View 4 Replies View RelatedI guess I am getting 'old' but the other day I was looking for the 'magnifying glass' to look over detailed work. I am looking for a decent 'magnifying glass' for look web pages and such. I loaded Orca but was turned off by the 'machine voice' feature. I noticed Gnome-mag in my files list but that does not seem to work for me?!?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI liked Unity because I only had to press the super key to get a giant magnifying glass, type what I want, hit enter, and bam get the document/application I was looking for. Basically, no or minimal mouse use is the desire. Since I decided not to stick with Unity, I know there've gotta be apps out there that provide this functionality; I'm just not sure how to find them.
View 3 Replies View RelatedIt appears to me that fonts for Linux in general are rubbish. They couldn't get any smaller. I am new to linux having moved over from windows. I have a website that uses the Verdana font. Not recognized in Linux. Just about every forum I go on the fonts are barely readable they are so small. My screen resolution is 1024x 768. If there is no solution to this problem then I'm afraid it's back to windows for me as I'm getting very bad eyestrain. I'm not jesting there. Are there better fonts that can be installed? Incidentally, I tried Ubuntu which is worse.

I cannot install Kubuntu (or Unbuntu) 10.4 on my husband's computer. I have spent 5 hours on this and cannot get anywhere. I am deeply frustrated. The iso I burned to CD is good (works on 2 other computers). His computer will not boot from USB, no matter what I do to the drive order in BIOS. After loading the blue screen with the Kubuntu logo on it (and the blue-white dots), the screen changes to black and shows the following text:
BusyBox v1.13.3 (Ubuntu 1:1.13.3-1ubuntu11) built-in shell (ash) (initrafs) Unable to find a medium containing a live file system.
He really needs to get rid of WinXP. Kubuntu is what I have on my computer (and love it!). Here is some info about his computer:
OS Name Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
Version 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3 Build 2600
OS Manufacturer Microsoft Corporation

I'm trying to install The Sims 2 (which I'm aware currently does not run properly in wine anyway), using the multi-CD version. The installation goes normally, up until it comes time to switch from disc 1 to disc 2. The installer prompts me to insert disc 2, but it seems that Ubuntu still believes that the installer doesn't want me to open the drive, because, when I try to open it, it doesn't open, and a window pops up with the following message: Unable to eject CD-RW/DVD RW Drive DBus error org.gtk.Private.RemoteVolumeMonitor.Failed: An operation is already pending
View 3 Replies View RelatedI couldn't connect my Micromax 300G modem in Debian Linux. From internet (in Windows Vista), I came across the information of USB_ModeSwitch and then I downloaded it. While going to install it, I came across the problem that TCL-interpreter is not available in Debian Linux. Then again I restarted my laptop in Windows Vista and connected my Micromax modem and from internet downloaded TCL8.5.10-src.tar.gz. But while going to install it, I came across the problem that " configure: error: no acceptable C compiler found in $PATH " . Also as presently, I am unable to connect my modem therefore I am unable to issue the code:" apt-get update ".

View 1 Replies View RelatedI downloaded and mounted debian-8.2.0-amd64-netinst.iso on my work machine's VirtualBox v5.0.12 to check out Debian stable/Jessie's installer and clean installation in case I need to do it soon. I like the new installer compared to 11/24/2011 on my old desktop machine. It is much nicer, fancier with its advanced options, etc.
However, I ran into issues with its "Select and Install" part when I selected desktop managers (e.g., KDE and Gnome) and continued. It failed as shown in [URL] .... images. Why? I tried again from scratch and same thing. If I don't select any and just select non-GUI stuff (e.g, SSH and standard system utilities), then it works but I want the pretty GUI stuff.
Im not able to install the package mesa-32bit from this repository: Index of /repositories/X11:/XOrg/openSUSE_11.3. It tells me to make a huge change on architecture on many packages, plus downgrading mesa to 7.8.2 from 7.9 !

