Software :: Give A Parameter Or String By Default To The Prompt After Booting From CD/DVD?
Mar 8, 2011
I am trying to give a parameter or string by default to the prompt after booting from CD/DVD after modifying isolinux.cfg file For this I am able to successfully alter the boot.iso present in RHEL+CENTOS DVDs using the below command mkisofs -o /new.iso -b isolinux/isolinux.bin -c isolinux/boot.cat -no-emul-boot -boot-load-size 4 -boot-info-table -J -R -V disks . But, when I am trying to alter the Netbackup BMR iso file it does not has boot.cat file and also giving me below errors.

(variable substitution?)
(parameter expansion?)
Code:
run_repeatedly()
{
NUM=0
while [ <irrelevant stuff here> ]
[Code]....
run_repeatedly "programX -o "./messy/path/output-$NUM.txt"" The echo inside the loop prints "...-$NUM.txt"; obviously I'm aiming to have bash substitute the iteration number so that I end up with many output files not 1.

I need to place an Ubuntu machine on a network where I have a DHCP server which does not configure the Degault Gateway parameter (we don't want ordinary users to browse the internet). Is it possible to leave the machine using DHCP and define the Default Gateway manually (as in Windows XP i.e.)? How?

Very happy with new 10.4 install, however there is a nagging password prompt every time I boot. At first I thought it was the wireless but I have that automated and it asks for the password well after the internet connection is established. I am pretty sure it relates to the passwords for Twitter, Facebook etc that I gave it to use the new tools in 10.4 Is there any way to give it permanent permision so it doesn't ask me at boot up? I would hate to have to stop using the nice new tool because of this.

Reformatted and reinstalled Ubuntu 11.04 on my Acer Aspire One netbook. It crashed the other day when I turned on desktop cube.Everything was fine, I installed the gnome desktop environment, but I powered up the netbook this afternoon and it is doing the same damn thing it did after I activated desktop cube, booting into a black screen with a flashing underscore on the upper left, that responds to absolutely no keyboard input. I'm forced to hold down the power button until it turns off. This has apparently happened for no reason. Not particularly happy today.

I want to be able to check the contents of a text file for a specific string and remove it from the file from the command prompt. I would basically be searching through a number of files and if a specific string is found I would like it removed automatically. pretty much a find and replace, were the replace is nothing. any one got any ideas on how you would do this. I already have the search part sorted just need to be able to remove the string I don't want from the multiple files.

I'm a linux user, but definitely no expert writing a linux or awk script which can concatenate a default string to each line in a file. For example, I would like add "This is the end" to all lines in a certain file, so that after running the script the file would look like:
This is line 1 This is the end
This is line 2 This is the end
Some text on line 3 This is the end

I had a problem with my grub (system displayed "unknown filesystem" and then the grub rescue prompt). I then used a livecd of ubuntu 9.04 and ran fsck for a while (closed it in the middle). Grub then worked. But when i select ubuntu 10.04 it goes to the purple screen and stops there. There's some error before loading the purple screen.

I am running Ubuntu 10.04. When I boot to Ubuntu, it automatically loads a GUI login screen with a list of users, mouse support, etc, and then when a user logs in, it loads GNOME.
I am curious if there is a way to make my computer boot to a screen similar to what happens when I currently press Alt + Ctrl + F2, F3, F4, etc (a no-graphics login screen), and I am also curious if there is then a way to load GNOME once I am logged in in this way.
The idea is that I don't need a GUI most of the time on this (somewhat old and slow) machine, and I'd like the computer not to load one at all unless I happen to need it.

OK im new to linux and Ubuntu, I have windows 7 and Ubuntu dual bootin but ubuntu is the default. I would prefer windows 7 to be the default.
Dont get me wrong i love ubuntu now. great for what i need (a software for linux not windows)
I have followed these instructions
Quote:
You won't be able to change it from Windows. To change it from inside Ubuntu, edit the file /boot/grub/menu.lst.
There will be a line that says
Code:
Simply change '0' to the number of your Windows install.
For example, if your grub has three entries and Windows is the third, change default to 2 (0 is the first entry, not 1).
But in the file it opens there is no text whats so ever so i dont know what to change.

When you install a dual-boot of Ubuntu, one of the frustrating things that you'll immediately notice is that Ubuntu is now set as the default operating system in the Grub loader. There's an easy way to switch back to using Windows as the default.
There are many way to change bootup options
This is one way to change bootup option
First you have to go system --> Administration and see for Startupmanager if it is not their
Now go to Applications --> Accessories --> Terminal and type
sudo apt-get install startupmanager It will ask for your password give it now It will ask Do you want to continue {y/n}? Type "y" and press Enter After installation is over close the terminal.
Now once again you have to go system --> Administration ---> now you will see a new Startupmanager button, just press that startupmanager button it will open a window
Enter your password to perform administrative task "now you have to give your password and press enter
now you will see startUp-Manager window in that you will see Timeout
Timeout in seconds: by default it is 10 second if you want, you have to increase the second 10,20 etc.,
Default operating system: by default it is Ubuntu
if you want to change click the Tab and you will see five options that is
Ubuntu with Linux 2.6.35.22 generic
Ubuntu with Linux 2.6.35.22 generic(Recovery mode)
Memory test (memtest86+)
memory (memtest 86+, serial console 115200)
Microsoft windows xp professional (on/ext/sda1)
and now you go to Microsoft windows xp professional (on/ext/sda1) and click it now it will change Ubuntu to windows just press close tab after closing that window you have to restart your system just wait for 10 second and see now your system will boot windows xp by default

What do they means?
Why some daemons find for config on a non-existent file (/etc/modprobe.conf)?
Maybe because these daemons was disabled and reenabled?

Where I can find daemons' default setting list?

I am thinking about installing Ubuntu dualboot with Windows 7. However, I feel that it'd be a pain to select Windows 7 constantly as it is my main OS for work and school. Ubuntu would be for offtime tinkering and as such probably booted once or twice a week at most. I intend to use the system to use the OS not to use it for serious work. Before I install would it be possible to install it in Dualboot while maintaining the ability to boot W7 by default unless pressing a special key to come to the Grub bootloader or something like that.

I've been trying to understand pthread in C a little better. So I made a simple program that takes in a string from the command line and creates a thread to print the string. I've looked online and copied the basic concepts but there are something things I'm confused about. The programs works just fine, but I have questions. Here's what I have so far.
[Code]....
One thing I'd like to know is why the 3rd argument in the pthread_create function which is my SendMessage function needs to be typecasted to a void pointer and then send the address of the function. Also as for the 4th argument, I would see typecasting to void pointer in some of the pthread examples I saw online, but in my case I'm passing a char pointer, would this be correct? In which case would I ever want to pass a void pointer?
Do I need a pthread_exit(NULL) in my main and in the SendMessage function? If so, why? I added the sleep() function so that I could let the pthread_exit function in my SendMessage function execute first. I simply saw that the online examples on pthread had pthread_exit() in both locations.
