Software :: Use Traceroute To View Hop Count Between Machine And A Specified External Host
Nov 3, 2010
I'm trying to use traceroute to view hop count between my machine and a specified external host but no matter what I give to it, it provides me the same output:
[Code]...
What am I doing wrong? Should I be disabling DNS caching? Is there a property I haven't set correctly? Just a small FYI, but I dual boot this computer with Win7 and it's tracert works fine. UPDATE: I also ran the command from a different network and it worked fine. I'm assuming I need a port forward then?

I have an apache server running on my ubuntu machine. I can view them using my local ip (192.168.1.6):80/. And my friends can view the things hosted on my server using my external ip (example http://123.123.123.123:80) but when a friend links back to me to show me what they are looking at and share the moment, I can't view the link, it simply redirects to my router login page.
I had an older linksys router and this could work fine. I could click on the links with my external IP and it routes back to my server for viewing.
Remember to note that I am on the machine that has the server, and I'd like to be redirected out and back to it so we can share pictures back and fourth without me having to replace the external IP address with my local one just to view that link in the browser.

naman@naman-laptop:~$ traceroute google.co.in
google.co.in: Name or service not known
Cannot handle "host" cmdline arg `google.co.in' on position 1 (argc 1)
Then I tracked the IP address of google.com on [URL] and tried
naman@naman-laptop:~$ traceroute 74.125.77.99
traceroute to 74.125.77.99 (74.125.77.99), 30 hops max, 40 byte packets
connect: Network is unreachable
I have to use my college proxy server to connect to the Internet. When I traceroute to a host within the LAN there is no problem. What should I do to be able to traceroute to a host outside my local network?

Have done a bit of Googling around this but got totally swamped so will try here. Basically we are running a CentOS server which hosts a number of virtual hosts under Apache. Recently I needed to set up a development environment for another site using Ubuntu and have this running and accessible on the LAN from a VMWare image. I'm using bridged networking so the VMWare machine has its own IP on the LAN subnet.
I've set up a DNS to point to the external IP of the physical host but can't figure out how to route traffic requested on this domain to the VMWare host. I've basically tried two approaches (configuring a proxy web server and reverse proxy in an httpd.conf file and mucking around with iptables forwarding rules but without success.
Ideally I'd like somesite.somewhere.com to point to the VMWare IP but I could live with a custom port on the end if thats whats required.
To throw further complication into the mix I need reliable communication between the VMWare machine and external mail relay servers in order to debug any issues with mail bouncebacks, embargos etc.
Any idea what's the easiest way to accomplish this?

I have WD external hdd (80GB) formatted with fat32. I was using this hdd to transfer the data from computer A (LINUX, RH9) to computer B (Win7).
I was keep copying and deleting the data in the WD hdd during the data transfer because the amount to transfer is more than 300GB.
After doing this several times (and the WD drive was emptied), comp. A said the disk is full. I checked using 'df' and it was really full but 'ls -la' shows that there is no data in it.
I checked it in comp. B, and it showed empty. I tried to format in comp. A using 'mkdosfs -F 32 /dev/xxx# (block#)', but showed an error message like below.
'Warning: block count mismatch: found 78xxxxx but assuming 0'.
I found a similar situation in this forum metioning 'possible damaged linux kernel (not exactly same expression though)', so I re-installed linux in comp. A, but the problem was not solved.
1. why the disk info. is showed differently in linux and win7
2. why I cannot format it

I own an HP Mini with Ubuntu Netbook Remix, and a Western Digital 500 GB Portable External Hard Drive. I recently started to not be able to view the files on my external, with the message:
Unable to mount the volume 'Elements'.
Details Failed to open $AttrDef: Input/output error Failed to mount '/dev/sdb1': Input/output error NTFS is either inconsistent, or you have hardware faults, or you have a SoftRAID/FakeRAID hardware. In the first case run chkdsk /f on Windows then reboot into Windows TWICE. The usage of the /f parameter is very important! If you have SoftRAID/FakeRAID then first you must activate it and mount a different device under the /dev/mapper/ directory, (e.g. /dev/mapper/nvidia_eahaabcc1). Please see the 'dmraid' documentation for the details. I don't think I have any SoftRAID/FakeRAID hardware, and I definitely don't run Windows.

