General :: Where Does ITunes Store Its Stuff - Copy Its Data Store To An External Drive
Dec 8, 2009I have two students whose windows laptops are riddled with malware and not working properly. They want me to help them install Linux (which we use in school), but they are concerned about their iTunes.
Having avoided iPods as "defective by design", I know nothing about iTunes whatsoever. However I remember reading about DRM locking and such problems that have me concerned that I won't be able to do it.
Where does iTunes store its stuff?
Can I copy its data store to an external drive, and then into a linux home?
Then will it work on wine, or can another manager (rhythmbox etc) access the itunes data?
Alternatively, if I partition the drive and install linux, can rythmbox/wine/something access itunes data on the win partition?
Supposing they are buying music through iTunes, what will happen to that account?
Finally, one of them has an iphone. Does that work with linux?
Ironic that an apple application is blocking migration away from windows.

Feb 25, 2010I'm looking for the best iTunes alternative that has almost these features:
- being able to edit the track's name/album (songs in the iPod)
- adjusting volume of tracks
I'm currently using Rhythmbox. I have tried Exaile and Amarok just doesn't work for me. I can't recall what made me turn away from Banshee, too. I'm not really into Wine so installing iTunes itself is not viable.

Apr 18, 2011I fully intend to use Ubuntu One, Amazon, or another music store to purchase music from now on, but the problem is that I still have $11+ in my iTunes account and I don't feel like letting it go to waste. So my question is, is there any way I can use the iTunes Store on Ubuntu? I looked at PyMusique, but it no longer works with iTunes, as well as many other things. Would it be possible to install an older version of iTunes that worked with WINE and use the store from there?

Jan 4, 2010I got about 30 bucks worth of iTunes giftcards I'd like to redeem, but Apple doesn't have iTunes support for linux. I installed it via wine, but I can't get the itunes store to open up. I've been trying for several hours to get a workaround, with no success, as follows:
1) iTunes on Wine (didn't work, like I said)
2) Sharp Musique (old thread, all the links were broken and it's not in my Synaptics repos)
3) Banshee iTunes Store extension*****
This last one with Banshee seems promising, but I'm getting nowhere. I've downloaded the third-party extension, installed the .deb, and followed the directions on the banshee webpage. Still, when I go under Edit>>>Preferences>>>Extensions, it doesn't show up. I found the install called "iTunesMusicStore.dll" in /usr/lib/banshee/Banshee.Plugins, and I've moved it to ~/.config/banshee-1/addin-db-001/addin-data, but it still won't show up in the plugins.

If there isnt something that cant do all of that, getting itunes 10 to work on Wine/PlayonLinux, Because it installs, but just looks very messed up when I open it.

When I connect via usb I can open a file browser window and see the folders on the iPhone but not the files. Also the system suggests using the photo manager and banshee to view the files but when I open them I still can't see the files. I would very much like to be able to transfer music to my iPhone, from my linux-fedora, which the iPod device on the iPhone is able to see...
I have successfully transferred several "libgpod-something.mp3" files to my iPhone, but I can't play them on my iPhone.
I have tried the following software:
Rhythmbox (came with Fedora 14), here i am able to see the content of my iPhone, and transfer libgpod files. But I cannot see any music folder under the iPhone icon. So I just drag and drop .mp3 files to iPhone. iPhone can't see them.
Banshee (newest available version installed with add/remove programs), here I'm also able to see the content of the iPhone, and I can see a music folder icon under the iPhone icon, but I can't drag and drop to the music folder, but I can drag and drop to the iPhone icon, and the files gets transferred, but again iPhone can't see them. But I can play the transferred files from Banshee...
Gtkpod (newest available version installed with add/remove programs), is largely the same as Rhythmbox, but i get a warning that says: Extended info will not be used, when the iPhone is mounted. There is no music folder icon, but only a poscast icon, under the iPhone icon. And again, I'm able to transfer files to the iPhone, that my iPhone can't see...
In Gtkpod, there is no option for the white iPhone 4, so I've used the "xC605" profile, which is for the black iPhone 4, 32GB.
I'm also able to see content of my iPhone with nautilus. I discovered that the linux software I'm using, are converting the .mp3 files into "libgpod" files, but iTunes(transferred with WinXP) is converting the .mp3 files into "XXXX.mp3" files (X= is for random letters).
Is this significant?
I've also just updated libimobiledevice with "libimobiledevice-1.0.6-1.fc14.x86_64.rpm", but my iPhone still can't see any of the linux transferred files. Only the iTunes transferred files.
Believe me I've tried and tried for a week now. I've searched a lot, but most of the hits in my search, were for Ubuntu...
My iPhone is not jailbroken.
Am I missing something here, is my iPhone 4 supposed to be jailbroken to work with the above mentioned software?

Mar 22, 2010I just got a new iphone (yay me) but later realised that as I have Ubuntu, it is very difficult to get itunes installed on it.
Having said that, I've got Wine installed and attempted to download itunes 7.something and even though the whole process worked, it appears that when I try to access itunes the whole screen goes black and then if I scroll across the screen with my mouse it lights up various bits of what's behind the black screen and then after a while it tells me that it cannot access itunes at all...
So I thought, perhaps I should uninstall itunes, but in doing that it still appeared in my wine folder, so I uninstalled wine, which still appeared in my Applications list, so I edited my applications list and then tried to re-install wine from scratch (I know I sound dumb already - but I was desperate ok!!!). So now wine is installed on my computer somewhere but it now doesn't show up in my Applications list at all and I can't seem to get it back on there - any suggestions there would also help...
But my main objective is to try and uninstall itunes properly (maybe from the terminal window - but I don't know how to even do that) and attempt to re-install it to see if it works again.
I need to do this in order to sync my iphone. Cannot seem to do it with Amarok as I don't have Installer.Apps on my iphone, and cannot get THAT without syncing it with itunes to begin with....
Ubuntu :: Where To Store System, Home And Swap Partitions On Two Disks
Dec 22, 2010I have got 2 disks available and would like to create 3 main partitions: one for file system (maverick), one for home folder and one for linux swap.
I read many howtos and now I feel more confused!
I would like to obtain the more efficient solution in order of speed (performance): as far as I can understand (not so far) .. it seems that the best choice is:

My situation now is, according to guides I read before:

now .. before moving all my staff ..
I thought to have understood that ubuntu use swap only for hibernation / suspend activities, and therefore it's recommendable to put the system at the beginning of one disk, and the home folder at the beginning of a second disk in order to have quickly two disk reading / writing on the right position without moving too much and spend time.
But now I'm confused because it seems that ubuntu DOES use swap for normal activity (and so it's better to put it) at the beginning of a second disk.
I always saw my swap next to zero during my activities .. is ubuntu using swap like windows with pagefile.sys?

Apr 9, 2011This computer runs KDE4.4, Debian Squeeze, used by my wife who is a complete computer illiterate. Sound is provided by a HDA Intel card with controller with Realtec ALC888 chip. The C200 webcam is connected but not use for sound.When she starts the computer, she is not able to use Skype: the sound is not captured. She is barely able to find KMixer, but when she does, there are 2 input controls shown:- Internal Audio Analog Stereo- Logitech C200 Analog MonoNothing more, no controls, no flags, no way to add any more controls, not even through settings or whatever.
<rant mode>What else did you expect in KDE4. This desktop is famous for oversimplification of settings, making sure that whatever you want o change is not possible thru the GUI. But gets controlled thru KDE anyway in the way you didn't intend.</rant mode>Anyway, when I open alsamixer, not less than 6 capture controls are available:
