Networking :: Unable To Browse Samba Servers And Shares?

Mar 26, 2011

clean install of Slackware 13.1 64-bit. From day 1 I have been unable to browse Samba servers and shares on my home network. NFS, FTP, SSH, etc all seem to be working fine. I've been updating it regularly in case this was a bug, but I'm not so sure any more.

Reboot in WinXP sp3, I can browse fine. My wife's Win7 laptop works fine. My old Slack 12.2 system worked fine. I have not made any changes to the network other than adding this computer to the mix.

Ubuntu Servers :: Samba Users Able To Browse Folders With No Permission

Feb 11, 2011

I've set up smbd 3.4.7 on 10.04x64 LTS server. I've set up a couple shares and I'm having problems blocking access to certain directories using native file permissions. There is one directory that has folders for each sales rep to store their current list of quoted clients, I only want sales people to be able to browse the directories owned by themselves. Everything seems to be set up correctly in terms of user groups and permissions on the filesystem.

Below is marina, a sales rep, and brian, a super user of sorts.
id marina:
Code:
uid=1011(marina) gid=1006(office) groups=1006(office),1005(sales)
id nick:
Code:
uid=1000(brian) gid=1006(office) groups=1006(office),118(admin),1001(full),1002(processing),1003(management),1004(it),1005(sales)

Below is the directory with all the sales reps folders.
ls -la:
Code:
total 60
drwxrwxr-x 15 root it 4096 2011-02-10 20:06 .
drwxr-x--- 9 root office 4096 2010-11-19 12:40 ..
drwxrwx--- 13 katya full 4096 2010-12-07 12:36 Katya
drwxrwx--- 18 lana full 4096 2011-02-08 17:09 Lana
drwxrwx--- 23 marina full 4096 2011-02-10 18:09 Marina
drwxrwx--- 4 mike full 4096 2011-02-01 12:42 Mike

With this setup marina only be able to browse her folder, but she can browse all folders and has full write access to all folders. This leads me to believe something is up with the smbd.conf file, which is below.

Code:
[global]
workgroup = COMTREAD
null passwords = no
server string = Root Server
dns proxy = no
log file = /var/log/samba/log.%m
max log size = 1000
syslog = 0 .....

In this case the valid users directive would not work cause I am not making a share for each user. I had this on other shares like the db2 share. My windows box lagged heavily when I tried to access that share with an invalid user. How to deny users the ability to modify permissions I would also like to do that.

Fedora Servers :: Encrypting Home Directory Shared Over Samba?

May 6, 2009

I am looking into encrypting some data on a Fedora samba server. I'm not entirely sure the best way to do this. The server is currently running Fedora 5 but it can be updated if necessary.

I would prefer if the server could be booted up and that no interaction at the server itself have to be done so that users can access their shares.

Is there a way for the data to be encrypted on the server but when the user access the share over samba that it can be accessed?

The research i have done so far seems to point towards methods more intended for a desktop setup. Such as entering passwords at bootup or when opening folders.

Fedora Networking :: Cannot Browse Windows With Samba

I can browse, add and delete files on my fc13-64 machine from windows xp or vista. But not from the fc13-64 machine to or from any of the windows machines. I have installed samba, smb and nmb are running (reliably) selinux is disabled and the firewall is on; although i have noticed with it off I can't browse in either direction. Fedora Networking :: Unknown Samba Password - Use Samba For File Sharing Like On A Windows Home Network

Jul 17, 2010

I want to use samba for file sharing like on a Windows home network. Actually they are all Linux machines but nfs is too complicated. On my host machine I installed samba and system-config-samba. I created a new share for /home, check marked writable and visible and put access to everybody. For preferences-->server settings--> security the "authentication mode" is set to user, encrypt passwords is no, and guest account is no guest account. Under preferences-->samba users I added myself as a user with the same windows user name as my Linux user name and the same password.

My client is a virtualbox fedora (used for testing purposes but actual clients will be real computers on my home network). I entered the address smb://192.168.1.184. When asked for the user name and password I put my regular user name and password since that was what I set in samba users. However, the password dialog keeps coming up and won't let met into my own computer. If I quit it says something like access is denied. How can I get my home network back? I liked this feature when my home computers ran XP but I switched them to Fedora 12.

Ubuntu Servers :: Samba Home Directory Sharing In Different Location?

Sep 29, 2010

I have 10.04 and have samba running.

Samba is remotely administered with webmin and aim to setup home directory sharing. I am however having some trouble getting this to work.

I was of the understanding that home directory sharing allows me to create a user in ubuntu, which samba will then pickup and offer it up as a share.

My smb.conf looks like this..

Code:
#======================= Global Settings =======================
[global]
unix extensions = no
share modes = no
security = user

[Code]....

Essentially I've found this works providing I give the samba user a password after it is automatically created using the 'Configure automatic Unix and Samba user synchronisation' option in webmin.

However if I move the location of this home folder off the main drive i.e. /home/username I get turned away at attempted login.

I've tried specifying the path in [homes] using the path = /media/discarray, but this seems to break authentication somehow.

