I would like to run linux on windows 7 starter. Google tells me that I have to upgrade at least to home premium to have windows virtual pc, but that is not for free..besides I don t need xp, i just want to run linux..So I would like to know if there is another way, a free program/virtual machine for win 7 to run linux on.

I have already found intructions on how to dual boot the way I want, and how to change the wallpaper in Windows 7 Starter. I also already have experiance with Ubuntu, Unity 3D, and Windows XP.What would be the best solution?
I've just installed linux on my Acer Aspire One netbook, (10.10 netbook edition) I've done it as a duel boot with Windows 7 Starter as i want to use Linux, family want to use windows. But ideally i would want the pc to boot up as Windows then say if i hit a certain key on bootup it would swap it over to Linux from windows before it starts to load?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have an Intel Core i7 860, 8 GB RAM, with nVidia Quadro NVS 295 graphics card running openSUSE 11.4 with KDE 4.7. Moving, resizing, and minimizing windows, opening the starter menu is sluggish, choppy. It's not that I cannot live with it, but it should be smooth, and that's what bothering me. It seems like I have tried "everything" to fix the problem, disabling the blur effect, the pixmap trick, changing nVidia driver (both the latest beta 285.03, the latest stable 280.13, and the one from the repository, 275.21), and enabling and disabling the things on the "Advanced" tab for desktop effects.
Changing from the Oxygen theme to something else improved it a bit, but it is still very choppy. It seems related to the number of windows I have open. If I have one window open, everything flows nicely, but already with two windows it becomes slow. I have a dual screen (TwinView) setup, but removing the second screen did not improve anything. I'm not very good at the graphics part. I can't stand all the comments about "sluggish Linux graphics" I get from MS Windows users.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI am semi new to the embedded linux scene. I dont use UNIX much but I have played around with it and know how powerful it is. Currently just finished a degree in Computer System Engineering in the UK and have a whole summer break to mess around doing something. So I have decided to start a project I've been planning.
Starting the project, first of all I need to find a good handheld system I can work on. This is where I'll be importing the code onto/applications. At the moment all I want it to do is boot and run a distro of linux, but in the future I am going to be working on making it 3/4G and wirelessly able.
What I need:
-Size is roughly around the same size as a ipod maybe, or smaller.
-Needs a nice screen, nothing massive but needs to be easily readable.
-Text entry is needed, but im sure a few buttons can do it.. keypad would be really really nice though.
-A 3.5mm audio jack (or something similar to plug headphones into) is needed or it needs to have the capiblity to install this.
-Wifi/3G support, needs to be able to support these in the future or able for me to hack them in.
-Rechargeable powersource.
-Cost, nothing mega expensive !

View 4 Replies View RelatedI've just started using Linux and am having troubles getting various drivers to work/install i've tried to install an nvidia 32bit linux graphics driver which fails once you right click it, display/run it and the progress bar gets to the end and just comes up red saying failed (can't remember what it exactly says)
i've also tried to install my pci wireless driver, the readme that came with it is very confusing, i tried to run the autorun.sh file, which doesnt seem to-do anything. i think i got somewhere by putting in code to the terminal which i got from the readme, but no luck.
Also is their a chipset driver i have to install? as with windows, when my comp starts all the fans come on at 100% then software throttles them once in windows, wheras with ubuntu their just 100% all the time.
i've tried looking for other threads to cure my problem with no luck. But did notice alot of people ask to see lspci results, here it is..

I recently installed Linux Mint 9 and am having problems with an application that requires Java Web Starter. I was able to find and install it on my computer running Ubuntu 10.01, but can't seem to locate Java Web Starter or make it work on my Linux Mint 9 system. I tried the Java site but couldn't get it to work.
View 4 Replies View Relatedi just installed eclipse, the newewst version from the developer website of course, because the one out of the software center is more than outdated.
Now i have the problem that i don't have any icon in the starter. When i start eclipse i can right click on the icon and make it stick to the startet forever but it has no icon and i can't change it.
So my question is now: How do i add one to the starter? And i don't want to use the desktop right clicking and create a new starter variation of the solution. Firefox has no .desktop file for it's icon in the starter either.
P.S.: For the futurue version a right click on the starter->add or right click on and icon->edit
To understand, I have two partitions in my hard disk laptop, one for data and the other one for windows xp and I also have a extern usb hard disk, this one for ubuntu. What I want to do is to boot Windows with GRUB starter without having to connect the USB hard disk (the hard disk where is ubuntu installed) to laptop. Because when I try to do it without USB hard disk connected, my laptop say "ERROR" and I would like don't be changing from grub starter to windows starter and from windows starter to grub starter each time I want to be with linux or windows isn't the usb disk. Is there any way to relocate the grub files to the internal disk laptop and start up Windows without the external USB hard disk (that has Ubuntu installed). Can I do that all necessary to carry out when I'll start up my laptop (for start up with linux and windows) be found in the data partition laptop hard disk and don't be found in the usb disk? How can I do that replace?