I have done a big big mistake (I could beat myself up for that) with my netbook and now I am sitting here, not getting openSUSE installed on it.
I wanted to try another netbook linux and installed (more by accident than intentionally) Easy Peasy Linux. This system is not bad, but cannot work with the wireless adapter in my netbook. However, I then wanted to install openSUSE 11.4 again, which ran fine on the netbook. But the install always gets stuck in different stages and I donīt know why.
Sometimes a failure message comes up: "filesystem is read only, rebooting in 120 seconds", but I am not really sure if this is for the harddrive or the usb stick. In other occasions, the bootprocess until install gets stuck at "starting KDM". Nothing happens then... thats it.
I already have reformatted the usb stick and copied the openSUSE Live CD via Imagewriter on it again... no success.
So now I am really confused, because I donīt know if there is something wrong with the harddrive? Or is it the stick itself? How can I find this out?
If it is the harddrive, how can I at least refomat it? Remember: no CD or DVD drive, just USB stick...
How can I find out if the image on the stick is ok? I already tested the install media and it said: "checksum ok"
I use openSuse 11.1 64 bit with FireFox and want to install Java.I go tho the Sun-site and have the choice between : two Linux RPM files and two non-RPM files. Basically, the installation reaches 50% and then I get a message : Failed copying image file to hard disk. I read somewhere that /root needs to be allocated a min of 10 GB, but the installer does not let me change the size /root to more that 7.2 GB. how can I go about installing it?

I downloaded the DVD 32 bit and 64 bit as I have 2 machines, one 32 and one 64. After I burn the disks, I put the DVD in and run the check media. The 32 bit version says invalid checksums, cd is broken. I try to install and ever single checksum is invalid, not just one. But every file. The 64 bit says it has bad sectors in it. And will not install. I have tried re-downloading them. Tried burning them on computers. Tried different burning speeds. Nothing. Is this just bad files on the website, or is this all my computrs?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm installing Drupal 7.0 on an old 11.0 box.
However, I'm unable to install the php5-gd rpm due to a missing depency libt1.so.
I have burned 9.10 on to one CD and two DVDs; none of them work. I've used ISOBuster (as suggested by someone on these forums), checked the md5 (which is admittedly an alien concept to me but, apparently, everything checks out just fine) and even tried installing on three different systems; my day to day PC, my work laptop and a home laptop - no joy on any Oh, and I've downloaded the ISO twice, just to be sure.
I know all about the boot menu etc on system startup because I have to use it on a regular basis in work (I'm in IT support for my sins ). When I select 'boot from CD', the disc begins to spin up but then does absolutely nothing and Windows loads as normal.
I've even tried the 'help me install' option from the disc but it generates the error 'Could not retrieve the required installation files', so obviously there must be something wrong with the ISO.
At present I've had to roll with the 'Install within Windows' option, which isn't ideal as my mouse dies after about 20 seconds of loading
user@ubuntu:~/gtk+-2.18.7$ ./configure --prefix=/opt/gtk
Consider adjusting the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable if you installed software in a non-standard prefix.
Alternatively, you may set the environment variables BASE_DEPENDENCIES_CFLAGS and BASE_DEPENDENCIES_LIBS to avoid the need to call pkg-config. See the pkg-config man page for more details.
I created a bootable USB using an iso file downloaded from ubuntu.com which reads:
ubuntu-9.10-desktop-amd64.iso
My processor is Intel core 2 duo t5750.
Unfortunately when I installed Ubuntu using the bootable USB, I think what I have installed right now is a 32-bit version of Ubuntu. How do I know? Well, I tried the "uname -a" command and it doesn't read "x86_64" anywhere! In fact it doesn't read 64 anywhere! Somewhere, after the command is executed, it reads "i686".
i downloaded the newest .iso (10.10) created bootable usb with universal usb installer, restarted my pc, entered bios, selected to boot from usb, restarted my pc, then at the setup i choosen "try without installing",and after that it gave me error "can not mount dev/loop0", also i tryed with cd 10.04 version it also have me errors. So i decided to try it on virtualbox, and on it it works perfectly..
