Debian :: File Manager Full Control?
Aug 22, 2011
I'm using the default GNOME file manager. But as a user I don't have any privileges to move files to/from the user folders to the system. I elevated my user to admin privileges, but this has no effect; I can't do any file management in the system area.
I can use the 'root terminal', but it would be much easier to use a GUI file manager--even drag 'n drop. How do I get the file manager to open up? I guessed one way to do this is to log in as 'Root' instead of user. But login won't allow an 'other' login when I try to use 'root' as a username. Is this the wrong approach? Dave

I am running Ubuntu Linux 10.04.1 on an AMD 64-bit system. The server is primarily used for Windows file sharing via Samba in a small local network. I use webmin and putty to administer the system. I have two 1.4 TB drives for storage and one 500 GB drive with 18 GB mounted for root.I performed a large cut & paste operation (25.8 GB of files) using the File Manager in Webmin to move a certain folder into another folder within /media/Work. The operation failed and I am now getting a "root filesystem full" error, and am stumped.

I have a Ubuntu 10.10 server and I would like to have full access to / from my Windows 7 box so I can modify config files and such.
I have already installed Samba and created a local user on the server for myself.
I am at the point where I need to create the share to / and give my user read/write to it.
Additionally if possible I would like for it to be a hidden share for additional security.

I have Suse 11.3 KDE dual boot with Win 7. There is a Desktop Folder on the main screen, with one icon named "My Computer". when I click this icon, Konqueror opens a window with detailed information of the System along with Disk Information (detailed partitions of Windows 7). Once I select any one of these partitions, it opens the one said partition.
One thing I have noticed, if I "Right Click" a folder in this Win 7 partition, there is an option of opening that folder with Dolphin Super user Mode. After using this, I can edit the contained subfolders or files. On the other hand if there is a file (i.e. outside a folder), there is no option of Super user Mode and I cannot edit these files. at times I have to rename them or delete them. But for doing so I have to restart computer and go into Windows (which I don't like)is there any way of having a full control of Suse and Windows (permanently). I read the thread mentioned here: FSTAB - Editing Manually

How do you configure FC11 to grant full control to the tigerVNC session. I cannot do any software updates, update vsftp through the GUI and add different software.
There are probably more things.
I can do this from the local console but I want to run two systems headless and use my three monitors on a single system that I manage them from.

I am using vmware and virtualbox for experimenting with different linux distros and for using windows... When I switch to full screen, the upper portion(about 50px from top) of system becomes unusable because I am not able to click with my mouse anywhere there. So ubuntu's top panel becomes unaccesible and for vmware, once it becomes full screen I am not able to minimize/restore/close it.
In full screen mode, looking at the mouse cursor, it seems to be controlled by guest system when in full screen but as soon as I move it to top of the screen, the host machine takes control of it and then I cannot access any top panels or vmware toolbar. Is there any solution to this problem... Please let me know if more information is needed from my side.I am using opensuse 11.3, KDE4.4.4, vmware 3.1.2/virtualbox 3.2.10. The problem is for both vmware and virtualbox.

I am trying to execute command mactime in order to control changes made to the file system, but I am getting an error. I am running the shell as root, and it is the first time I run the command in this system - Debian Squeeze up to date. The I/O is as follows:
# mactime 3/1/2011
cannot exec /bin/date: No such file or directory
cannot exec /bin/hostname: No such file or directory
cannot exec /bin/uname -n: No such file or directory
Cannot open /var/cache/tct/data/Amnesiac/body: No such file or directory
The first three lines of output are the ones that are worrying at the moment; I am not concerned with the last. Although error messages suggest the programs date, hostname and uname do not exist in /bin directory, they are available as shown by

Laptop is Dell Latitude C600/C500 with Pentium III 850Mhz, 256Kb L2 Cache, 256MB RAM, ATI M3 video card, HD 20005 MB and sound card is EES Maestro 3i. After trying to do something with Windows 2000 which was installed on the machine, I decided to put Linux without keeping windows on the machine. First I try with Xubuntu (latest version) which was working but slowly, then I found that Debian could work fine on that machine. I have installed latest version 5.08 and was surprised how goodly old machine can work. I solved problems with screen resolution (change from 800x600 to 1024x768) but I couldn't find solution how to fix problem with sound.
Actually I don't have sound on the machine. I looked for a linux driver for that sound card and Dell is only providing windows drivers. Then I found that I can solve the problem with ALSA drivers but I couldn't find the easy way (or any way at all) to install drivers and to get back the sound. When I click on 'Volume Control' (top right corner of the screen) I get the message: 'Volume control did not find any elements and/or devices to control. This means either that you don't have the right GStreamer plugins installed, or that you don't have a sound card configured.'

