I tried to install grub2 in partition, not in MBR.I have installed grub4dos in MBR, and I prefer to install grub2 in sda6.sda6 is ext3 formated and has Debian squeeze installed on it.

I want to do a clean install of Vista on top of my current system, just on C.
Will this re-install the Windows MBR and prevent Grub2 from booting? If so, how to I re-set grub2 as the MBR?
I tried searching for this both in the forums and on google but it seems that everything goes back to MBR installation. I know that "grub-install /dev/sda1" should install it to the sda1 partition, but instead of installing it keeps giving me the following error:

I tried this with a fresh installation of Karmic on both of my PCs. I tried with --recheck option as well, same error. Installing it to MBR works fine, but I don't want it there, have another bootloader chainloading grub. Every single guide I found installs GRUB2 to MBR, and some briefly reference to "grub-install /dev/sdaX" without going into any detail. At first I thought the problem was because Ubuntu was installed on a logical partition, so I created a separate /boot partition and formatted it as ext2, still getting the same problem.

I recently installed windows 7 and of course it got rid of grub2 for me. I tried restoring it but when I try to mount the ubuntu partition (sda3, extended filesystem) I get the error "mount: you must specify the filesystem type"
View 9 Replies View Relatedi had ubuntu and slackware installed together for a while, i just needed xp to do some native language work so i installed it on my extra partition but then i messed up the grub menu, however i reinstalled it from live cd.. but now the problem is i dont know how to add a xp in that.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a dual boot setup with Windows 7 and Ubuntu. Lately Windows 7 has been causing me all kinds of grief and I decided that it would be better to just restore it back to factory settings. I have a Windows 7 recovery partition (hidden) that I can see from Ubuntu, however Grub2 does not detect it. It only has two identical Windows entries that take me into Windows (though in /boot/grub/grub.cfg they point to hd0,msdos1 and hd0,msdos2 respectively).
I have searched far and wide on the Internet on how to gain access to this recovery partition to no avail. I even found a link from Lenovo's website that details how to do this in the old version of Grub, though it doesn't work in Grub2.

I have already backed up all my data, so I can nuke the whole disk if that's what it takes, but I don't actually have a Windows Recovery CD, only the hidden partition which I can't seem to boot into.
I also saw some posts where people were having trouble disabling the recovery partitions from appearing in the Grub menu, their answers often consisted of people telling them that it's not possible to disable the recovery partition from appearing without hiding the main Windows Install, oh the irony!
As a big supporter of Ubuntu, after installing Ubuntu 10.10 on my mums laptop i decided to also install it on my sisters Acer Aspire one netbook.
The specific netbook had pre-installed Win7 starter. Everything went really smooth with the installation with ubuntu 10.10, Grub menu was also loading pretty well but when i chose to load on windows it loads the recovery partition of the hard drive.
The issue is that the netbook, like most netbooks and laptops, has a hidden partition which is used to recover Windows on the system. My Grub2 loader added this partition as an option to load windows with result me not be able to boot on windows ...well i do can load but it loads the recovery of windows.
I get the error - 'You must specify the filesystem type'.I used the syntax on the GRUB2 page:mount /dev/sdb3 /mnt but it returns the above error.Is there additional parameters to the code???

I am trying to put GRUB2 on the Ubuntu partition, but it will only let me pick the first two. If I pick the Ubuntu partition in the last dialog bix, it is listed as /dev/sda-1 I also have no idea why is says "-1", because the first two are fine at 1 and 2 respectively.
On my Samsung netbook, I have successfully got a pretty speedy dual-boot of Windows 7 Starter and Ubuntu 10.10
I set up Burg, to well, replace Grub2 in favour of a more attractive interface and so far so good. I know that I can hide the older Ubuntu kernels/recovery slots by pressing the 'F'key. However, the Windows recovery partition still shows up. So it looks like this:
Ubuntu - Windows 7 - Windows Recovery (vista)
Basically, how can I hide the Windows Recovery partition? If I ever do need to use it, I can access it alternatively by pressing F4 at boot.
I have installed UNR 9.10 Karmic on new Asus EEE pc 1008HA to dual boot with XP. Like many new pc's it has a hidden partition to recover the factory hard disk settings and Microsoft Windows XP. Unfortunately, GRUB2 has picked this up and is showing the recovery system in the boot menu. Clearly this is dangerous because the user could reset the pc. How do I remove or hide this boot start up option? Other thoughts: I do not believe Easybcd works with xp/linux. is there another easy bootloader?

reboot, let chameleon come up, it sees both Mac OS X & Ubuntu partitions and I can boot to either or happily, now here is the problem... If I select linux and boot in to linux from chameleon, i am brought to the grub menu, where i can select the first choice which is normal ubuntu 10.4 and every thing is great... until I reboot and my linux partition no longer shows up in chameleon, as if tthe act of booting in to grub is changing something / deleting itself from the partition? and I have to do the whole thing over again. SO, not having to even go in to OS X, I'm not sure thats really the concerns more as I'm doing something wrong with grub.
I have been running ONLY linux (ubuntu) on my computer for years now. However, a friend sucked me back into the world of MMO's (angry fist @ RIFT). So, I decided to pick up a new disc, slap windows 7 on it and now want to dual boot.Basically I had to do some disc juggling to get windows to play nice. So my windows drive is now first, then my Ubuntu drive second.Its been a while so I'm wondering how involved / what would be the steps to get grub2 to chainload into windows7 (in my head I want to say I'm going to boot into the live cd, mount the windows disc and reinstall the loader to the windows drive since its the first disc in the chain?)

