Jan 2, 2010I just installed Ubuntu 9.10 and at some point I realised that the Update manager application will not open when I click on it the hard drive spin a little but nothing happens.I realized that the Software sources et Hardware drivers apps are in the same states. I was not able to see after what operation/installation I did that I they stop working.I am a beginner with Linux, and I feel that if I reinstall I will fall into the same hole .

May 16, 2011I've got the following problem: I just noticed that there were just very few notifications about updating the system (usually there are damn many of them in a week) So I opened the update manager and clicked on "refresh list". The following result popped up: p,li{white-space:pre-wrap;}E: Error http://ppa.launchpad.net natty/main/Sources Sources 404 Not Found First I thought, it would be just some kind of server problem, but it didn't stop. The next thing was to research the thread and I even found something. However, the solution suggested didn't work at all. (Things, which might have caused this: I installed the default software center |I'm using Kubuntu, but in this case that fact doesn't matter| and used it. To sum up:
- not able to update the system referring to the launchpad main sources for 11.04
- following error: E: Error http://ppa.launchpad.net natty/main/Sources Sources 404 Not Found It would be great if this was a common issue and I've been simply too stupid to find a proper solution. So you could just post the link.
Fedora Security :: Cannot Open /var/db/sudo After Sudo Package Upgrade?
Sep 16, 2010A day ago I finally got around to upgrading the PackageKit installation that had been sitting for a week and a half, so I found a new upgrade for sudo available - the one that gives the sudoreplay command, I forget which version number it is exactly. When I try to use the sudo command I get this notice in my terminal:Code:Can't open /var/db/sudo/me/1: Permission deniedI didn't get it before. What do I have to do to make it open? I'm using SELinux in enforcing mode if that helps.

and now i can't get root access to anything. If I try executing a sudo command i get:

Mar 12, 2010I tried to change the basic toolbar to cairo dock,a tutorial that i found told me to write in terminal gksu gedit /etc/apt/sources.list.d/winehq.listso i write it and a window opened,i couled not find the text that told me(the tutorial i mean)so i closed the window,after that i keep taiking the same error

Jun 1, 2010I am from India, and I tried to update my Ubuntu system today. Code: $sudo apt-get update The update failed because the connection to the India mirror timed out: Code: [URL] Could not connect to in.archive.ubuntu.com:80 (111.91.91.37). - connect (110: Connection timed out) I tried the update a few times, with the same result every time.
I had firestarter running at this time, and noticed that I would get new security events every time I tried an update. I checked the events list, and it turned out that the machine at the ip address 111.91.91.37 (the in.archive.ubuntu.com machine, to go by the above error message) had been trying to make connections to seemingly random ports on the machine every time I tried the update: see the attached screenshot. I then changed my repositories to the Main Server using Synaptic, and tried the update again (from the command-line). This time it worked without a hitch, and firestarter did not report any unwanted incoming connection. why is the India mirror trying to open connections that the Main server apparently does not need in order for me to do the update? Should I (we) be concerned?

I take it these are installed from main component right?Is this just to let people know there's a new version in main? If you didn't have "deb http://security.debian.org/ distrib/updates main", wouldn't the updates be pulled from "deb http://whatever/debian distrib main" anyway when you did an apt-get update (by logical reasoning that they'd be new?)
Or is it that you can't detect new versions directly from main and you need the updates package to point out which ones have updated versions?

1) When I entered the sources into sources.list and then the key into Terminal and then went to the site and tried to install an app it didn't work.
2) I deleted the line of code in the sources.list file and when I opened terminal and entered "sudo apt-get update" it showed the list of sources, but on the list were Getdeb.net sources.
My question is how do I delete sources that aren't in /etc/apt/sources.list ?
