I have this broken package nvidia-kernel-common, I don't have Nvidia HW andI'm using ATI.
I tried to remove/purge/install this package since I saw it was broken but without any help.

Todays update broke my display again. The windows are hanging off the left side of the screen.
Nvidia current correctly configured 1920x1080, xorg.conf seems ok too.
System - Administration - Additional Drivers shows nvidia current, but mentions that the driver is activated but not currently in use
How can I get Ubuntu to use this driver?
xserver-common (2:1.10.4-1) was upgrade today in Sid to xserver-common (2:1.11.0-1) breaking my nvidia driver (NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-280.13.run). There is a temporary fix as showen below.

I have installed php 5.3.6-4 on centOS 5.6. When i try to install some modules of php then it gives an error

I spent quite a lot of time jumping from one thread to another trying to fix a problem with my NVIDIA drivers in Lucid. I was getting the error message on startup: NVIDIA: Failed to load the NVIDIA kernel module ...Failed to load module "nvidia" (module-specific error, 0) No drivers available".
After a lot of trial and error, this is what worked for me (I have updated this thread following [URL]):
- Download the latest NVIDIA driver from www.nvidia.com/page/drivers.html
- In the terminal cd to the directory where you downloaded the driver package (e.g., $ cd Downloads)and make it executable (e.g., $ sudo chmod +x ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-256.53.run)
- Edit blacklist.conf $ gksu gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
and add the following lines to the end of the file:

blacklist vga16fb
blacklist nouveau
blacklist rivafb

I updated kernel and everything seemed ok, except HD-PVR is locking up and recording only two minutes of every show it records. So, I have gone back to my previous kernel, but it seems that X isn't starting:

Fatal server error:no screens found I had done a yum install kmod-nvidia for the newer kernel. I am thinking I need to get the kmod for the current kernel again (2.6.32.12-115.fc12.x86_64 #1 SMP Fri Apr 30 19:46:25 UTC 2010 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux), but am not sure how that is done?
9.04 this morning updated my kernel to I believe it is 2.6.28.18 and upon the reboot I had no desktop. It booted wanting to go into low graphics.
So I drop to shell and stop the gdm and try to run the latest nvidia run file I have and it hangs saying I have a x server running.
Otherwise I am needing assistance with getting my desktop back! I can boot into an older kernel and if need be I would like to roll back that latest update this morning, but once again I am forgetting the command line for that.

my problem is on installing nvidia driver on fc12 32bit but, first of all, as i understood the pae kernel requires more than 4gb of ram,i have a 2.2 ghz cpu with 2 gb ram,but when i run command:uname -r it answers: 2.6.31.5-127.PAE [i have fc12 32 bit] when we try to download linux we have a 32bit edition or 64bit edition,do we have an edition which is only for pae? or when we install for example the 32bit edition on a computer with more than 4gb of ram then the kernel automatically will change to be a pae kernel??

So basically it seems like by installing grub-doc, I have uninstalled grub totally (yes, it is still there as the bootloader, but i have no way of updating it now!) from my system. What's the conflict between grub-doc and grub-pc, such that grub-pc has to be removed?

in the terminal. However, this barely helped me.
I've heard it's a problem Docky has with nVidia drivers, which I use.
Does anyone have a solution? Docky is so slow it is essentially unusable at this point. Cairo dock seems too glitchy, so I guess it's back to AWN.
Running 10.10. My graphics card has just blown up so I've had to switch to the motherboard internal graphics. Problem is, Ubuntu doesn't like it - I have to start in recovery mode and 'low graphics for this sesion'. How do I remove all 'knowledge' of Nvidia and then let Ubuntu configure itself for my new(!) graphics capability?

Prior to attempting my install I did install the kernel-devel rpm so it can compile. after running the RPM I get. I decided to keep nvidia's privates drives on giving up any hope to fix the plymouth bug and, right now, i would like to optimize or configurate the drivers properly like it is on Mandriva One 2010.
Perhaps someone is not exactly understand what i want to say. Well, i was using Mandriva One 2010 before installing Ubuntu Maverick and i have noticed there was no a low latency, lag effect, low performance or a lack of initial smooth and clean windows moves in Mandriva One 2010 but on Ubuntu there is.
This is very hard to explain for me, for example, If i use the "flip windows selector" (i mean, pressing "<Super>+Tab" keys) show me this effect too slow initially but if i forced the GPU for a while (repeating and pressing the keys), the lag effects vanished and then, the flip windows selector works nicely fast, clean and smooth. Now if i stop to use that effects, let the Nvidia GPU repose a while and use again the flip windows selector again, the lag effects come up again.
This fact does not just happen using the "flip windows selectos", any effects which minimize, resize or maxime the windows generate that annoying initial lag effects, for example, a simple minimize windows:
I am in despair with this, i do not if i have to do some change in the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file, what i have to configurate in the "Nvidia X server Settings" or in the "compiz manager settings" application.
Anyone knows a tutorial about how to optimize the Nvidia drivers on Ubuntu? or the Compiz effects to reduce the lag effets?

