Ubuntu :: Freezing Programs On Inactive Desktops
Oct 14, 2010
I've come accross a problem after upgrading to Maverick. I use multiple desktops and I run multiple apps, in every desktop.
The problem is, it seems the apps which are running in the desktop which is not active freezes.. it happened twice that I launched a console application, and it started to run all ok (it was a scientific computation who takes 3-4 hours to get completed); I then switched to another desktop and left the pc, and after 10 hours I discovered that the app was still at the beginning of the simulation! The only explanation I have thought of is that the app is being paused by the system, but things like these never happened with previous versions of Ubuntu.. And the freeze does not happen instantly, but probably after a few minutes..

(I have no doubt this had been asked before, but Googling has turned up numerous results - many of which are written with the assumption that you're a Linux Pro, which I'm certainly not. If there is a more relevant thread already active please point me towards it.)I'm looking for a tool, or console command, to tell certain programs to automatically open on a specific desktop. i.e. Instead of TweetDeck, Thunderbird and Pidgin all appearing on Desktop 1 when I open them up, I want Thunderbird to always live on Desktop 4, TweetDeck to always live on Desktop 3, etc.

I use a program that has 3D graphics everything has a 'laggy' appearance and freezes for short seconds. These programs included any of the games from Ubuntu Software Center, along with other applications such as games ran through Wine(seperate problem).
Things to keep in mind:
-I've downloaded the automatic updates through Ubuntu Software Center.
-I'm fairly new to Ubuntu(still learning).
-Provide as many details in, if, you post a possible solution.
-I'm only using Ubuntu 10.10 as my OS, no dual-boots with Windows or any other OS.

Several times in the last few days the desktop has frozen. I don't know if it's KDE issue or another conflict. All programs seem to continue running smoothly, but none of the menus on windows will work, or anything in the task manager, or desktop itself. I've tried killing the task manager but it doesn't affect the issue. If I knew what process was causing this, I might be able to restart it.

Mouse is active and I can enter through other non-admin accounts with no password required for their login.Keyboard works fine once I can get past the login. Doesn't work on normal, classic or safe mode. Keyboard driver (system-wide)set to Dell Inspiron 6xxx/8xxx.

I installed ubuntu 10.0.4 TLS version and my desktop freezes after a period of inactive time: the screen doesn't change and the apps do not response. It will resume after any key-stroke or mouse action. Is it a feature of 'power-saving' or something else? I need my ubuntu keep 'alive' all the time.

I like the compositor options I get from Xubuntu rather Ubuntu because I havent really found a way to make the inactive windows transparent in Ubuntu. But I also like the transparency options I get for the panels on Ubuntu. I can make the panel transparent but keep the icons and text and Im pretty sure launchers not. Is there a way I can edit the panels in such a way in Xubuntu or vise versa for Ubuntu with the compositor options on Xubuntu?
First Screenshot is Ubuntu
Second Screen shot is Xubuntu
I want the red transparent panel from Ubuntu on Xubuntu or the compositing style from Xubuntu to Ubuntu.

I used Gparted to resize the swap area, and doing so changed the UUID so now the swap memory is not activated automatically and hibernation is also inactive. i got some info about this in a previous thread, which became inactive, and could not fix the problem.the output of sudo blkid is:Quote:

I had some issues with my RAID6 array (with 15 disks), where 5 disks got disconnected (each five disks is connected to the motherboard via 1 SATA cable), which brought down the RAID array. I fixed this problem via readding the disks and running the array:
Code:
mdadm -R /dev/md1
However, after rebooting, the array appears inactive, and I have to go through the same motions to fix this and make it active.
The array is present in the /etc/mdadm/mdadm.conf, though also 2 other raid arrays (3 arrays total):
Code:
DEVICE partitions
# auto-create devices with Debian standard permissions
CREATE owner=root group=disk mode=0660 auto=yes

I've been searching and have been unable to find a solution. My current theme is rather dark, for reading at night, etc. And with inactive windows on the screen, the border changes to white from black and makes it difficult on the eyes.
Is there a way to change this inactive color to another, such as black or dark gray?

