Software :: Samba - Win XP Can Connect By IP But Cannot Browse?

Apr 8, 2011

I am running samba 3.5.8-74 on Fedora 14. I can connect to it from several Windoze XP machines by typing the ip address or searching for the computer name. However, when browsing the workgroup from XP, the share does not show up. I also can not see the share from my new WD TV Live Plus. I suspect the two problems are related.

I have disabled my firewall to insure that it is not in the way, but no change. I have set up samba users to match my XP users, and numerous other attempts at modifying smb.conf to get it to work, but to no avail.

Here is my smb.conf file--

# This is the main Samba configuration file. For detailed information about the
# options listed here, refer to the smb.conf(5) manual page. Samba has a huge
# number of configurable options, most of which are not shown in this example.

Fedora Networking :: Cannot Browse Windows With Samba

Jun 13, 2010

I can browse, add and delete files on my fc13-64 machine from windows xp or vista. But not from the fc13-64 machine to or from any of the windows machines. I have installed samba, smb and nmb are running (reliably) selinux is disabled and the firewall is on; although i have noticed with it off I can't browse in either direction. Can't browse windows with samba but can browse samba with windows, is a problem I overcame with fc-12 but I can't remember how.

Networking :: Unable To Browse Samba Servers And Shares?

Mar 26, 2011

clean install of Slackware 13.1 64-bit. From day 1 I have been unable to browse Samba servers and shares on my home network. NFS, FTP, SSH, etc all seem to be working fine. I've been updating it regularly in case this was a bug, but I'm not so sure any more.

Reboot in WinXP sp3, I can browse fine. My wife's Win7 laptop works fine. My old Slack 12.2 system worked fine. I have not made any changes to the network other than adding this computer to the mix.

Server :: Cannot Browse Samba Share Remotely From Windows 7

Feb 20, 2011

I wanted to setup a Samba share on a box running Ubuntu 10.4 and share it to Windows 7 computers throughout my house. When I browse the Network (thru Windows), I can see "Media Devices" that correspond with the locations of where I will put the media. The problem is that I have been unable to copy the media to the Ubuntu server because I cannot see the Ubuntu "computer" from Windows 'Network'.

All computers are on the same Workgroup

Running the following command line from Windows returns no errors and lists the samba share:

Using the testparm command on my smb.conf returns only one error (which previous googling seems to indicate is not an issue). The following is what was returned by the command:

Ubuntu :: Samba 9.10 - Cannot Print Or Browse To Shared Drives From IMac

Feb 4, 2010

I had a box running 9.04 that I upgraded to 9.10 and I cannot print or browse to shared drives from my iMac. I have several other Macs and PCs that work fine. This was the first that I setup to print on 9.04. I have attempted everything that I can find including installing in CUPS, using the ip address, etc. I can browse to workgroup and I see the computer but when I try to use either USERID guest or userid/passwd - I get no response.

I looked in the /var/log/samba for this computer and here is what I am getting for an attempt:

Ubuntu Servers :: Samba Users Able To Browse Folders With No Permission

Feb 11, 2011

I've set up smbd 3.4.7 on 10.04x64 LTS server. I've set up a couple shares and I'm having problems blocking access to certain directories using native file permissions. There is one directory that has folders for each sales rep to store their current list of quoted clients, I only want sales people to be able to browse the directories owned by themselves. Everything seems to be set up correctly in terms of user groups and permissions on the filesystem.

Below is marina, a sales rep, and brian, a super user of sorts.
id marina:
Code:
uid=1011(marina) gid=1006(office) groups=1006(office),1005(sales)
id nick:
Code:
uid=1000(brian) gid=1006(office) groups=1006(office),118(admin),1001(full),1002(processing),1003(management),1004(it),1005(sales)

Below is the directory with all the sales reps folders.
ls -la:
Code:
total 60
drwxrwxr-x 15 root it 4096 2011-02-10 20:06 .
drwxr-x--- 9 root office 4096 2010-11-19 12:40 ..
drwxrwx--- 13 katya full 4096 2010-12-07 12:36 Katya
drwxrwx--- 18 lana full 4096 2011-02-08 17:09 Lana
drwxrwx--- 23 marina full 4096 2011-02-10 18:09 Marina
drwxrwx--- 4 mike full 4096 2011-02-01 12:42 Mike

With this setup marina only be able to browse her folder, but she can browse all folders and has full write access to all folders. This leads me to believe something is up with the smbd.conf file, which is below.

