Ubuntu :: 10.10 - Keyboard Gets Messy When Connected To VPS
Feb 8, 2011
I'm new to linux. I bought a VPS of 123systems.net. I installed linux Ubuntun 10.10 on it. I followed this guide and installed Gnome and TighttVnc Server on it. The problem is when I connect to my VPS using VNC, the keyboard gets all messy. when I type minecraft it gets like %6gj&9[! , I cant use backspace, I use 5 instead. I tried to reinstall it 4 times. And rebooted my computer twice and tried to connect trough Real Vnc to it, but without any luck! Staff tried to connect to it trough VNC and had the same problem.
I have been battling this issues for about a year now. Kind of got tired of dealing with it, but inevitably I go away for vacation or something and I lose power at the fort then the system will not come back up on its own.
Every time (100%) I power my system on with the single USB cable connected to it, my system hangs. It did it on 8.x, 9.x and all versions of 10.x. I have asked the questions before, but never get anywhere with it. Finally I have found this Forum and figured out how to ask questions Weird, I know Anyway.
The system goes through the BIOS check and gets to the GRUB loader. If I do nothing, it hangs with a black screen just after it says that it is loading the kernel.
If I change the kernel commands to include the noacpi=apic or most other common fixes for what I have been told, USB, I get to the same place seemingly.
In reading through the forums and a little testing, I find that if I remove the splash and the quiet commands (obviously snicker), I am able to see where it is really stopping, but does not make sense to me.
The last informational text that appears to be processed is one of
Registered Protocol Family 1
There is nothing in the SYSLOG, MESSAGES or DMESG at all for this boot. I would assume that the system is not to a point where we can log this data

In debian/ubuntu I want to: a) Create a list of all the files in one directory tree b) Do the same for a second directory tree c) Compare the two lists such that, only the file NAMES are compared (i.e. just comparing the "file.txt" part so that "/home/folder/file.txt" == "/home/secondfolder/folder/file.txt) d) Output a list of all the duplicates How to do this using scripting languages or regex or something?
video playback is like I have applied a blueish sepia filter over it. And this is just the playback from totem player or mplayer, and not the playback from ..... (and generally online streaming) - this works just fine. this messy video playback also appears when I use cheese to capture video with my webcam. Note that the preview picture of the video file on nautilus has the natural colours it should have.
at first when I installed the os this particular problem didn't exist, but it came up the time I decided to follow the "comprehensive multimedia guide". So now I have all the pros of following the guide, but this is a major con...
I'm trying to set up a headless server. I installed squeeze, and everything seemed to be working fine, until I unplugged my keyboard. The next time I restarted, grub immediately dropped to the rescue prompt instead of automatically booting the first choice, like it should have. As soon I plug a keyboard in and reboot, everything works correctly.
Edit: I just reinstalled, and I'm getting new and exciting errors. Now, grub seems to work fine, but when I don't have a keyboard connected, the booting of the OS immediately fails. As soon as grub tries to boot the OS, it gives 5 consecutive "error: no such partition" messages followed by "Failed to boot both default and fallback entries."
Also, I have my root partition installed on a usb drive, and the keyboard is also usb. My other harddrives are three internal sata drives (/dev/sd[abc]). My usb usually mounts as /dev/sdd, but during the install it mounted as /dev/sde, since my usb installer was mounted at /dev/sdd. I've checked the /etc/fstab, and that seems to be mounting it based on the UUID, so I think that should be okay. I've noticed that in the /boot/grub/grub.cfg it lists my root as (hd4) everywhere though, when maybe it should be hd3?
Here is my grub.cfg.
# # DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE # # It is automatically generated by grub-mkconfig using templates # from /etc/grub.d and settings from /etc/default/grub
Computer: Toshiba Satellite Pro L510 laptop, 10.10.This has always happened but I have gotten around it by time-out and putting my menu.list in order. When I first boot the machine (switch on for the day from computer being off) I get to the grub options to select a kernel and I have no keyboard. No up/down arrows so have to go with the kernel on top of the list (not always desirable).
When I get to the log-in screen if I hit restart and go back to the grub screen I have a keyboard and can select any kernel. If I login to the kernel I have full keyboard, no problem. If I then restart, I have keyboard at the grub list.
Nutshell: It is only when starting the computer fresh that the keyboard is dead at grub menu (and then only). Any time after that, once the computer has been switched on, if I restart I have keyboard at grub menu and can select different kernels. (Of course, if I switch the computer off and back on again, no keyboard ...)
I want to set a up a network of inter connected pcs, for example on pc A linux is installed.now pcs B, C , D, etc should connect to A and do there work, for example A want to do C/C++, development, whereas B wants to do some PERL development or whatever, this is just an example, 2 different pc users might do same work also, and the connecting pcs may have Windows or linux or bsd.OSes now what h/w or s/w is required and what steps are required to set up this network, main pc would be connected to internet and also connected pcs might want to use internet also..have installed opensuse edulife , and use this as PC A for testing.. and I use bridged dsl Broadband connection to connect to internet , by the username and password provided by the ISP, in windows its easy to setup this connection, however not able to do on linux,
I'm a used Ubuntu user on a pc, and I like the french keyboard layout because it allows me to type accentued characters easily.I found a win-fr keyboard layout but it's much like windows and not so good.I found xmodmap.fr keyboard layout and I'd like to know if it was possible use it with my Mac SL 10.6.5, maybe I could do xmodmap xmodmap.fr or a way to convert to mac layout file.
Recently i have bought a Dell Inspiron n5010 laptop and installed ubuntu 10.10. I have a windows 7 installed as well. In windows Us English Table for IBM Arabic 238_L keyboard layout works for my pc. But, i can not find this layout in my ubuntu.
When I use the down arrow on my new keyboard it also does and enter key as well. When I use the left and right arrow keys and hold them it doesn't keep going. It just clicks once and I have to pressing it over and over again. Any one know the correct settings to setup my keyboard? It's a Logitech Illuminated Keyboard.
I have upgraded my laptop to 10.04 while having my usb-keyboard plugged in.f I boot the laptop without a plugged in keyboard, the laptop keyboard is not working. It starts working as soon as I plug a usb-keyboard in though.Quite annoying if I take my laptop with me and the first thing after booting is to find a usb-keyboard to plug in Does anyone know where can I reconfigure this? [edit]I just found out, that the laptop keyboar seems to be in numlock mode... meaning that the keys [j,k,l] is mapped to [1,2,3] etc
I've installed Ubuntu server edition 10.4 to one of my older computers and When I go to install something I get the error message Package could not be found. I'm assuming it's not connected to the internet. It doesn't Show up on my router. I'm trying to install Ubuntu-desktop using the code "sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop.
For the past few days now my mouse has automatically been scrolling when I am not trying to scroll anything (such as web pages, Word documents, etc).So I unplugged mouse and restarted. The same problem arises when mouse is not connected!
My name is Shim and currently im using Ubuntu 10.4 LTS well currently i've been facing an irritating problem it actually also happened in my previous ubuntu version, well the problem that i've been having is that my system doesn't detect any USBs or external HDs attached to it. I have check around already but still couldnt find any solution to this problem, but i noticed that in other forums they would post their results using the command "dmesg" well here is mine:
I installed ubuntu in my laptop. I cant able to use wifi in my laptop. Tell me how to configure the wifi in my laptop. My laptop model is aspiro 5378 (Acer).

