View 5 RepliesI can, on rare occasions, login to my gnome desktop with the sound theme enabled, but it usually crashes back to gdm while I'm still looking at the ubuntu logo. It does a resolution change, and I thought that might be my problem.
Then, my son noticed that, on those rare occasions we get into the desktop, the gnome-session crashes whenever a system sound plays.
I disabled the Ubuntu sound theme in failsafe mode, then could login to the normal gnome session.
This isn't the only machine that does this, and the other has the same model of motherboard, the ASRock 4CoreDual-VSTA. code...
First things first:
Ubuntu 10.04 32 bit, 2 gigs ram, Firefox 3.6.10
I looked around here and only found some, "it could be this or that" type answers from a year or 2 ago, so here's my question.
Does anyone have a definite answer yet, as to why firefox randomly freezes up/turns gray and doesn't respond? It seems to be more like after I've had it open for a good length of time. And seemingly when I use the auto scroll.
My pc is old socket 478 board. It was repaired and installed win xp it worked normal. but later I installed debian unfortunately in debian pc freeze after about 1 hour working. but in xp it was not freezing. what do you think is it from hardware problem.
View 4 Replies View RelatedEverytime I use keyboard shortcut such as Alt-Tab to switch windows, my whole ubuntu freezes. I can still move mouse pointer but I cannot click anything.
Anyone has an idea?
It starting working by itself
When the interface connects to the router, it seems to freeze the desktop
control alt backspace does not crash it to the run level 3, leaving a hard reboot as an option
Oh well time to stick a switch in the hall closet, lol.
Anyone had success in patching this?
I tried to install Ubuntu 10.10 Server 32bits and 64bits but each time the installer stopped at 45% during "Starting up the partitioner" with the message "Scanning disks".
I installed Windows 7 64bits on the disks without problem.
I installed IPCop 1.4.20 successfully.
However, I tried to install Fedora 14 32bits and 64bits but it also stopped (ie crashed the partitioner) during the "Install To Harddisk" via LiveCD.
Similarly, OpenNode 1.0 also crashed with a bug report that has alot of python error messages. All mean nothing to me.
I even tried to partition the disks first via Fedora 14 LiveCD. Still the same thing.
Has anyone encountered this sort of problems before? If so, any resolutions?
Could this be the problem with the SATA2 disks?
Im trying to install Ubuntu, here are my problems and the solutions ive tried: I've downloaded 10.10 in 64 bit and 32 bit. I've also tried with 10.4.1 LTS.I've tried burning it to a disc and i've tried making a bootable USB. (I ran out of dvds so im only trying from usb now).I load from the disc/USB and ill get the menu asking if i want to try ubuntu, install ubuntu, check for errors etc..... I choose try ubuntu and ill get the UBUNTU logo with the loading dots undernieth. The screen then glitches and theres multicolor lines frozen accross the monitor. Stuck that way until i restart. This also happens when i try to install it to the harddrive. It happens on both versions in both 64 and 32 bit. I checked the disc and all files are present.I've had ubuntu installed over a year ago.
AMD 64 3200 processor

What should i do? Heres an image i took with my phone. http:[url].....
I am attempting to boot both OSX 10.6 and Enterprise Linux 5. This is what I did: sudo yum install grub.x86_64
[Code].....
Now, however, when I restart and choose to boot from the Linux partition, I receive the "loading GRUB stage 2" message, and then I receive the standard GRUB menu where I should be able to just press enter and proceed. However, instead of letting me choose a boot option, it just freezes. It is hard frozen. Nothing works. I have two keyboards hooked up, and neither the arrow keys, nor any other keys will cause anything to happen. Even after waiting several minutes, it remains frozen, even though the timeout is set to 10. What on earth is causing this freeze? I am using the exact same instructions in my grub.conf that work on the grub command line. If I delete grub.conf, then it goes back to the GRUB command prompt where I can manually type everything in, and it always works.
When i turn on my computer and log in i get a notification that says "Phonon: KDE's Multimedia Library -- The audio playback device HDA Intel (ALC880 Analog) does not work." and the system falls back to pulse audio.
Also, i noticed that if i wake my computer from hibernation then the HDA Intel device will begin working again.
I read through the comprehensive sound guide with no luck, this behavior seems very strange to me and im not sure what is causing it. I would much rather use the HDA Intel sound device than Pulse Audio.
I just got Ubuntu and am new at this stuff. I have a dual boot windows 7 64 bit one and ubuntu 10.4. I booted ubuntu at startup and then tried to go online, but it says my wireless device is disabled. I tried pressing the keys on my keyboard to see if that may work, but it doesn't. I am lost and new at this.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am using the Fedora 13 Live USB on my Gateway MT6451 laptop. All the major things you want to work on a laptop with linux actually work! Even my Broadcom wireless card! But even though I can see wireless networks and connect to ones that are open with no problem, I can't actually connect to my Hidden WPA2 network. I put all the information in and it connects, shows a good signal, but doesn't acquire the correct IP. I have a 192.168.X.X address range on my network, but it shows a 10.X.X.X ip and no Gateway address.
If I can get this one thing working I will definitely be installing Fedora.
Originally after an installation of openSUSE 11.4, I had no internet connection at all, even when connecting with ethernet cable. But then I tried switching back to YaST and then back to Network Manager, and restarted a couple times, and now I have internet connection. DNS is also working, for Ping. The problem is that firefox does not use DNS and cannot resolve host names. I can use Firefox with IP numbers.

