I run 10.10 ubuntu and I would like to have one desktop that displays 4 active desktops so I can view the 4 at the same timeie watch film in top leftread emails in bottom rightetc..I hope you understand, I don't want to switch screens.
i wanted to add two more virtual screens if it is possible so i would have four? What are the disadvantages for that? why doesn't it already come with four?
I just want to know weather it is possible by some means to set different preferences for the two desktops that are available in ubuntu?? E.g.: different backgrounds, shortcuts etc...
Is it possible to have applications open on one of my other desktops instead of the main? Suppose I wanted to have a certain database-excel type or word document open everytime, or other programs that I need open but not cluttering my main desktop, can I do it?
I would like to toggle between 2 or more wallpapers on my 4 desktops (Compiz) with a simple hot key. Is there a command I can add to the Compiz command settings that toggles between 2 wallpapers?
So I've seen the tutorials where you simply tell nautilus to not draw the wallpaper and then use ccsm's wallpaper-plugin to set different wallpapers. It's just that I don't seem to have said plugin Where could it be?
(I have no doubt this had been asked before, but Googling has turned up numerous results - many of which are written with the assumption that you're a Linux Pro, which I'm certainly not. If there is a more relevant thread already active please point me towards it.)I'm looking for a tool, or console command, to tell certain programs to automatically open on a specific desktop. i.e. Instead of TweetDeck, Thunderbird and Pidgin all appearing on Desktop 1 when I open them up, I want Thunderbird to always live on Desktop 4, TweetDeck to always live on Desktop 3, etc.
In my previous versions of ubuntu(8.04, 9.10), I have been able to open applications and folders on one desktop and then drag and drop them onto any other desktop. I upgraded to 10.04 recently on two different computers and this functionality seems to be gone. I can drag around but the cursor stops when it hits the edge of the desktop instead of popping over to the next desktop. The only visible option is to right click and choose move to right or down workspace. This is okay but it can take several steps to move them diagonally if needed.
I have problem with remote Windows desktop. If I connect from my Ubuntu 10.04 to remote Windows XP SP2 desktop, I can type only digits, but no letters. If I connect from Windows XP, installed as guest in VirtualBox - everything is ok, I can type without problems.
hen I was still using hardy heron, I made a few posts trying to figure out if there was a way to really take advantage of the separate workspaces/desks.Has any progress been made in this direction? I want to do more than move firefox windows around. I want to dedicate a workspace to different projects or aspects of my life. I want to have different icons up in each one that relate to the project I'm working on and only that project
How to set independent configuration for each of the workspace, the 4 workspace that could be switched from the bottom-right corner?Gnome supports 4 workspace, but now it seems on my computer all of them share the same wallpaper, same files and folders on the desk, and the same google gadget. But I'd like to put different kind of files on different Gnome desktop. How should I do?
I lost those ALT+CTRL+RIGHT | LEFT combination to switch between my desktops. I even tried to change the combination using compiz and it also did not work. How can I restore this ?
I've just installed kubuntu 10.04 on a new Toshiba Portege laptop, and managed to delete my panel by accident! I've configured a new panel with everything I want except one thing: the little map of the multiple desktops (Virtual Desktop). I simply can't find a way to get this widget back.
In Ubuntu 10.04 running Gnome I can right click on any window and it gives me an option to show that window on all desktops, so even if I switch to a different virtual desktop, that window will always show.Is there a command in terminal that can do this?
Using awn on the right (or left) I cannot get the shiny switcher to allow me to have the desktops in a column - they always stay as a row- I say always - they did show once, but never again. Anyone got any idea as to why? MY search skills appear to be sadly lacking on this one. Tried removing the configs and starting again - no difference.
I am running Ubuntu 10.04, my video card is an ATI Radeon HD3200. When I hook up my tv to my laptop via an HDMI cable, I am having an issue in the multiple desktop configuration. The audio and video work great in both the cloned desktop mode, and the multiple desktop mode (the extended displays cuts my laptop image in half though). However, when I am using multi-desktop, if I mouse over (or drag a window) from display one to display two, I can not bring my mouse back into the first display (it doesn't matter which display is which, tv or laptop)
I've come accross a problem after upgrading to Maverick. I use multiple desktops and I run multiple apps, in every desktop.
The problem is, it seems the apps which are running in the desktop which is not active freezes.. it happened twice that I launched a console application, and it started to run all ok (it was a scientific computation who takes 3-4 hours to get completed); I then switched to another desktop and left the pc, and after 10 hours I discovered that the app was still at the beginning of the simulation! The only explanation I have thought of is that the app is being paused by the system, but things like these never happened with previous versions of Ubuntu.. And the freeze does not happen instantly, but probably after a few minutes..
