General :: Shared / Home Separate Desktops?

Apr 20, 2010

I have a laptop running two versions of openSUSE, 11.2 & 11.3M5. I'm using a shared /home partition for both.I would like to have different desktop settings for each version but haven't been able to figure out how to do that. Primarily different wallpaper or background color.I know I could use different users on each version, but then I wouldn't have access to all the sub-folders from the other user.

General :: Good Support To Multiple Desktops AND Multiple Monitors

Jun 4, 2010

I'm starting to have A LOT of opened windows in my machine. Sometimes within a project, I have e-mail/task management/personal e-mail/twitter, and a lot of different opened applications/terminals in my Linux workstation.Sometimes it would be interesting to have different workspaces to projects instead of this configuration I have nowadays that are classes of work (bad name, I know, but I think you got the idea).I'm starting to think about using two monitors: one with Corporate Management, Work and Personal. The second monitor is only the development state: each workspace here is about a project being worked on instead of groups of works like before. A workspace may be implementing different classes for example.

My question is: I just want to change to a second monitor using the mouse. I want to still be able to change workspaces in the same monitor using keyboard shortcuts. The keyboard shortcuts wouldn't change monitors, just worskpaces on the same monitor. All the tutorials I read (like this one) only tells how to use multiple monitors but doesn't answer my question about keyboard shortcuts.Does Linux (Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx or Debian 5.0.5 Lenny) support this envisioned setup (Different workspaces in a way that keyboard workspace switching only works in the current monitor) ? If so, how?I haven't tested this setup, that's why I'm asking. In this question the user says it works exactly how I want it to behave, can someone else confirm it?

Debian Configuration :: Separate Virtual Desktops On Dual Monitors?

Jul 19, 2011

I have a ThinkPad W520 with nVidia Quadro 1000M and Nouveau drivers. I use external monitor with extended desktop using XRandR. My beef with this setup is that I get just one virtual desktop of a (1440+1920)x1080 size whereas what I would like to have is being able to have one separate (set of) virtual desktop(s) on my 1440x1080 external monitor with, for example, some reference material open, while have other programs working on another (set of) virtual desktop(s) on my main 1920x1080 screen. I've read that this might be possible with so called zaphod mode, but it looks like it involves static rules in xorg.conf which I would like to avoid since from time to time I need to carry my laptop with me without external monitor.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Mouse Over With Multiple Desktops?

The audio and video work great in both the cloned desktop mode, and the multiple desktop mode (the extended displays cuts my laptop image in half though). However, when I am using multi-desktop, if I mouse over (or drag a window) from display one to display two, I can not bring my mouse back into the first display (it doesn't matter which display is which, tv or laptop)

OpenSUSE :: Can't Configure Taskbars For Multiple Desktops?

Apr 8, 2010

I am hoping I have a simple one to solve here! I've been looking around online, trying to find out how to configure multiple desktops to have their own taskbar. Most of my results suggest that I should be able to click on the menu, choose favorites, and go to Configure Desktop. In the new window, I should see a taskbar section on the left hand side?I am running OpenSUSE 11.2 on two machines and neither of them have this option. I just wanted to see if somebody knows where I can find the window to configure separate taskbars for each desktop?

General :: Ubuntu Distributions - Put Multiple Virtual Desktops In Panel

Oct 22, 2010

I first tried latest version 10.10 desktop. very slow booting in a Centrino CPU laptop not booting at all in a N455 CPU netbook. Tried version 10.04 which seems to work better fast booting in Centrino CPU laptop. fast booting in N455 CPU netbook. From Centrino Laptop with Windows XP on HD, once loaded Ubuntu as persistent live program from a USB drive, tried to install the program on SD memory card in PC slot. Upon request, installation made onto that memory only, not on inside HD, hence formatting only that memory. Upon completion, after removing the external memories and booting again the PC it does not boot of its own any more. XP OS damaged. I have recovered the system with a Toshiba backup CD but the HD has been formatted and all data lost. How can this happen ? I'll never try anymore to permanently install Ubuntu. I'll use it as persistent live on an external memory. I only have an old PC laptop with 128 MB RAM for further installation testing but no Ubuntu release can boot there. By the way, Lubuntu 10.10 look more fast and safe although appears to have more limitations then Ubuntu 10.10.