I've got a strange problem where my java is installed into firefox (v3.6.3) and firefox confirms this in about:plugins but when I go to a page that has a java applet, I get a blank page. oh I'm on openSuSe 11.x 32-bit (I know a lot of people have had trouble with this on 64-bit version).
previously I was getting errors about the plugin not being installed. so I installed java v1.6.0_15 using yast and then i created a symlink to libnpjp2.so in the firefox plugins dir: lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 58 Apr 6 12:27 libnpjp2.so -> /usr/lib/jvm/java-1.6.0-sun-1.6.0/jre/lib/i386/libnpjp2.so*
:~> java -version java version "1.6.0_15" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_15-b03) Java HotSpot(TM) Server VM (build 14.1-b02, mixed mode) now I don't get the errors on the web page anymore but instead get a blank white page that retains whatever image I drag across it - sort of like a rudimentary paint program. i restarted firefox and the os but the result is the same. does anyone recognize this behavior or have any advice? I can try a combination of downgrading versions of firefox and java but would rather only do that as a last resort.
I have a Ubuntu 10.04 fresh installation on my HP laptop. Installation successful and boot OK. But the desktop randomly freeze. During freeze(about 15s each time), all programs are not responsive. Sometimes I can switch program by click, but program seems locked. How can I know which module cause the freeze?

View 2 Replies View RelatedWe switched from unix to linux and we have an old report that extracted data from a database, output to an ascii file and then sorted the results in the file based on different arguments. The report now blows up when it runs, and I can only guess it is because the options for sort on linux differ slightly from unix. For example, here is one of the commands issued from within the report app that ran on the old unix box:
if sort-sequence = "descending" then
'sort -t~" -f +3.0f -4.0 +5.0r -6.0 -f '
else
'sort -t~" +3.0f -4.0 +1.0f -2.0 -f'
I will eventually rewrite the report to store the data in a local table, but I can simply adjust the options to suit the requirments of linux. Basically, I need to know if this can be a quick fix for the short term.
using ubuntu and the corporate edition of open dns? >Im curious to find out how the anti malware filtering works in open dns works.

I use the TV + HDMI cable. Versions tested 32BITS/64BITS (stay with x64) has no disk error. already downloaded several times. MD5 is correct well ... I'll start here with my concerns ... version 9.04 onwards does not work gives blackscreen. I think "forgotten" by the generic drivers for ATI or something that influences the video. it does not show. 9.10,10.04,10.10 none of those versions worked ... on other computers functioned normally. I found researching how to dribble and go to live. and thus unable to install. but does not work after the pc restarts. Linux does not. shows nothing ... goes to black screen with the (- FLASHING) but nothing else happens.
I currently use Ubuntu with both lxde and KDE. I wish to install on a seperate partition a #!, the latest one, that is Debian-based. And I want them to share the same /home. Don't know if it's possible...

I have a dual-boot ubuntu-Windows XP computer, and today, while rummaging in the basement, found some Windows 3.1 floppies. My laptop has no floppy drive, but just to ask, can you intsall old OSs (Winows 3, Mac OS 7)on your PC to make it tri boot if you already have some modern operating systems? And I've seen that old Operating systems can be downloaded, so how do you install those?
