Ubuntu Installation :: Reinstall Grub2 To Root Directory

I was dual booting Ubuntu and Windows, had to reinstall Windows, it wiped out grub, need to reinstall it now. Was following this: [URL]
Trying to reinstall grub with:

Partition table entries are not in disk order So, I didn't want to do anything and screw things up. I want to boot with grub and not MBR. What should I do?

My friend recently re-installed WinXP on his laptop, but I'm having trouble getting Grub2 working. I followed a guide online, but when I booted it back up again, I got a Grub prompt instead of a boot menu.

I have a dual boot system. I need dual boot as my dictation software is only available for Windows. In the future I am going to try a virtual machine, but dictation and audio did not work properly the last time I tried in VM. But unfortunately for now I have a dual boot machine with Vista and Debian 6. Unfortunately, I am going to have to reinstall Vista. Or to be more accurate I'm going to install the 64-bit version instead of the 32 bit that came with the computer. I have the 64-bit version that I no longer use from one of my other computers.
Anyway, I have to install Windows which will overwrite my grub2. Is there anyway I can make a backup or reinstall grub2 after I install Windows. I really don't want to reinstall Debian 6 squeeze. Can they make some sort of a backup of gurb2 before I do this. I checked out the Internet and I found something called Super Grub2. It apparently will allow me to boot back into Debain 6 so that I can install grub2 again. Assuming, Super Grub2 even works then how do I reinstall grub2 once a boot into Debian 6? Has anybody tried Super grub2, does it work? It's kind of hard to test it, with a working version of grub2.

How can I restore or reinstall GRUB2 from squeeze installation? I tried various suggestions from various online articles (most of them for ubuntu), but I couldn't find a solution. Is there any solution, specifically for Debian? GRUB reinstallation from install cd, didn't worked as well. Since I couldn't boot at all, I restored GRUB1 and I'm posting from Lenny, but I can't access Squeeze this way (probably because I have squeeze's partition, ext4 formatted).

I have been out of the Linux loop for a while. Prior to the holidays I did something 'stupid' within Wine and ended up taking out my Ubuntu partition to the point where it wouldn't boot. Being that I have a triple boot system and I had plans for the holidays, I didn't want to risk a reinstall in the event that if something went wrong with Grub, it would render my whole system useless. So I waited until now to reinstall Ubuntu. I performed the reinstall this past weekend and for the most part I thought everything went fine, but I noticed something was different with the file system.
When I attempted to load a 3.5gig program into Ubuntu yesterday, I got an error message saying that I don't have enough disk space. I said to my self, "That is impossible as I have a 106gig partition for programs". I have a separated system in which Ubuntu /root has an 8gig partition and the Home partition supposed to be the 106gig drive. I did this in the event I had to reinstall, I wouldn't loose my information. Well apparently something went wrong with the install and it appears that I have two Home folders...one is on the 106gig drive and the other is in the root directory.
Making note of that explained why my program wouldn't load because the root partition is only 8gig. So, my question is this: Can I set Ubuntu back to the old Home directory, or do I have to reinstall once again? As what under my avatar says, I am on Ubuntu Studio 8.04 (Hardy Heron). I stuck with this older version because it has long term support. I have a triple boot system with Windows XP, Puppy Linux, and Ubuntu Studio. I have two SATA 500gig drives with the first drive being home to all the operating systems and programs. The second drive is just for data.
Here is my fdisk -l I put the partitions usage in parenthesis:

I'm trying to install GRUB2 on root partition under RAID 5. I tried using the alternate CD, but installation failed. Now I'm trying under the live CD and grub-install ... but I'm being told it can't find the device even though /dev/sda2 (root partition) and /dev/sda are mounted.I have 4 discs, each with a swap partition (/dev/sdX1) and a root partition (/dev/sdX2).

I have a Netbook Remix install on an SD card that won't boot. Grub2 in the recovery mode shows it fails finding the root files by using UUID. It's my first Grub2 install and I'm not sure how to go about debugging it. The machine boots the same version from a USB stick.

