Aug 4, 2010I recently enabled noapic on my laptop because it was experiencing strange input freezes on several distros that I tried.Ok, so it does not use the ioapics. My question is, what does this mean for the system? If it used apics before, what happens now? I am a freshly graduated computer science major, and I have worked with basics pics on projects before, but I am curious how this effects the running system.

Sep 13, 2010I've done the usual edit of /etc/sysctl.conf to include the parameter, but it just tosses errors. I haven't had to tune a kernel in a very long time, what's different about it nowadays (or have I simply forgotten how)?
edit: Added "kernel.semmni = 2048" to the tail of /etc/sysctl.conf and then ran "sysctl -p". End result is an unknown key error (apparently kernel.semmni isn't the valid name anymore?).

Jan 13, 2010I am trying to do a fsck on my ext3 partition, but so far failed to let the system come up in single user mode and having the partition mounted read only. It says in the kernel parameter that it is read only (RO) but still mounts it RW. A remount with mount -o remount,ro does not work, since / is always busy. what to do to get a fsck done? I don't want to boot into a rescue system, this should be possible on a running system (like Windows does it, when rebooting)

ACK Delay
Idle Connection Timeout
I have a Linux Box with kernel 2.6.x and 2 ethernet interfaces. I know TCP is a stack that doesn't have anything to do with ethernet devices. Said that, the question: is there a way to set custom values for each interface? For example, a server listening to connections in eth0 would use one value for Idle Connection Timeout and another server listening to connections in eth1 could use a different value for that parameter.

Apr 16, 2010I have not dug into Ubuntu for almost a year now (Since Jaunty, really). I am trying to come to grips with Grub2, but have just now encountered it in Lucid. I am having a terrible time with the graphics chipset, and it may well be that Ubuntu cannot be used on this computer (an older laptop with the dreaded Intel 82845G graphics chip). There are a number of older bug reports that it is unsupported, but some success in more recent versions.
Anyway, one suggestion has been to add i915.nomodset=1 to the kernel boot line. Now, this was a cinch in Legacy Grub, but I have been reading Grub2 wikis and tutorials for two days now, and I know about the config files, but I cannot find anything which tells me specifically how to add a parameter to the kernel boot line.

But I read in certain posts that this is only required for "older" graphics cards.Can someone shed some light on this? Apr 1, 2010We are trying to implement a firewall as kernel module through netfilter hooking (in C). In the following code we are allowing only TCP traffic. Source port number and destination port number are printed for every TCP packet. On execution, this code prints wrong port numbers. This is the first time we are using skb_transport_header function for accessing tcp headers.
We verified port numbers being printed by firewall through NFS traffic. On the same machine where firewall is running, we hosted an NFS server. An NFS client (from a different system) puts a file in exported mount. Firewall is able to capture packets for this file transfer but port numbers printed are wrong. It prints '69' for source portnumber (whereas ethereal capture shows it as 790) and prints '553231' for destination port (whereas for nfs version 4 it has to be 2049).

Jan 30, 2010I dual-boot my machine and I want it to default to boot into windows so that whenever I restart the machine remotely from my home it will be able to get back into Windows (instead of Ubuntu).
The problem is that every time Ubuntu upgrades the kernel, I have to reset the default boot item of grub back to windows. This is because the grub menu loader uses positions i.e. 6 for default OS to boot. And when Ubuntu installs a new kernel it changes that order.
I am looking for a way to configure grub to remember its default boot item under kernel updates.

Jul 21, 2010differences between Kernel Default and Kernel Desktop? I've found some past threads like this link and this other link, and some other google info, which suggest the only difference would be the io scheduler. Also, I see the default grub choice is "Desktop" and not "Default", so I take this as a suggestion to prefer one over the other.
However, my broadcom 4312 wireless only works on the "default" and not on the "desktop" kernel, so I guess there must be other differences. I just want to evaluate which one is the less long-term risk option to go.
