OpenSUSE Install :: Resize Or Move Root Partition
Jan 6, 2011During install process I assigned only 6GB for my root partition and now I'm almost running out of space. I have 11.1 installed and I wanted to update to 11.3 but there are problems with i855 video card with newest distro versions so I won't install it. Since everything is installed and configured I don't want to install 11.1 again.

Jan 9, 2010I just wanted to post this in case it helps anyone else. I have all my personal files (photos, documents, etc.) saved on a separate ext3 partition (so I don't have to worry about them on new installs, etc.). When I tried to delete files, however, I always received the message: "Cannot move file to trash, do you want to delete immediately?".
After much searching and failed fix attempts (mostly unnecessary messing with fstab), I found this post, which is now archived (or I would have replied there):ttp://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=759544. And frediE's solution, with a couple tiny modifications, finally solved the problem! (So huge thanks to frediE! ). irst, I found my user id, which is 1000, by going to the System > Administration > Users and Groups menu, selecting my user name (e.g. jnewm), clicking "Properties", andselecting "Advanced".
Second, I created a folder on the root of my partition called ".Trash-1000". (I may have needed to use "gksu nautilus" from a terminal to create the folder, I don't recall.)Third and last, I navigated to the root of the partition in my terminal and ran: sudo chown -R jnewm:jnewm .Trash-1000. Followed by: sudo chmod -R jnewm .Trash-1000 (I doubt this second step was necessary, but I'm listing it just in case). (confirmed unnecessary)
Software :: Convert Primary Partition To Logical (ie Move It Inside The Extended Partition)?
Nov 29, 2010Around 2008 i seem to remember PartEd on the command-line was able to rescue deleted partitions and gave a choice of whether to recover the partition as a Primary or Logical Partition. I have tried testdisk but didn't really grok what i was doing. I successfully moved a "Windows Recovery" partition to the end of my hard-drive, immediately after the drive's Extended Partition.

May 8, 2010I don't know if this is possible however would like to know how to move grub from one partition to another.I may not have explainded that very well. I have a computer that i use to checkout different linux distros, however since the introduction of grub2 things have become difficult. I have a number of primary partitions on the one hdd If I install a o/s that uses grub on a partition and another partition has a o/s that uses grub2 then on startup the o/s with grub2 no longer appears on the grub start up screen so I cannot boot into the grub2 o/s. The reverse is ok i.e. if I install a grub2 o/s after a grub o/s all appear on the grub start up screen.
This leaves me in the situation where I have to always reinstall a grub2 o/s after i install a grub o/s. Hope that makes sense! This is why it would be easier (I hope) to be able to move grub from one o/s to another. I must admit I don't really understand it all that well and I know that mbr plays a role in it, however I think it's correct that the mbr can remain on an o/s yet grub is on another?

Feb 5, 2011So I install Ubuntu 10.10 on a multi-drive, dual boot with windows 7 computer. At almost the end of the install, I see "running grub-install sda" or whatever it is. sda is my windows drive.So rather than asking where to install the bootloader or give you the option like it used to, it just did it to my "first" drive.
What the hell? Now my Windows MBR is gone. I like to maintain that so if my linux drive dies I can still boot into windows via the old windows boot loader.Possible to move Grub2 to my other drive and repair windows 7 drive MBR?

Jul 23, 2011I have a raid array using mdadm made up of two drives. The drives have two parts, the first for boot information and the 2nd for LVM. Everything but /boot is under LVM management. Originly the two drives were hooked up to a sata controller in a computer with no on-board sata. However I was not able to get the computer to boot to a sata drive off of that controller. So there was an IDE drive with the MBR that loaded grub.
Now the computer in that setup seems to have died. So the drives were moved to another computer with an on-board sata controller and now the bootup works as far as getting to the grub menu. However after the grub menu the error message "Cannot find root device"
I found the boot info script [URL].. note at the time that was run the computer was running with one drive that has a full Debian install with the raid drive in question mounted and chrooted into. The script was ran from the chroot envirment.[URL]..

Now I'm trying under the live CD and grub-install ... but I'm being told it can't find the device even though /dev/sda2 (root partition) and /dev/sda are mounted.I have 4 discs, each with a swap partition (/dev/sdX1) and a root partition (/dev/sdX2).

Partition table entries are not in disk order So, I didn't want to do anything and screw things up. I want to boot with grub and not MBR. What should I do?
Ubuntu :: Grub2 On Partition (not MBR)
Jan 20, 2010I tried searching for this both in the forums and on google but it seems that everything goes back to MBR installation. I know that "grub-install /dev/sda1" should install it to the sda1 partition, but instead of installing it keeps giving me the following error:

I tried this with a fresh installation of Karmic on both of my PCs. I tried with --recheck option as well, same error. Installing it to MBR works fine, but I don't want it there, have another bootloader chainloading grub. Every single guide I found installs GRUB2 to MBR, and some briefly reference to "grub-install /dev/sdaX" without going into any detail. At first I thought the problem was because Ubuntu was installed on a logical partition, so I created a separate /boot partition and formatted it as ext2, still getting the same problem.
General :: No Space On Root After Large Move Operation?
Feb 16, 2010I tried to move 2.7TB of data from my /var/webroot/ partition (4.5TB total in size). I left it to run over night, this morning when I came to check I saw that all data on / paratition is used up and no operations can be done because of the "no space left on device" message.

