Debian Installation :: Configure GDM And Customize Login Screen And Wallpaper?
Feb 28, 2011
I just installed Debian 6.0 (squeeze) on my laptop with the GNOME 2.30 desktop on my Toshiba Satellite A100-VA3 laptop. I have never used GDM3. How do I configure GDM and customize my login screen and wallpaper?

I searched on the internet and notice that the setup gui for changing gnome login screen is no longer available (e.g. gdmsetup does not come up with a theme that can change login screen theme.)What is the right way or where there may contain such information? I google but most of returned are prior 2.30.2, which is the version currently I am using.

I am trying to customize the login screen on Ubuntu 10.04. I know about that way of running:
Code:
sudo cp /usr/share/applications/gnome-appearance-properties.desktop /usr/share/gdm/autostart/LoginWindow/ then logging out, changing the wallpaper, logging back in and running:
Code:
sudo unlink /usr/share/gdm/autostart/LoginWindow/gnome-appearance-properties.desktop
But that only lets me change the wallpaper, so now I have my own wallpaper but the login window (where you choose the username and enter the password) is in the middle of the screen covering my image. I would need to move it a bit to the side/corner, would this be possible? I took a look at the file /usr/share/gdm/gdm-greeter-login-window.ui, however it doesn't seem to be allowing you to change the position of the window.

I used Ubuntu Tweak to change the background of the login screen, but the highlighting on the names and buttons is still orange. I want to change this.Does 11.04 support GDM themes? Will GDM themes from gnome-look.org work properly in 11.04? Is there another way to do this without GDM themes?

It's been a while since I bothered, so I decided to download and compile my own kernel. When I got to the configuration part of the process, I realized why I haven't bothered in so long. Is that the best way to configure a kernel? A single window with a 100 page option tree containing 50,000 options where you have to go through practically every module and driver ever created? I mean, there's obviously some hardware detection going on. How else would the kernel know which modules/drivers to load and which to ignore? Why can't it be taken a step further and have the modules used be compiled right into the kernel when it's installed?
Some things like USB devices and other peripherals, it makes sense to leave them as modules and have them loaded/unloaded as needed. But processor options? Sound and video drivers? Hardware sensors? I realize that the modular approach is the best way to go for Live CDs, since you never know what mix of hardware someone is going to drop that CD into. But once you click the install button, shouldn't there be a higher level of customization taking place? Has anybody taken any steps to automate this process? Why isn't the kernel configuring itself at installation time?
On the other side of the coin, I know you can copy your current kernel config with the command "cp /boot/config-`uname -r` .config" to give you something to get you started on. Is there a way to have all your loaded modules (shown in lsmod) selected to be compiled right into the kernel, and any other conflicting modules discarded? For example, why have ATI, NVidia, Intel, and a host of other video card driver modules compiled and available externally when usually only one set is needed? Why have modules for every sound card under the sun, when each system usually has only one sound card?

I've installed a fresh Debian amd64 DVD version on my small HP Compaq 6537s / AMD Athlon X2 / 64. Everything went fine, I rebooted, the graphical login screen appeared, so I thought I will be able at last to run Debian on a computer ...
But then after login, the login Window disappeared, the "Debian" logo too, and... that's all folks! A nice blank screen. But the mouse is still perfectly drawn, so it's kind of weird.
Here's what tells me "uname -a" :
Linux olivierdebian 2.6.26-2-amd64 #1 SMP Sun Nov 21 09:17:22 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux
If I go to CTRL-ALT-F1, i login as root and I do a "/etc/init.d/gdm restart", I have the login screen back and this is once again the same scenario: login => ok => blank screen with mouse properly drawn and the Debian background color still there.

I like very much the Guest Session feature of Karmic, it comes very handy when someone needs to use your computer. However, it's only available if I'm already logged in, it won't show this option at login screen. Is there any way to make this possible? Also, I once tried the guest session and configured its appearance to my taste. The next time I entered, though, the default desktop reappeared. I know this happens because no setting is permanently stored for this session, so the only solution I can think of is to change the default configuration it is loaded from.

I just downloaded Debian's live CD .iso file. I put it on a USB stick and booted from it. It loads everything then presents me a login screen. I have no idea what the login and password is I've looked all over google and people said it was user: live pass: live or something like that. I've tried a lot of different combinations with no luck. So does anyone know the real username and password for this?

I have used Ubuntu since 7-4; I now have 10.4. However, in the last week I have been taken to the login screen three times. This could be potentially calamitous. Ctrl+Alt +Backspace have by default been disable since 9-4. There is no way I am pressing atl+Prtscr +K. I wonder if there is a new zap command in 10.4, and if so, how to disable it. I have never found the need to go back back to the login window. I am generally using the command line when doing this.