I have two DNS servers, one local and one remote, and I am trying to get them to talk to each other using views.
The problem I'm having is that the remote server can talk to the local one and receive zone files, but if I update the local server internal view, the remote doesn't receive the update. Here is my config:
Quote:
key "external" {
algorithm hmac-md5;
secret "xxxxx";

I have a physical machine of CentOs-5.4 on which I had installed Xen Virtualization. I have created VMs on that machine using virt-install. After installing all the VMs i used command virt-manager to see all the installed VMs. But after I have restarted my physical machine I am unable to find installed VMs by virt-manager command. It only shows name of the machine and id a qemu and can't see any installed VMs.

I've heard that all one needs to do to host a website is to install apache2 and then create my own webpages in /var/www. Like I could start out putting a file "index.html" in /var/www and it would show up on the web.If this is true, what would my website address be on the web?

I am looking for c/c++ code (no third party lib dependency) to get the physical address of ethernet card on mother board.Most of them suggests to use the linux commands and process the output. For example "/sbin/ifconfig eth0".The problem with above command is that when you run this on a linux variant which is running using VirtualBox on windows host, it's not returning the correct mac address. In this case the correct mac address is the one set for individual virtual machine."/sbin/ifconfig eth0" works fine when linux variant is installed normally.There is another case when linux variant is installed normally and if you install virtualization apps such as VirtualBox or VmPlayer, they create a virtual adepter for their own use. In that case running "/sbin/ifconfig" returns all the adepters. (physical and virtual)

I have a fairly standard home network set-up with a router and a couple machines on the internal network (with private IP addresses 10.0.0.x). One of these machines is running my subversion server, which is in turn used by my laptop. I am now trying to configure my laptop in a way that I can have one working subversion copy connected to the repository which works both when the laptop is connected to my home network as well as if its connecting from internet. I configured a "virtual server" on the router, so that port 443 goes to the machine with subversion, and this works fine. Now I don't know how to configure the laptop to go to the same machine - because the IP is different if I want to access it from outside and from inside. I tried to connect to the external IP of my network, but the router refuses to let the connection go "out and in again". how to get it configured?
I am using Debian linux with wpa_supplicant on the laptop.

what I am trying to do is use an external transparent proxy for only one of the hosts on my internal network. For example, for an internal host of 192.168.1.8, I want to send all internet requests for ANY port to a proxy server out in the internet at 238.34.232.7 / port: 8080. All other hosts would use the internet without using any proxy server. Is IPTables the way to set this up or is there an easier option?

I just set up my first ever bind9 DNS server running on ubuntu server 10.04. This server is also my gateway/dhcp server.
Here is what is weird: If I do a dig @8.8.8.8 dschuett-lmtl.scs.local from any of my clients it resolves?!?! Dig shows that it got the answer from MY Bind9 DNS server (and NOT Google's of course), but why is it still resolving when I'm telling it to use and external DNS server?
The other weird thing is that the SAME EXACT dig command above does NOT resolve internal host names if I do it from the Bind9 DNS server. - Which is what i would expect SHOULD be happening if done from the client machines...
Here are the dig results:
From any internal client:

I can ping a host on my LAN successfully, but I cannot ping [URL]... for example. I have disabled the firewall and set http_proxy and can browse the internet with "Use system proxy settings" checked in Firefox. I am unable to update with yum either, but I am not sure if this is a side effect or not. I have run a trace on my ip address as I am browsing the internet and I can see the sites I am visiting on our web appliance. However, if I try to ping or update no requests are hitting the proxy so I don't think that is the issue.

This is a RHEL 5.4 install. I did a fairly routine install setting up a static IP address of 10.5.96.10, a subnet mask of 255.255.254.0, and a gateway of 10.5.96.1 with the standard DNS setup for this network. These are all standard network setting for this network and otherwise work fine on other systems. The IP, gateway, and subnetmask all appear correctly on all relevant configuration files. This server can not ping any other system on the network and can not ping its default gateway. No other systems can ping this one either. Also this system can not ping "localhost" or its own hostname. The hosts file contains the line:
[code]...
I can ping 127.0.0.1 and 10.5.96.10 and it works fine. Also the firewall is disabled. I know I probably can't get a straight forward fix with the information I have on hand right now, I'm more of a Debian guy, so there might be some Red Hat intricacies I'm not familiar with. I think I had a CentOS install some months back that had this issue and I don't remember how I fixed it, or if I even did. I might have just replaced it with Debian. That's unfortunately not an option this time around since it's not my box.
