todays update required a restart an then it went into check disc mode but i dont have time to wait and ended it.is there a way to force a check disc on a reboot when i do have time?

can I force the fsck to more indepth checks such as doing directory optimisations, bad blocks checks, etc. maybe by passing parameters to the fsck call during startup?
When I ran 8.04, force check would be run every 23 boots. The ESCAPE key allowed me to skip it that boot and it would again start force check at the next boot. In 10.04, it gave me an option to use the C key to cancel, but it does not attempt force check at subsequent boots. It does not seem to do an automatic check any more.
How can I restore the original 10.04 setting? Or better yet, get it to perform as it did in 8.04

Two or three times on a daily basis it just freezes and I do not know why. For example, I am doing some minor coding, surfing the web and just some regular stuff and suddenly, out of nowhere, it just freezes. I cannot force reboot, cannot shutdown, cannot run, cannot enter terminal, nothing. Totally helpless. Only physical reboot do the work. Never had this issue before.

View 2 Replies View RelatedAfter a great deal of pain I have Fedora 15 running in Virtual Box 4.1 on a older Mac Book Pro running Lion. When I boot Fedora 15 I get a black screen. I can get a virtual console by banging on the fn ctrl option f2 keys I can then use 'startx' to get another black screen but clicking around for a bit gives me the gnome fallback windowing. Is there any way I can force the gnome fallback to start up directly on a reboot?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm running maverick on a laptop with a wireless adapter which you can turn on and off via a button above the keyboard.If you boot ubuntu with it switched on, everything works fine, you can turn it on and off and ubuntu detects when it is on or off.However if you boot with it off and then subsequently turn it on then ubuntu doesn't detect it and you require a restart for it to work.
Is there a way to force ubuntu to check for the hardware after boot and discover the new adapter in the same way that it does during a normal boot?
I have Fedora 12 & GNOME. But, this actually is an issue with many Linux distro's and GNOME. If I set the Keep Aligned Check Box Off - the next reboot it is back too set on. (Right click empty area on GNOME Desktop). I have searched many forums and search engines, I must be doing my search wrong there must be others that have noticed this, And the posts I do find on it are sometimes pretty old, so it does not seem like a bug would be around so long. I saw some notes about Nautilus also but no answers. FYI In CentOS 5.4 & GNOME it works properly.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a 8.04 LTS server that i have installed a new 1TB drive. The server is running great but I am bit confused regarding the ln -s command and drive mounting. I have backuppc installed on the server and I am running out of storage space. To reolve this I moved the cpool and pool directories to the 1 TB drive and type from within the /var/lib/backuppc directory ln -s cpool /store/1TB/cpool this created the symbolic link to the new drive and everything works fine. I then rebooted the server and everything is runing fine but the drive does not show up in the df -h command, however the directories appear to be mounted fine.
I thought the drive would not be mounted automatically until it was defined in the fstab. Does the ln -s command force the system to automatically mount the directories but not the volume? This behaviour has caused me to delete my backup data becuase I was sure the disk was not mounted but is was!

I have system (Ubuntu 10.10) on my pendrive. I want to use this system always from this pen - by boot on startup.
If I remove all of my hard disk from laptop and boot from pendrive - everything is ok, but when i try boot from pen when hard disks are plugged - its not working - because linuks want pass to sda2 partition, and this partition is already assign to wrong disk (should be in pendrive).
I have crypt(luks) and lvm on this pen.
I just want to make sure that my pendrive will be always shown as "sda" - how i can do this? I think it will probably fix my problem.
How to disable mount other disk - mount only this pendrive.

I formatted it Ext4 and everything works perfectly except it checks/indexes it everytime i boot which takes forever.I can turn it off on boot to fix the issue, but was just wondering if there was a bypass of this check on this particular drive.

I need to access my windows harddrive, however, so I used NTFS Configuration Tool to mount the drive. However, whenever I reboot, it fails to mount and I actually have to go back into NTFS Config Tool, delete the old mount, and remount it. This is tedious. My /etc/fbstab file looks as follows:

View 2 Replies View RelatedI just got ubuntu installed for the first time, I tried mounting my hard drive to my desktop so i can have easy access to it, but when i restart ubuntu it always dissapears and i have to go to places then click on the hard drive again to mount it to my desktop.
Is there a way of keeping this on the desktop without having to do this all the time? I have the latest ubuntu version.
We have an external raid box connected to a debian squeeze server.Every new volume set I have created will be detected (as /dev/sdx) after a reboot. As this is our file-server I cannot reboot the server every-time a new volume set is created.Is there a way to make this new device visible.I tried already 'partprobe' and restarting udev didn't work eather.What is a good way to do this?

Immediately after booting it said it was correcting a problem on the drive, I assume that it was running fsck on it. I want to customize my own live CD to not do this. Though I suppose it doesn't do it for ntfs since there isn't a fsck for it yet.
View 1 Replies View RelatedMy SATA drive started clicking and I was unable to access the data. It was not clicking loudly though, like a drive that has already gone bad. After tightening the connections to the hard drive, it stopped clicking and I was able to access the data again. I have started to move files off of the drive, but I think this drive might still be in good health. I didn't find any data corruption and I haven't had any trouble accessing any files. I have never had an SATA drive fail before so I'm thinking that it could have just been the loose connections that was causing the problem. What tests can I run on this drive to find out how healthy it is?

I installed Fedora 12 and it won't reboot from hard drive. It boots only from installation CD. I have motherboard MS 6163 and graphic card Nvidia TNT2 pro. View 11 Replies View RelatedI have an external USB had drive. It is a Buffalo drive. When it is mounted it appears in /Media/Buffalo. The problem is, every time I reboot my system it is mounted to a different location.
e.g. /Media/Buffalo_1
reboot again and it is mounted to /Media/Buffalo_2
The two previous mount points always remain present as empty directories. This is creating problems I need to do away with. I need to work out how to get this to mount to the same directory every time. In opensuse 11.2 with the automount option installed I did not have this problem. It has only appeared since the install of 11.3.
I installed Kubuntu 8.04.2 Live CD on a USB flash drive using a software program called Unetbootin (from Gentoo), and I can successfully boot into the OS with no problem but I am not able to save any changes such as preferences, because once I reboot, everything I changed or installed is lost. I guess this is because the OS is dumped into RAM and all of my changes were made in RAM instead of the USB flash drive.
My question would be is there a way (keeping my present configuration) I can save any changes to the USB flash drive so that when I reboot, the changes will stick?
Every time I reboot my server, one of my hard drives drops out of the RAID5 array. I'm pretty sure that there's nothing wrong with the drive itself. I bought all three drives at the same time, and they are identical in make/model/capacity. While the server is running, it's smooth sailing. However, whenever I shut down or reboot, I get an email message that the array is degraded. It's always /dev/sda1 that drops out of the array. I can always rebuild the array by adding the partition back in, but it's a bit of a pain. Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot this?

I mean, I understand that a disk should be checked now and then, but why does the system do it during boot, when I'm waiting for it to load, instead of checking them during shutdown, when (most probably) user doesn't need the computer anymore.
