Ubuntu Installation :: Ten Minute Start Up?

May 1, 2011

I just updated to Natty yesterday and I went straight into burg no problem, but from that point Ubuntu takes anywhere from 5 to 10 minutes to boot. I literally have to leave the room and go do other things while waiting. So, today I did a complete fresh install and it is on ssd with plenty of space, go straight to grub no problems. Windows 7 will boot at its normal speed, but Ubuntu just sits with a purple screen for anywhere to 5-10 minutes after grub menu. I have reinstalled two more times and still same issue, holding down and tapping shift key did make it boot one time in about a minute and a half (usual time in 10.10 on my machine is about 12 seconds). I don't think it is a graphics issue but I am running an ATI card.

Ubuntu :: Keyboard / Mouse Unresponsive For 1st Minute Of Start Up - Cause Of It?

Jul 29, 2010

This just started happening recently on an older install of Linux Mint 9, 32 bit, Gnome with Compiz using a Logitech wireless keyboard and mouse.

I noticed another problem about the same time and I don't know if it is related but now when I restart I get the "default keyring login" pop up message. The keyboard and mouse are unresponsive for at least 60-90 seconds after everything has opened. It only recently started to do this and is not a result of old/slower hardware.

I don't know where to start looking for a cause or what section to post this in.

When I try to boot or install from it, the screen shows the "ubuntu" with the red dots for a minute and then a black screen with no action from the hard drive or the CD drive. I think it should be asking what language I want but presing enter does nothing.I have been using Ubuntu since 2006 and after yesterday's repartition I installed 6.06 from a live CD so I know I can install from a CD.

May 2, 2010

I'm having a bit of a problem with the new Ubuntu 10.04 installed on my Windows 7 based machine via Wubi. I see the error message "Try hd(0,0): NTFS5: No wubildr" on my screen for around two minutes, then "Try hd(0,1)" shows on the next line briefly, then Grub loads and I can boot normally. All the time the error message is on the screen there is lots of hard drive activity. Is there anything I can do to fix this delay in my booting up sequence?

Ubuntu :: 10.04 - 10 Minute Bootups?

Jul 8, 2010

I recently upgraded to 10.04 but also changed around some drives and it is now taking nearly 10 minutes to boot.The drive changes were the removal of one SATA drive used for storage and the addition of a two drive RAID1 set via the onboard ICH10R SATA controller that is used for storage. I then used DMRAID to initialize the raid set in Ubunutu. All of the operating system is still located on the primary IDE drive.Here are two versions of my bootchart:I turned off quiet mode hoping to see an error during bootup to search for but here is what I see prior to the system pausing for 5+ minutes:

Code:
[ 18.781348] kjournald starting. Commit interval 5 seconds.
[ 18.781367] ext3-fs: mounted filesystem with ordered data mode

Ubuntu :: Random (10 Minute) Delays In Printing?

Mar 25, 2010

I have recently installed Ubutnu 9.10 on a laptop machine for my girlfriend, and she uses an HP 6300 series all-in-one printer. While things are generally good, the printer randomly delays output for long periods, often as much as ten minutes of delay. The delays might occur at any point during the output, that is, printing will often start, but then hang part way through a page. Sometimes, the delay is sol long (more than ten minutes) that the printer seems to timeout, form feeds the page, and abandons the output. Mostly, however, great patience results in output resuming after the many minutes delay and the page will complete. For multi-page outputs, the delay might occur more than once during the total output, and sometimes you get lucky and the whole thing comes out in a single shot.

my girlfriend is eying up the windows xp install disks and expressing socially unacceptable desires

Ubuntu :: Taking Screenshots With Scrot Every Minute?

Jul 12, 2010

I have an issue with crontab that I can't resolve even though I searched the web like crazy. I tried to create a new cron job for taking a screenshot automatically every minute with scrot using "crontab -e" like so...

Code:
* * * * * /usr/bin/scrot ~/screenshots/screen\%G-\%T.png > ~/log.txt

when I run it in my shell it does work fine and it seems to run with cron also because the log.txt file is modified every minute, however when I run it through cron the screenshots don't appear in the screenshots directory and nowhere else either.

Other jobs in the same crontab run very well. It doesn't seem to be a PATH issue because the paths are complete.

Programming :: 30 Minute Timer In Bash

Jun 8, 2011

I've recently started coding in bash and I'm making a diagnostic check CD for rackmounted computers to print out to an LCD screen. So far it works but what i want it to do is, when it checks what ethernet ports are unplugged, it stays there for 30 minutes or so and proceeds through the script. I've looked up cron and that seems to be useful for making timers on permanent systems but I just want the cd to boot, do the check and then eject it and let the real OS take over and I've also tried using:

while [ `sleep 30m` ];
do
<script>

with no luck. Is there any command I can use to do this? I've noticed a few examples where people have captured the time and then used a while less than/greater than statement but I'm not sure how to do this. Is it possible to do a concept like:

while [ %current time -lt %current time+30 min ];
do
<script>

Ubuntu :: X11vnc Server Logs Out To Login Screen After 1 Minute?

Nov 3, 2010

I have x11vnc server set up on my desktop PC. I can boot the computer and connect at the login screen if I want to. I can login to my computer as usual. But after about 1 minute of logging in, the computer logs off as if pressing Ctrl+Alt+Backspace and returns me to the login screen. This cycle repeats when I login and I have to kill the x11vnc process or remove the command from /etc/gdm/Init/Default.Have tried so many things now but the end result is the same. I have Ubuntu 10.10 fully updated and x11vnc 9.10-1 from the default repos. I am using the following command in the /etc/gdm/Init/Default file:

Code:

/usr/bin/x11vnc -rfbauth ~/.vnc/passwd -rfbport 5901 -display :0 -forever -bg

I don't think it matters now whether I add KillInitClients=false into /etc/gdm/gdm.conf-custom or /etc/gdm/gdm.conf because of the x11vnc version I have. The manual says its not really needed. But I have tried this too with no better luck.The computer will still log me out after about a minute of logging in. It can be between 1 min to 1.5 mins.Running out of ideas and have tried the -noxfixes and -reopen commands.

Why does x11vnc crash out (or it may be gdm or x server?) after about a minute of logging in? If I am currently viewing my desktop through VNC viewer on another computer, it will still crash out after 1 min of log in, and lose the connection. I can reconnect through VNC again but I have to log back in to the remote computer and it will just log out after another minute.At last, in 2 days I have finally solved it. As simple as creating my own version. The x11vnc 9.10-1 version my default Ubuntu 10.10 repos is buggy. Here's my fix (I used this site):

1. Downloaded latest x11vnc dev build from above site (x11vnc-0.9.13-dev.tar.gz at time of posting)
2. Extract it
3. Open Terminal > sudo -s > enter admin password
4. cd LocationOfExtracted folder
