gnome power manager judges the system inactivity by the CPU usage (as well as the input device usage). In other words, it goes to sleep mode when the CPU usage is lower than 5 % for dozens of minutes set by a user. I'm just wondering the reason why 5 % of the CPU usage. Isn't it possible for user processes to be working with under 5 % of the CPU usage?

What else do I need to do to get SVN using gnome-keyring? I will also be using this with git-svn.
Desperation has set in and hence you get to view a thread with this title. I think the title explains it all. Or, what can be done when packages are no longer available through the repository but installing them from RMP is boarder line crazy.
View 8 Replies View RelatedWhile I can find my way around most things, terminals and desktop managers are different than I remember. One of the biggest problems that I am encountering today is that when running a gnome terminal (this is Suse 10.0 enterprise), I'm getting behavior in the window that I don't want. Specifically, when I type, my typing is underlined as if something is trying to spell check my window. Further, it seems as if when running vi or less, my keystrokes are only processed by these apps when I hit 'return'. I.e. if I'm running less and want to go back a page, I'll hit b, but nothing happens until I hit 'return'.
I seem to have tracked this down to the 'input method". Right clicking in the Gnome terminal allows me to set my input method to one of a dozen values. It seems that currently, it's set to "SCIM Input Method". If I then select 'default' or 'X Input Method', apps (i.e. things like less, vi, and even the bash shell) behave as I would expect.
a) what is this SCIM input method
b) how can I make it so that it is not the default?
I've poked around various configuration files in my home directory as well as in /etc, but I can't see to find how this is set.
I have two students whose windows laptops are riddled with malware and not working properly. They want me to help them install Linux (which we use in school), but they are concerned about their iTunes.
Having avoided iPods as "defective by design", I know nothing about iTunes whatsoever. However I remember reading about DRM locking and such problems that have me concerned that I won't be able to do it.
Where does iTunes store its stuff?
Can I copy its data store to an external drive, and then into a linux home?
Then will it work on wine, or can another manager (rhythmbox etc) access the itunes data?
Alternatively, if I partition the drive and install linux, can rythmbox/wine/something access itunes data on the win partition?
Supposing they are buying music through iTunes, what will happen to that account?
Finally, one of them has an iphone. Does that work with linux?
Ironic that an apple application is blocking migration away from windows.
I am looking for an alternative or a way to use iTunes store in Ubuntu.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am currently considering migrating an openSUSE X86-64 system from 11.3 to 11.4. There seem to be 2 possibilities, upgrade or reinstall. Opinion seems to be divided on the process of upgrading from the DVD.I have not been able to find any reasonable guide to using either method to migrate an 11.3 system to 11.4 and have the 11.4 system in the same working state as the 11.3 system was. What I have found for the reinstall method is trivial. for the upgrade method I have seen a reference to running rcrpmconfigcheck but I have been unable to find a man page for it on my 11.3 system or via google.
Does such a guide exist? It should be created by the openSUSE project for each release. If it works the upgrade process looks to be the best method. The last 2 migrations were via the install method. 10 to 11 but also 32 to 64 bit and then 11.1 to 11.3 onto a new machine before moving the data across. Both rebuilds took many days.I have seen many posts saying that it is very quick to rebuild the system. As little as 2 hours has been quoted. I have not yet seen an explanation of how they do it. I suspect that they rebuild systems regularly and have it all scripted or their systems are very simple. An explanation of how it is done would be interesting.Given that I do migrations once or twice a year, building and testing a script to do the migration is probably not worth the effort especially as the only test machine is very old and slow
I am wondering how i could set the system default Input Method of my choice. I have install extra language support (Chinese) and SCIM package (Chinese packages included)
All went well when i test it in Leafpad. The only thing I found it troublesome is that I need choose the input method manually every time. SCIM is already running at start up.
I have tried to set it via Language support without joy.... the System IME still showing X input method..
Whats the drifference between unix and linux senior?..
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have been trying to lighten the load that Ubuntu uses on my RAM and processor, and decided to try LXDE, as it is the lightest-weight DE that I have tried and liked. I noticed I didn't have any wireless connectivty under LXDE, so I checked the LXDE site for the solution, and it said to download and install LXNM, which supports wireless connections. Unfortunately, installing LXNM (apt-get install lxnm) also uninstalled nework-manager, and network-manager-gnome, on top of lxnm not working properly, and stranding me without any way of reinstalling the OS, and without an internet connection (I can't connect with a wired connection, either). Is there anything I can do, aside from reinstalling?

You know, something like you can do in Windows: just click certificate and there is a button "Install certificate"
Where is system certificate store in openSUSE?
I have got 2 disks available and would like to create 3 main partitions: one for file system (maverick), one for home folder and one for linux swap.
I read many howtos and now I feel more confused!
I would like to obtain the more efficient solution in order of speed (performance): as far as I can understand (not so far) .. it seems that the best choice is:
Quote:
disk 1: [beginning] ubuntu | home | others [end]
disk 2: [beginning] swap | others [end]
My situation now is, according to guides I read before:
Quote:
disk 1: [beginning] ubuntu | others [end]
disk 2: [beginning] home | others | swap [end]
now .. before moving all my staff ..
I thought to have understood that ubuntu use swap only for hibernation / suspend activities, and therefore it's recommendable to put the system at the beginning of one disk, and the home folder at the beginning of a second disk in order to have quickly two disk reading / writing on the right position without moving too much and spend time.
But now I'm confused because it seems that ubuntu DOES use swap for normal activity (and so it's better to put it) at the beginning of a second disk.
I always saw my swap next to zero during my activities .. is ubuntu using swap like windows with pagefile.sys?
Is it possible to store Windows-based documents and data (e.g, Excel spreadsheets, Access databases) on a Linux server, and easy to do so & to retrieve from a Windows client?

I am setting up a gateway Ubuntu box and trying to do this the easiest way possible. Using Network Manager in LL 10.04 I have eth1 (usb) accessing the net and eth0 (wired) set up and working. eth1 has a static IP address of 192.168.0.2 and the USB box has 192.168.1.1. This works and I have no issues with eth0. In order to allow eth1 to "share" the connection I have gone toIPv4 and change the method to "Shared to this computer".
Network-Manager automatically starts a dhcp server and assigns ip's from the 10.x.x.x class of IP's. I want to change the assignable ip range to come from 192.168.1.x. I have figured out that it is set in the dnsmasq-base package as uninstalling this and using:
Quote: >sudo service network-manager restart shuts down the eth0 completely - no IP can be assigned! Reinstall dnsmasq-base and it assigns it back with a 10.42.43.1 IP. (and all other PC's on the network are set to the 10.42.43.x range. Where is the dhcp range set?
