Software :: Is There A More Stable But Equally Capable Alternative?

Jul 11, 2011

VLC does what I want, however, it often freezes up my system so that it's difficult to even kill itself. I have to do a hard reset because while playing something it gets stuck. If there's something I can do to stop that, what is it?If not, is there a more stable but equally capable alternative? I don't want to hunt for codecs.

Fedora :: Gwibber Alternative / Installing Gwibber From The Last Stable Sources Gives The Same Crash?

Jul 23, 2011

I used to use Gwibber as social networks aggregator/client, but starting since last update (current version 3.1.0) it crashes miserably on both Fedora 14 and Fedora 15.

Gwibber team looks reluctant to provide any feedback on whether this shall be fixed in foreseeable future. Installing Gwibber from the last stable sources gives the same crash.

Networking :: 802.3ad Bonding Not Using All Interfaces Equally

Apr 14, 2011

I am seeing an issue on a few servers where it doesn't appear all NICs in the 802.3ad lag are all operating at the same level. A few of the servers have two bonds each with two NICs in each bond.I have two NFS servers that each has 1 bond with 3 NICs.All are RHEL5 x64 2.6.18.I think the reason why I see one interface dominating RX and another dominating TX is due to the xmit_hash_policy but there are three hosts that use this particular server for network traffic. That's 3 different physical mac addresses. The layer2 algorithm should be fine in that situation I would think.Would I just be better off with balance-rr?

I remember hearing something about another load balancing web server but I forgot its name.

Does anyone know other alternatives to nginx/pound?

Ubuntu :: Hardware Capable Of Playing Sound?

Feb 1, 2011

I have been having a problem since I switched to Ubuntu a month or two ago; infrequently, my sound will stop working. It looks like when this happens Ubuntu doesn't even recognize that I have hardware capable of playing sound, even if I just was. It replaces the Audio Output options with "Dummy Output" and has no other options.I have tried doing some research on why this is happening, but all the issues I found were the audio output never recognizing any hardware, not just stopping after a while. I tried some of those fixes anyway, but the problem just came up again today. The only way I know how to reset it is to restart.

OpenSUSE :: Not Capable Of Operating Computer Thing Correctly?

Aug 12, 2010

After installing 11.2, using KDE, there was a transparent folder on the desktop containing a set of icons. Like openSUSE and Online Help and a couple of others. If I clicked on it, a menu would come out of the right side of it. I clicked on the X and the folder went away, never to be seen again. I tried to find how to get it back but was unsuccessful.

After installing 11..3, using KDE, there it was again! After monkeying around with it for a while, I clicked on the X and again, it seems gone for good! I still can't find how to get it back!

Also, it seems no one else has this problem so I guess I'm just not capable of operating this computer thing correctly.

Ubuntu Networking :: Netbook Is Not Capable To Deal With Some UTP Cables

Feb 18, 2010

I have a strange problem regarding the connection to a LAN. I have a asus eeepc 1000H with Ubuntu netbook remix 9.10 (dual boot with WinXp). I've discovered two days ago that one of the pins from the ethernet port is pushed inside. This led to the fact that my netbook is not capable to deal with some UTP cables in the sense that it won't connect at the network through this cables. These cables work perfectly for any other computer. This is true for XP - for Ubuntu I found that it is not possible at all to connect through any cable at a LAN. There is an exception to that - my internet connection at home is done through PPPOE and I am able to access the internet through Ubuntu and WinXp.

Asus Romania won't honor the warranty (in their opinion I abused the product and it is my fault - fair enough - it is my fault since I am the single owner of the product - and I am connecting it in various locations to various ethernet cables) and in order to fix it they told me they will need to change the entire motherboard - which I guess it will cost me a price close to the price of the netbook itself - and I don't want to pay that much just for a pushed inside pin. (I wrote these to avoid questions regarding the warranty).I can live with the fact that some of the ethernet/UTP cables won't work with my netbook - but I can't live with the fact that the Ubuntu OS is not capable to connect to the internet through the ethernet port in any other locations besides my home. I require help in order to establish if there is something wrong with the Ubuntu ethernet settings or the Ubuntu OS is not capable to connect to internet through the faulty ethernet port (WinXp can).

Programming :: Sed Substitution - Doesn't Appear To Be Capable Of Resolving Variables

Dec 21, 2008

I have a simple script that I am writing to parse an XML file for me, and update some version numbers. Basically what happens in my script is that I'm running a grep command on the file to get the current version number, then I prompt for a new number, and then I want to globally replace that version number in the file. The problem is, the sed command seems to only want literal values (it doesn't appear to be capable of resolving variables). For example, this code doesn't work:

[Code]...

I have tried removing the curly brackets from the variable names, quoting them, etc. and nothing seems to work. Should I do this with awk instead (and if so can you kindly write out the command for me because I never bothered to learn awk).

Slackware :: Virtual 'web' Server For Internet Capable Devices

Aug 10, 2010

i work in consumer electronics, and due to company constraints on network usage, i came up with a "jail box" to test blu-ray players, TV's etc that can connect to the internet. the majority of the complaints the server addresses are mailnly "blu-ray player can't connect to the internet", etc... right now it's set up only to return pings that the devices do to test connectivity (i.e. entries in the etc/hosts file for www.samsung.com, www.lge.com, etc.).

i want to have the box actually provide DNS, samba shares, possibly a "pseudo-you-tube" link to test other functions, but the first one i want to tackle is to have the box providing actual DNS services (even though all DNS queries will after all point to the same ip address) the samba shares i know isn't a big headache, i already have it providing virtual web pages (but with no content as yet), the "virtual you-tube" page i'll tackle later. so how would i go about setting up BIND to do this? keep in mind this is a standalone box, not connected to anything but the device under test.

