Software :: Ubuntu 8.04 - Internet Download Manager Alternative?

Apr 15, 2010

I have used windows xp in which there was useful software called internet download manager (called IDM) which segments the file while downloading so multiple different parts of same file get downloaded simultaneously decreasing time taken to download. Now I have ubuntu 8.04 & I use wget which is fine (because I love commandline) but I think it downloads file serially. Is there any software which acts like IDM ?

Ubuntu :: Substitute For Internet Download Manager

Jan 29, 2010

I have gone through many threads but most of them have been dead for many time and I think there would have been a few advances in the Ubuntu software domain, so maybe a new downloader is up which manages downloads in a better way.Well, those who have used Internet Download Manager know that it is one of the best ones offered for Windows. It has many useful functions available in one single domain.

- It integrates to all browsers damn well, like charm.
- It can manage rapidshare, megaupload, hotfile and similar file hosting services very smoothly.
- It is a multi-threaded downloader which means that before starting to download file it breaks it up in many small pieces, and then downloads all fragments side by side, making the download very very fast, even on slower connections.
- It can also do very well with the websites which do not permit multithreaded downloading from their servers.
- It can take on video downloads from any page on the web which has a streaming video.
- It is very stable (if bought legitimately, which is not true in most cases ). But quite stable in even when not registered or cracked.
- Above all, it has a smart gui interface which provides interactive operations on downloaded files.

I have used many downloaders for Ubuntu and there has been some problem with each one. Some have a nice CLI structure but not GUI. Some of them are not multi-threaded. Some are multithreaded but do not allow pausing and continuing downloads (which actually does not satisfy the very definition of download managers). I haven't seen a single download manager which is GUI, multithreaded and well integrated to browsers all at the same time. What I want to know is, do my friends here at Ubuntu galaxy want to point out a real shiny star here which would make me forget the damn propriety software? Or if such a downloader hasn't been built yet, why not let's build one... Shouldn't be too hard especially if we have a model example (IDM 5.18 for Windows) in front of us... Well the algorithm must be simple, get address, verify the existence of file, break apart into several pieces and start downloading. I don't know how to implement this algorithm yet, but I am a quick learner and if a few expert programmers join me, we can do something that would remove one complain for most Ubuntu users.

Software :: File Download Manager When Internet Disconnects?

Oct 25, 2010

I use Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. I need a download manager that can pause download whenever there is a network interruption, keeps pinging to check if the network is back on.. and then continues file download seamlessly.

Though this feature seems basic to download managers, so far I ve never seen it working well in Linux at all... I live in a place where voltage fluctuations and thereby internet disconnection is common, around this time of the year.. So I am desperate for a nice download manager. I had seen 'Star downloader' in Win XP work like a charm. But Kget and Gwget drive me nuts.. As soon as the internet is down, Gwget keeps displaying the same download speed and 'Retrieving...' status and. I need to keep checking in and resuming download.

OpenSUSE :: Download / Compile Alternative Mod_jk To One Included

Apr 2, 2010

I am having some troubles installing tomcat on a fresh copy of 11.2. I began by following the instructions that I found here: Tomcat HOWTO - openSUSE and proceeded to install the requisite packages through YaST, except I chose to install tomcat6 and java 1.6, presuming that they would work equally well to the older versions indicated in the guide. My stumbling block came when the guide went on to tell me to download and compile an alternative mod_jk to the one included (even though I hadn't come across one, so I didn't have to uninstall one like the guide suggested.) The link provided in the guide was dead so I found an alternative link through google, and set up the directory structure as suggested. The next step tells me that I must run this command:

[code]...

I have tried to create an apxs2 directory in sbin, which isn't allowed. I have also tried running the command without the apxs2 on the end, also to no avail.

Software :: Alternative Means To Download Packages Through Bittorrent?

Mar 15, 2010

I finally decided to give Ubuntu Karmic another chance after Jaunty->Karmic upgrades killed two laptops and a desktop. Fresh installs work better. Anyway, Along my usual post-install trawl through the available packages, a number of them stood out that I never really paid attention to before, and they've piqued my interests.

