Debian Hardware :: Wireless N Card Capable Of "master" Find One?

May 15, 2010

I'm looking into assembling a debian based router/firewall system. Fortunately there is a great deal of documentation available on this subject, so I am confident the project is viable. I'm a bit stumped regarding a wireless card though, especially since I'd like to use a desktop form factor rather than one of the laptop style slots. At present, I'm going with a mini-itx board that has a couple of wired nics and a pci-e x4 expansion slot (supermicro's x7spa-h). So, I can connect an access point to one of the nics and that's job done. In the interests of having one fewer box to find space for, I'd like to use a pci-e card as a (wireless n) access point. To do this I need one capable of working as a "master", rather than only as a "client".

Google suggested D-link's dwa-556. Linuxwireless.org suggests the D-link DWA-556 uses ath9k. It also thinks the ath9k driver is capable of operating as an access point. Can I take this to mean that the DWA-556 will be usable as an access point? If so, all is well, and I may go forth and find any card that uses a driver marked AP capable. If not, say because it's a hardware limitation, how do I go about finding a card that'll do what I want it to?

How do you find one that runs in USB and how do you find it when it runs from a pci port. i already know that you might be able to find the kind of driver that is required to run the device

Lots of people have accomplished this by using aircrack but some operating systems can't install aircrack (not to mention that the use of some software is illegal depending on where you live) so i want an alternative.

However the wireless isn't working. NetworkManager doesnt even detect a wireless card. I followed the instructions here and installed the b43-fwcutter and then issued the modprobe b43 and modprobe b43legacy commands. Then I issued the iwconfig command and this was the output.

Also, I've been doing some research and found out about some file located /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules. So I looked in mine and found out that only my eth0 is added.

Debian Hardware :: Control Screen Brightness With DDC / CI Capable Monitor

Jul 5, 2014

I bought a new computer, pretty awesome machine, AMD FX6300 with a Radeon 260X graphics. Along I bought a new Led monitor AOC with DDC/CI capability.

It is my understanding that with the DDC/CI, monitors can have their brightness controlled just like laptop screens do, but better software controlled.

This is something I have done before with nvidia graphics, the open drive had the control and the proprietary only needed a small config setting. This was done however in a dekstop iMac, the screen also LED and HDMI.

So I just freshly installed debian jessie in this setup, it seems the open source driver does a pretty good job, but still missing the brightness control and audio through HDMI doesn't work either.

Fedora Networking :: Wireless - Harsh Packet Loss - Cannot Find Any Native AR5008 Drivers For My Card

As my internet browsing is somewhat up and down in load times, I decided to check in a video game which is generally a good test for me. haha I am harshly spiking and cannot find the source of my problem so my guess is a driver issue.

Server :: Local Master Browser Do Not Sync Their List With The Domain Master

Nov 13, 2009

I'm managing a residential network. Each flat is its own subnet, and can only communicate with the other flats through a router (i.e. no broadcast). 95% of these 300 subnets only contains windows computers (from lambda users).

My final goal is to be able to browse the entire network from any computer.

I set up a samba server acting as a wins server, and every computer is aware of it because it is registered in the dhcp. So name resolution is working fine for everyone.

The same samba server is set to be the "Domain master browser":

workgroup = WORKGROUP
wins support = yes
prefered master = yes
local master = yes
domain master = yes
os level = 65

When I browse the network (using "net view" or "browstat view"), I can only see the servers which are in the same subnet as the domain master browser.

Now, when in a subnet the computers arrange themselves to find a "local master browser", the only visible computers are the one in that subnet.

What I don't understand is why all the local masters don't synchronize their lists with the domain master.

So, to sum up, every subnet get the following behaviour:

-if a local master is elected, the only visible computers are the one in the same subnet.

-if no local master is elected, the only visible computers are the one in the subnet of the domain master.

-if I add another samba, configured as a local master winning all elections, then the magic is working and the lists are synchronized.

What is expected:
-every computer can see all the computer from all the subnets.

Debian Installation :: CD Cannot Find Ethernet Card?

Aug 27, 2011

I'v just brought a notebook computer with a CPU i7 2630QM. I install debian 6.0.2.1 via CD driver, but it failed to success. The probles are three, (1).it reported "cannot find ethernet card" ; (2). It reported "cannot install continue" after the diskpartion step have been successed; (3). It said "netinstall may be a choice", so I say "Yes" and It really downloading something (543 files) and successed . After reboot, I loggin and cannot link to the internet. There is no such files ralated to netware config and I'm not able to config that, for I'm always only a bar finder in an meau.(shy a little, but this is ture). I do it 4 times and the situation and results are the same that I got a smallest netinstalled debian system on my computer and I cannot play music, cannot link to internet. I wonder: How could I install a real debian on my computer? Need I download anther version of iso file or do something that I do not know to makes it works. I can burn an iso image to a real CD by my old computer. I can also install OS such as mint via USB flash drive. In the computer Highly-Orangized world (already-wisdomed world), I have a body already but I've never been installed a sprit or a soul. So I really need to learn from you, from the great debian bbs, learn something of vital importance to take me into wise and freedom.

Debian Hardware :: Find Out What Is Making The Sound Card Work?

May 31, 2011

I have a Toshiba laptop and Toshiba netbook (both Intel chipsets). Laptop - Squeeze install gave me the 2.6.32 kernel and sound only worked thru headphones but not the speakers. Later on, I compiled kernel 2.6.36.1 (and just imported .config from original kernel) and sound WORKED perfectly. I had a few other errors ("address space collision" / PM error) so recently I compiled kernel 2.6.38, which solved other hardware issues but sound is back to original problem (works thru headphones but not thru speakers). I even installed the "backports" kernel (2.6.38.4) and it didn't make a difference.

Netbook - Did exact same things as above but no matter what, the sound never worked on it... same issue (sound in headphones.. no sound in speakers) So, how do I "reverse-engineer" the laptop working sound install with kernel 3.6.36.1 and make it work with later kernel (nothing... and I've tried about 30+ thread suggestions makes the sound cards work properly.. other than kernel 2.6.36.1)

Debian Installation :: Install Lenny Via Hyper-V - Can Not Find My Network Card

Sep 15, 2010

I am trying to install Debian Lenny via Hyper-V. I get to the point where it asks for the network card. For some reason it can not find my network card. I have a RealTek (RTL8112L PCIe Gigabit LAN controller featuring AI NET 2 built on motherboard).

For some reason it doesn't see it. My issue is if I continue without the network how am I getting the drivers? Unfortunately Hyper-V doesn't support USB. I guess I can try to burn to CD but not looking to waste a cd for 480k and not sure that will work as I only see a auto.sh and a couple other files under scr directory. If anyone has any ideas please let me know. This is a fairly new Motherboard/NIC so I do not understand why it isn't recognized. I know it cant have everything but Realtek is a fairly common nic.