Code:
[global]
workgroup = COMTREAD
null passwords = no
server string = Root Server
dns proxy = no
log file = /var/log/samba/log.%m
max log size = 1000
syslog = 0 .....

In this case the valid users directive would not work cause I am not making a share for each user. I had this on other shares like the db2 share. My windows box lagged heavily when I tried to access that share with an invalid user. How to deny users the ability to modify permissions I would also like to do that.

Ubuntu Networking :: Samba Network - Setting Up The Unbutu PCs To Browse The Workgroup

Dec 30, 2010

I have a home network with Ubuntu (3 PC) Windows (XP 3, 7 1 vista 1) and Lacie networked drive. I have successfully edited fstab to mount the lacie drive at startup on my main ubuntu PC and it works a treat. My problem is setting up the Unbutu PCs to browse the workgroup. This was working but now (since my last update of Unbutu I think) I get prompted for a password and no matter what I do it does not let me browse.

Now I have read a few things on Samba and do not have the time or ability to become a network engineer. All I want to do is is have on my Ubuntu the same browsing ability that seems to come out of the box in Windows.

These settings work fine with Mint but its not working for me using Ubuntu. I did try to ping, sometimes it works sometimes it wont.

When I connect to it from itself it works fine (smbclient -L localhost). But when I try to connect to it from the outside I get rejected.

Connection to AAA.BBB.CCC.DDD failed (Error NT_STATUS_UNSUCCESSFUL)

I'm guessing this is a ports issue? That's kinda weird since I thought Debian didnt come with an firewall. And port 80 and 22 works fine.

Debian :: Cannot Ping Or Connect To Samba

May 31, 2010

Strange things are happening today to my pc with debian squeeze 2.6.32-3-amd64 kernel.

It can connect to internet via my wirelss rt2870 driver (Ralink, Belkin usb wireless). But I cannot ping any of my other computers in the home network (served by a Belkin N+ wireless router). Other computers can ping it.

I am also connected via ethernet directly to another desktop. Last night I can access the shared file (samba windows share) in this other computer, using ethernet (disabling wireless). Today I cannot. I cannot even ping it or any computer, or itself.

I am using network manager with this interface:

# The loopback network interface
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
# The primary network interface
allow-hotplug eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp

Fedora Networking :: Can't Even Get Samba To Connect

May 20, 2009

I recently have just started using linux and downloaded Fedora 10 and I'm trying to figure out how to fileshare and print share with my windows vista machine.I edited the registry file on my Vista machine HKEY_ LOCAL_ MACHINESystemCurrentControlSetContro lLsaLMCompatibilityLevel and changed the level from 3 to 1.I've also gone through a lot of tutorials on editing the smb.conf file and set my workgroup name, netbios, and changed permissions on my linux machine (a Lenovo netbook) etc but thats about as far as I can get. This may sound like a dumb question but I can't even get samba to connect on my linux machine so how do I do that?

I was wondering if any of you guys can provide a solution as to how to connect or direct me to a good howto for setting up and using Samba seeing how I'm a noob.I've been on Samba.org already and I'm more confused than ever.

Server :: Connect Samba And BartsPE (DOS)?

Sep 29, 2010

I set up a Samba server to authenticate 3 users: ladmin, lead, and volunteer. From both a Linux and Windows XP machine I confirmed all 3 can log in and have appropriate read/write access to the server. In Linux I used smb://host/ and was able to log in. In Windows I used the \host method to similarly browse the share. It seems both Windows and Linux machines have no problem connecting. But I also use a BartsPE (DOS) based CD to connect to the server and it keeps telling me that the password for volunteer (the account I configured to connect to the server) is invalid.

I checked the configuration file the password I'm using is correct. I'm guessing that the problem has to either do with the fact the passwords are encrypted, or that I'm missing some option in my smb.conf file. To create the lead and volunteer accounts I used webmin. I first created nologin Linux user accounts and then converted them to samba accounts using webmin. After doing this I was able to log in from Linux and Windows boxes without problem... the sticking point is this DOS connection. Here's my config file (with some modifications):