Now I want to build up my home LAN, and want to do it with Linux. I've managed to set up LAMP and file share servers.
What I am looking for is information on what I need, and how to set up a server for the following tasks:Centralized Username and Password, that when the user logs into any one of the desktops in the LAN, it uses this for authentication
Something that allows this authentication to be utilized in other servers (file access, web access, router logging, etc.). Something to make it easier for continuing permissions from one service to another. e.g. I have IPCop filtering content, and it has provisions for tracking who is making which request if there is authentication going on. (optionally) to run a script for mounting Samba shares or mapped network drives so from one system to the next. For example, in whatever box somebody logs in, it mounts a server share ("smb://Myserver/users/<username>") to a local folder ("my_user_share").
So;user "fred" ="smb://Myserver/users/fred" and user "wilma" = "smb://Myserver/users/wilma" but both would find their respective one mounted under "~/my_user_share". This would be irrespective of which box they are loggin in with. If the server share location changes (new server/servername), I change it on the server so the next time they log in it points to the right place.
I guess it is similar to Window's Active Directory, though I'm not sure what it's called, how to configure it and what it is and is not capable of doing.
Last week I installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my system in dual booting. I had installed succesfully both but unable to see data files from windows OS. Though I have excercised the options in various resources available on internet/blogs. System takes about 03 hrs during installation process. I am also unable to configure Thunderbird.

I have a hp pc that has a hard drive of 750 gb and a recovery hard drive of 31gb. I installed linux side by side with windows 7 for dual booting. Now I can't boot windows 7 anymore. During the installation of linux, I chose the advanced option so as to manually partition the drives for linux. On the available list of drives, I chose the 750gb and clicked on modify. I chose 150gb for the root "/" (on ext4) and 700mb for swap out of the 750gb and clicked install. After finishing the installation I restarted the pc and sought to test linux. The linux works fine but when i tried to start windows, I have a boot error. My pc doesn't seem to recognize windows anymore. It takes me straight to the HP recovery tool. I don't understand why. So I logged into ubuntu and check the disk utility and I discovered that I have a whooping 600gb unallocated space. It's like my whole windows is gone. This is what Disk Utilty shows

What can I do to recover my windows back?
Is it possible to have the Windows bootloader point to Windows 7 and a Linux partition instead of using GRUB to point to Windows 7 and Linux?

I've read that, when configuring a dual-boot system, you should install Windows first to avoid any issues.Some questions: I'm assuming this has to do with the boot loader so: How is Windows boot loader so different that this matters? If I'm totally off, please explain.Is this the same case with Windows 7 and Windows XP? Depending on question 1 of course: Will installing Windows later on mean that it will definitely not work or just that you might encounter issues later on? Some tutorials are kind of ambiguous about that point.

I mounted my Windows hard drive into Ubuntu and now whenever I try to long onto Windows I get a black screen with the mouse where the log-in page should be. I used all the commands that was I had read about like "sudo mount" and stuff and I can see my Windows files in Ubuntu but no log-on page for Windows.

I have a partition on the second drive for GRUB, and the normal Windows bootloader partition on the first drive. I previously had it set up with EasyBCD to be able to chainload the bootloader on the second hard drive, however now with Windows 8 installed in addition to Windows 7 and Linux, it only shows the menu options for Windows (It only shows Windows 7/8 in the boot menu).
Is it still possible to boot Linux from the Windows bootloader?
What I'm looking to do is to use Linux to help me remove malware and etc. from any Windows based computer. We are currently using 32-bit Dell computers with Windows XP SP3. New computer orders are 64-bit Windows 7. Previously, I have used Ghost to create images, but it is getting harder to have all the different images saved and other criterias. My plan is to create an USB Linux boot with the Windows software to remove malware, trojans and all the others. I currently have an 8Gb USB flash drive to use for this project. I was looking at Puppy Linux, but I think there is something messing whether it be with puppy or me. I am not limiting myself to just this project. This just happens to be one selected and approved by my bosses. Since we are using both platforms in this school district -- Macs and PCs. Eventually, I should be able to use my laptop with at least a dual boot environment.