I'm having issues with the current kernel is lucid ..Is it safe to issue "apt-get remove 2.6.32-29-server" to remove the current kernel ? Will aptitude automatically configure grub2 to boot on the previous kernel ?
View 2 Replies View Relatedi have 3 kernels on my ubuntu 10.10 (2.6.35-22; 2.6.35-23; 2.6.35-24). i tried to remove the oldest kernel 2.6.35-22 through synaptic manager, but it says that the kernel is not installed on the system. in fact, all the kernels i have on my system were shown as not installed. when i right-click it highlights only 'mark for installation'. so i tried to remove it from the terminal using the command:
sudo apt-get remove linux-headers-2.6.20-15 linux-headers-2.6.20-15-generic linux-image-2.6.20-15-generic --purge
it processes and show that it has been deleted. then i typed:
sudo update-grub2
it showed the grub2 without the deleted kernel. then i restarted, but it was still there. then i logged into the latest kernel (2.6.35-24) and typed:
sudo update-grub
it showed everything including the deleted kernel. then i typed:
sudo update-grub2
and it now showed everything, including the deleted kernel. i thought it was a problem with grub showing deleted entries, so i tried to boot the deleted kernel (2.6.35-22) and surprisingly it booted very well, no hicks or slows. i rebooted into the latest kernel and then tried to re-run the kernel delete command via the terminal, but it said that the old kernel (2.6.35-22) is not installed.
i don't know what's wrong. how do i delete the 2.6.35-22 kernel and update my grub/grub 2?
***besides, my grub is stil GRUB 1.xx version. but how come i still have / can run grub and grub2 on my system? and is also can update both grubs?
The driver has crashed X and before I had a chance to find RPMfusion instructions on dealing with initrd, I removed the package just to keep X running.Uninstalling the package does not restore kernel and Xorg operation. I am still in VESA mode.Although they claim they don't put stuff in non-standard places and use RPM, still there is something left over, as nuoveau driver no longer loads.Now that system configuration is all over the place, it is not clear what they actually changed or replaced.
View 3 Replies View RelatedThis is a followup/secondary question from another post earlier this morning.[URL].. Info: Lucid 10.04, 4GB ram, Nvidia video, home built pc. I'm fairly certain that when I enable the pae kernel this time, I'll get usage of the full 4GB of memory that I have installed.
The problem is, that I did enable the pae kernel earlier this week to test something out, but ran into a problem. It came up in "low graphics mode" (800x600). As you can image, I wasn't real thrilled about that.
I went to System->Administration->Hardware Drivers to get the video driver straightened out. I figured it just needed one compiled for the pae kernel... Well, it didn't find one. Is there one? Is there a procedure to get one installed/compiled, if there isn't one?
I don't know if I want to mess with trying to get the Nvidia drivers working for pae, when I only stand to gain another ~700MB of memory. Currently showing 3.2GB. I'm not sure if its worth my trouble..
I installed 2.6.34 and no longer need 2.6.32-21. When I go into the package manager and mark it for removal...It looks like it tries to install 2.6.32-22 and 2.6.32-22 Generic and then upgrade Linux-headers-generic.

I installed Mint 9 and directly after installation there were updates to download and install, which I did. One of the updates is a newer kernel, 2.6.32-24-generic.
When I manually install the nVidia driver 256.44 and restart gdm it works. When I reboot I land in low resolution, have to remove and re-install the older (195.36) driver through "Hardware Drivers". Somehow the new kernel and the latest nVidia don't match together. Am I the only one suffering from this or are there more people with this problem,and what to do about it?
I am running Ubuntu 10.04 and ran the normal weekly updates last night. There were kernal updates listed but they have run alright before so I went ahead and let everything update.
On restart my Nvidia drivers would not load, so I restarted in low graphics mode. I uninstalled the Nvidia driver (with the intent of reinstalling them) but decided to restart before I reinstalled the driver (windows habit). upon restart I was told (in a very small box) that Ubuntu was running in low graphics mode.
I clicked ok and it proceeded to load, but it loaded it in regular mode and only the right half of the desktop is visible! It is like it is cut totally in half! And I can't get to the important side with Admin and Preferences. I tried boot options but that just gets me a very small colored box. There are no options when it boots just 3/4 of a box that says it is running in low graphics mode because "unable to load module "fglrx" module does not exist". I can not try and reinstall the Nvidia drivers because I can't see the part of the desktop that has Admin on it. I have used Ubuntu for several years now but have not used the terminal very often.
