Ubuntu :: 10.04 Can't Open Software Sources Repositories Manager

Nov 2, 2010

I am running Ubuntu 10.04 GNOME. Today I wanted to add a new repository. I tried to open the repositories manager (Software Sources) through Synaptic, but nothing happened. Then I tried to open it directly by directly clicking on the Software Sources program in the system menu, but still it wouldn't open.

Debian :: Synaptic - Software Sources Will Not Show Repositories

Nov 27, 2010

I recently installed Debian Squeeze and trying to get all the goodies installed I had in Lenny. Synaptic, software sources and software center now fails to display and allow selecting from /etc/apt/source.list. When using Synaptic and I chose "Settings" then "Repositories" I now get a message "repositories changed, click reload button" when I do it just reloads and displays downloading 34 packages as it has since first install. Normally I would get a window where I can select or deselct sources from /etc/apt/sources.list, I also recollect it asked me to insert the DVD I installed the OS from but it does not do this now as well.

When opening "software sources" it prompts for root or allows if I have prevoiusly used root but just stalls and then quits. When using "Software Center" and selecting "Edit" then ""Software Sources" I get same results. I verified sources.list exists, backed it up and made a few changes to it and still no results. This most likely has happened since I used smxi to install nvidia driver shortly after install. Installing the debian modual driver suplied would not work. I have since tried installing GoogleEarth same way I did with Lenny without results. I also used smxi with report it would not build. Anything simple like Users and groups I have yet to configure properly that would cause this? I have yet to make any changes except add 2 users.

Ubuntu Installation :: Update Manager / Software Sources / Synaptic Package Manager Not Working?

Sep 30, 2010

It started with Update Manager constantly recycling and not updating. When it starts it shows 295 files and 308MB waiting to download. When I click on 'Install Updates' it appears to go through the process, and then presents me with the same 'waiting to install' window again - and again, and again - in fact as many times as I care to click the 'Install Updates' button. No error messages appear. The 'Settings' button produces the same apparent process as the 'Install Updates' button, but doesn't present me with any other screen.

I've tried all the solutions I could find on these forums and nothing works. The sudo suggestions for Terminal usually produce error codes. adjusting a line in the 'hosts' file. When I tried this I was presented with the obstacle of not having access to the read-only file, and no matter how much I searched I couldn't find how to gain access . While investigating all these possible solutions, I was directed in turn to the Software Sources and Synaptic Package Manager applications, but when I attempted to start them, 'Starting Administrative Application' appeared briefly on the taskbar - and then disappeared!

Ubuntu :: Open "synaptic Package Manager," "root Terminal," "software Sources," Or "firewall Configuration"?

Jun 5, 2010

I have ubuntu 10.04. The installation is about 3 days old. My account type is administrator. When I try to open "synaptic package manager," "root terminal," "software sources," or "firewall configuration" the window list on the panel on the bottom of the screen informs me "starting administrativ..." and then vanishes without fanfare. Clearly it would seem these programs are all dependent on something I managed to screw up.The question then is; what is it, and how can I fix it? Also note: everything works fine on the root account.

Ubuntu :: Update Manager Unable To Check Repositories

Oct 1, 2010

I have just re-installed Ubuntu 10.04. -The installation went smoothly, completing in approximately 25-30 minutes. All of my hardware, including keyboard, mouse, monitor and network interface has been detected and works properly. I am currently using the machine to type this. I can browse the web using Mozilla Firefox. My network connection does not start and stop; the machine remains connected with no indication that there is a fault with the NIC, and so on. I am able to download files at 150-170kB/s as is normal for me with Firefox.

I have not yet installed a graphical user interface to configure the firewall. I have not in any way worked with any system files. I am using the same hardware that I have used for approximately one year before this with no incident. I first encountered this with my previous install at approximately 3:00 AM (local time,) when I manually started Update Manager and attempted to check for updates in the default repositories. I have not altered the repository list in either the previous install or this new install. The Update Manager is entirely default.

Upon checking for updates, the list of repositories hangs after I believe at least ten lists have been checked. All of the lists checked before this hangup read "0 B" in the downloaded section of the window. It appears that upon checking for updates, no actual data is transferred to my computer. Again, after going through several of the default repo lists, the entire process halts. A wait of approximately ten minutes still reads that the process has not continued. -During this time I am able to browse the web using Firefox, and the OS seems to be responsive and otherwise functional. There is not a slow response from the keyboard or mouse, there are also no graphics glitches. Again, this problem first occurred with my previous install of Ubuntu 10.04, which was up-to-date as of approximately midnight last night. I have reinstalled the OS and the problem persists. The symptoms of this problem are consistent between my previous install and the reinstall.

