I'm new to Linux so I have no idea what I'm really doing. Anyways after the latest update about an hour or so ago, my computer insisted I restart. When I did, it just loads to a desktop (Wallpaper picture), a mouse pointer and nothing else. The little circle (Windows Hourglass Equal) keeps loading repeatedly on and off and I presume processing something in a loop. But it never loads to anything past that.
I've tried logging to recovery and followed a few procedures online suggested to help with linux boots such as
I've recently installed Oblivion with wine, but never ran it. Before that, I installed Imagescan! for Linux. Other than that, haven't installed anything.

I have a huge problem I can't move with. I bought an Asus N61JV laptop and put Ubuntu on it. There was a proprietry software (graphic card booster from nvidia) that asked me to restart the laptop afterwards. I did so, however, the laptop won't boot at all not. It doesn't respond to anyhing, I only hear it working. All I can do is turn it on and off. I'm getting desperate, I've had it for like 2 hours! Please help me, I'm almost crying. I'm not an experienced UNIX user and I totally don't know what to do. It boots until the point where I see Ubuntu writen and then the display like turns off. I can't even put windows there, it dosn't react to f9 or anyhing.

What can I do to correct the failure of the mount command to load the mem stick. In nautilus it reports that I do not have the permissions necessary to view the contents of "Kingston". In user settings there is only one user: Robin. The user privileges are showing as all ticked except for send and receive faxes, and use tape drives.
In the group for Robin there is only one member: Robin. Group id is 1000. There are a lot of groups available on the system. They all show Robin as unticked as a group member. To what groups should I make Robin be a member, without compromising security?

I am having problems with getting the drivers to work for a geforce 9500gt.To get started Im working with a fresh install of 8.10, and I have successfully installed the driver package for this card from nvidia's site, version 260.The problem comes after I restart the computer. It fails to load. I am able to install the driver and start X and it works greatI can even restart x and it still works. but as soon as I restart the computer it doesn't load. I then need to reinstall the driver. I am curious if anyone has an idea of whats wrong here? I am wondering if it's a possible xorg.conf problem so I will post that below.
xorg.conf file
Section "ServerLayout"
Identifier "Layout0"

I tried to do a clean install of 10.04 on the above desktop. It was previously running 9.10 fine.
I booted with a 10.04 live CD, used Gparted to delete the previous partition that 9.10 was in. Installed 10.04 and chose the option to install in the largest continuous free disc space.
The installation seemed to go fine, but when I re-start the system, GRUB loads, I select Linux, then I get a flashing cursor and the monitor goes to sleep as it shows like it is getting no signal.
When I boot Vista on the same system it works fine.
From the sound of the hard drive, I am guessing that it is not loading the Ubuntu OS, I don't think this is a video driver problem.

I need to load php module without restart/reload apache, is there a way to do that, php has its option to load zend extension using '-z',
php -z <filename>
is there anyway because I need to load php module in runtime, that I don't want to loose the live running session.

I have just finished the upgrade of the latest version and I'm at the point of my system restating.
My system automatically tried to restart but on the restart I got the 'terminal' view. It stopped when asking for my username (it never normally asks for this before the grub menu) and then password. I didn't get any further than that.
I now have on my screen (still in the terminal view before the grub menu)
"name@name-desktop:...$ "
I'm on my phone now so I don't actually have the symbol for before the dollar sign but your know what it is. The raised S on a 90 degree angle.

I have a suspend problem in my laptop. Sometimes, when resuming from suspend, the network adapter is down (that is, the network does not work and the light of the network adapter is off). Restarting the network service doesn't work, because I think that the system forgot about the hardware, and probably the driver should be reloaded.Does anyone knows how to do that?(ps. /etc/init.d/networking restart does not work, because the hardware driver is not being recognized anymore).

Whenever I choose "Restart" from the GDM screen, GDM appears to shutdown, and the first TTY is displayed with a login prompt at the bottom (assuming I haven't used that TTY). I am by no estimation a patient individual, but I waited a solid minute or two for something to happen, but nothing ever did. I end up logging in as root on that TTY and running "shutdown -r now" to get the job done. This is a shared computer, and ideally any user should be able to perform shutdown options graphically from GDM.The only mentioned workaround doesn't apply to me as I am using the nvidia driver, not intel.

When i open one of the web browsers i use and try to load a web site it's taking to long to respond and sometimes it doesnt load the website at all. I have tried with firefox, epiphany, opera with all the same results. I am sure that this is not a problem with my internet connection because i don't have these problems with windows. Also the network manager connection settings are correct
I also tried choosing the old kernel(2.6.32.24) to boot from but no success. The problem is the same as if i am using the 2.6.32.25 kernel. The strange thing is that i can download packages from synaptic with full speed. Last think.I have recently downloaded the recommended updates from the update manager but i don't remember what are the things that where updated.

I'm trying to install Ubuntu (9.10) on my sisters computer. I have installed ubuntu 9.10, but when I try to boot it from hard drive, it would stop loading a bit after the logo appears. The screen would turn off while the system is still running. Live version of Ubuntu works after reports of errors. I tried to search for the problem all over the forum, and could not find a good lead to figure out the problem.
So far to figure out the problem, I verified if cd is corrupted. No issues there. Googled the problem, and seems like other users were able to install 7.04 (old posts).
Its so weird though that live version works and the installed version does not.
Here are my specs:
I can post logs, but I'm not sure which one is useful as I'm relatively new to this process.

