when i tried to open my software management(repositories) in YaST i saw a pop up window it says PackageKit is still running(probably busy)Ask PackageKit to quite again.i can't quit that.i tried to quit it via system activity.Because of this i can't open software management(repositories).it is also not working.how to quit PackageKit?

I might switch to OpenSUSE from Debian, but I have my doubts still about package management with OpenSUSE. I'm glad to see that zypper now has the --clean-deps option. Is there a YAST GUI for this as well? I don't like the command line very much. Additionally, is there any way to remove a package with all its config files? In Debian with the Synaptic front end, you can right click on package and click "remove" and it will just uninstall the package but leave its configuration files intact.
But if you select "Completely Remove" it will remove all the configuration files so that if you later install the package again it will use the default settings once again. Is there any way to do this with OpenSUSE? Again, I'd prefer a GUI. Does 11.3 offer Delta RPM updates, and are there many repos that offer delta RPMs? Does Zypper cache downloaded packages by default? And using the YAST package management GUI are packages caches by default? If so, where? Does the YAST GUI try to refresh the package cache all the time, or can I do it manually?
ISTR seeing that
% zypper up -t package
was the equivalent of
YaST | Software Management | Packages | All Packages | Update if new version
available
(without SuSEconfig of course) is this the case, if not, what is the equivalent zypper command?
I am new to OPEN SUSE. I installed 11.4 without any problems. It is working fine. I did Multimedia install with oneclick option. All the updates were done. Today while going thru forums FAQ, I saw repositories list and their priorities. When I checked my repositories in YAST, there was no PACKMAN so added the PACKMAN repository. I noticed in Software Manager there is Upgrades OpenSuse-release 11.4-1.8 - 11.4-1.9! What does this mean?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI did zypper dup to move from 11.3 to 11.4. Almost everything works fine. But when I try to add community repositories I get the 11.3 repositories, not the 11.4 repositories. So there must be a .conf or .rc file somewhere telling yast that we're on 11.3 when in fact we are on 11.4. How/where can I change that? And while we're at it, how do I load a Factory repository? They do not appear in the list of Community" repositories.

I tried to add another repository to yast (Index of /repositories/mozilla/openSUSE_11.2) and when I was done, Yast gave me an error message and now no repositories show up.
The error is: "/etc/zypp/repos.d/_mozilla_openSUSE_11.2.repo:Line 2 is missing '=' sign"
How do I fix this? How do I get my repos back? I took a look in that directory and this is what is in it:

Annoying problems I have with Yast2 Software Management?
1. Sometimes when starting Yast2 Software Management it fails to connect to the SW repositories. It happens inevitably (i.e. without exception) at the first attempt after a fresh boot up, and sometimes otherwise. I can only retry or abort, and retrying usually brings no success anyway. Is it perhaps due to a time-out somewhere?
2. If I click on the 'abort' button (see above) or 'cancel' in Yast otherwise, I inevitably (i.e. without exception) get the following type of error message

I am running OpenSuse 11.3 with Gnome.
I am meeting some problems on my opensuse 11.2 system in the last week, I see an higher load on CPU and the system seems to swap a lot of time. Checking on dmesg I found that at boot time I have a lot of errors: I paste a little part of the full log at the end of this post

I hope this is the right forum in which to post this but I am currently running SUSE 11.2(I know im a couple versions back, its a long story but this box has been in storage for awhile) but the problem I am having is with updating SUSE and accessing the repositories through the Yast Software Installer. When I open it I get several variations of this message:

I just want to change the text displayed on bootup from "Desktop - opensuse - lotsaversion numbers" to "OpenSUSE 11.3".I tried doing it during installation, but it didn't seem to take affect, and now it won't let me do it through Yast

View 1 Replies View RelatedAfter a disastrous foray into LDAP I restored NIS on a very simple network run by a very simple operator. Everything now works except for YaST on the NIS master. I can't manage NIS users in YaST any more. The option 'show NIS users' is now absent from the 'filter' button up in YaST "User and Group Management" So, after following the YaST route to LDAP there seems no way back...
These are OpenSUSE 11.3 boxes and the slave NIS server can't [obviously enough] delete expired NIS users on the master, although it sees them fine. Disabling or changing NIS server or client on the Master simply restores the 'wrong' settings - nothing is erased or cleaned. How do I clean up NIS controls so YaST sees it properly? or What do I need to do to restore NIS group & user control to YaST?
I'm not sure about anybody else, but I have spent many hours today trying to figure out how to get Compiz as a window manager. Alas, I have tasted success. Once compiz and Emerald are both installed, simply go to Code:Configure Desktop > Default Applications > Window Management and then select from the drop down menu.Now those beautiful emerald themes will work. I have seen many other 'solutions' for KDE4 and they may have worked for some, but not for me. I hope this will help somebody who may be as frustrated as I was.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI cannot open YaST nor 'install software' in the GUI. A new window is appears in the panel, but after 10 seconds or so it disappears. When in terminal, i can open YaST.
This happens from time to time and often after a while I can open it again in GUI (also when rebooting). It's very annoying when I want to install something and I cannot open Yast2 (I'm not familiar with terminal, so that's why i want to stay with GUI, which is KDE btw).
how to open firewall ports without using yast. The reason I'm asking is because I'm working on a .sh script for the installation of a couple of programs. Some ports need to be open for the programs to work, I find it really annoying to go to yast and type the ports manually every time. I've looked at /etc/sysconfig/SuSEfirewall2 but can't seem to find anything, I also know that after the changes I will have to stop start the firewall by running:
SuSEfirewall2 stop
SuSEfirewall2 start
Thats my problem at the moment, i cant open YAST without using the command "xhost +" before on bash.

I just tried to install virtual box by downloading the RPM from their website running it with yast. It said install succesful but I checked the install log and this is the result that I got. I did try to run sudo /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup it failed I than ran vim /var/log/vbox-install.log and this information was in the file /usr/share/virtualbox/src/vboxhost/vboxdrv/build_in_tmp: line 55: make: command not found
Is there any reason why taskjuggler is not included in openSUSE? I can see a version available in openSUSE Factory but it is not built with latest libs. I have several of my friends asking for Project Management software under openSUSE and I don't know what to advise them.

I dis-enabled that repository and refreshed all of the remaining Repositories individually and it seemed to work. I then went to the repositories listing and selected "Add" and selected "community" repositories and received the following: WARNING Unable to download list of repositories or no repositories defined. What is my problem? How do I acquire the list of community repositories? I can live with out the Nvidia repository for now but would eventually like to get it back.

I usually have many windows open when I use Ubuntu, and I find it tedious to manage them with the mouse. Is it possible to configure the Windows key so I can call specific, open windows to the screen? Suppose I have Nautilus and a terminal open for example, and suppose Nautilus is "first" (that is: to the far left) on the window bar in the bottom of the screen, and that the terminal is to the right of it. Can I then configure the Windows key so that if I press [WINDOW]+[1], I call the first window to the front (Nautilus), and if I press [WINDOW]+[2] I call the terminal window to the front? It would be very neat if I could do this somehow or in a another intuitive way.

I've gone though every Dolphin option I can find, and there does not appear to be any setting that affect this. Konqueror DOES have a setting, but it seems to be ignored.
