Ubuntu :: 10.04 And Windows 7 Remote Access?

May 10, 2010

I have a Windows 7 (Home Premium) computer and another computer with a fresh installation of Ubuntu 10.04 (32-Bit) on it. Since I have the computer with Windows 7 and it doesn't come with Remote access due to it not being at least the Professional edition (which is really lame if you ask me!), I won't be able to access my Windows computer from my Ubuntu computer (from what I have gathered from [URL].. So my question is how can I access my Ubuntu computer from my Windows 7 machine? Does this require more then just installing Samba on the linux machine? I do have RealVNC Enterprise edition 4.51 if that will work?

Ubuntu :: How To Set Up Remote Access To Computer

May 3, 2010

My home network consists of two computers that share one internet connection via a router. I have a desktop computer that runs Ubuntu (Karmic), connected via ethernet; and a netbook that runs Windows 7 (will be Ubuntu, eventually), which connects wirelessly. Both computers have multiple user accounts. What I would like to do is access my account on the Ubuntu desktop via the netbook while my wife is using the desktop with her account (or enable her to access her account on the desktop while I am using it). I looked into VNC, but it, apparently, only supports the active desktop. So, if someone connected to the computer while it was in use, they would be looking at the other user's desktop. Is this a misconception on my part?

So, I have 3 questions:
-From the netbook, how can I log into my account on the desktop and just get a command-line shell?
- From the netbook, how can I log into my account on the desktop and actually have access to my Gnome desktop?
- If I leave my house with the netbook, and want to log into my desktop machine across the internet (CLI and/or Gnome), how can I do that?

Ubuntu :: Remote Access (SSH Or VNC) Being Blocked

May 18, 2010

I can't seem to remotely SSH or VNC into my machine. If I'm on the LAN and try accessing via LAN IP, it works fine. If i go in through a remote address (my dyndns) or even my home IP, I can't connect (yes, all of the ports are forwarded, I've triple checked this multiple times). Interestingly enough, port 80 works just fine. It would seem as though some sort of firewall is blocking me. I've done this plenty of times before with various machines, and this has me quite perplexed.

Ubuntu :: Remote Access Via Bluetooth?

Jan 4, 2010

I do what I can to Google and forum surf for answers. How possible, is it for someone like myself that is running:GNOME 2.28.1, Ubuntu 9.10 platform via my laptop, to use and control my desktop which was built by me, via my laptop if it's running the same platform...I've read posts about accessing Windows via Linux, however when it comes to find answers related to my issue, it keeps me from installing the OS on my desktop....If I can acheive that, would I then be able to control both units via speech recognition? The laptop unit has a built in microphone as well as bluetooth. The ultimate goal is to create a complete wireless environment accessible via bluetooth, command based or not...I know it might seem a bit farfetched, I'm just reaching the beginning stages of complications via SSH confusion and acknowledging Remote Access oppourtunities

Ubuntu Networking :: Remote Web Server Access?

Sep 7, 2010

I have installed Ubuntu Server (lamp+openssh) on a laptop in order to use it as a testing web server for my projects. After configuring it I've also installed the GUI to make things easier as I'm not very proficient using just the command line.

I'm using the wireless connection on the laptop to communicate with the router and my main desktop (Windows). I've assigned it a static local IP (192.168.1.99) in order to be able to access the sites on my web server from my desktop, and everything works fine.

Now comes my problem: I need to be able to access those local sites from a remote location (outside of my local network) as well. How can I do that?

Ubuntu Networking :: Remote Access To Server?

Mar 29, 2011

We have installed Ubuntu Server 10.04 LTS for file share (Samba) at our local network.

I want to access my local server (Local IP 192.168.1.200) via internet from remote location. I have already installed SSH on our ubuntu server. I understands that using "Putty" we can access our server. Furhter, our Internet IP is dynamic (which is not an issue for us).

Ubuntu Networking :: Remote Access With Dynamic IP?

Jun 28, 2011

I am looking for a way to be able to access my PC from a remote place. The problem is that I have a dynamic IP. I have registered at dyndns and have found settings in the router to 'Activate Dynamic DNS' and then you supply your dyndns address, password and tell it to update the WAN ip address automatically. This works, however only internally and only to the router as opposed to my PC I am not interestes in accessing the router to configure that remotely, only accessing my own PC.

Is this something I can accomplish with:
A ZyXEL P-660R-D1 router
A dynamic WAN IP address
A PC connected to the router
A static IP address for my PC

Ubuntu Networking :: Remote Desktop Access Refused

Feb 17, 2010

I have 4 boxes on a local network: 2 with XP only, 1 with Ubuntu 9.10 only, and 1 with both. All boxes can share folders, set up with share-admin instead of using Nautilus right-click properties for each folder. I can see and control the remote desktops on all boxes, to all other boxes, from all other boxes, with one exception: I can only access the XP desktop on the dual boot box, not the Ubuntu desktop. When I try I get: "Connection to host 192.168.1.102 was closed." I am refused access to the Ubuntu desktop in this manner from both the other Ubuntu machine, and from both XP machines.

My setups are basically plain vanilla with routine installs of Ubuntu 9.10. On the XP machines I am using TightVNC on the XP machines to view both other XP desktops, and the Ubuntu desktop that is accessible. On both Ubuntu setups I am using (I suppose) vino and vinagre, and have completely re-installed what I think is the relevant software. There is no firewall running on the Ubuntu dual boot, when I check ufw. For reasons I cannot determine the inaccessible Ubuntu desktop is not providing its own address but instead in the Remote Desktop config dialogue it identifies itself as 27.0.0.1 which I think is the loopback id. I know so little about this sort of networking that I am not giving all relevant info, but I still thought I'd try.

Ubuntu Servers :: Setup Fileserver For Remote Access?

May 19, 2010

I am very new to Ubuntu (any Linux) evironment. And it has been a long long time since I have dealt with seting up servers. I have done alot of searching but haven't found exactly what I THINK I am looking for.
I want to create a file server (I have created my Ubuntu server cd) and add it to my home network (all windows pcs). I need to be able to access it when away from home ( I work away from home mostly). I will be accessing this with a Windows 7 laptop.

What do I need installed on the server? Samba for the file server part. What else for the remote access? I also would rather not access the data via FTP. I would like it to come up as a drive in my Windows Explorer. If not, I remember back in college (20 years ago) when I could open a little window (XWindow maybe) on the other server.

An issue I see that might not be an issue. I have a static IP from my ISP. It comes into my home via their modem. I attach to the modem with a router. All my laptops connect to it wireless and this server will be wired. How do I hit the server and not one of the laptops with only having the one IP address? Each of these plus my external harddrive and printer have their own internal IP address' that I have assigned.

Ubuntu :: Remote Access Without An Active Logon Session?

Oct 10, 2010

I'm in the process of converting my Windows NT server to an ubuntu server box. I've been testing the server edition in a virtual machine and I only have one problem.

My server computer doesn't have a screen and i was wondering if i can logon to the computer using remote desktop without an active logon session already in progress.

At the moment, I need to be logged on in the desktop environment before i can connect to the remote desktop service in Ubuntu. In Windows, you don't need to have an active logon session to connect remotely (so you can startup a session without needing a screen). I would like to have the same, so i don't need to run to server just to logon after restarting it.

It is probably some service i need to start on system boot, but well, i'm not that familiar yet with linux servers, at least not to do that kind of stuff.

My users would also like to have a visual interface (which is why i installed the ubuntu-desktop from the repository).
