Nov 9, 2010I can't seem to find this anywhere. I have burned Debian 5.06 for i386 and trying to login when running the live cd. What is the username and password to get in?

Jan 8, 2010I've completed the creation of a Live USB 9.10 install/configuration. I'm booting from a 16GB Flash USB now, with just about everything working, audio, video, wireless, etc. I'd like to remove some of the "live" features of the OS now, to make it more a bootable 9.10 full install. The first step, is to remove the auto-login feature of the live setup. I tried setting a password on the ubuntu user, but it still auto-logins.

Oct 14, 2010I recently downloaded and installed Ubuntu 10.10 from live-cd, this is a dual-boot system with windows xp pro installed. Ubuntu installed, but during install there were warnings of certain files that couldn't copy and I'd like to view them if there's a log containing those errors. I can boot into xp pro with no problem. I've logged into Ubuntu maybe 3x. The first time I tried it succeeded. After that it 's been hit and miss.
I've been able to get into system using live-cd and so far I've only found buffer error, I beleive that is drm related.
The machine is an:
emachine T-1221
celeron 1.3Ghz processor
512Meg ram
IntelDirect AGP 3D
As I do have internet connection while using live-cd, I can post whatever necessary files that are needed. In fact I'm going to boot it up and post output of dmesg.

Jun 21, 2010I have been here awhile, but have not posted much, and am a bit new to things again...I just burned a 10.04 Ubuntu Desktop Edition disc from the main Ubuntu page. However, when I load up the disc (boot from it), I get a login screen instead of a desktop or window asking for input.What am I doing wrong? I know on the older Live! discs you'd typically get a desktop or installation window.

Nov 21, 2010I seem to remember there is a section for questions about other distros but I can't find it anymore. I have made a live usb from a Debian testing live image (.img) using the dd command. It all worked well and it booted flawlessly. But then when it booted into the Debian screen it asked for my user name and password. I never set any user name and password so of course I couldn't log in.

Jun 16, 2011I decided to put a copy of Ubuntu 11.04 on a USB stick. Downloaded the image file and USB installer and built the stick with no problems. I REALLY don't like the new interface, so I went to the login screen tool and changed the login to come up in Classic mode. Trouble is, now when I try to bring the system up I'm presented with a log-in screen that asks for a user name and password. Since I'm using a live image (akin to a live CD) I don't have any user name or password established. Are there defaults that will allow me to log in? Or do I have to recreate the installation and create a user account that will let me log in?

May 28, 2010After installing from the LXDE live CD I am unable to login. I type in my username, and then my password, and then the prompt goes back to the username (in other words, nothing happens). I can however login via the virtual terminals.
Could this be an issue with the live cd? Or was it just a bad install?

Aug 17, 2010I am now at my 6th version of my opensuse build and I can't get it to start the graphical login.I am trying my build out on a VirtualBox using the live cd.This is what happens during installation :It will install properly. No error messages at all. I get the (graphical) options screen to select language and screen resolution settings, so far so good.I select the default (top) installation for my opensuse and hit enter.Then I will get the verbose progress and when it's finished, the verbose will ask me for my user name and password.Then I enter those correctly and the verbose will tell me to enjoy.I am then left with a blinking cursor, and don't know what to do next.
This is not what should have happened since in my build I had selected Configuration > Startup > Default runlevel > 5: Graphical loginI can find no reason for this failure since on my Windows system I have tried out several other Linux systems in the same way and never experienced this problem before.During the assembling of my packages I have payed close attention to select all packages required for a graphical login.An other problem is that although I selected the default language for my build to be Dutch, the default language during setup is still English.I hope there is someone who would be kind enough to be prepared to help me out, I am so eager to start trying out my self made OS.

Jul 17, 2011I just downloaded Debian's live CD .iso file. I put it on a USB stick and booted from it. It loads everything then presents me a login screen. I have no idea what the login and password is I've looked all over google and people said it was user: live pass: live or something like that. I've tried a lot of different combinations with no luck. So does anyone know the real username and password for this?

Dec 2, 2010I downloaded the .ISO for Fedora Core 14 Live, with the intention of installing it to my HDD.
I burn the .ISO with no reported problems.
I boot to the installation CD and can get to the point where it asks me to Login (a timer is also going down for Automated Login).
Once I click "Login", nothing else ever happens.
I can hear the disc spinning in the drive and it's trying to load something, but it never does.
I thought that maybe my older (2003) laptop might just be slow, so I allowed it to do whatever it seemed to be doing overnight while I slept.
Well, I woke up this morning and it was still doing the same exact thing with no results.

Oh, and I intend to dual-boot. I have already made a partition using Norton Partition Magic. It's NTFS filesystem for now, but I figured the Fedora Installation would give me an option to use that partition anyway - NTFS or not (meaning, it would wipe the NTFS file system and use whatever it is that Fedora Core uses). Am I mistaken in assuming this?

Sep 8, 2010I've done a good few ubuntu installations for friends and colleagues and now my Dad wants in on the action. His PC is more than capable of running ubuntu 32 bit BUT I've hit a brick wall I've never come across before. I've burnt a CD image of the 10.04 iso from [URL] on my ubuntu box and for some reason, his PC just won't boot from it. If I select the option to manually select the boot source, all I see is the hardware monitor telling me things like CPU temperature. As for the Live USB - nothing whatsoever. Is it possible that I've managed to corrupt the iso file somehow?