Ubuntu Installation :: Update Manager Failed To Fetch Sources?

Jan 4, 2010

I'm running 9.04 and trying to use the update manager. On checking for updates, I get the error message:W: Failed to fetch http://mirror.uoregon.edu/ubuntu/arc...ty/Release.gpg Could not connect to 69.219.142.196:21 (69.219.142.196). - connect (111 Connection refused)W: Failed to fetch http://mirror.uoregon.edu/ubuntu/arc...tion-en_US.bz2 Could not connect to 69.219.142.196:21 (69.219.142.196). - connect (111 Connection refused)(more...)This used to work, but now it doesn't. I tried selecting all kinds of different sources in the "Software Sources" GUI. And this seemed to change my /etc/sources.list accordingly. But, whatever the hostname given (above mirror.uoregon...), that same IP address is shown 69.219.... huh? I can browse the web, etc fine from this computer

Ubuntu Installation :: Software Sources And Synaptic Package Manager Won't Run

Oct 1, 2010

Whenever I try to run the Software Sources and Synaptic Package Manager applications, 'Starting Administrative Application' appears briefly on the taskbar - and then disappears! And nothing starts.I tried uninstalling and reinstalling them in case they were corrupt, but the same thing still happens. These two seem to be the only applications that behave this way, so can anyone think of anything that links the two of them and may cause this?

I am meeting some problems on my opensuse 11.2 system in the last week, I see an higher load on CPU and the system seems to swap a lot of time. Checking on dmesg I found that at boot time I have a lot of errors: I paste a little part of the full log at the end of this post

Debian :: PACKAGE MANAGER Crash - Stuck - Dead - How To Reset Or Clear Repositories

May 15, 2011

The package manager is scrambled in my Ubuntu 11.04. It started with the repositories list being scrambled with multiple entries. Now when the Package Manager is launched it just accesses the hard drive forever. I did give it a half an hour just in case so it clearly stuck in a loop of some kind.

What I'd like to know is: Is there some way to reset, clear, turn off or de-select the added Repositories list from the command line (terminal.) This seems to be the only way since the Package Manager gets stuck. Keep in mind that I'm only slightly competent with Linux and have no idea where the Debian Package Manager data is located or how it works. If I go poking around without at least some guidance I may make things worse.

The problem seems to be spreading. Got stuck again while saving this message. Turned off the system, rebooted to recovery mode and did a file system check. Okay for now. Switching to clean OS on other partition.

I'll check for answers there but it's only Ubuntu 10.04 and I'd very much prefer to have 11.04 working and not have an effectively dead partition and don't want to loose everything on it with a re-format and 2 day re-install process (no installation disk.)

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Update Http://ppa.launchpad.net Natty/main/Sources Sources

May 16, 2011

I've got the following problem: I just noticed that there were just very few notifications about updating the system (usually there are damn many of them in a week) So I opened the update manager and clicked on "refresh list". The following result popped up: p,li{white-space:pre-wrap;}E: Error http://ppa.launchpad.net natty/main/Sources Sources 404 Not Found First I thought, it would be just some kind of server problem, but it didn't stop. The next thing was to research the thread and I even found something. However, the solution suggested didn't work at all. (Things, which might have caused this: I installed the default software center |I'm using Kubuntu, but in this case that fact doesn't matter| and used it. To sum up:

- not able to update the system referring to the launchpad main sources for 11.04
- following error: E: Error http://ppa.launchpad.net natty/main/Sources Sources 404 Not Found It would be great if this was a common issue and I've been simply too stupid to find a proper solution. So you could just post the link.

Ubuntu Installation :: Change The Sources That Aren't In Sources.list?

Apr 21, 2010

I am running Jolicloud on my netbook (which I believe is an Ubuntu derivative) and I am tried to enter the getdeb.net sources in so I can install apps from the website through APT but

1) When I entered the sources into sources.list and then the key into Terminal and then went to the site and tried to install an app it didn't work.

2) I deleted the line of code in the sources.list file and when I opened terminal and entered "sudo apt-get update" it showed the list of sources, but on the list were Getdeb.net sources.

My question is how do I delete sources that aren't in /etc/apt/sources.list ?

Could not download all repository indexes
The repository may no longer be available or could not be contacted because of network problems. If available an older version of the failed index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored. Check your network connection and ensure the repository address in the preferences is correct.

i can get on the internet fine but the update manager has not worked for 12 days code...
