clean install of Slackware 13.1 64-bit. From day 1 I have been unable to browse Samba servers and shares on my home network. NFS, FTP, SSH, etc all seem to be working fine. I've been updating it regularly in case this was a bug, but I'm not so sure any more.
Reboot in WinXP sp3, I can browse fine. My wife's Win7 laptop works fine. My old Slack 12.2 system worked fine. I have not made any changes to the network other than adding this computer to the mix.

I've set up smbd 3.4.7 on 10.04x64 LTS server. I've set up a couple shares and I'm having problems blocking access to certain directories using native file permissions. There is one directory that has folders for each sales rep to store their current list of quoted clients, I only want sales people to be able to browse the directories owned by themselves. Everything seems to be set up correctly in terms of user groups and permissions on the filesystem.
Below is marina, a sales rep, and brian, a super user of sorts. id marina: Code: uid=1011(marina) gid=1006(office) groups=1006(office),1005(sales) id nick: Code: uid=1000(brian) gid=1006(office) groups=1006(office),118(admin),1001(full),1002(processing),1003(management),1004(it),1005(sales)
Below is the directory with all the sales reps folders. ls -la: Code: total 60 drwxrwxr-x 15 root it 4096 2011-02-10 20:06 . drwxr-x--- 9 root office 4096 2010-11-19 12:40 .. drwxrwx--- 13 katya full 4096 2010-12-07 12:36 Katya drwxrwx--- 18 lana full 4096 2011-02-08 17:09 Lana drwxrwx--- 23 marina full 4096 2011-02-10 18:09 Marina drwxrwx--- 4 mike full 4096 2011-02-01 12:42 Mike
With this setup marina only be able to browse her folder, but she can browse all folders and has full write access to all folders. This leads me to believe something is up with the smbd.conf file, which is below.
Code: [global] workgroup = COMTREAD null passwords = no server string = Root Server dns proxy = no log file = /var/log/samba/log.%m max log size = 1000 syslog = 0 .....
In this case the valid users directive would not work cause I am not making a share for each user. I had this on other shares like the db2 share. My windows box lagged heavily when I tried to access that share with an invalid user. How to deny users the ability to modify permissions I would also like to do that.
I am looking into encrypting some data on a Fedora samba server. I'm not entirely sure the best way to do this. The server is currently running Fedora 5 but it can be updated if necessary.
I would prefer if the server could be booted up and that no interaction at the server itself have to be done so that users can access their shares.
Is there a way for the data to be encrypted on the server but when the user access the share over samba that it can be accessed?
The research i have done so far seems to point towards methods more intended for a desktop setup. Such as entering passwords at bootup or when opening folders.
Linux and have a western digital server (my book world edition) I can access it with Ubuntu 11.04, just by downloading Samba and then by clicking on network and the server shows up, but with Fedora 15, after I have installed Samba, I click on network and all that shows up is my router?
I can browse, add and delete files on my fc13-64 machine from windows xp or vista. But not from the fc13-64 machine to or from any of the windows machines. I have installed samba, smb and nmb are running (reliably) selinux is disabled and the firewall is on; although i have noticed with it off I can't browse in either direction. Can't browse windows with samba but can browse samba with windows, is a problem I overcame with fc-12 but I can't remember how.

I want to use samba for file sharing like on a Windows home network. Actually they are all Linux machines but nfs is too complicated. On my host machine I installed samba and system-config-samba. I created a new share for /home, check marked writable and visible and put access to everybody. For preferences-->server settings--> security the "authentication mode" is set to user, encrypt passwords is no, and guest account is no guest account. Under preferences-->samba users I added myself as a user with the same windows user name as my Linux user name and the same password.
My client is a virtualbox fedora (used for testing purposes but actual clients will be real computers on my home network). I entered the address smb://192.168.1.184. When asked for the user name and password I put my regular user name and password since that was what I set in samba users. However, the password dialog keeps coming up and won't let met into my own computer. If I quit it says something like access is denied. How can I get my home network back? I liked this feature when my home computers ran XP but I switched them to Fedora 12.
At work, using SambaKerberos and ActiveDirectoryWinbindHowto, I joined my machine to our ADS network. Again using ActiveDirectoryWinbindHowto, I modified both common-account and common-auth with these settings.
According the the doc, when I first log in as a domain user, it should create the home directiroy /home/<whateverdomain>/<theusername>, but it doesn't.
Samba is remotely administered with webmin and aim to setup home directory sharing. I am however having some trouble getting this to work.
I was of the understanding that home directory sharing allows me to create a user in ubuntu, which samba will then pickup and offer it up as a share.
My smb.conf looks like this..
Code: #======================= Global Settings ======================= [global] unix extensions = no share modes = no security = user
[Code]....
Essentially I've found this works providing I give the samba user a password after it is automatically created using the 'Configure automatic Unix and Samba user synchronisation' option in webmin.
However if I move the location of this home folder off the main drive i.e. /home/username I get turned away at attempted login.