Apr 28, 2011Live CD: I dowloaded the ISO, burned it to CD, booted from this CD. It starts to load and I can see the purple background with the loading icons. Everything seems normal. But instead of ending up with the login screen, it ends up with a screen that says 'Please remove all bootup media and hit ENTER' or something like this. So I hit enter and then it shuts off my computer. That's it.
Live Stick: So I tried another option and created a stick with 'usb-creator.exe' that is on the CD. Then I start from that stick, but all I end up is a line of 'Syslinux bla bla copyright 20xx-2011'. That's it. Then it does nothing anymore. The cursor is blinking, but no prompt or whatsoever and keyboard input doesn't do anything.
Now something weird: When I insert Live CD and Live Stick at the same time and then boot my computer, then it boots into Ubuntu. Obviously it loads the first parts from CD and then the rest from stick. Because when I'm then in Ubuntu and try to format the stick, it says it can't do so, because there's system files from that stick in use.

There is a directive for squashfs in kernel configuration file but nothing for aufs and the patch available at linux-live site seems not to work.

Aug 18, 2010I have used Ubuntu since 7-4; I now have 10.4. However, in the last week I have been taken to the login screen three times. This could be potentially calamitous. Ctrl+Alt +Backspace have by default been disable since 9-4. There is no way I am pressing atl+Prtscr +K. I wonder if there is a new zap command in 10.4, and if so, how to disable it. I have never found the need to go back back to the login window. I am generally using the command line when doing this.

Oct 10, 2010I recently powered up my netbook... Selected my user log in, entered my password, and after a couple seconds I briefly see what looks to be the console and am returned to the login splash screen... I can Ctrl+Alt+F2 to get to the console and log in... but that is as far as I can get. This is the case for Gnome, Remix, and Remix 2D.
I can sudo apt-get (update, upgrade, etc) as well. It is the right password because if I type in a wrong one it presents an authentication failure dialog box.
How can I fix my log in screen and get to my desktop? I am Currently running 10.04.... waiting to get 10.10

Aug 4, 2011yesterday i installed slim login manager on my computer (eee pc 1018p, ubuntu 11.04), and now it cannot get passed the ubuntu loading screen (with orange dots underneath) when booting. i tried booting into recovery mode and that didn't work either. i also left the computer trying to boot overnight and that didn't work.
basically, during this loading screen that should eventually bring you to the login screen, i can alt+tab to see the progress of the load. the progress is stuck on
Is there anything I can do from grub to remove slim?or, is there any way I can access my ubuntu partition and save all my files?

Dec 24, 2010I don't what happened but yesterday I was working normally and then I shutdown the computer, today when I opened ubuntu it took me to tyy1 login screen, I entered my username and password then it took me to the normal login screen with the login drums sound and it wrote on my account (logged in) so I clicked it and I entered my password again and then I got to my ubuntu so what went wrong and how to fix it also I noticed that a new terminal in system tools occurred called Kernel (I didn't add it)
I'm using ubuntu 10.10 on Dell inspiron 1520 with Nvidia 8600GT and 3GB RAM

Apr 15, 2011I just bought this desktop from my friend and it runs win 7 and ubuntu 10.04. it worked very well the first two days until I changed the hostname of the system.
I did like: hostname myNewName
And everything worked fine. The problem now is when I start ubuntu and and reach username and password screen , I enter my password to login the screen becomes black and return me again to the screen where I put my password again. If I entered wrong password , the system message stating wrong password. On the other hand, when I try to run ubuntu from live-cd I can login easily and access my account.
My friend told me he removed Naultius package and reinstall it for some reason before he gave it to me. Note windows 7 is working properly.

Mar 15, 2010System was fine with :Ubuntu 9.04 (had also installed kde )then....I wanted to try some change to gdm so i downloaded gdm while building it , it asked "PAM" libraries to be installed so i installed PAM ... but ignored the instruction to reinstall SHADOW (library i guess..),Now :on booting system i get login menu but i am not able to login , it says some critical error occured
1) install new copy of UBUNTU and remove old
ps :1) i can log into system through live cd
2) i can use recovery mode boot and log into terminal as root(startx is not working from this terminal..

Jun 5, 2010I have just did an upgrade from 9.04 to 9.10. I am planning to go to 10.04 . After the upgrade everything was ok but I noticed the GRUB was still legacy. So I updated my GRUB to GRUB2. Now when I boot, after entering my logon-id and password, it just brings me back to the login-id screen (to logon on). Any indication of what is wrong and how I should fix this ?
I have no encryptions. [added comments] Currently reading thread about login loop bug with 9.10 Followed instructions about possible missing pre-release update but even if it did do updates, I am still login screen looping. Doing additional researches until someone answers with the fix.

Ubuntu :: Login But Almost Immediately Kicks Back To The Login Screen?
Sep 28, 2010When I try to login with my username, the one I created when I installed the OS, it seems to try to login but almost immediately kicks back to the login screen. No authentication error it just seems to just logout? The only change I made since last successful login was to add ". .alias" to the .profile file - the only entries in the .alias file are comments and "alias" commands. I have one other username but it is not in the sudo's list of users so I can not change anything in the master login.