I had Fedora 7 and Windows Vista dual booting on my computer. I just installed Fedora 10. When the live CD asked me where to install it, I chose "Remove all Linux Partitions and create default layout" The installation went perfectly, but now when reboot my computer, it boots directly into Fedora; GRUB does not load to ask me which OS I want to load. I know I did not overwrite Vista because I can still view my Vista files through Fedora. Here is my grub.conf file:

What do I need to do to make GRUB load again upon booting?

I noticed my Firefox loading rather slow (took around 5 - 7 seconds to load and navigate pages, even google, and it would sometimes become unresponsive), I thought it may have been a addon problem, so I opened up a new Firefox profile with no addons but the browser crashed upon loading the certain page I was trying to view, and I figured I'd look into it later and use Chromium for a while (I'll be open, I was trying to watch an pron tube site, and when your, you know, you don't really feel like stopping to go technical and try to fix it or whatever), but Chromium said that the flash player wasn't installed. I thought it was kinda odd, but then again I didn't want to go technical and thought maybe since mozilla firefoxs engine loaded the flash, I'd use Mozilla Seamonkey which uses the same gecko engine. The flash wasn't working either on there.
I tried looking up to see if there was a 64bit deb package for flash, but they didn't have it, and I seen someone mention that doing the 'apt-get upgrade' upgrades it, so I did that, and it also said it installed some extra packages when doing it, but I figured it was just that getlibs grabbing the extra dependencies and went along with installing them (after all there shouldnt be much to lose since its from the repository, right?)
I restarted the computer to give the updates a chance to take effect (it didn't mention to restart, but I thought I'd go ahead and do it anyways to ensure it updated okay).
This is where the booting problem comes in: When my laptop restarted, the loading was going across very slowly (I have ubuntu studio installed through regular ubuntu, so it was showing the text filling up), normally it would just fill a little bit of the first "U" in "Ubuntu Studio" and then be done quickly, but now it goes slowly all the way, and when it fills "Ubuntu Studio", it stills stays there, it doesn't load on.
I pressed the down button to see the terminal and it says this:
Code:
I have no clue what to do now, and I wanted to ask for help before I go trying myself editing the command line boot process.

I reinstalled fedora the other day, and it's been working just fine, apart from the internet. It shows that I have a full connection with the wireless network, but it's really difficult to actually load a page. 80% of the time it just fails and shows "Page Load Error". It's really frustrating because it is connected to the internet. In fact, the icon in the address bar even loads from the site I try to access, but websites just will not load.
I've tested my wireless internet with another laptop which is running vista, and it works perfectly on that. Also, I'm running Fedora 10 on an Acer Extensa laptop.

I want to load grub2 from grub4dos.I want to load directly the grub2 core. I know how to load first 512 bytes from some patition by chainloader and load grub2, but what I need is to load directly grub2 core without passing by bootstriping code (first 512 bytes). So, my first boot manager is grub4dos, then I can load grub2 and later I load Ubuntu. But I think I have to edit --set-root
What I dont know is how.
In hdd 0,7 (sda8) I have Ubuntu 10.10 and /boot/grub/core.img is in sda8 (hd0.7)
I tried this way:
Code:
title grub2
find --set-root /boot/grub/core.img
kernel /boot/grub/core.img

I dual boot XP and FC14 and have 2 routers. I can connect and ping one of these routers when I'm in FC and I have an IP address I just can't load any websites. When I connect to the other router (my main router) it works fine. When I boot into XP and connect to the problem router I can load pages fine. It's only when I'm on FC14 and connect to the problem router that I can't load pages even though I have an IP and can ping around.

I have two sources.list file. A sources.list.proxy and a sources.list.noproxy, the first of wich points to apt-cacher on my home server and the other wich points directly to the regular repo's.I have wicd run a script when i connect and disconect from my home network. One of the tasks being cp sources.list.proxy sources.list on connect and sources.list.noproxy sources.list on disconnect. However the repo's apt-get uses does not change until i restart my machine, clearly not a good solution. Is there a way of just restarting apt?

Does anyone know how I can restart gnome from the command line without having to log in again(as in selecting a user and typing in the password)? I've tried using '/etc/init.d/gdm restart' and that tells me to use 'service gdm restart' but that forces me to log back in again.I wouldn't mind having to start gnome using startx, then logout of x and startx again but I need to automate the process. I can't figure it out because anything I launch withing gnome gets killed when gnome goes down so that the startx part doesn't get executed

I'm having problems trying to restart gdm from crontab and I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. Basically what I want to do is a 'logout' every morning before I get to work so that by the time I get to my computer I would just have to log back in and have a fresh gnome session.
The command I'm using to restart gdm is:
Code:
/usr/sbin/service gdm restart
If I run this command from a terminal as root it works.
To edit my crontab file I'm doing:
Code:
sudo crontab -u root -e
And adding the following line to it:
Code:
25 08 * * 1-5 /usr/sbin/service gdm restart
My understanding is that this should restart gdm every day of the work week (Mon-Fri) at 08:25. But for some reason this is not happening.
I also checked that my cron deamon is running by:
Code:
~$ service gdm status
gdm start/running, process 27156

This is a new installation of Ubuntu, everything was working great after installing the programs and configuring settings until a system restart brought these errors down:It cannot connect to the internet, I've tried everything even restarting the network with the terminalThe windows do not have borders, I know this is a common problem but I've read through many different posts and nothing helps, this all happened at the exact same time and was working perfectly beforeWhen you logoff, shutdown, or end your session in any way it says there is an unknown program that won't quit, you have to end it because it will never end on it's own.I've restarted many times in the past but all this suddenly happens randomly, I have Ubuntu 10.10 32-bit and CompizFusion if that makes a difference.