Ubuntu :: Move /var And /tmp To One Partition?
Mar 24, 2010I have installed Ubuntu 9.10 Server on a flash based USB memory stick, so I wanted to move /var and /tmp to a partition on a hard drive (one partition with both /var and /tmp and symlinks from / to those). I read this guide here [URL].. but it failed after restarting the server. I then found out that ubuntu must have /var/run on the root file system [URL].. so that was why it did not work.
My workaround for this was to create /var and /var/run on the root file system, mount my partition to /var and then symlink /tmp to /var/temp. It now works as I wanted, both /var and /tmp on the same partition. But is there a better way to solve this? Can there be any problems with /tmp->/var/temp?

Mar 22, 2010I have a Netbook Remix install on an SD card that won't boot. Grub2 in the recovery mode shows it fails finding the root files by using UUID. It's my first Grub2 install and I'm not sure how to go about debugging it. The machine boots the same version from a USB stick.

Jun 8, 2010I initially installed SuSe11.2 with /tmp mounted on separate partition on another physical disk( there are two physical disks). Now I want to attach disk with existing SuSe11.2 to another motherboard so I would like that /tmp becomes part of the root partition. Will deleting /tmp mount point in /etc/fstab create automatically new /tmp from root at next startup, or something else has to be done to achieve, that in future, /tmp resides on root partition instead? In this way it would be much easier to move the disk with SuSe11.2 to another motherboard.

I have partitioner available to me but how do I change the partition size when the root partition is mounted. Do I login as root and then umount or modify fstab and restart and change from command line or do I format and reinstall everything? I have room to expand but not sure how to manage this?

Jun 4, 2010I recently made the migration from mbox to maildir.I use postfix, spamassassin, dovecot for imap and procmail for delivery.I made the changes for Maildir to postfix main.cf, dovecot's dovecot.conf and procmail's procmailrc.All good, working well.Just noticed though, that mail marked as spam and filtered by procmail to be put in the users ~/Maildir/.spam/new folder are owned by root. Not allowing the users to even see it (600 perms)
So postfix sends all mail to Procmail:
mailbox_command = procmail -a "$EXTENSION"
But not all mail is effected, only mail picked up by this receipe in the /etc/procmailrc:

CentOS 5 :: Need To Move Space From Root File System To Swap
Apr 7, 2009I currently have a server with the default VolGroup00 that contains logical volumes for the root file system and swap using logical volumes LogVol00 (root) and LogVol01 (swap.) I need to take space from LogVol00 and move it to LogVol01. I have found documentation for increasing the swap, and the resizing the logical volumes. However in the documentation and the man pages it says that I have to reduce the size of teh file system on the logical volume I am going to shrink. I have found documentation resizing the logical volumes but not the file systems.

My partitioning looks like this and my install is still completing:
sda1=/boot
sda2=/
sda3=swap
sda4=/home
My old home partition and data is located in a partition that I preserved, called /homebak and is on sdb.
Once my install is complete, what is the best way to move the data from /sdb1 (homebak) to my newly created /home?
For the record, I tried to copy the partition during set-up, but something wasn't happy.
I've got my important files backed-up, but would prefer not to lose about 5 gigs of music and video.
Debian Configuration :: /tmp Move To A Different Partition
Jun 13, 2011I got a mistake during my installation on my server. I put the "/tmp" folder to the 2nd disk without thinking. My 2nd disk has only this folder and partition. How can I move the "/tmp" folder to my first disk in a different partition safely? It would be great if I won't destroy the server.
I would like to do the following:
1. move "/tmp" to disk 1 (sda). I will resize the "/home" partition(reduce) and put the "/tmp" there.
2. I will put "/backup" on the disk.
General :: Move Partition In GParted?
Apr 10, 2010The following is a screenshot of GParted run on my system. There is a small unallocated space at the beginning of the list. This 1 MiB space is kind of annoying and I'd like to merge with any other partition except /dev/sda1, /dev/sda6 and /dev/sda4. When I right click on the unallocated partition, the only available operation is "New". And, if I click on "New", I get the following error message.
It is not possible to create more than 4 primary partitions

General :: Move The Srv Directory To Another Partition?
Jun 28, 2010When installing Ubuntu (10.04) I chose the /home to be installed in a separate partition.I would now like to move the /srv directory into the same partition. The problem I found is that Ubuntu did not make a /home directory inside the partition itself. It just places the account directories in the partition and mounts it to /home. So I cannot just easily move the /srv folder into the partition.
How can I:
Move those account directories into a home folder inside the partition Make that new home folder the default /home folder. ditto with the /srv folder, or any I choose in the future.

May 5, 2010I'm trying to move the /var/www dir to another partition (another hard drive even, though I doubt that makes a difference) because my file system partition is rather small. But when I do I get "403 -forbidden" and in the logs "Permission denied: /home/www/.htaccess pcfg_openfile: unable to check htaccess file, ensure it is readable". If I move it anywhere within the partition (and adjust the conf) I don't get this problem. Using Ubuntu 10.04 Desktop x64. I haven't had any problems with this in earlier Ubuntu-versions.

I was wondering if there would be a possible way to backup my 10.04 install and move it to an existing, unused ext3 partition. I tried moving the /usr to another partition and using a symbolic link but that didn't work so i'm trying (and would prefere this method anyway) to use fstab to do it