I've tried specifying the path in [homes] using the path = /media/discarray, but this seems to break authentication somehow.
I just setup an application (phpcollab) on a linux machine, I was able to browse the app using localhost, but each time i try browsing it using the ip address, a blank page loads with a message saying "No input specified".
Whenever I try browsing the app from other systems on the network, I get a page cannot be found error message even though the other machines are successfully pinging the linux machine's ip address.
I need to browse it with the ip address because the app is to be accessed from other machines on the network.
I wish to prevent the samba messages (mainly nmbd and winbindd) from appearing in the system log (/var/log/messages). I want to allow samba logging to the standard samba logfiles, but prevent the syslog getting clogged up by samba. I added syslog = 0 to smb.conf and reloaded the config but the messages were still appearing. I also tried the following (and restarted the syslog via /sbin/service syslog restart) # Suppress messages from samba.
For interests sake the messages I'm getting are below (I'm not concerned about the messages themselves, I can chase them up at my leisure via the samba logs) Mar 18 09:58:29 SERVER nmbd[3808]: query_name_response: Multiple (2) responses received for a query on subnet xx.yy.z.zz for name DOMAIN<1d>. Mar 18 09:58:29 SERVER nmbd[3808]: This response was from IP xx.yy.z.zz, reporting an IP address of xx.yy.z.zz.
I am running samba 3.5.8-74 on Fedora 14. I can connect to it from several Windoze XP machines by typing the ip address or searching for the computer name. However, when browsing the workgroup from XP, the share does not show up. I also can not see the share from my new WD TV Live Plus. I suspect the two problems are related.
I have disabled my firewall to insure that it is not in the way, but no change. I have set up samba users to match my XP users, and numerous other attempts at modifying smb.conf to get it to work, but to no avail.
Here is my smb.conf file--
# This is the main Samba configuration file. For detailed information about the # options listed here, refer to the smb.conf(5) manual page. Samba has a huge # number of configurable options, most of which are not shown in this example. # # The Official Samba 3.2.x HOWTO and Reference Guide contains step-by-step
I'm looking for an easy guide to connect to my home network with Fedora 12. So far I did what I thought was pretty straight forward but I'm not seeing any computers. Here is what I've done
yum install samba restart system settings -> advanced -> samba
I set up my two paths that I wanted to be shared when I go to network in Dolphin I'm seeing Network, Network Services and Samba Shares If I click on Network nothing shows, same with Network services, samba shares shows nothing and the bottom reads "unable to find any workgroups on your local network. This might be caused by an enabled firewall"
There are two workgroups which my Ubuntu machine shows fine, workgroup and mshome, I can connect to my roomates and my girlfriends computer no problem within Ubuntu (they are running XP, Vista and Ubuntu).
I wanted to setup a Samba share on a box running Ubuntu 10.4 and share it to Windows 7 computers throughout my house. When I browse the Network (thru Windows), I can see "Media Devices" that correspond with the locations of where I will put the media. The problem is that I have been unable to copy the media to the Ubuntu server because I cannot see the Ubuntu "computer" from Windows 'Network'.
All computers are on the same Workgroup
Running the following command line from Windows returns no errors and lists the samba share:
Using the testparm command on my smb.conf returns only one error (which previous googling seems to indicate is not an issue). The following is what was returned by the command:
I used the command sudo chmod 0750 /home/Gianni to make my home folder private. Now, I would like that another user in my pc can read files in a subdirectory of my home. I was running several commands with chmod and chown and I tried with Nautilus too, but without success. I just would like to place a link on the second user's desktop, that he can click on and access my subdirectory.
I had a box running 9.04 that I upgraded to 9.10 and I cannot print or browse to shared drives from my iMac. I have several other Macs and PCs that work fine. This was the first that I setup to print on 9.04. I have attempted everything that I can find including installing in CUPS, using the ip address, etc. I can browse to workgroup and I see the computer but when I try to use either USERID guest or userid/passwd - I get no response.
I looked in the /var/log/samba for this computer and here is what I am getting for an attempt: [2010/02/04 12:09:08, 1] ../librpc/ndr/ndr.c:374(ndr_pull_error) ndr_pull_error(11): ndr_pull_advance by 469762046 failed [2010/02/04 12:09:08, 1] ../librpc/ndr/ndr.c:374(ndr_pull_error) ndr_pull_error(11): Pull bytes 2 [2010/02/04 12:09:08, 0] rpc_server/srv_pipe.c:2332(api_rpcTNP) api_rpcTNP: srvsvc: SRVSVC_NETSHAREENUMALL failed.
I have a home network with Ubuntu (3 PC) Windows (XP 3, 7 1 vista 1) and Lacie networked drive. I have successfully edited fstab to mount the lacie drive at startup on my main ubuntu PC and it works a treat. My problem is setting up the Unbutu PCs to browse the workgroup. This was working but now (since my last update of Unbutu I think) I get prompted for a password and no matter what I do it does not let me browse.