I ran an update like I do every night and was informed that I have eight packages to be upgraded. I allowed the package manager to run these updates. However, it became stuck. The first thing to be upgraded is file-roller. I get the message "Unpacking replacement file-roller ..." and then nothing. I left it like this for about 30 minutes and then decided to stop it with ctrl-c. That didn't work. I rebooted and ended up having to fix the package manager as it was locked because it thought it was running. I tried to update again and after about ten minutes, it's still hung on the same spot.

If I use the GUI File Manager I ofter get stuck because I need root permissions to write or delete some file or directory. I realize I can drop down to Terminal and do either a sudo or change the permissions of a particular file, but these are several extra steps. Is there a way I can perform root actions on files using File Manager/Browser? Or is there an alternative file manager program I can explore that is more flexible? I am currently using Debian 6.01a installed from the Live CD, Nautilus 2.30.1.

When I insert a dvd-rom I dont get the option for the file manager. I do get k3b, vlc, dragon and two other options. Im guessing this is a bug since this didnt happen with Wheezy. When I insert a dvd data disc I do get the file manager option. Strange this is, after inserting the data disc, removing it and then reinserting the dvd-rom I see the option for file manager. How can I get the file manager option to show everytime I insert a dvd-rom? I tried to,create a new option in system setting but man is that stuff confusing.
i,want to be able to browse a dvd-rom movie/video using dolphin when i insert one. I want open with file manager to be one of the choices. I think file manager is the choice.

I installed Debian 5.04 with only "basic system", then xorg and the proprietary nvidia driver, then iceWM. ( I had to give up on KDE and Gnome because KDE was incredibly slow, and both of them had a heavy emphasis on visual decorations while I wanted minimalism. ) It was interesting and fun to get this far - and it all works. Now I need a file manager. This page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison ... e_managers has a chart. This enabled me to rule out the ones that don't have OSI-type licences (GPL or similar), and those which don't offer a "list view" of files. That still leaves 20+ choices. I've looked at some of the project sites but they don't give the information I'm looking for. I could install one after another, but I'm not sure whether apps can be removed without leaving a lot of debris like on Windows, and it may be quicker to ask.
My problem with file managers has been that they default to an "icon view". There's usually an option for a "detail view", but it has to be set over and over again, for every new window. I want one that can be configured to *always* give text-based file lists, without having to repeatedly set this option. (I don't mind command line usually, but having to type filenames and paths all the time gets tedious.)So my criteria are: * GPL or equivalent* Fast* Minimum "eye candy"* Can set it for text lists with details, just once and it "remembers"I've searched here and on Google but haven't found which ones (if any?) fit this description.

Secondly, if I wanted to just go back to 10.10, could i install it over the current 11.04? I don't want to copy files over or anything like that, just a fresh start.

I've been dual booting Windows 7 and Debian on my desktop ever since. But recently I installed Debian again on a new laptop that I recently bought and unfortunately it's being very different from my first successful installation. The first problem is that Network Manager is not picking up internet on the new laptop. The Wireless tab is grayed out, so I can't click it and look for a new one. I've been using Wired internet since, but if I want to take it to work I have to have it be Wireless-able. Currently my Wireless Card is a Broadcom 4313 802.11 b/g/n which I'm fairly sure is supported. The second problem is installing Firefox. On my first installation it worked fine, and the bin file loaded and everything. However, for this second one that's been a completely different situation and the bin file hasn't worked (by this I mean I can't double click it to open it).

For that I need the browser in the full screen mode but here the network manager applet does not pop up the network status as the ethernet cable is plugged in/out. I want that feature in my kiosk. This feature works fine in an ubuntu machine. update me if any particular setting is responsible for this behaviour.

How do I move the Window control buttons when the window is in full screen mode? I.e.: I know how to go into gconf-editor:
Code:
gconf-editor --> apps --> metacity --> general --> button layout = ":minimize,maximize,close"
(I've intentionally disabled the menu...)
What I want is my window controls to be on the right side of the window when the window is in full screen mode.
Also I've had an issue with the Unity dockbar glitching out. I can still click on the buttons (i.e. the logout button) but it displays like a nintendo game inserted crooked. Is there a way to 'restart' unity without log out/ log in?
Any one else experienced any glitches with unity auto hiding/showing?

One day I was using Gparted and following this I rebooted and had this came up
"Install problem! Configuration defaults for Gnome Power Manager have not been installed correctly. Please contact your computer administrator."
Initially from reading the forums I figured it was because my Ubuntu partition ( I dual boot Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.4) filled up for some reason.
I used a boot CD and cleared some files in /media. It seems like I kept about 17 GB of backups there for some reason.
The problem is that even though I cleared this out, I still have the same message.
I could just reinstall, but I want to try to keep my data for once, especially my virtualbox harddisks, unless someone can suggest a way to save it and reuse it.

The Volume control and network manager icons are not visible in the notification area..
I sure its has nothing to do with
Add to panel-->Notification area....beacuse the notification area is already there..
but the icons are not visible
the only way that I can make the visible is by typing code...
for volume control.. Only then they become visible in the notification area
Both, the network manager and volume control are mentioned in the "Start-up programs"