Debian Configuration :: Multiple Virtual Servers Be Setup In 2 Desktops?

Jun 12, 2010

I now have 2 desktops running debian. I have virtual servers running in desktop 1, and I am hosting my photos using Gallery2. I have copied Gallery2 and the mysql over to desktop 2. I have entered port forward to desktop 1 using port 80 (using my router), and desktop 2 using port 1000. I can only access Gallery2 in desktop1. If I tried to access Gallery2 in desktop 2, I got re-directed to desktop1.

Questions:

1. Are home routers capable of port forward to more than one computers in a home network behind the firewall of the router? It is Belkin N+ router.

2. Can multiple virtual servers be setup in 2 desktops?

According to Distrowatch, the two most downloaded distributions are Mint and Ubuntu. I have put both on my computer. In Mint I can find no way to put multiple virtual desktops in my panel. In Ubuntu 10.10, when I go to synaptic package manager the settings tab with the repositories is dimmed out. I have enabled the sources list in administration but it is a less convenient way to add repositories. Despite what the linux community seems to think, I find that Simply Mepis and Pclinuxos are better for actual use.

Software :: How Force Multiple Processes To Run On Separate Processors

Sep 2, 2010

when I start my application it creates a message queue and forks a process. The child process reads multicast packets from the network and writes to message queue. The parent process reads packets from message queue and compares source ip and sequence number (it is part of payload) with last 64K packets received to see if it has received a duplicate packet. I am using message queue as a buffer because I do not want child process to drop any packets while it is comparing it with previously received packets. The message queue is large enough to contain 64K packets. To compare the old packets I am using array of structures as circular buffer. During a spike I may receive 100 - 120 packets per milli second.

When I run my application, the parent process keeps up with the child process, I can see that with "ipcs -q". After about 30 seconds it cannot keep up and the size of message queue keeps increasing until it is full. When I run "top" I can see that one CPU/core is hundred percent busy while other 7 cores are idle. It seems that both processes are running on same core and the child process gets interrupts everytime there is a packet on the net and starves the parent process.I am running RHEL 5. The system has 24GB memory and my application is the only application running on it. It is a HP G6 server.

For some simulation, I am trying to configure a setup of 3 ubuntu desktops (one of them with multiple network cards) to behave in the following way:

Each one of them should be a separate network not seeing the others (including multicast addresses) They need to have internet access through the machine with multiple network cards. So from the point of view of each machine they define a LAN in which it is the only device and have internet access through the gateway machine.

What do I need to do to configure these machines for the above setup?

Installation :: Multibooting Multiple Distros With A Separate / Boot Partition For GRUB

Mar 27, 2010

Noobish question on multibooting multiple Linux distros. I have four of the current major Linux distributions. Each has been installed and run individually (no other Linux distribution installed) in a dual-boot configuration with Windoze. No problem.

What I want to do is install all four Linux distributions and multiboot them. Reading the internet it would seem this is a simple task with GRUB. The short version being - install a Linux distro with a separate /boot partition for GRUB and use GRUB to boot the other Linux distros from the GRUB boot menu.

So I installed one of the Linux distros with a separate partition for /boot. The distro installer installed GRUB in /boot and correctly setup a dual-boot configuration with Windoze. GRUB was installed to the MBR. Next I installed a second Linux distro in its own root partition and told the distros installer NOT to install GRUB to the MBR, but rather, to the boot sector of the root partion of the second Linux distro. Installation was uneventful (and I could access the second Linux partition from the first installed Linux distro, things looked ok). Then I added to following to the installed (MBR - /boot) GRUB's menu.lst:

Code: title lixux distro 2
root (hd0,7)

chainloader +1 After which I rebooted the system and the new entry for the second Linux distro now appears in the GRUB boot menu. I selected the second Linux distro from the boot menu and got the following GRUB error: Error 5 : Partition table invalid or corrupt

Programming :: BASH - Output Of Snmpget With Multiple OIDs Into Separate Variables

Jul 7, 2010

I have a problem with snmp answers being empty or having spaces.

