Feb 6, 2009i installed kde on my centos and now all of the text is boxes, im guessing its a missing language pack or something.

General :: All Text In Text Editor Turned To Boxes?
Jul 17, 2009I was trying to install GTK+-2.8.20, so I installed it's necessary dependencies in this order:
pkg-config-0.23
glib-2.20.4
pango-1.24.4
jpeg library
tiff library
cairo
And I was about to install the last dependency: ATK (Accessability Toolkit).I opened the Archive Manager to extract the "atk-1.26.0.tar.gz" file (yes, I'm still switching from Windows so I'm fond of GUI), but I noticed all the text in that window was boxes, like the □ type box for every letter of text.So instead I thought it wouldn't be a big deal, because the terminal and regular windows weren't screwed up.I opened a text file in gedit (reference to commands in terminal, such as how to extract files via terminal), but yet again all of the text was □-like boxes.
Ubuntu :: Crazy Length Text Boxes In Web Browsers?
Jun 16, 2010did a search and I can't believe I seem to be only person reporting this. It's been a bug since I did a fresh install of 10.04 UNR, but it's only gotten to the tipping point where I actually HAVE to do something about it today. I finally cracked.As you can see in the screen shot attached the one line text box (ie, search bars mostly, but the thread title in this case) stretches way beyond length it is supposed to. For the first screen shot I have "zoomed out" to give a better idea of the full effect, the second screen is what I see during normal browsing.If anyone could help me fix this error it would be greatly appreciated. I've tried both Firefox and Chrome (and Chromium) and the same issue occours. The screen shot is taken from Chrome 5.0.375.70

Jul 11, 2010I'm having a strange problem with Firefox. I like to tab through text boxes rather than clicking on each one. Problem is, I don't really know if it has anything to do with the tabbing honestly, but I'll type in the box I'll get one letter than it will highlight it all on its own and then obviously get replaced with the next letter I type. I can type one letter, press the forward arrow and type another letter then it automatically highlights the 2 letters, etc etc. I'm really not even sure how to stop it, I try clicking in the box and they doesn't seem to do anything. I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 with firefox 3.6.6.

Apr 29, 2010I installed CentOS 5.4 in a Virtualbox instance using the text mode installer. The GUI installer crashes. I chose the "Server (GUI)" option when installing the system, but upon completion of the install, I'm presented with a text mode login screen. Logging in as root drops me to a shell in text mode as I would expect.
What exactly IS "Server (GUI)?" I was thinking it would be a stripped down X11 desktop.
The main role of the Virtualbox instance is to run a server stack that we run on other CentOS machines, but I want Eclipse and perhaps just a few other GUI tools on it, without all the kitchen-sink crap that (I assume, coming from the Ubuntu world) comes with a "Desktop" install.

Software :: Install CentOS On One Of Those BSI Portable Boxes?
Jul 6, 2010I'm trying to install CentOS on one of those BSI portable boxes. When installing, it gives this error:"Errno 30 Read-only file system." Which is weird because it's obviously not read only, and doesn't fail right away. It's an IDE optical drive, and a SATA hard drive. I thought it was the SATA optical drive to IDE HDD install issue that has been seen before, but not the case here. The disc is in known-working condition.

Feb 12, 2010What's the consensus on the least hassle-prone method to do a bare metal install on multiple machines? I've just been handed a network with 20 identical servers (they're ~4 year old HP quad-Opteron machines with identical hardware configs). They're currently running a mishmash of stuff and I've been told I can re-purpose them. I'd like to create a generic kickstart and pave over them all with CentOS 5.4 with the only difference being the IP address for each machine. I have physical access to the machines and already know the MAC address for each one. Sadly, they are racked up and have no floppy or optical drive, but they DO have an exposed USB port on the front panel.