Ok. I have a media server running debian amd64. when I installed it I made separate partitions for root (/) home (/home) var (/var) and swap.
I'm adding some new hardware (mobo and ram) and want to reinstall debian. I would like to keep my home and var partitions intact and just reinstall everything in root (/) partition.
I'm unsure of how to do this during the installation. Do i need to format? how do I tell it to use the /var and /home partitions?

I want to reinstall windows to its partition on my computer, but I want to be able to restore grub2 afterwards. I use a lot of custom scripts in the /etc/grub.d/ directory on my ubuntu partition, so how can I reinstall grub to the MBR using those specific scripts? Just running "sudo install-grub" or "sudo update-grub" doesn't work for me (I don't know the exact problems, but I can't reproduce it right now). If there's a way to install just the defaults (without overriding my custom scripts!) maybe I can just do that, but I'd really like to put the live cd, run a few commands, and install those custom scripts to the mbr and be on my way.

I recently (for about the third time) HAD to re-install Windows 7. It just wouldn't boot and unfortunately I have some proprietary software that I need to use. Anyway, this is the first time I've had to do so since installing Lucid (64bit, fresh install). My problem now is, when I re-installed Grub2 (using the same methods that have previously worked flawlessly) to recover it after re-installing windows, only windows shows up in the grub menu, showing options to boot to Windows on sda1 and another to boot to Windows on sda2.
I grabed a "boot info script" from Rubi1200 and this is what I got..

This is closely related to a recent thread of mine that I unfortunately marked as solved prematurely. I'll try to keep it brief this time. After editing partitions I was left with a boot problem, namely "error: no such partition" and I am dropped at the 'grub rescue>' prompt. I can issue the appropriate grub commands and successfully boot the current kernel. Once booted, I executed 'sudo update-grub' and then /boot/grub/grub.cfg was rewritten with all drive and partition references correct. Likewise, /etc/fstab is also correct.
The problem comes when I attempt to reboot. I still get the 'no such partition' message and the 'set' command reveals that grub is still trying to reference the old partition. I've never encountered this problem before under similar circumstances. I'm guessing that this info must be stored in the disk's MBR as well as in grub.cfg because that file looks completely correct. Am I going to have to reinstall grub now?

So I was messing around trying to uninstall Nibbles and reinstall since I have an issue starting that game and something happened and removed the submenu under Games called "Logic", which had another whole list of games.
Is it possible to reinstall the games package or reinstall the update?I'm thinking more of the lines of a system restore or something so back 2 days from today.

Ubuntu(10.04) was working fine, then some program crashed or something, and I just switched off (power offed) the computer. When I restarted it, this sort of stuff comes:

and some more lines like that, and then 'Busybox' starts with [intramfs].I booted Ubuntu from a pen drive and ran fsck on the main partition. I just pressed 'y' for a long time (it asks stuff like should it continue repairing or something), and then it was done. I restarted the pc and it booted normally - it looked as if everything was fine.I started google chrome, and it said it couldn't find a personal config file .. ok. Then I tried opening a folder - nothing happens. The system monitor doesn't open, and windows that do open eventually are completely blank. I restarted the pc (this time by doing the normal restart), and it gave me the same 'Busybox' thing.I did the same procedure again, and got the same results. (ubuntu boots, programs dont work, then I restart and the Busybox thing comes again)One More Thing : The Ubuntu installed on the hard disk had all the recent updates (including the latest linux kernel) while the pen drive thing was around 2 months old I think. So maybe that's the cause?

If I boot on a live-CD, then enter in a terminal the following commands:
sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt
sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt /dev/sda
sudo umount /mnt
..does it install Grub-pc in /dev/sda1 ? even if Grub was already installed in /dev/sda1 ? Furthermore, are the 3 above commands equivalent to the below ones ?
sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt
sudo mount --bind /dev /mnt/dev
sudo mount --bind /sys /mnt/sys[code].....