Whenever I try browsing the app from other systems on the network, I get a page cannot be found error message even though the other machines are successfully pinging the linux machine's ip address.

I need to browse it with the ip address because the app is to be accessed from other machines on the network.

Fedora Servers :: Samba Messages In Syslog - Allow Logging To The Standard Samba Logfiles

Mar 18, 2010

I wish to prevent the samba messages (mainly nmbd and winbindd) from appearing in the system log (/var/log/messages). I want to allow samba logging to the standard samba logfiles, but prevent the syslog getting clogged up by samba. I added syslog = 0 to smb.conf and reloaded the config but the messages were still appearing. I also tried the following (and restarted the syslog via /sbin/service syslog restart) # Suppress messages from samba.

nmbd.* /dev/null
smbd.* /dev/null
winbindd.* /dev/null

For interests sake the messages I'm getting are below (I'm not concerned about the messages themselves, I can chase them up at my leisure via the samba logs) Mar 18 09:58:29 SERVER nmbd[3808]: query_name_response: Multiple (2) responses received for a query on subnet xx.yy.z.zz for name DOMAIN<1d>. Software :: Samba - Win XP Can Connect By IP But Cannot Browse?

Apr 8, 2011

I am running samba 3.5.8-74 on Fedora 14. I can connect to it from several Windoze XP machines by typing the ip address or searching for the computer name. However, when browsing the workgroup from XP, the share does not show up. I also can not see the share from my new WD TV Live Plus. I suspect the two problems are related.

I have disabled my firewall to insure that it is not in the way, but no change. I have set up samba users to match my XP users, and numerous other attempts at modifying smb.conf to get it to work, but to no avail.

Here is my smb.conf file--

I'm looking for an easy guide to connect to my home network with Fedora 12. So far I did what I thought was pretty straight forward but I'm not seeing any computers. Here is what I've done

system settings -> advanced -> samba

I set up my two paths that I wanted to be shared when I go to network in Dolphin I'm seeing Network, Network Services and Samba Shares If I click on Network nothing shows, same with Network services, samba shares shows nothing and the bottom reads "unable to find any workgroups on your local network. This might be caused by an enabled firewall"

There are two workgroups which my Ubuntu machine shows fine, workgroup and mshome, I can connect to my roomates and my girlfriends computer no problem within Ubuntu (they are running XP, Vista and Ubuntu).

Ubuntu Networking :: Samba Network - Setting Up The Unbutu PCs To Browse The Workgroup

I have a home network with Ubuntu (3 PC) Windows (XP 3, 7 1 vista 1) and Lacie networked drive. I have successfully edited fstab to mount the lacie drive at startup on my main ubuntu PC and it works a treat. My problem is setting up the Unbutu PCs to browse the workgroup. This was working but now (since my last update of Unbutu I think) I get prompted for a password and no matter what I do it does not let me browse.

Now I have read a few things on Samba and do not have the time or ability to become a network engineer. All I want to do is is have on my Ubuntu the same browsing ability that seems to come out of the box in Windows.

Red Hat / Fedora :: SELinux Is Preventing The Samba Daemon From Reading Users' Home Directories

Sep 1, 2010

My Fedora box is giving me an SELinux security error:

Code: Summary:

SELinux is preventing the samba daemon from reading users' home directories.

Detailed Description:

SELinux has denied the samba daemon access to users' home directories. Someone
is attempting to access your home directories via your samba daemon. If you only
setup samba to share non-home directories, this probably signals an intrusion
attempt. For more information on SELinux integration with samba, look at the

Allowing Access: If you want samba to share home directories you need to turn on the

Fedora Servers :: Samba Shares Not Accessible?

Jan 5, 2009

I'm having some troubles with my samba shares on a fresh install of Fedora 10 x86_64 on my laptop. The laptop has only the KDE Desktop environment. I'm trying to share between this computer and my homebrew server via a wrt54g linksys router running DD-WRT firmware. The server is running Fedora 9 i386.

The shares on the server can be read by the laptop, and I have been consistently able to mount the server shares on the laptop using mount.cifs, but only when the firewall on the server is down. Shares are only visible between the machines when the firewall is down on the machine containing the share. I set up the shares using the system-config-samba tool, and the firewalls are both set to allow samba server and samba client. I can typically see the laptop from the server, but not the shares, and only when the laptop firewall is disabled. I can access the Laptop shares from the laptop. When trying to mount the laptop shares on the server, a warning message stating that the mount failed appears. Shares show up as correct in both the system-config-samba tool, and the KDE sharing tools. The share shows a "shared" icon in the dolphin browser.

From all that I know, the shares should work perfectly. I've searched the web, perused the man pages and how-to's, and combed through the forums, and everything I've found tells me that the shares should be working. Since they are not working, it leads me to believe that I must have made a mistake someone and not noticed it.

Fedora Servers :: Config - Can't Seem To Get Samba Working

I'd really like to get this going as I'd like to copy files from my XP Pro box to my Linux box (F9). I have WinSCP, but am having permission issues and I can only copy to a folder on my desktop on the Linux box (I'd like to get this fixed too, but that's a different thread at a later time)