Dec 30, 2010In CentOS 5.4 (Final), emacs is displaying characters as little boxes. see attached screen shot. I searched the Web and found others have this same problem with emacs in CentOS 5.4 but have not found any solution. I installed emacs in a base CentOS Amazon EC2 instance as follows:

This issue does not arise for me in Amazon EC2 instances running Red Hat, Fedora, or Ubuntu when I install emacs as I did here. I am not X font savvy

May 5, 2009My first time installing centos server and adding it to xp home network. I am new to setting up my own network in general. I have a home windows wired ethernet xp network (simple linxs router) with 2 xp boxes and one centos5 box all connected to the same router. I just set up the centos box running tomcat on port 8080. I need to do two very basic things at this point, but am not sure what I need to do:
What do I need to do so I can:
1. Connect in firefox on one of my xp boxes and call the tomcat server running on my centos box?
2. Be able to ftp to centos box from either of my xp boxes?
CentOS 5 Networking :: Boxes Appear To Be Limited At ~10kb/s When Connecting To Any FTP Server Outside Of Our Network
Jul 13, 2010I'm having a bizarre problem with FTP transfers from my CentOS 5.3 boxes, All of my CentOS boxes appear to be limited at ~10kb/s when connecting to any FTP server outside of our network. We have no network infrastructure which would cause this, however when I use a windows based machine it is able to connect fine.
I took my laptop running Vista, and rebooted it onto a CentOS 5.3 LiveCD, and same issue.
I have checked our iptables, cleared the rules, removed the kernel modules, checked CBQ/TC it looks like nothing is limiting this. Also, other protocols work fine. Both the windows and linux boxes used passive transfers for it.
Is there anything other than iptables/CBQ which would be on a out of the box install of CentOS I should check? Is there any kernel settings for NAT connections which may cause this?

I can see no reason why centos-relese-notes should depend on centos-release when I try "yum erase centos-release-notes" I am told there are 72 dependancies including completely irrelevant packages such as tar all because of this unnecessary dependancy.
The centos-release-notes package simply contains a bunch of text/html files that nothing else relies upon, so why the dependancies ?

So I use text mode.I would like to have a very small installation with very few installed packages, so at package selection I uncheck everything. This method results over 400 packages to bo installed... Jan 16, 2011I'm some what new to ubuntu and i would really like to start using it as my main operating system and get rid of windows. The first problem i face here is that I am unable to install Ubuntu using the normal gui mode.As soon as i select the option to install ubuntu the files starts loading and then the screen goes blank.. but the monitor is still live. So i installed ubuntu using the text based installer.. everything went fine, i installed the system and at boot loader i selected my Os but still the old demon comes in "Blank screen". I've tried all the related forums and tried all the options best to my knowledge, but its still the same.. I am not even able to get a command prompt/terminal. I know that this is a problem with my ATI (i can hear the sighs!!!!!) video card. Now I know that Ubuntu is being loaded cause i can hear the welcome sound of Ubuntu(drums sound).

Ubuntu :: Desktop Computer Boots Into Text Mode After Nvidia Drivers Installed
Jan 12, 2011After installing ubuntu 64 bit, I installed all my updates and installed the current nvidia driver for my 9800 GTX+ from the additional drivers page. After restarting my computer, ubuntu boots into text mode. I used google and found out a couple of commands like:
After i hit control+alt+f7 it hangs on checking battery state with NO ok to the right of it. after running sudo apt-get --purge remove nvidia -current and restarting the computer, the boot hangs on the ubuntu screen everytime.
My specs are:
Core i7 860
4 GB of ram

Nov 10, 2009I just upgraded by box from Fedora Core 9 to Centos 5.2. Finally!I have a 500GB SATA drive, it's partitioned into three equal size slices, hda1 through 3. The old Fedora was on hda1, I installed the new Centos on hda3. I instructed the installer to write the MBR to /dev/hda, not /dev/hda3. Fdisk says I have sector 0 unused.First, the system wouldn't boot - it just looped through the BIOS, rebooting over and over again. The BIOS sees the disk, but it never loaded Grub. I tried re-running grub-install /dev/hda, and not I get a Grub Error 17 after stage 1.5 loads.
I can boot from rescue OK, the grub.conf man menu.lst look fine, it's pointing to "root (hd0,2)". It's either the BIOS that can't find the MBR, or the MBR can't find Grub.When I looked at the disk with fdisk after the install, hda1 was still marked bootable, hda3 was not, so I swapped bootable flags but that has not made a difference. I also appended the new grub to the old grub thinking I could get the MBR (if it is there) to load the old grub and thence find the new Centos, but that didn't work either.Mobo is an old Shuttle AK35.Any ideas? Did I mess up by not telling the system to put the MBR on /dev/hda3? Is there a way to fix this without reinstalling?
