I installed KDE 4.2 ( and from using it I like it very much... switching up from gnome for a while ) and everything but one aspect is working perfectly fine and that is adding network folders... it seems that my install cannot seem to connect to any computer using fish://. Although when I ssh from command line it works fine... I installed the following packages for KDE for reference:
kdeadmin
kdebase
kdebase-workspace
kdenetwork
Also to note I am running fedora 10 and gnome is also installed on the system. The error that I get with fish is that the it cannot connect to server. Even though I can connect with ssh in terminal. Some places I have read about is kio ioslaves and there isn't any problems like I have occurring. From what I gather is that fish works fine for everyone else so I must be doing something wrong but at a loss for what it is...

I have been unable to connect between two boxes. One box is using ethernet cable and the other has a wireless nic. I can ping from the box with the wireless card to the wired box, but not the other way around. Using fish:// either way times out. Ssh and vnc services are open in the firewalls. There is no encryption for wireless being used. The wireless card is an imicro wireless pci adapter. I load the wireless driver manually after booting the box (./wlan0up,etc.) Both boxes are using opensuse 11.3. I did not have any problem using fish:// until I replaced a failing ethernet nic with the wireless nic. I use dhcp for the lan ip address

I've got a strange problem. I have a number of linux boxes - main running Gentoo, a couple of others running Mint and a new one running Kubuntu 9.10.All, except the new one, connect to my hosted remote server through FTP, FISH or SSH without any problem. However the new machine will connect to my remote server, via fish, but then gets immediately disconnected. I have discovered, via my hosting company, that it is flooding the connection and looking in my Router log I can see:Quote:1. 2010.04.13 03:24:42 **SYN Flood to Host** 10.10.xxx.xxx, 38299->> 209.85.xxx.xxx, 80 (from ATM Outbound)If I connect first through SSH on this machine it is fine and I can navigate through the remote filesystem. If I connect through FISH using either Konqueror or Dolphin, I get an initial file listing and then the remote firewall kicks in and blacklists my IP address for half an hour.Does anyone have any ideas why this may be happening? Once I'm blacklisted I cannot make any connection, from any machine on my external IP address - whether it is HTTP, FTP, SSH

I use the friendly interactive shell, or fish, as my default shell. I find it much more user-friendly than bash, but lately (as in for the last 2 months, give or take)dding new entries to .config/fish/fish_history and .config/fish/fish_history.tmp. this means when I press up I don't get the last command I typed, but rather the last command from before the bug occurred. I have no idea why this could be and have tried several tricks but none of them have worked. I have made a bug report on launchpad but I was hoping someone here who knows more about shells would know a workaround. The things that I have tried:removing the files to see if it creates a new onemaking sure I have write access to the filesremoving the files and then using touch to create a blank one

I got a Rocketfish RF-WEB2C webcam, plugged it into my Dell Inspiron Mini 10, and it worked just fine. Cheese ran it, tinychat ran it, skype ran it, all was good. Today, all I get is a black screen. Tinychat claims that it isn't giving out any signal, though can detect it, and Cheese showed me a black screen, though listed it as the the device it was using. I figure it isn't a lack of drivers, as it worked yesterday, and it really shouldn't have broken yet, as I just opened it yesterday.

This started after my upgrade to 11.3, if I remember correctly. I may have it slightly wrong because I don't drag & drop copy every day, but it's close. Also, it happened to my laptop & desktop both.
I use fish & Krusader to manage some 50-60 servers and it's a dandy app. But now, when I try to copy files to remote servers, I get the following error. I tried it with Konqeror. I tried it with sftp instead of fish. Same results every way.
I've tried searching, but it's not an obvious error message to search for. I'm flummoxed. And sorta frustrated. Linux would be so slick minus these irritating regressions. I had been using WinSCP / Putty, but the Terminal / Krusader I like much better --- except that WinSCP always works.
Here's the screenshot of my error. You can't see it through the blur, but the part that is baffling is that the top line says something like:
this action will overwrite fish://root@server:2222/ with a newer file fish://root@192.168.5.10:2595/.asterisk_history. Notice that the remote server doesn't even HAVE that file on its system.
Selecting Overwriting just freezes Krusader.

Running Fedora 12, I am attempting to compile an application. The README file tells me that I need Qt 4.6.3. Clicking on System - Administration - Add/Remove Software, I find many packages having something to do with qt, but nothing looks like what I need. Is this available as a package for Fedora? If not, what would I need to do to download and use qt on my system?

I am compiling and installing the custom kernel based on the instructions provided in Building_a_custom_kernel on fedoraproject.org/wiki site.
However, according to the instructions, anytime I change anything in the kernel source files(e.g /driver/ata/libata-core.c), I have to create a patch a rebuild the whole kernel and install this new kernel which takes 2 hours. Is there a simpler way of recompiling what has changed(without creating patch) and try that changed kernel? Since my changes are not in the drivers which can be dynamically loaded but is in the static code of the kernel, it is making life cumbersome. Are there any instructions for this? How does other kernel developers manage this?