I always run kde AND gnome on my laptop. Now I have a netbook and I would like to do the same thing with the netbook editions. The problem is that once I install the kubuntu netbook edition my ubuntu netbook edition becomes regular gnome and I lose all the things that make the netbook version fun. It doesn't make a difference what order I install things in. My login screen has multiple choices but GNOME, Ubuntu Netbook, and Ubuntu Netbook 2D all login to regular gnome. Is there a way I can have both the kde and gnome netbook desktops?
I have extended desktop working on my netbook (finally, by turning off compiz), but now Gnome prefers my netbook's main screen as the main display (with the panel and such) instead of my external monitor. How can I switch this? I don't see any setting for it in the Display dialog.
I'm using Ubuntu 9.10, and recently I tried to set up a second screen to extend my current laptop. Ever since that moment all my compiz desktop effects are all crazy. I get all lines of other desktops screens scattering all over the pace. The compuz cube effect as exaple as you can see in the screenshot below. As you can see in the screenshot that below the active windows I get some weird graphic error. Before setting a second screen compiz runned just fine. I can only use my laptop now with compiz settings completely disabled.
I'm trying to develop a system that records different desktops at the same time. I have developed a audio-videochat system and I want to be able to record what happens in every room, so my starting idea was:
1) Open a graphic terminal for each room. I have succeeded using vncserver :NumberDisplay. 2) In each terminal, run firefox at each URL. I succeeded too because firefox lets me specify in wich NumberDisplay I want it to be open 3) In each terminal, run recordmydesktop to record. It allows too to specify the NumberDisplay.
My problem now is that it seems that the sound card is "shared", so the sounds recorded in the display 1 includes the sound generated in all others firefox windows. I havnt found an analogy for the sound as the display is for the graphics.
I have thought some ideas but I havnt been able to materialize anyone. Im tried to create virtual sound cards and specify one for each vncserver, I tried to redirect the sound of each firefox window to one "channel" (read firefox delegates the sound so that might not be an option), I read many things about pulseaudio, jack and several stuff that I just havnt been able to work.
I am looking for a server solution that would allow me to deploy Windows Desktops and software to clients on the network. Ideally I am looking for a Linux server solution but would consider a Windows Open Source alternative.
In the past I have used Symantec Altiris Deployment Server.
We're trying to replace XP with a XP/Ubuntu dual boot on a bunch of old desktops (P4, 512MB RAM) and IDE drives. Unfortunately I'm not old enough for experience with IDE drives and the whole master/slave thing
I do not want to install Ubuntu on same disk as XP and use GRUB because the transition needs to be seamless with as little margin for error as possible and enabling the users to boot into either OS on a separate disk So I've decided to plug in another old IDE HDD into each desktop and install Ubuntu on that. Each desktop is equipped with a Cable Select cable with clear Master and Slave labelling.
So what should I do w/ regards to the Jumper settings? What about bootloader? Should it go into the slave Ubuntu disk? Can Ubuntu be made master and then offload the booting to XP through GRUB somehow (whilst leaving XP's disks untouched)?
I have a 64bit desktop and 64bit laptop. I upgraded both to 10.10 and they both have the same problem with compiz. Even though I selected the cylinder distortion, the rotating desktops will not deform to a cylinder unless I select "Wallpaper" in compiz but when I do that, the cylinder is completely transparent AND objects (like windows or bouncing/squishing icons in AWN appear not to refresh. Like a window will not disappear after closing.
As an aside, I have four different wallpapers selected for the four different desktops, but none of them display when I select "Wallpaper" in compiz, I just get the transparent cylinder.
If I deselect "Wallpaper" in compiz, the problem with the refresh disappears immediately, as does the transparent wallpapers but the cylinder becomes disabled and I am left with a cube with a single wallpaper and no ability to decrease opacity during rotation.
This has happened with both my desktop and laptop. I have tried uninstalling all compiz components in Synaptic Package Manager and adding them back one at a time in case I added some conflicting components but this doesn't seem to help.
I did not change settings in the updates, so I have to assume that the problem has something to do with a bug in Compiz. The two computers have different video cards and the drivers are up to date, so I'm at a loss.
Has anyone else found this problem? Has anyone been able to display the cylinder distortion with four desktops with different wallpapers?
I'd like to run a number of applications full screen (e.g., VirtualBox, Vendetta Online) but I'd also like to switch to my other Gnome Desktops easily.
Unfortunately, these applications seem to intercept my default and all other hotkeys I have tried for switching desktops ... I know there is a solution for VirtualBox via the host key, but I am looking for something more "generic".
Is there, for example, any way to catch key strokes in Gnome/Compiz before the full screen app receives them?
