSUSE :: 11.1 - Installing WiFi Internet Access (YAST Disappeared)?

Sep 26, 2010

I use openSUSE 11.1 since quite a bit and I frequently use YAST (not as root of course). However, since the problems I have to deal with while trying to install WiFi internet access I meet the following problem. I call YAST, get the small authentication screen, I give the right password, which seems to be recognized as such, but I never see YAST appearing. So I can't manage neither my hardware, nor my software.

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Disappeared From Applet X220 + Realtek Wifi?

Jul 29, 2011

I am having issues with wifi on my Lenovo X220. What has occurred is that the network applet in the notification bar no longer shows me any wireless network options. When I click on the applet, the drop down shows me: Wired network: disconnected (greyed out), VPN connections, Enable networking (checked), Connection information (greyed out), and Edit connections. Missing is Wireless connections. This occurred "out of the blue" in the middle of using the computer (i.e. NOT just after a reboot or new driver installation, etc.)

I have noted that:

1. Wired ethernet works just fine.

2. Wireless (wifi) works when I boot into Windows 7 or into a fresh Ubuntu USB Start up disk (implying that this is a software issue, not hardware).

3. The hardware led for wifi is OFF (whereas the Bluetooth light is on.) In Windows or using a fresh ubuntu from USB, this light turns on normally.

This may be irrelevant, but the issue started yesterday when I noticed that the trackpoint scrolling that I had enabled using gpointing-device-settings was not working. I ran that app and checked the settings, which were normal. I then reset the computer, and found the trackpoint was working just fine, but I had no wifi. A few resets later, the problem was not solved.

OpenSUSE Wireless :: WiFi Internet Works On LiveCD But Not After Install

Nov 15, 2010

I am super new to linux. I have tried a lot of distros but went with OpenSUSE11.3. I have both gnome and kde live cd. Now to the problem, When I put in the live cd and boot - the computer finds the wireless card and lets me connect to the internet. This works on both versions. But after clicking on the install icon the wireless no longer starts and then I cant get it to work. Maybe its something I should be doing. After all I am new to this.

Ubuntu Networking :: No Wireless Internet With Realtek RTL-8185 In 10.04?

May 12, 2010

Im not able to establish a Wireless Internet connection in Ubuntu 10.04.

Ive tried these steps:

1. Wireless Internet did not show via the Network-icon. Only the 2 LAN-gates where shown

2. I installed the Windows Driver (net8185.inf) via ndisgtk package

3. After restarting the computer, 2 LAN-gates and 1 WLAN where listed via the Network-icon

4. Normally WLAN should automatically start scanning for available networks, but that didnt happen

5. When I tried to connect to my own network, the computer tries to connect for 1 minute and than stops because no connection could be established

6. A wired Internet-connection does not give any problems

Details:
- I first had Ubuntu 9.10 but I wasnt able to make a WLAN connection either. I followed the same steps. After that I upgraded to 10.04
- iwconfig in Terminal gives an IP-address which consists of 12 identical characters.
- lspci in Terminal shows these data:
01:00.0 Ethernet controller: Broadcom Corporation NetLink BCM5787M Gigabit Ethernet PCI Express (rev 02)

[Code]....

My questions:

- How to create an Internet connection via my WLAN-card?

- How to install the option to search for available networks automatically?

OpenSUSE Network :: Wireless AP Configuration - Doesn't Have Internet Access

Aug 7, 2011

I'm trying to setup a wireless AP with my old asus eeepc, so it can act as a repeater to connect my android device on the other end of the apartment. I've already created the Wireless Access Point using hostapd. It took very little configuring, just changed from mode 'a' to 'g' and changed the channel from 60 to 1 and It was all set. Next I setup a dhcp server. Also simple enough using yast.

Up to this point, I was able to connect my android device to the newly created wireless network. However It doesn't have internet access. I guess I have to configure iptables for this, but I find it incredibly confusing! Here are a few specs to help with any examples: The laptop is connected to the internet through eth0 with IP 192.168.2.120 Hostapd is using wlan0, and I'm pretty sure it created mon.wlan0 So, to sum up, when I connect my android device to the network I can, for instance, see what ever pages apache is currently serving on the laptop, but can't access the internet.

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Internet Drops Frequently With Realtek Card On Kubuntu 10.04?

Feb 11, 2011

I'm using Kubuntu 10.04.2 LTS on a Bangho laptop. Kernel 2.6.32-28-generic i686. My card is: Realtek Semiconductor Corp. RTL8187B Wireless 802.11g 54Mbps Network Adapter iwconfig wlan0 gives me:

Code:
wlan0 IEEE 802.11bg ESSID:"Default_WLAN"
Mode:Managed Frequency:2.442 GHz Access Point: 00:06:4F:8D:B9:AF
Bit Rate=1 Mb/s Tx-Power=20 dBm
Retry long limit:7 RTS thr: off Fragment thr: off

[Code]...

Usually when this happens, for 10 or 20 seconds it appears to be connected (i.e. the heart symbol is there) but I can't ping google or my router, then it "realizes" it's disconnected. It takes one or two attempts to reconnect successfully by pressing the "active" button. Meanwhile throughout the disconnections and re-connections the signal is very strong (98%).