I have v 10.10 and I had to hook up with ethernet cord to download and activate both broadcom b43 and sta drivers. Once they were both downloaded and activated my wireless worked fine. (Also I have an hp mini 210-1000 if that helps.) After unplugging my laptop and using it, if it dies or if things are running really funky and it seems like it could use a restart, or on one of the many occasions where I am not going to be using it for a few days and just shut it down, as soon as I start it back up.
I find that sta driver still says activated under system - admin - additional drivers, however the b43 now says inactive, and my wireless wont connect to any router, even though it can detect them, until I connect with the ethernet cord and redo the whole driver activation for both, and then restart. This happens every time, and although I don't often take my laptop out of my room, my router is away from my desk, so this is a major inconvenience when i have work to do, or if I were to ever take it out somewhere with me.

turn off the feature that causes the inactivate windows to loose their opacity. I use two monitors and have a number of applications running on each monitor. All the windows on the monitors have important information that I use. However, all the windows that are not active loose opacity and it's very hard to read their content unless I constantly click on the windows. One of my next upgrades for this year includes adding a Video card that has support for more than two monitors so that I have easily have even more windows in view. With the opacity lost it's going to be very hard t work in the environment.
I'm running Ubuntu 11.04 with the default Unity desktop. By the way, I'm sure if I boot into Ubuntu Classic or Unity 2D the problem would go away. However, I'm trying to use the default Unity desktop, as much of my reading appears to indicate some of the alternate boot options might be eventually be removed as an option. Also, I would like to experience the Unity as suggested by the developers. So hopefully this is a feature of the Unity 3D that has a user adjustment control.

Video card: nVidia G86 GeForce 8500 GT (rev a1) (lspci | grep VGA) Monitor: Samsung LN40C530, recently switch to from a generic Gateway 17" monitor that worked fine I've been using 9.10 x64 from a clean install since it came out and it's been working great. I recently upgraded my monitor from a generic 17" Gateway monitor to a Samsung 40" widescreen HDTV (LN40C530), and that's when the trouble began. At first, the screen would lock up and become inactive. I could move the mouse, but clicking did nothing and the clock wouldn't update. I also could not switch to a terminal via Alt+F1, I could only do a hard reboot.
Then, when it started booting up, I would get horizontal black and white lines (which I'm still getting). Usually, it boots to the white glowing Ubuntu logo as files load in the background (@ 640x480, 60hz). When it tries to bring up the login screen (autodetected 1920x1080, 60z), I get horizontal white lines across. (see pics) Happens booting off both Live CD and HDD. When I use safe graphics mode on live cd, it boots okay @ 1600x1200, 60hz. After installing under safe graphics mode, it gives me a message "no modes available, resolution unsupported".
Right now, I'm back at trying to install 9.10 x64 (Karmic Koala) with either 1920x1080 or 1360x768 @ 60hz. I'm using a DVI out to a DVI/VGA adapter, and a VGA cable between the adapter and the PC port on TV. I've tried default configurations, restricted drivers 173, 185, and nVidia's 195. When I'm able to get to a terminal, I've tried sudo X -configure, but testing w/ X -config yields the same broken result. When I Alt+k+PrntScr, it does refresh but brings up the same white lines. Sometimes it boots just fine and even autodetects as "Samsung 40", but not as of the last 30 or so boots. Let me know where I can start for proper troubleshooting; I'm not sure which log files are important for this issue. Do you think I might just need to create a customized X config with exactly what I need?

I'm running a small ejabberd server on a LAN. Everything works fine out of the box except that when certain users disconnect they remain listed as online.
Specifically, Linux users who suspend their computers with their client still open are still listed as online. This is not the case for Windows or Mac clients.
I did some research and fount out that it has something to do with the TCP keepalive timeouts on the server. However I cannot figure out how to set those times.