The three packages are:
apt-p2p
apt-transport-debtorrent
debtorrent

If I understand them correctly, it's an alternate means to download packages through bittorrent instead of http transfers. What I want to know is, does it work? What sort of differences could be expected between bittorrent and http transfers when it's used?

Ubuntu Servers :: Setting Up Website To Download Files From MU Depending On URL

May 31, 2011

I know a guy who has a website setup where he can download files from Megaupload with his premium account without signing in. He takes the MU link's ID, eg: URL... adds it to the end of the URL (URL...) and it downloads using the premium account logged in on the computer he has his site hosted on. We don't get along well and I would rather not ask him how he does it.

How would I set this up on my own computer? I can see this being extremely useful for me if I need to download some of my artwork or projects from MU but I don't want to sign in because I'm on a public computer or something. I already have everything installed on my computer to host a site. I have a simple "Hello World" page running on my webserver right now. I don't need help getting that part set up, just the rest of it.

Ubuntu Servers :: Setting Up Website To Download Files From MU Depending On URL I Use

Jun 4, 2011

The original thread was closed because "Sounds as if you are trying to steal a service which you have not paid for. We do not support that kind of activity here on Ubuntu Forums." However, it's not stealing since I am only going to use this with accounts that I have legitimately paid for. This might not be the right place to post this... if that's the case, I apologize - please move it to the correct location.I know a guy who has a website setup where he can download files from Megaupload with his premium account without signing in. He takes the MU link's ID, eg: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=xxxxxxxxand adds it to the end of the URL (http://192.168.1.199/mu/?d=xxxxxxxx) and it downloads using his premium account logged in on the computer he has his site hosted on. We don't get along well and I would rather not ask him how he does it.

How would I set this up on my own computer to use my premium account? I can see this being extremely useful for me if I need to download some of my artwork or projects from MU but I don't want to sign in because I'm on a public computer or something or because the computer has MU blocked. I want this to be a private site that only I have access to since it's my premium account and my money. I am not asking how to circumvent megauploads download limit at all (I've already paid for it... no need to circumvent it).

I just need a nudge in the right direction. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.I already have everything installed on my computer to host a site. I have a simple "Hello World" page running on my webserver right now. I don't need help getting that part set up, just the rest of it. I assume this has something to do with setting up a proxy server - I just don't know how to do that and make it work like I need it to.

OpenSUSE Install :: What Download Method Is Best For Downloading Suse 11.3 From Website?

Nov 20, 2010

I searched the faq, I did a search online for this etc. The reason I ask is that suse on the download page of 11.3 states don't download directly since it is very slow and has no check sum. Therefore the iso may be flawed and you have spent 10 hrs trying to download the iso. My "fast" internet through qwest is at 1.5 mbps download so I assume that is why it is so slow to download the iso of 4.7 Gb.Now for the question the download page suggets you use bit torrent since it does the checksum but will download the iso no faster than the direct method. Second is to use check metalink with the addon in Firefox downthemall. I did this and had quite a time getting the iso link for 11.3 to start downloading. I would start downthemall from the Firefox toolbar and I thought wow!!! it downloaded that iso fast, how cool. Well it was not the iso but the website for the download page! At one point I got it to start downloading the iso but came in this morining and it was still going after 17hrs and showed several hours to go. I gave up and deleated it.

This afternoon I just gave in and started the download again using the bit torrent and I am waiting for the download to finish. I did eveything the site indicated but after and hour I noticed under logger it said **** openSuse-11.3-DVD i586 iso: PIECE 2206 FAILED HASH CHECK. It shows this same message from the begining of the download 7hrs ago to the last few minutes on each section. It states it is 75% complete? Is this normal or am I wasting 10 more hours? Sorry if this is not the place for this question but I never had trouble with downloading 11.2 and burning it to the disk. I think I just used the Directlink method and crossed my fingers. It did download ok!

UPDATE:

wget doesnt work with redirection. It simply downloads the webpage instead of the zip file. curl gives the error "Maximum redirection exceeded > 50 " lynx also gives the same error.
