Jun 17, 2011I searched and only got the screen program, and the drop down menu only shows options from 1 min to 1 hour.

View 6 RepliesIf I turn off the monitors, I get a black screen (the monitors goes to power save) when I turn them on again.
I have a workaround which involves pressing ctrl-alt and f3 and then ctrl-alt f7. That usually works and brings up the graphical login-screen. And I get my session back.
But sometimes when I log in, my session is gone. It is as if I was logged out or the system has rebooted.
I have two monitors and Nvidia.
I regularly use 2 monitors at 2 different locations. Booting Ubuntu on monitor 1 works great. Booting with monitor 2 connected causes Ubuntuto load with really low resolution. If Ubuntu is running and I unplug monitor 1 and connect monitor 2 all is well and it works perfectly. How can I tell Ubuntu not to check/change the display settings during boot so that it will work correctly with monitor 2?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently changed linux distros and switched to Karmic. In my earlier setup /home was on a separate partition.
After switching to karmic I added the following line to /etc/fstab to mount my /home partition which was on /dev/sda6 (ubuntu is on /dev/sda7) /dev/sda6 /home ext3 nodev, nosuid 0 2
After rebooting I saw that while earlier I had an empty desktop now my desktop shows the content of my home folder.
On googling I found out about how I could change the nautilus preferences.
I used gconf-editor to change: apps>nautlius>preferences>desktop_is_home_dir to false
I also changed: apps>nautlius>desktop>volumes_visible to false.
However on rebooting I still see all the contents of my home folder on the desktop.
What do I need to do to show the Desktop as blank (as in point to ~/Desktop rather than point to ~)?
I want to install ATLAS on my laptop to do this i have to turn of cpu throttling.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI downloaded the *.iso for a Fedora 10 Live KDE installation. It is currently on my hard drive. I tried burning it to a CD with Roxio using two different methods. The first one was not a bootable method. So I checked the Roxio documentation and burned the image that way. In burning an *.iso to a bootable image on a disc, Roxio asks for three different file types, none of which are *.iso. I selected my *.iso because that was all I had. Then I burned it as a bootable to a CD.
When I tried to boot it, I got a black screen with a message at the top left reading something like there was no operating system available. I thought that was strange, and I do not know what to do.
I am looking to turn off Plasma Workspace and keep it off! Today I was informed by a family member that their desktop had drastically changed. After investigating this, I had noticed that they were now running what was called Plasma Workspace. I am truly baffled right now as to how this was activated/turned on for only 1 out of 5 users on my computer. None of them are computer savvy, so it would also help me out considerably if I knew how this was turned on without the use of the terminal.
View 4 Replies View RelatedIm trying to maximize my network connectivity. To do this I have begun using the program ethtool. The first thing I did was run
Code:
#ethtool eth0
which informed me Im running 10BaseT mode. So i though, ok, that has to do with the autoneg right?
so I ran:
Code:
# ethtool -s eth0 speed 1000 duplex full autoneg off
[Code]...
LOLz, I got it now, This computer has 2 nics installed! Thats why the link stat was "Link detected: no"
I moded my code to pertain to eth1, the connected port. Eh, anyhow, Im still not sold on this problem being solved, the connection eth1 seems to work fine at 100BaseT/Full but I loose connectivity when trying to use 1000BaseT/Full despite the nic showing it as a supported mode.
Under Gnome2 you were able to stop the OS from turning off the screen by selecting "never" as the time to turn off the display when the computer was idle. This was found under the screensaver configuration. The screen tool for Gnome3 does not offer "never" as an option. Does anyone know how to stop Fedora 15/Gnome 3 from turning off the display?
View 14 Replies View RelatedI did not have any /etc/X11/xorg.conf, so I read on these forums that system-config-display would create one for me. I ran system-config-display and it created an xorg.conf. But now my display is all messed up!! So, I deleted the xorg.conf and nothing changed. Why on earth would the display still be messed up if I deleted the file that was causing it?? Does system-config-display change somethign else?

The problem is when watching a video F15 Gnome decides to send me to the unlock screen. Think that's what it's called. So I have to type in my pass.

I'll spare the details, but is there a way to use iptables to do the following:
Allow all port 80 traffic to work for squid, yum ,etc. but prevent firefox from talking to port 80?
(That way if they don't use squid proxy, it won't work)

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am running a sever for a local community. There is arpwatch service running and monitoring for new network cards. The problem is that each day I keep getting lots of 'flip flop' reports:
Code:
hostname: <unknown>
ip address: 0.0.0.0
ethernet address: 0:13:e8:43:b1:e7
[code]....
I know where they come from: clients are obtaining ip addresses by DHCP, and initially are sending DHCP requests from 0.0.0.0. I am running arpwatch with a specific option to NOT report such things, but it looks like it is ignored...
Code:
arpwatch -u arpwatch -e admin -N -s 'root (Arpwatch)' -i br0 -n 0.0.0.0/32

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm doing a research to protect my pc from physical access. What I'm facing here is that my company created a program for fedora 8 and plans to sell the unit away. We created a function where you can configure the program using any web browser from a network so we do not want anybody to have access to the fedora except for out personnel.
Based on my research, I've found [URL] this guide to protect people from accessing grub and single user. I am currently researching on preventing others to clone the harddisk. I would like to know if there are any other methods to prevent people from unauthorized access to fedora.

How do I prevent eth1 from being able to overwrite the default gateway that eth0 has already set?!? I read that one can create route-* files in the /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ directory to setup static default routes. But those seems to require one to know the IP address of the gateway, but in my case the ISP's gateway is served via DHCP and so it could vary from day to day. Here are the contents of some of the relevant files:

I have a Canon 450D which only supports PTP mode, not USB mass storage mode. When I connect it, it gets automounted and I can browse it with Nautilus. However, when it is mounted for browsing, gThumb cannot access it.To import the photos using gThumb, I have to manually unmount it from Nautilus. Is there a way I can prevent this camera from being automounted? I don't want to disable all USB automounting, because I also use various USB flash disks which I want to be automounted.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI am currently waiting about 10min already for Fedora to finish downloading whatever-it-is-it-downloads after issuing a simple 'Query'. This is bearable when my BB-connection is performing. Unfortunately, like right now, it isn't - between 10-50kB/s - and the wait is excruciating!
So, why does Fedora seem to download the complete files database at least once every 24hrs if there's an update/query issued, and not just the 'differences'? And how do I prevent it from doing so? Ubuntu arguably has access to many more files but never pulls this stuff. Fedora would appear to be completely unusable without a broadband connection! And in the time it has taken me to type this, Fedora continues to download its update at a rate of 10-30kB/s...

View 2 Replies View RelatedI added an sshfs entry fto /etc/fstab in a fresh FC15 build ona laptop and this seems to work
sshfs#user@server:/opt/apache-tomcat-7.0.2/webapps/ /mnt/server/opt/apache-tomcat-7.0.2/webapps/ fuse uid=500,gid=500,allow_other 0 0
I can mount and umount /mnt/server/opt/apache-tomcat-7.0.2/webapps/ without problems.
But after a reboot the systme it hangs when loading, I can't copy paste the messages but it said something about boot dependencies, and it was apparent the error was loading fstab. I had to Ctrl D or enter root password to get a recovery system, after commenting out the sshfs line (and some nfs lines too) from /etc/fstab after another reboot I was in.
sshfs used to be permitted in /etc/fstab it seems , I've not used it before, could this be a FC15 issue? I have seen other threads about FC15 and nfs boot issues presumably to do with the new booting mechanism.
