View 1 Replies View RelatedI am searching for a way to broadcast a simple message from a server to the other machines (clients) on my local network every day at 22:30 (10:30pm) to warn users that the server will shutdown in 30 minutes (energy saving strategy). Basically, I was thinking to add a cron entry ion the server crontab to do so. before I go ahead with that, I tried several ways to accomplish this action. Then I tried simply "wall" and got a text promt to type in my message. At the end I pressed CTRL+D and got a popup displaying my message. So it worked but it was on the server's monitor. How can I send this message to a remote machine? Is wall the proper command to do so?
I also tried using paswordless ssh..It doesnt work. Basically I can login on the remote machine using passwordless ssh but when I issue either kdialog or xmessage, I get error "cannot connect to X server on diaplay 0:0" (or something similar).I tried also ssh 'wall 'message'' but it also says "cannot connect to X server on diaplay 0:0"So far I have several ways but nothing really works..There must be a real way to to that? All machines are Slackware 13.1 based.
i know messages like "the system is going down for reboot now" get sent, and even show up in kde when they're sent. can this be done from a command line?

I have been running Senmail on SuSE 11.1 for the last few years with no problems.Since installing SuSE 11.3 a few months ago I have been having problems getting Sendmail to send to some (only a few) servers. If I disable the firewall # SuSEFirewall2 stop.I can send successfully using # sendmail -v -q, or # sendmail -v -qIxxxxx.When I re-enable the firewall I will start to get the timeouts/temporarily unavailable messages again (but as mentioned above, only for some servers) even though I can successfully telnet these servers when the firewall is on. When I disable the firewall the delayed messages can again be sent.Has anybody any ideas what I need to change (presumably in the Firewall) to get things working correctly? 'SMTP with sendmail' is already selected under 'Services to Allow' under YaST Firewall->Allowed Services..
View 4 Replies View RelatedI am building a live USB key using Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic. No upgrades have been applied. It is as it came in the ISO that was distributed.I would like to create a smooth start-up/logout process where no messages pop up (even briefly) that might confuse someone who is not very tech savvy. I'm referring to the messages that show up right before the login screen during start-up (between usplash and xsplash I think) that say:
"Starting early crypto disks ..."
and also the messages that show up on a black screen right after you initiate logout. It seems to sometimes show system messages including some error messages that can confuse users.Does anyone know of a way to hide, redirect, or disable these messages? I just don't want cryptic messages popping up even briefly that are going to confuse casual users. I'm stuck with version 9.10 since I've made some custom mods and would rather not redo them for a new release.
I have the need to have jack running without any verbose debug message in the terminal, everytime. My system is ubuntu-based.

[Ubuntu 10.04]Every 60 seconds, 24 hours a day, a line like the following is logged to /var/log/messages and some of the other system logs:Code:Apr 27 11:37:48 HOSTNAME kernel: [DDDDDD.DDDDDD] ================>r8192_wx_set_scan(): hwradio offThat's with the wireless card disabled (since I'm using a wired network). If the wireless card is enabled, the message changes to "hwradio on".

This is for giving presentations, when it is usually more useful to see the speaker's slides than their face.
All I have found so far is Ekiga, but as far as I can see it doesn't offer this facility. Something free would be nice of course, but paid-for software would also be of interest.

2. if i & a process to the background and do nothing is this a idle session?
3. if user uses su to a higher level, are there now two sessions? is the tmout for user suspended until su user time outs or leaves su session?
4. i have some users who will run long sql queries. is there a workaround to have the session remain active until process has finished?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a very bad attempt at hashing the components of an tcp session to assign/locate the session in a hash table bucket. I am pretty sure that it has a very high collision rate and when there are a very large number of tcp sessions my application is having to search a long linked list to find the session within the bucket.
All the hashing functions I have found take a single string input where I need to input several integers and hash them into a single result. My guess is that any real hashing function is going to produce better results than what I am currently doing.

I am putting together some new systems for my customer and I'm having some trouble with a script that we use to back up files to a DVD R. The problem is that I can't write a 2nd session to the DVD unless I eject the disk and reload it. The drives are slimline type drives, Sony BD-5730S and Teac DV-W28S-V93, so they won't reload without human intervention. Opsys is CentOS 5.4 or RHEL 5.4. I've tried both AMD and Intel based mother boards. If i try this on Fedora 11 or 12 it works fine. This works on IDE attached drives but not a SATA attached drives. Fedora appears to use something called genisoimage instead of mkisofs. I can't get genisoimage to run on CentOS or RHEL.
Here's the code to setup the test files:
rm -f /tmp/BDtest/*
mkdir /tmp/BDtest
dd if=/dev/zero of=/tmp/BDtest/blank.iso bs=10M count=1
for NUM in {1..160}

I was attempting to get crontab to kick off a daily job, but the job wont start. I opened /var/log/messages and noticed all the logs were from 6 months ago. I cleared the log and then did a tail -f so I could watch it for activity. I then hit my box with anunsuccessful log in attempt. Nothing happened to the log. The uptime of my box is 22 days and the logs that were in it before I cleared it were from months ago.Is there a daemon I can check or another file I can mod to get logs writing again?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am currently in a project to set up an LTSP server with 10 thin clients. I am using Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic).
Installing server and booting clients are working fine. Now, according to the need, I have to restrict user session numbers and allow resuming previous user session.
I have achieved to do the first one, but still could not able to setup the second one. As per requirement, if some thin can have power failure, the same session should be restored back. I am confused here, if I need to focus on saving xsessions or saving gnome sessions. I am looking for a concrete solution as I am running out of time.
I can't add my facebook account to gwibber. Here is what i do:Click on envelope in the top panel. Click Broadcast. In Broadcast Accounts click dropdown and select Facebook. Then click Add.I then click Authorise. A blue facebook login page appears. I click on the small link at the bottom that says Log in with Facebook.Type in my credentials and click Connect. Wait a long time then goes back to Authorise window. With the words Facebook authorised.I click on Add and nothing happens. I did try to start using this on Alpha 2 but gave up but now I've done a full reinstall using RC version.