What I already have:

#get all interface indexes (if you wonder - I'm working for a cable company and different cablemodems have different number and types of interfaces):

The problem is the physical address which is sometimes empty and the description which has spaces. So I'm doing 2 snmpgets which is slower than 1 snmpget (sometimes I have up to 18 interfaces).

I'm trying to explain it a bit simpler.

Interface 5 gives me back the following lines:

Ethernet CPE Interface

Now the first line should go into variable ifadm,
2nd line should go into variable ifoper,
3rd line should go into variable ifspeed,
4th line should go into variable iftype,
5th line (which is empty) should go into variable ifphys and finally
6th line (which has spaces) should go into variable ifdescr

General :: Ubuntu And Windows - Separate HDs ?

Dec 21, 2010

Running a Dell XPS/Dimension 630i. It came with "SATA 2 RAID 0 With Dual 500GB Hard Drives." I have installed a new, third non-raided drive and installed Ubuntu on it.

So now I have Windows on the original hard drive and Ubuntu Linux on the new HD. When I get to the boot menu where I can select an OS, if I select windows I get an error: "No such drive, no such disk." Also, strangely in the first place, in order to even get to the bootloader menu I have had to disable ALL ports under the RAID config. Unless I do this, I will just get to a never-ending blinking cursor.

I have tried every conceivable CMOS config and nothing else works. Tried setting port 3 (the new HD w/ Ubuntu) to first hard disk boot priority. Tried disabling all other ports and enabling the Ubuntu HD port and vice versa.

I have some pictures of boot up: first one is strange error i get after messing with CMOS to finally get ubuntu install to work.

Then the boot menu:

Then error:

Also, note that I can actually access all files from the raided Windows drive through Ubuntu.

Ubuntu :: Separate Partition Both For Home And Windows Documents?

Mar 12, 2010

Is it possible to use this spare partition both as a /home and as a Windows Documents partition..?

I'd need to set Ubuntu to automount it and it'd need to be in FAT32 or NTFS for Windows to recognize it but I don't see why it shouldn't work... even though I have no clue how? I'll keep on researching but I couldn't find much concrete info on the topic. I'll try different search terms meanwhile.

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Boot Windows XP (separate HDD) After Upgrade To 10.04

Jun 15, 2010

Basically, as the topic reads, I normally run Windows XP, and installed Ubuntu on a new HDD this week (Karmic). However, realising later that there was a new release, I just upgraded through the network, completely ignorant of their being anything wrong with this (Windows drive still being connected at this time). Now Ubuntu boots fine, but when I select Windows through the GRUB set-up, it just displays a black screen with the '_' cursor blinking and goes no further.

I have absolutely no clue how to fix this, reading through various forum posts and messing with the boot command (or whatever you call it when you push 'e' at the GRUB screen) all day to no avail. One of the things I've download was the Boot_Info_Script, so hopefully someone out there can gleam some information on how the heck I can solve this issue and boot XP once again (hopefully without having to just blow away one or both of the OS's and doing a completely clean install). If there's anything I can do to provide any further required information, My RESULTS.txt:

I'm very new to ubuntu and the only guides i've seen are fairly complex. I was just wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction? p.s. Is there maybe a way to create an image of my current ubuntu nstillation/settings/apps etc. just in case I do something wrong and lose everything?

Ubuntu :: Installing 10.10 And Dual Boot With Windows 7 (Separate HDs)

Apr 5, 2011

I want to set up my PC so that I have Windows 7 installed on one hard drive and Ubuntu Studio installed on a completely separate hard drive. I currently have both hard drives installed in my PC and the larger one (640GB) has Windows 7 installed and is currently taking up that entire drive. My other hard drive (160GB) has a wubi install of Ubuntu 10.10 on it so it shows up on the Windows boot menu. What I want to do is wipe the smaller hard drive and install Ubuntu Studio on it and have it show up in the boot menu just like my wubi install does.

I need to know things like:
1. When I install Ubuntu Studio, do I install the boot loader to the MBR of the hard drive I'm installing it on?
2. How exactly do I add Ubuntu Studio to the Windows boot loader?
