Software :: Finding A Program To Monitor Hard Drive Access?

Jun 11, 2011

I've been looking for a program to easily monitor hard drive access, what I am finding doesn't seem to do what I (and others) want. Does Linux have a program to show me what is writing to the hard drive and where, in real-time? It seems gamin doesn't present the info in a human-usable form and loggedfs needs fuse, which I am not sure is available now. Something with a gui would be nice, but I am not sure Linux has such a program, like Windows does. Other threads here indicate that there are not many choices and strace needs a path, which I don't know yet.

This is apparently a known problem. Has to do with disk idling not implemented correctly.

Fedora :: Script / Program That Will Give A Listing Of All The Content On My Hard Drive(s)?

Aug 3, 2010

Does anyone know of a script / program that will give me a listing of all the content on my hard drive(s)? I have two drives that I keep my content on (which is re-downloadable if I lose a drive). In the event that I lose a drive, I would like to have a list that I can refer to so I know what I need to re-download again.

It would be good if it doesn't list *every* file but maybe only the relevant folders and files. For example, many folders are extracted archives of 100's of files. If it just gave me the folder name that would be better than all the files (less stuff to sift through).

Ubuntu :: Can't Access Hard Drive

Oct 4, 2010

I have a WD 350 GB hard drive that crapped out in a Windows machine. I have a USB-to-SATA/IDE adapter and right after I pulled the drive out of the Windoze machine, I was able to access the drive and look at data to recover. However, I didn't get to download the data. Now I hooked it all up again and I get nothing. I can't see the drive anymore.

My question is simply this: Is there a way I can poll the USB port and see if I can see the drive from a command line? The File Explorer isn't even seeing the drive anymore either. I'm not savvy enough with Linux to know if there is another way to see if I can rescue the data on the drive.

Ubuntu :: Can't Access Hard Drive / Restore HD?

May 16, 2011

Well I screwed up and removed Ubuntu OS from my hard drive. Now I cannot access any partition on the HD (I had set up several partitions). I also can not install a new version of Ubuntu on the root partition. I have tried to doctor it with "Disk Utility" and "GParted" without success. I took the HD out of the tower and hooked it up externally to my laptop and the HD is not recognised by my laptop. None of the partitions are recognised. I have some files that I would like to recover, but not many as it was a new installation. The Ubuntu install routine, Disk Utility each see the size, number of blocks and something else of each partition but not the names or other data.

I was wondering if any one had any suggestions as to how to repair or restore the HD?

Hardware :: Cant Access Second Hard Drive Partition?

Oct 20, 2010

OK so not long ago i updated my pc to the latest version of Ubuntu, but it ran so slowly that i reinstalled a previous version (9.04). I wasnt too bothered at the time as i had two hard disks in my machine, one which help programs and the os etc (an IDE), the other larger (SATA) one for all my media.

However when i booted up my computer after the reinstall, my second HD was no where to be found. So i tried

mount /dev/sda /media/HD2

And that didnt work, i even tried putting it into the fstab file and that didnt work either. So i had a look at the hard drive details via GParted, and it was telling me it was unallocated. Weird.

So next on the list was testdisk. I ran test disk once using the default option file type of 'Intel' when analysis the disk and it told me there were no partitions - same again when i did a deeper search. I tried analysing the disk again but this time i chose 'None' as the filetype, and this time it came back with a possible partition. But when i tried to view the files on the partition i simply got the following message

Cant open filesystem. Filesystem seems damaged

I really would love any help for this problem. Mainly the videos and music are replaceable, BUT the biggest loss would be a lot of personal photos.

Fedora Hardware :: Access Data On Old Hard Drive ?

Jul 30, 2009

I've got an old EIDE hard drive that used to be used for a dual-boot WinXP and Linux (not sure what version - either RH9 or FC1), and I'd like to pull some data off it. That computer died, and I reformatted the Windows partition, but left the Linux portion alone. My current Linux (FC10 + XP) computer uses a SATA hard drive, and I'd like to get the data from the old drive to the new one. I've connected the hard drive normally, jumpered as a slave drive. Linux now boots normally, but I can't access the older hard drive. I tried the techniques in the following thread: [url] and commented there (with more info), but I thought I would be more likely to get a response by starting a new thread.

Here's a summary of what happened: ran "fdisk -l": the command saw both hard drives ran "tail -f /var/log/messages" and got the following: Jul 30 16:00:44 localhost kernel: EXT3 FS on sdb8, internal journal Jul 30 16:00:44 localhost kernel: EXT3-fs: mounted filesystem with ordered data mode. Jul 30 16:00:44 localhost hald: mounted /dev/sdb8 on behalf of uid 500 sdb8 was a FAT partition I had set up for moving files back and forth between XP and Linux (none of the other partitions were reported). ran "vgscan", which only returned one volume group When I ran FC10's Local Volume Management tool, it sees the hard drive and its partitions, but reports them as "Uninitialized Entities".

Ubuntu Security :: Access Remote Hard Drive From Another Computer

I have been moving small amounts of data from the drives to my OS drive and those parts share easily, but I want to move away from that method to move large amounts of data at the same time.I have tried using Samba as it is used for file sharing between systems and that I have to give my Windows box permission through Samba.

Trick is, I'm not sure where to start, though I have an idea and wanted to know if this is the right track before I start editing my file system.

Ubuntu :: Access A File System On A Hard Drive From A Live CD?

Feb 7, 2010

What i really need to know is if there is a way to access a Ubuntu file system on a hard drive from a live CD. When i acess it now it just shows the Windows files on it, and i cant access the Ubuntu partition. What happened was this: I was trying to install Ubuntu on an external hard drive. I moved all the settings to the Hard drive so i didnt think it would affect my other drives. I mustve missed one of them because insteading of loading GRUB like it normally does, it came up with GRUB error 21 and did nothing. I tried to fix it, but nothing worked. I finally decided to unplug everything except the external and install it from there, so id atleast have a functioning desktop. As it turns out, my comp doesnt suport USB booting. So the only way i can use my computer is by Live CD. I was trying to fix things so i had both hard drives power supply unplugged. being slightly drowsy from staying up late that night, I plugged them in while my computer was on. the first one went in just fine, no problems. The second one though, also my master drive, i was having troubles pluging in. while i was turning it to fit in, it made a big spark and shocked my master drive. That drive had my MBR and Windows on it. Now It cant find a MBR, and i cant access the ubuntu partition on my slave drive. Is there any way to save this?? im 99.9% sure ive screwed myself over hardcore epically, but im hoping to save at least 1/2 my data.

Ubuntu Networking :: Router Hard Drive Access - Don't See Any Files

Oct 23, 2010

Both Mac OSX and Windows 7 automatically see the drive and all the files on it, but unfortunately, I can't get Ubuntu to really see that drive. It sort of shows an icon under network, but if I try to open it, I don't see any files in it.

I have a very unaltered off the shelf installation of Ubuntu 10.10 on a Sony Vaio, some sort of AMD dual core vintage. I never thought that it would be Linux that failed to see the router drive, but unfortunately, that is what has happened.