Following the Grub2 tutorials I have tried editing /etc/grub.d/40_custom as follows:-

But no luck. Only way into Archlinux is to get into the edit shell and manually add the missing line and remove other stuff not needed. I have spent hours trying to resolve this issue and I am fairly p----d off
i initilally installed ubuntu 9.10 then installed windows 7 ,then i recovered grub2 using livecd as told in the post [URL] i did "sudo update-grub" and got windows 7 menu entry but when i select that entry windows 7 does not load but the grub2 is reloaded again.
i cant boot to windows 7.
Windows 7 have 100 mb partition "System Reserved" the grub2 points to that partition but still windows 7 not loaded.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm using Truecrypt to encrypt my Windows 7 OS. I also have unencrypted Ubuntu 10.04 installed on /dev/sda6 on the same hard drive. Since Truecrypt bootloader must be installed in MBR, I have GRUB2 installed on /dev/sda6, so I can use TC bootloader to load GRUB2. When I first install GRUB2 on /dev/sda6, I can use TC bootloader to load Ubuntu. But, if I boot into Windows via TC bootloader, and then later try to boot into Ubuntu, I get the message "no bootable partition found". I have to reinstall GRUB2 onto /dev/sda6, every time after I use windows in order to be able to boot into Ubuntu. It seems that starting Windows somehow overwrites GRUB2. Is there a fix for this?

I mean, how would I ever explain the need for the following procedure to a non-techie type, recent or prospective Ubuntu convert? The following is not a question, as I have finally resolved the issue but is more of a rant, I guess you could say. The reasons that I decided to post it are:
1) To hopefully help someone else experiencing this issue.
2) To point out the need for significant improvement in the area of editing partitions under Ubuntu Linux.

I installed Fedora 15, which was my first real departure from Debian based Linux OSs. I absolutely love the new Gnome 3, and was able to configure F15 to work as I wanted it to. On rebooting I realized that there was no boot loader screen, that F15 just booted and didn't give me a choice as to which OS I wanted to use. Eventually I was able to configure grub to let me see the boot loader and added my old boot loader as a choice. This worked well, maybe not a perfect solution, but it worked. This weekend I installed LMDE (Linux Mint Debian Edition) to another HDD. LMDE uses grub2 and after the install F15 was not recognized.
Two questions: Is there a way for grub2 to see F15? or Can F15 be installed using grub2? I really don't mind re-installing from scratch.
I finally took the plunge and let my debian squeeze install update from grub 1 to grub2. I am not sure if it is working correctly. When it first rebooted I saw it chain load from the grub 1. It went to another screen that said grub 2 and it hung there for awhile and then displayed "fd0 not found" or something like that. Then it jumped to the new grub2 menu screen and booted the os. I went ahead and ran the command "upgrade-from-grub-legacy" and choose all harddrives.
It displayed this:

Small History... I came over from Canonical/Ubuntu and was surprised to see that Grub2 was not that widely used or even developed..
I found this blog posting from Hedayat Vatankhah at his blogsite and this is what I did to replace the Ubuntu Grub2 with Fedora grub2 with the os-prober that Hedayat ported to Fedora and installing grub2
1: Install os-prober

Note I am using Fedora 15 .. this should work with any Fedora release that supports grub2

I got grub2 1.99~rc2 up and functioning perfectly with os-prober
If you compile grub2 1.99~rc2 you must create /usr/local/etc/default and then copy the file grub from /etc/default to /usr/local/etc/default
This will then read and parse the grub file information
I have been using linux for a few years but I am merely an end-user and many things are still beyond me. I have a machine booting XP and Ubuntu 9.10 with grub2. I would like to try Debian as an installed os, and I have used the netinstall and put Debian on sda6.
During the installation I was asked where to put grub...as I did not want to mess up the mbr which has grub 2 I choose to install Debian's grub to itself on /dev/sda6 ...maybe because of the usb-netinstall menu.lst eneded up with (hd 1,5) I changed to 0,5.
Anyway the problem is...after running update-grub from Ubuntu's grub2, Debian shows up, but will not boot. It seems to go most of the way through loading the kernel then Hangs at, "Begin: waiting for root files..."