WiFi on this laptop worked fine for a few months then went out; after a reinstall of ubuntu (since 9.xx had come out since then anyway) the wireless still refused to even see networks, let alone connect to them; under Wireless Networks in the NM, I just see a greyed out 'disconnected'. This got me to thinking that it may have just been a hardware issue, but I find that hard to believe. Anyway, here's the pertinent information:
Started off with an lshw command just to see if a network adapter is even listed as being connected: `lshw`
As an addendum : I found this driver project but they claim to require a 2.6.8+ kernel; a quick `uname -r` shows that mine is 2.6.31, and an `apt-cache search linux-image` reveals that to be the highest available from repos; do Debian/Ubuntu distros not use more recent kernels or is this an Ubuntu-specific kernel naming scheme? If so, to what would it be comparable? I'm hesitant to try to install this and change my firmware if it's likely I'll be borking something.
I seem to be having on going issues with my printer. I was able to print a garbled test page but I get a result from terminal of printer HP-Deskjet-f2400 now printing HP-Deskjet-f2400-0. enabled since Mon May 31 15:45:04 2010 Connecting to printer... and it just sits there. Nothing is in error with the printer itself though.

I installed OpenVPN, placed conf, keys and certs into /etc/openvpn/. I did Code: sudo openvpn --conf /etc/openvpn/client.conf And everything seemed alright, but when I actually try accessing something that I need VPN for, it doesn't work (it's the same as if I wasn't in VPN). I also tried using GOpenVPN but the results are exactly the same. I know the confs are ok as I use the exact same files on Windows 7 and everything's fine. I even disabled ufw, restated machine etc, just to be sure.
I am running Ubuntu 10.04 along with windows7.In Ubuntu, wired network worksWhen I connect to a wireless network, it connects but I am not able to connect to internet. It says, 'Wireless network connection 'blabla' active'
This is my second day with ubuntu on a dell mini 10v with broadcom wireless card. I hooked up to a wired connection and ubuntu installed the drivers for the broadcom card. When I put the cursor over the wireless icon on the desktop it shows the name of my wireless connection, active, and my ip address but when I open firefox I get a "server not found". I'm confused as what to put in the boxes for ssid, mode, bssid, mac address, and mtu under network connections. I've tried pretty much every conceivable method at my disposal, even went on my d-link router settings and nothing has worked.I do not have windows installed, using 10.4