Debian Hardware :: Control Screen Brightness With DDC / CI Capable Monitor

Jul 5, 2014

I bought a new computer, pretty awesome machine, AMD FX6300 with a Radeon 260X graphics. Along I bought a new Led monitor AOC with DDC/CI capability.

It is my understanding that with the DDC/CI, monitors can have their brightness controlled just like laptop screens do, but better software controlled.

This is something I have done before with nvidia graphics, the open drive had the control and the proprietary only needed a small config setting. This was done however in a dekstop iMac, the screen also LED and HDMI.

So I just freshly installed debian jessie in this setup, it seems the open source driver does a pretty good job, but still missing the brightness control and audio through HDMI doesn't work either.

Ubuntu :: Build Some Form Of PC Capable Of Running Basic Dev Tools / Scm?

Feb 14, 2011

I need a dev setup which is external to the box I work on at home. I.e. I need to build some form of PC capable of running basic dev tools / scm.Given its very basic needs, was thinking of finding a fanless, probably atom based, micro-itx solution. I.e. small, silent, can just sit somewhere all day with a nightly backup to a NAS. (it would be really cool then as well because I can throw it in a bag and take it places when I need to -- its wrong I get excited about that...).Just wandering if anyone has done anything similar?lightly worried about the performanceWas thinking something like the Shuttle XS35GT:but have a gut feeling I could build something better for 2/3's the price.

Friend suggested buying a simple netbook as its probably one of the cheaper ways to getting an atom powered system, and has a screen for setup. ll it needs to run is a web server, SVN/GIT, Trac, maven, hudson and artifactory. I.e. it does not need to be capable of streaming video content etc (i.e. its not a media box) for 1 user at a time. Projects are not going to be the smallest for home projects, but really in the grand scheme of things its going to be small.

Slackware :: --current - Hplip Won't Setup To Network Capable Multifunction Printer

Mar 14, 2011

I'm wondering if anyone else has this issue before I send a note off to Slackware on this.

The --current hplip package can't seem to actually complete the installation of a networked hp printer that has the printer physically plugged into the network.

The hplip app initially does detect the device, then I click next, then it says installation failed as it can't connect to the device.

Perhaps I'm doing something wrong.

I am however able to build, and run an older hplip that --current used a while back and it works splendid for adding a printer over the network.

I'm using version hplip-3.9.4b-i486-1 but I know that's not a big help to the project.

Debian Hardware :: Wireless N Card Capable Of "master" Find One?

May 15, 2010

I'm looking into assembling a debian based router/firewall system. Fortunately there is a great deal of documentation available on this subject, so I am confident the project is viable. I'm a bit stumped regarding a wireless card though, especially since I'd like to use a desktop form factor rather than one of the laptop style slots. At present, I'm going with a mini-itx board that has a couple of wired nics and a pci-e x4 expansion slot (supermicro's x7spa-h). So, I can connect an access point to one of the nics and that's job done. In the interests of having one fewer box to find space for, I'd like to use a pci-e card as a (wireless n) access point. To do this I need one capable of working as a "master", rather than only as a "client".

Google suggested D-link's dwa-556. Linuxwireless.org suggests the D-link DWA-556 uses ath9k. It also thinks the ath9k driver is capable of operating as an access point. Can I take this to mean that the DWA-556 will be usable as an access point? If so, all is well, and I may go forth and find any card that uses a driver marked AP capable. If not, say because it's a hardware limitation, how do I go about finding a card that'll do what I want it to?

Ubuntu :: 10.4 Less Stable Than 9.X?

May 25, 2010

I've never really had a problem with ubuntu 9.4 and 9.10.In 9.10 I even used KDE 4 and even that went quite well (for being KDE 4). I have never had a freeze or crash in Ubuntu 9.4 and 9.10, and had been using those for 9 months or so. But ever since I upgraded to 10.4, many things went wrong. I think it's less than a month ago since I upgraded. Remember that I've never had freezes or crashes in 9.4 and 9.10.

Now so far I've had:

-2 times suddenly the mouse lags and I have to reboot

-1 time the screen went black and I had to reboot

-1 time KDE4 was acting strange, constantly giving messages about that it was going to disable composite rendering due to being slow. Yes, the system was slow indeed. Had to reboot.

-less stable KDE4.4 than the KDE4.3 of ubuntu 9.10: the new KDE4 version did more weird things like moving around icons when never asked for and being generally unstable

-many, very many, problems and obvious slowness due to nepomuk and virtuoso-t
-I installed KDE 3.5 after the KDE4 problems above happened. But in KDE 3.5 I've ALSO had mouse lag (after pressing "ok" on a window about installing updates).

-I use this OS mainly for Java development. The upgrade to Ubuntu 10.4 ruined all JDK 1.6 related packages and provided no easy way to install them, so I had to do it manually.

With Ubuntu 9.10, working productively went much better than with 10.4.I mean, ever since Windows 98, I've never seen anything as unstable as KDE4.4 on Ubuntu 10.4! I mean it, with what I've encountered, this comparison is really fair imho.Did anyone else experience that Ubuntu 10.4 is less stable than 9.X, or am I the only one?