I had the same problem with my old access point, at first I thought it was the cheap/old hardware, so now I bought an "ENCORE ENDSL-A2+WIGX2 | ADSL 2+ Modem with 4 Port Wireless Router". The problem persists only with a stronger signal.

Debian :: Wifi Access Point (and Internet Some Day)?

Jul 7, 2010

First time poster, some time Linux user. I've been reading and trying to create a wifi access point on my debian server. that is {intenet-router} <-> {server + usb-wifi} <-> {network users}

I've opted for this configuration as the server will become a firewall, traffic monitoring (sick of my windows machine getting hacked). I've spent a lot of time and I don't seem to have any un-clicked links in google left. I've read quite a few howtos and threads on this site and others ... I'm definitely missing something. Running: Debian Lenny (no gui)

[Code]...

I've also installed hostapd, and attempted a few things in there. Long run I want to allow wifi users to access the net. But will probably need iptables etc but just want to pass this step. I've see a few howtos seem to use ath0. It's probably only a minor issues.

Ubuntu Networking :: Connected To Wifi But Cannot Access Internet

Sep 5, 2010

I've been using my upstairs computer with no problems recently up until this evening, when I rebooted it did an automatic scan of my disks, so I left it to it's thing and when I came back ubuntu had successfully booted, and had seemingly successfully connected to my wireless network as usual.

I've been through the wireless troubleshooting guide, paying special attention to sections 4 and 6 but to no avail, while I'm apparently connected, and have been assigned an IP by my router I'm unable to access anything outside my computer, including the router itself. This happened before, however I solved it by reinstalling ubuntu, and I'd rather not do that again!

Ubuntu Networking :: Cannot Get WiFi Working - No Internet Access

Jul 11, 2011

Working with a Dell Inspiron 6000 and installed Ubuntu 10.10 just to get familiar with some form of Linux. The wireless card is Dell's 1470 and the chip on the card is labelled BCM4311 so that's what I went for. At first it showed an unconnected wired NIC and for wireless it said "no firmware", but now it doesn't say anything about either one of them, it says "no network devices available". I followed the instructions here [URL] for both "STA - No Internet Access" and "b43 - No Internet Access" and when it says to go to the additional drivers menu to enable the new driver, there's nothing on the list. I then tried [URL] that guide and [URL] that one. Don't say things like "just run a qf13 on the PCL so the ergotron bus will be cleared, it's probably a thermawhatsit in conflict with the meatloaf kernel" as I won't have a clue how to execute said instruction. More useful would be "open a terminal and type 'ireallyenjoynewcarpetting' then check if the output says 'blargh 010101' ".

Ubuntu Networking :: Bizarre Wifi - All Boxes Can't Access The Internet?

Jul 12, 2010

Problem with this bizarre Wifi problem. I have searched and searched and cannot find a solutions. Unfortunately this affects 3 computers in my household. And as the resident amateur Linux tech support/Linux advocate, I will be held responsible if I don't figure out how to fix this quick. After some extensive playing around, this is the situation. I have this problem on Ubuntu 9.10, Mint 9 (based on Ubuntu 10.04) and PC Linux OS 2010.:

- About a week ago the wireless network I use stopped working. There was a major power failure on our block during this period. No idea if there was a connection. Since then, I have been able to connect, but I am no longer able to access the internet. I can ping my own IP and my router, but no website (niether by IP not URL).

- When I booted my computer in Windows, it connected to the internet. My neighbours (whose network I am using) are also windows users, and are able to access the internet without problems.
- I have found exactly the same problem on my wife's laptop running Ubuntu 9.10 and on a Live CD of PC Linux OS 2010
- I am still able to log into all other wireless networks without problems.

I am perplexed. Is it possible for a wireless network to prevent internet access to linux computers? And inadvertently? I tried disabling IPv6 (which wasn't being used anyhow), but this didn't make a difference. I also tried manually entering an IP address and other network details into the network settings.

CentOS 5 Networking :: Wifi Client To Access Internet Via Laptop?

Jul 27, 2010

I have a Centos5.4 64bit laptop, having an eth0 and a wlan0. I connect this wired eth0 to a wall socket to access Internet via DHCP (eg the assigned address is like 192.168.192.xx). I do not have access to the ADSL router. How can I turn this laptop into a Wifi access point to allow, say my Ipad or any wireless-only client, to access the Internet thru this laptop ?

That is, communication between iPad to laptop is wifi(ad-hoc connection ??), laptop to the ADSL router is wired LAN. The laptop need to have some bridging build in ? If you can refer me some concepts, then I can follow up from there.

Or better yet, has anybody does this before ?

OpenSUSE Wireless :: Realtek 8172 Not Recognized - Fixed Right Or Not?

May 2, 2010

I bought a Toshiba A500 two days ago (was in a rush, my old A200 had a catastrophic failure) and the wireless doesn't work. I have two network related devices listed with lspci:

0c:00.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8111/8168B PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet controller (rev 03)

To my question: I found this article (HOWTO: Xplora E16 Ubuntu 9.04 32Bit and 64Bit with wired and wireless networking - Novatech Community Forums), which seems be consistent with my situation (wired connection works, wifi doesn't and my kernel is 2.6.31).
