Nov 9, 2010
I need to build a master image and duplicate that image on 40 systems. What is the best way to do this? I was using dd but the image was made on a 2TB drive and the dd image was, well 2TB!How can I make an image of just the data and partition info?

I have been trying to create a windows 7 system image, for days, using standard win7 tools. I am officially giving up, in frustration. FWIW: I have gained an even deeper respect for Ubuntu, and even more contempt for Microsoft. My tools and setup:
Desktop:
AMD II Quad-core 64-bit, 3ghz, 4gb ram
1TB of disk space, less than 100GB used
Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit (I didn't like 11.04)
Laptop:
HP G62
Intel i3, dual-core, 3ghz, 4gb ram
500GB of disk space, less than 100GB used
Windows 7 Premier 64-bit
I have a few external HDDs: 640GB, 120GB, and an old 80GB. Also several thumb drives. The desktop, and laptop, are on the same network. Please just point me in the right direction. Do I use NTFSClone, or something else? Also, I would like to dual-boot the laptop with unbuntu, but if that's too difficult, never mind.

When playing dvd's, vob files and wmv files, the image comes with high contrast colors ,very intense red/green/blue. very dark too. I have vlc 1.1.4 installed, using ubuntu 10.10, libdvdcss2 installed. for the rest of the video formats it seems to work fine. any ideas on what should I start debugging?

I was given a forensic Image which I now know is a DD image of the drive (Vista) and am trying to mount the image or extract the image to another drive. I'm not sure of the extention type or if the image is a partition or the entire drive. I think it is the entire drive.
Is it possible to mount a DD image to a device. If I can't do that I just want to extract the files to run some programs against the drive. Can I view the files under Ubuntu or do I have to remove the drive and stick it into a Vista computer.
I purchased a second drive today and was hoping the command line would be something simple.
Or am I on the wrong track, should I be doing this all in a windows environment. The reason I picked ubuntu was because of the reporting tools.

I have just exported 3 png files out of gimp for a html document I'm working on right now, and they are all almost the same, except I need each to load when the user does something. So the first image will display on the page, and when a user puts their cursor over it, then it will load image 2. When they press it, it loads image 3.

I have a Canon iR3570/iR4570 PXL, and installed the driver CQue 1.0 TCP/IP Queue from Canon webpage.
The problem:
- if i try to print an OpenOffice or LibreOffice Calc with an image and text, the image is not printed (the space is blank).
- if i try to print an OpenOffice or LibreOffice Calc with just an image, it's printed great.
- if i try to print an OpenOffice or LibreOffice Impress, the images are not printed but the text is printed great.

WTF why is it with every update the devs try to break something. Might as well be using Ubuntu at this point and No I do not want to install Stable. Todays updqate would bring in linux-image-2.6.39-1-686-pae linux-image-686-pae, but my CPU Single core Intel Pentium M (-UP-) cache 1024 KB flags (sse sse2) bmips 1196.07 clocked at 600.00 MHz doesn't use PAE so it told me to remove linux-image-686 and to install linux-image-486. So more shiny crap that doesn't support older hardware, it is getting to be as bad as Microsoft.
Why don't I just go upgrade or buy new hardware with every new shiny crap that wants to upgrade. If it isn't broken do NOT fsck with it.

I wanted to know, I it is possible to synchronize two systems. Ive got one System on an ext. hard- drive, and one on a desktop computer. An example for better understanding:If I update on the ext. HD and I connect the ext. HD to the desktop, the desktop should be updated to. Or, when I create a new user on the desktop, and I connect the ext. hd, the user should get created to.Is this possible?

I dont know if my question is correct or not... but that is my way of understanding (it sounded different to me too Now my problem is. My ISP registers MAC address when connected to Internet. So if connect another system with a switch, Internet will be accessible by only one system (which registers first). I want both systems to work at a time!
What should I do?? Are there different methods of connecting? I searched google, but I could not frame a sentence to ask? It would be happy if it is either a command based or UI based. ++: How can I restrict the bandwidth usage of the second system??

I have a dual-boot ubuntu-Windows XP computer, and today, while rummaging in the basement, found some Windows 3.1 floppies. My laptop has no floppy drive, but just to ask, can you intsall old OSs (Winows 3, Mac OS 7)on your PC to make it tri boot if you already have some modern operating systems? And I've seen that old Operating systems can be downloaded, so how do you install those?

I have both windows XP home and Ubuntu 9.10 installed on my computer. I started with Ubuntu 8.04 (i think that was the number) and it has updated a few times since then. You see the thing is that when I choose an operating system at the boot up, it lists all of the updates to ubuntu. so there are like 12 options to choose from besides windows XP and Ubuntu 9.10.

This is a curiosity of mine, and I expect a technical answer, if someone knows it. Why the systems become so irresponsive when doing hard-disk input and output? This happens even if writing is done to a secondary disk where neither the system or the swap are stored.

I'm Dual Booting Ubuntu and Vista and i downloaded gparted today because i wanted to resize my operating systems so that Ubuntu had the majority of the hard drive. I was able to resize the vista part so that it was smaller, however i can't figure out how to resize the ubuntu half so that it takes up the unallocated part. I am currently in the process of changing over completely to ubuntu but i dont want to get rid of vista completely just yet.

Is it possible? (and probable?) I've successfully followed psychocats' tutorial on creating a separate home in ubuntu and noticed that it basically "only" needs fstab editing, so I wonder if could create the same home for two OSs (ubuntu and fedora). The only problem which comes to my mind is file/folder ownership but I'm not sure. and since I'm just a newbie, I think it'd be better if I consult to this forum first before messing up with OS.

I have 3 pc's on home network. All dual boot Windows and Ubuntu. All have Samba installed, plus personal file sharing. When all 3 are booted into linux, all 3 show the public folders on all 3 pc's, but only 2 can access the other pc's folders.
I can't find any difference between the systems to explain why one pc (10.04) cannot mount either of the other two public folders: Unable to mount location. DBus error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Message did not receive a reply (timeout by message bus)
even though their icons are shown in 'network'. The public folder on the troublesome pc can be accessed from the other two (10.04 & 10.10).

I am looking for recommendations on books and studying material for a person starting from zero and wanting to become a very competent user of Linux operating systems. From learning the very basic commands and use of the terminal to contributing to the development of a distro.
Can someone please suggest any books or authors that would be suited to start a program of this sort? (It would be preferable if they are available in hard copy format but e-books could also work)
I would also like to have an expert opinion on how much time you think it would take to get from novice to expert in the Linux world if devoting roughly thirty five hours a week. I intend to compile a step by step curriculum from personal experiences.

After an update recently I noticed that my process count jumped up quite a bit. Somehow it doesn't seem related (it was an apt update I believe), but I'll just throw it out there. All of the extra processes seem to be related to XFS and JFS file system kernel processes, but none of my file systems use XFS nor JFS, just EXT3 & EXT4. Is there any safe/easy way to kill off these processes and prevent them from re-spawning? I don't find having irrelevant idle processes to be beneficial nor efficient. It's using Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit. Only active file systems are EXT4 and EXT3.