I just installed Fedora 10. I entered my static network info in Network Configuration. When rebooting, the eth0 says Inactive. I've read many articles about this problem on earlier versions and tried many of the suggestion, but have not found a definite way of solving this. Is there a better way or a workaround to get this machine on the network?

After booting, my RAID1 device (/dev/md_d0 *) sometimes goes in some funny state and I cannot mount it.
* Originally I created /dev/md0 but it has somehow changed itself into /dev/md_d0.
# mount /opt
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/md_d0,
[code]...
In /proc/partitions the last entry is md_d0 at least now, after reboot, when the device happens to be active again. (I'm not sure if it would be the same when it's inactive.)
Resolution: as Jimmy Hedman suggested, I took the output of mdadm --examine --scan:
ARRAY /dev/md0 level=raid1 num-devices=2 UUID=de8fbd92[...]
and added it in /etc/mdadm/mdadm.conf, which seems to have fixed the main problem. After changing /etc/fstab to use /dev/md0 again (instead of /dev/md_d0), the RAID device also gets automatically mounted!

I just configured two raid setups but after a reboot they are not mounted and seem to be inactive.
md127 = sde1, sdf1 and sdi1 (raid 5)
md0 = sda1 and sdh1 (raid 0)
Code:
root@server /]# cat /proc/mdstat
Personalities :
md127 : inactive sdf1[1](S) sde1[2](S)
78156032 blocks
md0 : inactive sda1[0](S)
488382977 blocks super 1.2
unused devices: <none>
Code:
[root@server /]# fdisk -l | grep "Disk /"
Disk /dev/sda: 500.1 GB, 500107862016 bytes
Disk /dev/sdb: 80.0 GB, 80026361856 bytes
Disk /dev/sdc: 122.9 GB, 122942324736 bytes
Disk /dev/sdd: 160.0 GB, 160041885696 bytes
Disk /dev/sde: 40.0 GB, 40020664320 bytes
Disk /dev/sdf: 40.0 GB, 40020664320 bytes
Disk /dev/sdg: 1500.3 GB, 1500301910016 bytes
Disk /dev/sdh: 251.0 GB, 251000193024 bytes
Disk /dev/sdi: 40.0 GB, 40020664320 bytes
Disk /dev/sdj: 500.1 GB, 500107862016 bytes
Code:
[root@server /]# cat /etc/mdadm.conf
DEVICE /dev/sdi1 /dev/sdf1 /dev/sde1 /dev/sda1 /dev/sdh1
ARRAY /dev/md127 UUID=5dc0cf7a:8c715104:04894333:532a878b auto=yes
ARRAY /dev/md0 UUID=65c49170:733df717:435e470b:3334ee94 auto=yes
As you can see they now show up as inactive. And for some reason sdi1 and sdh1 are not even listed. What can I do to get them back? To make matters worse I placed some important data on them, and even if I was clever enough to keep an extra copy on another drive, guess which drive that was? So, I need to get them activated as is (at least so I can get the data of them) before I can rebuild them from scratch. I'm running Mandriva 2010.1 and rated tehm using the built in disk partitioner.

I'm somewhat stuck I fiddle with intel ss4200 NAS where I managed to install Slack 13.1 on some spare IDE HDD that was lying around (instead of that crappy 256 MB DOM). Anyway, everything works except one thing...
The setup is: 1x IDE HDD with Slackware on it. 4 x 1TB drives in RAID 5, which when mounted make 3 different logical drives. Everything works, /dev/md0 is created, pvc on top of it with 3 different drives. Well at least until I reboot. After reboot /dev/md0 is not automatically assembled and due to that - lvm stays inactive. Of course, I can make a script and put it in rc.local that will activate and mount what I want but I'm sure that there is one more elegant solution for that.
At the moment I need to issue: mdadm --assemble /dev/md0, vgchange -ay, mount -a and vgchange -an at shutdown. I checked parts concerning LVM in rc.S but I'm clueless. Kernel on the system is 2.6.36, mdadm - v2.6.9 and LVM version: 2.02.64