I searched the Internet for software that is compatible with Linux and is capable of editing PDF documents. This is not counting anything that doesn't allow PDF as both an input and output. Also not counting anything that imports a PDF into some sort of image file, whereupon it loses all track of textual content. Found a grand total of one product, PDF Edit.
Installed PDF Edit. Easy. Tried just using it without reading instructions. Not intuitive. Googled and followed the instructions to edit my document. Not happening. Says my document is read only which it's not. Says it's linearized. Maybe so, but Acrobat never complained. Researched some more. Must de-linearize. Did that. Now technically I can edit the text content fields of the document but when I try that, the changes don't appear on the screen. All I really want is to place some annotation text boxes in my document, type information into them so it looks right on the screen, save and print it. Gave up on PDF Edit. Also attempted Acrobat 8, Acrobat 9, Nuance PDF Converter 4, and PDFill PDF Editor, in Wine, each attempt a similar nightmare. Will some kind soul suggest something, or show me the error of my ways? I really like Fedora and it seems a shame to scurry back to XP for this minor task.

The Avant Window Navigator beta, as taken from the project's Bazaar repository, isn't configuring correctly on my machine and gave me loads of errors previous to this point, so I've had my hands full for a while now. Three packages that AWN needs to compile (gnome-desktop-devel, gnome-vfs-devel and libgnome-devel) are refusing to install, leaving me with this Quote: checking for AWN... configure: error: Package requirements (glib-2.0 >= 2.8.0 gthread-2.0 gobject-2.0 gtk+-2.0 gdk-2.0 >= 2.10 dbus-glib-1 gnome-desktop-2.0 libgnome-2.0 gnome-vfs-module-2.0 gconf-2.0) were not met: No package 'gnome-desktop-2.0' found No package 'libgnome-2.0' found No package 'gnome-vfs-module-2.0' found.
Consider adjusting the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable if you installed software in a non-standard prefix. Alternatively, you may set the environment variables AWN_CFLAGS and AWN_LIBS to avoid the need to call pkg-config. See the pkg-config man page for more details. and this is why they won't install Quote:hal = 0.5.13-9.fc12 is needed by package hal-devel-0.5.13-9.fc12.x86_64 (fedora) I need an old version of HAL for the "dependency resolution failed" notices to go away. One which PackageKit says is still on my computer. I would try to downgrade via yum but setenforce 0 fails. What do I need to do to get this whole thing finished?

I was told that this command would upgrade from 12 to 13, while avoiding the boot space problem.
Everything seemed to go well, - all 1691 rpms downloaded to: /var/cache/yum/x86_64/13/fedora/packages/zip-3.0-1.fc13.x86_64.rpm, and then halted with the following message:
I'm not exactly a noobe, but this leaves me clueless. Can I salvage the upgrade?

I have upgraded three machines to Fedora 13.
On all of them any attempt to mount an nfs drive fails with:
Code:
This happens immediately - within a few tenths of a second at most. It happens whether I use mount -a(mounts are listed in the fstab file) or a full mount command. It happens on both 32-bit and 64-bit installs.
Nothing appears in the messages log file on either the server or the client machine.
It was working in Fedora 12.
Iptables and ip6tables are both disabled. nfsd is running.
Hosts.allow and hosts.deny both exist on the client, but are empty. They contain nothing but comment lines.
I can ping the server and run ssh shells to it. I can open Web pages in Firefox.
The server is CentOS 5.4.

I am trying to compile a vanilla kernel that I got from git in a VirtualBox VM running Fedora 12. With RHEL (albeit on real hardware, not a VM), I am able to do a make; make modules_install; make install and simply able to boot up the kernel. The make install step, in particular, creates the initrd using /sbin/installkernel, which also updates the grub configuration.
Under Fedora 12, my new kernel does not boot. I see no messages on the screen, not even if I change the boot command line to remove quiet bootup. I see disk usage on the VM and the CPU gets pegged at 100%. Strangely enough, if I change the initrd to refer to an existing, Fedora-provided kernel, I can boot my new kernel without any problems. I started with a Fedora kernel config and used it to generate the config for my new 2.6.33 kernel, so it couldn't be the case that I missed something in the config either.
Does anybody have an idea about what could be going on? Is there some specific patch that Fedora kernels use that are essential for booting up?
Also, the guest Fedora OS is 64-bit, if that is relevant.

I am trying to compile the drivers for my new wireless adapter card. It has me copy a specific configuration based on my Kernal (2.6 which is supported) to a Makefile, then "make all."I get an error after performing this task stating that the path ending in /build is not a directory. I follow the path to /build and "build" is shown in red letters with a black box around it. Just for fun I attempted MKDIR build, and it stated "file exists" ls-la says it is not a directory. I think this is where it is bombing, from the Makefile:
make -c /lib/modules/$(shell uname -r)/build SUBDIRS=$(shell pwd) modules

I am trying to install Elmer-fem on a x86_64 Fedora 14 machine. There are various things needed to to be installed in this package and I mean a lot of "./configure -> make ->make install" procedures. The problem is that I can't get through the installation of a specific component of Elmer-fem called ElmerGUI due to (I think) a problem in defining the correct paths of tcl, tk and FTGL libraries. I can't get through the compilation of the "post" folder, therefore, I can't install fully Elmer-fem. Here is my problem. Code:

export CFLAGS=""
export FCFLAGS=""
export F77FLAGS=""
