Ubuntu :: 11.04 And Gnome 3.0.2 - Back Up And Use On Another Computer?

Jul 5, 2011

I recently got Gnome 3.0.2 for my Ubuntu 11.04 distro, and I actually like it a lot! With that said, I want to get a netbook and use my exact set up on that, instead of my current desktop. I got Ubuntu 11.04 from downloading the ISO to a USB, and I thought that I could find the ISO in Ubuntu to start up the Startup Disk Creator.... and nothing.

Ubuntu :: Grub4Dos Error / Tried To Switch Back To Computer Control And Computer Went Black?

Jan 9, 2010

Here's the situation:

I have Ubuntu 9.1 with wubi and Vista on my laptop. I was playing my laptop through the TV, then I tried to switch it back to computer control and the computer went black. I had to hold to power button to restart, and suddenly grub4dos starts up when I try to launch ubuntu. I can still launch Vista. Is there anything I can do to save my system? At the very least, I would like to be able to copy data from my ubuntu system to my vista system. How can I do that? I can't find C:/ubuntu/disks. It doesn't seem to exist.

Ubuntu :: Frozen Computer / Get It Back To Life?

Dec 3, 2010

Any ideas how you unfreeze a computer?

Last night I decided to download a few games using a different tool to the Synaptic Package Manager. I can't think of its name at the moment but it gave a brief description of each app with a tiny screen-shot. I'd like to find out its name but the only thing that will move is the mouse pointer.

I left the computer alone last night thinking that I'd given it too much to do and thought that it would resolve itself when I woke up. Sadly the computer is still frozen with only the pointer moving around the screen.

Is there any way that I can get the computer back to life?

Or is my only option to hit the Off Button?

Ubuntu :: Getting Red Shutdown Computer Buttom Back?

Apr 30, 2011

I used to like having that Red Shutdown Button on the top panel in the far right corner next to my name on older Ubuntu versions. It was easy to add with the 'Add to Panel' right-click feature that Unity eliminated. Is there a way to put that Red Shutdown button back on the far right top? IMHO it works better than the present Unity shutdown button.

Ubuntu :: New 11.04: How To Get Gnome Back

Jun 25, 2011

I BTed 11.04 32bit DTS from ubuntu.com and installed on my Thinkpad X60s and after a fuss got my /home ported over, but Iǘe grown to hate the GUI, which I believe is called unity. I desperately want to switch back to good old gnome since I am fedup with trying to get this GUI to work, and to stop getting new unwelcome surprises all the time. I can even cut and paste with <ctl> c and <ctl> v. I was told there a way to do it at logon but it doesn work for me, there is no place to select classic. I finally found synaptic, though, so can I DL and install all the gnome stuff from synaptic and then make it my default GUI? If I install 11.04 on another computer can I pre-select gnome so I dont have all these problems?

Ubuntu :: Can't Get Plain Gnome Back

Jul 15, 2010

I used synaptic package manager and downloaded E16 (enlightenment)

Then I found out I couldn't get back into gnome without it. It puts its little windows in gnome EVEN when I select session "GNOME" without the -E16 tagged on.

I tried to remove it but that removes all the window borders title and minimize, close, maximize buttons(When I log out and back in)

Then I tried restarting would not boot back into ubuntu until I reinstall E16 in a new created account in root. Its got me trapped and I really do not want to reinstall..

Ubuntu :: Getting Back To Pure Gnome

Nov 18, 2010

EDIT: The way the ubuntu forums formatted it made it easier to understand, and I installed the misisng packages. So I installed kubuntu plasma desktop, so that I could try KDE, and decided I didn't like it. So I followed the psycho cat tutorial here on [URL] "Getting back to pure gnome on Ubuntu" I copy and paste the code there, and it starts uninstalling, but then I get this:

Code: Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming. The following packages have unmet dependencies:

libaccess-bridge-java : Depends: default-jre but it is not going to be installed or openjdk-6-jre but it is not going to be installed or sun-java6-jre but it is not going to be installed E: Broken packages I have absolutely no idea what to do. I know it has something to do with missing dependencies (anyone could, if they read the code) but I don't know what to do.

Ubuntu :: Gnome-panles Missing / Get That Back?

Oct 31, 2010

Stupidly I followed this guide to installing Awn- not noticing that the instructions for removing the panels would bork my system. I have tried the recommended fix code...

If it doesn't work for you, you can always go back by opening up a terminal (Ctrl + Alt + T) and lauching gconf-editor then changing the value above back to gnome-panel. Log out and back in again by using the command sudo service gdm restart in a terminal.

but that didn't work.

In the end I decided to re-install but I still have the same problem. Therefore the problem is somewhere in my config files in /home.

Any thoughts as to how I get this one sorted?

Ubuntu :: Gnome-panel Missing / Put It Back?

Jan 11, 2011

I installed ubuntu netbook edition on my desktop (from the Ubuntu Software Center) to test out Unity. It looked pretty cool, but every time I went to the sidebar it flashed black. I decided I didn't want to fiddle with it too much to get it working so I uninstalled the ubuntu-netbook package. Mutter was still hanging around though (and lot of other things I assume) so I uninstalled that as well. Now gnome-panel is gone and I don't know how to get it back. Any way to uninstall all those packages and put it back?

Ubuntu :: Changing Default Desktop Back To Gnome?

Jun 7, 2011

Today I installed Xubuntu desktop on my normal Ubuntu, to see what it's like, and to have the option to run a more minimal desktop when I want.

My only problem is that my login screen loads with the Xubuntu theme. This wouldn't be a problem except it makes it take significantly longer to boot into Ubuntu (Gnome).

How can I change it back so that Gnome is the default, and XFCE only gets loaded if I pick it at login?

what are my options with customizing Gnome at the login screen?

Ubuntu Installation :: Bring Back Gnome-app-install For Lucid?

Apr 30, 2010

I hate using Software Center. I can't pick more than one program to install at one time. It downloads only one program at a time. The downloads take longer. I'm not able to look at all available programs at once. It doesn't categorise the programs on the sidebar, but instead you have to use another icon window. Gnome-app-install was just easer to use. Anyone else feel this way?

Following lines taken from other replies in this post to make it easier to do:

-You can install gnome-app-install from this ppa repo.

-Update the repository (including the new PPA):

sudo apt-get update

-Install the gnome application installer:

sudo apt-get install gnome-app-install

-Run the gnome application installer:

gnome-app-install

Ubuntu :: Artifacts Left On Desktop After Switching To Awm Then Back To Gnome

Aug 13, 2010

I recently tried out the awm version of the desktop environment. When I switched back to the Gnome desktop, I found a couple of titlebar-like artifacts left on the desktop.I did some experimenting, using System Monitor and the Kill xxxx command and managed to rid myself of one of the artifacts. The remaining artifact can be taken care of by using kill xxxx comand for the gtk-window-decorator but, this basically renders window buttons useless after the command is issued.

I think I had a couple applications running at startup in Gnome desktop before I switched to awm, and they didn't start at startup when I returned to Gnome desktop, but the titlebar-like artifacts did.Is there a way to reset the state of the gtk-window-decorator in a manner that is less destructive, and which allows my desktop to be clear of this artifact?