I have just did an upgrade from 9.04 to 9.10. I am planning to go to 10.04 . After the upgrade everything was ok but I noticed the GRUB was still legacy. So I updated my GRUB to GRUB2. Now when I boot, after entering my logon-id and password, it just brings me back to the login-id screen (to logon on). Any indication of what is wrong and how I should fix this ?
I have no encryptions. [added comments] Currently reading thread about login loop bug with 9.10 Followed instructions about possible missing pre-release update but even if it did do updates, I am still login screen looping. Doing additional researches until someone answers with the fix.
did :
CTRL + ALT + F1 switch to one virtual console
sudo service gdm stop
[Code]...

The problem is after I change wallpaper, logout and log back in the wallpaper reverts back to the previous wallpaper. Here's what I did from fc10 64-bit:
From System->Preferences->Look And Feel->Appearance choose Background tab.
Frolm Background tab click Add button and browse for the .jpg in ~/Wallpaper
Now wallpaper changes but doesn't persist on logout. Could a folders or config file have the wrong permissions?

I used ubuntu 10.04 for some months and it worked just fine. Suddenly when my little sister and brother used the computer it crashed (Could be because of some upgrade). Black screen after ubuntu loading screen. So I googled for a while but lost my temper so I loaded my ubuntu cd formatted the disk and installed ubuntu over again. This time i get to login screen and after login all i see is the wallpaper and mouse cursor. I can move the cursor but I cant right-click or anything. Ubuntu works perfectly in safe mode though!
A difference a noticed from the first time I installed was that the first time: I could choose to install proprietary drivers for my graphic card and wifi network card whith "Jockey". Now i cant and I have no wifi internet connection! I dont know how the graphic card works but apparently its using some kind of default driver as i can see things how to make my ubuntu work as good as before
Graphic card: ATI Radeon X1200 (It worked before with compiz, desktop effects and everything!) Network card: Broadcom Netlink BCM5787M (Yes this is also my wifi card because of the M in the end, also worked good as ever, before) Computer: HP Compaq 6715b

Fedora 15, fresh install.I changed the wallpaper from default to a solid colour. After switching between gradient to colour the system crashed logged me out and upon logging in it simply runs endlessly accessing my harddisk but never actually loading the desktop.I can kill X and reboot, but it's the same problem waiting for me on restart. I really don't want to re-install or delete users (to put it in context, I just spent 3 days trying to install Fedora because Anaconda doesn't know how to install GRUB correctly).

My last setup (years ago) ran fluxbox so because it was familiar I installed it as a secondary to xfce right off the bat. I download a lot of different stuff because I like to try out all the apps I can find but somewhere I broke something. I can still run fluxbox fine, but nither the Xubuntu nor Xfce sessions will run now. Last thing I remember changing was pulse audio(removed it for an experiment I was trying with jack audio), not sure if it is connected but when I try to login to xfce the screen goes black, flickers a few times then it brings me back to the login screen.
I tried failsafe but everytime I do my monitor gives me a "frequency out of range" error. I tried purging and reinstalling xubuntu desktop and xfce settings but I am thinking its my xorg config. My laptop is a Toshiba satellite M305D-s4830 with ATI Radeon 3100 mobile graphics card and I am running Xubuntu 10.10. Unfortunately I also broke the screen, so right now I am stuck with an external monitor till I get a new one.

I would like to post my problems here with Fedora 11 regarding that I am using Dell inspiron 1525, Dual core-N series. I have got two problems:
First;- After I updated my system, I have experienced a a login problem , which is each time I try to login and insert my password correctly it seems that it will login but it comes back to the same login screen as if I did not do anything, but after too many times it works.
Second: I read some posts in a website that talks about configuring the RPM fusion "Repo" and I did all the steps posted there , but after that whenever I try to update or download anything through terminal.... it appears the following:

I have installed VirtualBox and setup a Windows Vista host, initially with a .vdi of 10gb. That filled up quickly, so I added another 20gb secondary partition, after first trying to allocate a .vdi to a SCSI controller. Configured the drive in Windows (Computer Management), and all seemed ok. I shutdown VB, and rebooted my Linux host (openSuse 11.3). Now I keep bouncing back to the login screen, and can't login to Linux KDE, but can login to a console.I do have the following info:
/etc/fstab:
/dev/dis/by-id/ata-ST9250410ASG_5VG0B5VS-part5 swap swap defaults 0 0
/dev/dis/by-id/ata-ST9250410ASG_5VG0B5VS-part6 / ext4 acl,user_xattr 1 1
[code]....
I did see a message before, that I don't see anymore, that said it could not start NFS services due to missing entry in fstab. Another I'm seeing now is it couldn't start the avahi-daemon, no space left on device. This is odd, since I have a 200GB drive, with half of it left, only max 30GB set to VB. Here's my df -k output:
/dev/sda6 Use% is 100%
devtmpfs Use% is 1%
tmpfs Use% is 1%
/dev/sda7 Use% is 46%
So root "/" is mounted on /dev/sda6, which looks like it could be a problem, but why would this suddenly be a problem after working with VirtualBox? Could this be a matter of just freeing up space on /dev/sda6? Like the /tmp folder that's under "/"?