Now I have read a few things on Samba and do not have the time or ability to become a network engineer. All I want to do is is have on my Ubuntu the same browsing ability that seems to come out of the box in Windows.
My Fedora box is giving me an SELinux security error:
Code: Summary:
SELinux is preventing the samba daemon from reading users' home directories.
Detailed Description:
SELinux has denied the samba daemon access to users' home directories. Someone is attempting to access your home directories via your samba daemon. If you only setup samba to share non-home directories, this probably signals an intrusion attempt. For more information on SELinux integration with samba, look at the samba_selinux man page. (man samba_selinux)
Allowing Access: If you want samba to share home directories you need to turn on the samba_enable_home_dirs boolean: "setsebool -P samba_enable_home_dirs=1"
I installed samba server in my external HDD. But it is not shown in system ----> Administration. Is there any problem. Then How to give permission to access home folder.
Automatic upgrade ver 10 to 11 Have a large drive that is shared over Windows domain. This was renamed from /media/drive/ to /media/7534179143A7E34 All the users in Windows domain can not access the files or folders on the Fedora server - Samba setup. Why was the deive renamed and is this causing problems. I reshared the folders on the drive but still cannot access the drive. Where do I start to fault find please.
I'm having some troubles with my samba shares on a fresh install of Fedora 10 x86_64 on my laptop. The laptop has only the KDE Desktop environment. I'm trying to share between this computer and my homebrew server via a wrt54g linksys router running DD-WRT firmware. The server is running Fedora 9 i386.
The shares on the server can be read by the laptop, and I have been consistently able to mount the server shares on the laptop using mount.cifs, but only when the firewall on the server is down. Shares are only visible between the machines when the firewall is down on the machine containing the share. I set up the shares using the system-config-samba tool, and the firewalls are both set to allow samba server and samba client. I can typically see the laptop from the server, but not the shares, and only when the laptop firewall is disabled. I can access the Laptop shares from the laptop. When trying to mount the laptop shares on the server, a warning message stating that the mount failed appears. Shares show up as correct in both the system-config-samba tool, and the KDE sharing tools. The share shows a "shared" icon in the dolphin browser.
From all that I know, the shares should work perfectly. I've searched the web, perused the man pages and how-to's, and combed through the forums, and everything I've found tells me that the shares should be working. Since they are not working, it leads me to believe that I must have made a mistake someone and not noticed it.
I've read through these pages [URL] but can't seem to get Samba server working. I am using Gnome and I go to System - Administration - Services
In there I can see smb and nmb. Both are enabled, but both have a status of unknown. I can't seem to start or stop either of them. I can just enable or disable them. I've tried using the gui, as well as command line.
I'd really like to get this going as I'd like to copy files from my XP Pro box to my Linux box (F9). I have WinSCP, but am having permission issues and I can only copy to a folder on my desktop on the Linux box (I'd like to get this fixed too, but that's a different thread at a later time)
I've been running a F10 based Samba Server a few months without trouble. Now, after an update, samba is not working any more. When I try to start it manually, it reports the following error:
I have it set right now to be open so that there's no need to type in username and password information. It works great. I can type \*IP Address* on my WinXP laptop while on the network, and it brings me to the Public folder that I'm trying to share. But, when I click on the folder to open it up, it just sits there and eventually will give a userid/password prompt or will give me an access denied error.
When i try to create a new samba user the computer locks up and i get this message. can someone help me out. TB08997608 connection.py:630:call_blockingBusException: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.Spawn.ChildExited: Launch helper exited with unknown return code 1
So I've set up a Samba server through the gui. When I've labeled my shares as accessible to everyone, I can get to it no problem. However, when I tie it down to a specific samba user, I can't.
By all indications, it appears that it isn't saving the password because every time I go to edit users, it has the exact same string in the password field.
When I try to add a user to samba (using the GNOME UI) in F12, after enter all the information and click OK.it will just hang for about 20 seconds, and then do nothing. Window is still there, I click OK again and same thing.heres the steps i followed:
1) click preferences, Samba Users... 2) click add user 3) select user "joe" (example) from drop down of users 4) enter "joe" windows user name 5) enter password for joe (same as user password) 6) click OK 7) hangs 20 seconds then nothing.window is still there.click OK again same thing no user added
I've done this before, maybe ten times. This time is different. I don't know why, but Samba will not allow any clients to connect.
I've done: - installed samba - setup the samba shares - have a samba user/passwd - authentication = users - punched in the samba stuff for firewall - workgroup is set right
What the heck? I cannot get any client to connect. Not even the server machine can connect to itself through a client. What am I missing here???
Just for the record, I'm trying to connect to \SERVER:
Code:
Code:
I removed a whole lot of comment lines in the config file.
I wan't whatever file/folder that ends up in the public folder to automaticly be open to whosoever access that folder. Right know I have to "chmod -R 777 file/folder.* "