I updated my lucid alpha testing (64 bit)install after which I am unable to boot into any of my Ubuntu installs(sda11 has a dedicated Burg partition and sda10 has the stable karmic (32 bit)install and sda9 has the testing lucid install) Now I am trying to recover (rewrite Burg or at least grub2 on the MBR) my installs

I keep getting this error during the XP and Linux Ubuntu 9.10 dual boot installation. I have tried many things. Here is the current status of the installation: I have used wubi.exe to install the contents onto the drive. I did not install it onto my windows C: Drive because my Dad does not want to mess with it anymore. We have accidentally blown up Windows Twice trying to dual boot already. So we have another drive in our computer that we have it installed on so we don't mess with Windows. Ok so every time I boot up the computer it goes to the dual boot menu i choose Ubuntu and it tries to finish the installation. Whenever i get to the part where it says "Setting up Partitioner"(Or something like that.), a pop-up appears that says "No root directory is specified. Please correct this from the partitioning menu."
I am pretty sure that the installer is supposed to make the partitions for you. It is impossible to close out the pop-up so i had to hard boot the computer. Then i went into the Linux Ubuntu Demo Mode. I used GPartEd to create the partitions manually. I came across the problem that there were too many partitions on the drive becuase we had some other partitions that we needed on that drive so I had to create an Extended Partition to house the Linux Partitions (For more information on my partition setup, see the bottom of the post.). While still in the Linux Demo I had clicked on the "Install Ubuntu" icon. I got through the first 3 steps (The steps where it askes for Language, location, etc.) After that it went to some setup partitions menu but nothing was on it so i clicked on "Forward" and it said "No root directory is specified. Please correct this from the partitioning menu." That is as far as I am right now.

Doesn't seem to matter which version, every time I try to install Software raid on an Ubuntu server system, it blows up with this error. Seems I've had trouble for several versions.

I've done it on Centos Fine, and followed the many different instructions I've seen for Ubuntu. The only luck I've had was with bios raid, but I would much rather let Mdadm handle things.

I install both as letting Ubuntu decide partitions for one drive, do the same for the other, and create a raid, and do them from scratch. No dice, same problem. I've tried that one as logical and as primary too. No difference. Something just doesn't like booting from a raid 1 Mirror. I've tried installing grub on both HDDs (sda1 + sdb1)I've tried several CDs, burned from several machines. Re-downloaded from Torrent and from the website. The DVD drives work since I purchased new DVD drives for both one workstation and the server. Things install fine under CentOS, software raid comes up.

i initilally installed ubuntu 9.10 then installed windows 7 ,then i recovered grub2 using livecd as told in the post [URL] i did "sudo update-grub" and got windows 7 menu entry but when i select that entry windows 7 does not load but the grub2 is reloaded again.
i cant boot to windows 7.
Windows 7 have 100 mb partition "System Reserved" the grub2 points to that partition but still windows 7 not loaded.

I no longer have access to my root desktop. On a session I attempted to change the root username but i apparently assigned it a wrong directory that does not exist. When I rebooted with my new root username, i was instead recognised as a simple user (no root privileges). I tried the console to change to "old" root but root password is not accepted and there is no way to access to sudoer files. it seems that inserting a new username requires root privileges and i am back to square one. Simply logging with old root username and password after restart gives me a blank screen with nothing on it and cannot even reboot.

I run ProFTPd with TLS authentication on my Debian Lenny server. My problem is that despite of the fact that my users connect chrooted, one of my friends had root privileges after logging in form a Macintosh and could browse the root directory, too.

I'm having trouble since I installed the newest kernel update. I only have one desktop. I unistalled compiz. Then I get the message 'you don't appear to have a window manager installed' I reinstalled compiz, but it gives me a misty screen, with the cube desktop. How do I set compiz to a default setting? Plain and simple? Where is the config file? This may have started when I clicked a box 'enable indirect rendering' just to see what happened. I have an nvidia 9200 card on an Asus laptop.Failing that, how do I reinstall Fed 12 without wiping out my home directory?

I have a machine which has only /opt with some decent amount of space where I can install a software. /opt belongs to root:root. The software I want to install cannot be installed as root user.
So lets say I create a directory called /opt/install1 and then chown -R install1 to belong to user1. And now I install the software under /opt/install1 with user as user1.
Is this a best practice violation? There could potentially be just /opt/install1 belong to user1 and in future everything else created under /opt belonging to root..
