I currently run a home sever using windows server 2008. On it I'm using VMware to run 2 virtual machines (currently running CentOS (which is Red Hat based) as web and mail servers. It's not a big setup, we only host our personal websites and a couple for some friends. Although server 2008 handles resouces much better than server 2003, it's still running windows, which as we know is far more inferior to a Linux server. I'm trying to convince the husband to let me run everything on Debian, but he wants to run it on Red Hat (which okay, isn't bad but our household is devided. We have long running arguments because he likes his boxes Red Hat based running KDE, and I like my Debian distros running Gnome!)
The host server is running on a standard pc box, it's got a 2.5 gigahertz dual core processor and 3 gig of ram, almost one TB storage. (don't ask why I'm including this drastically important info!) I want to run the entire network on Debian. So that would be the main host running Debian and the two virtual machines also. The host itself would need to run as a file and app server for our home network and the two vertuals as web and mail servers. (we run about 12 domains three of which are under heavy usage with Mysql databases, so we run two servers so we can dedicate more rescources to the virtual server that sucks the most juice.) I was wondering how Debian handles virtualisation and what program(s) would be a good alternative to VMware?

We are setting up a new environment for a client by upgrading their O/S as well. These are database servers and are going to run Oracle on them. I have installed the RHEL5.4 O/s and all was well. I also setup all the required packages as per oracle documentation and still all worked fine. The dba then installed the following packages as he stated it was required, however this caused the gui dispay to be broken a X fails to start:
XFree86-libs-4.3.0-128.EL
XFree86-libs-data-4.3.0-128.EL
The current kernel version is: 2.6.18-164.el5PAE I tried to see if this package is on the Linux disks, however it could not be found and he thus downloaded these packages. Does anybody know about an alternative package set to replace these or alternatively an updated set specifically for RHEL 5.4 as I am unable to find any on the web.

I've been looking for a program to easily monitor hard drive access, what I am finding doesn't seem to do what I (and others) want. Does Linux have a program to show me what is writing to the hard drive and where, in real-time? It seems gamin doesn't present the info in a human-usable form and loggedfs needs fuse, which I am not sure is available now. Something with a gui would be nice, but I am not sure Linux has such a program, like Windows does. Other threads here indicate that there are not many choices and strace needs a path, which I don't know yet.

I'm using ubuntu 9.04; I have a large project in windows that I want to "port" it in linux.
It uses IPC mechanism "Shared memory" and also "Critical Section" APIs in windows, but unfortunately I have no good reference to change these windows APIs to their equivalent in linux?
Is there a comprehensive documentation or reference for this issues? I mean a table containing the equivalent APIs or systemcalls in windows and linux! For example, what's an alternative for the "InitializeCriticalSection" API in linux? Or an alternative for "CRITICAL_SECTION" structure? Or even an alternative for "RegOpenKeyEx", although we don't have registry in linux!!

I want to write Bourne-shell script that will be to do finding and replacement in any web page code (.htm file) name of the tied folder in which have been saved pictures, .css, .js and other files. This folder create a web browser when we save web page completely and has so name as web page and has ending '_files'. I have many web pages where name of their folder are incorrect. Of course, my web browser shows these web pages without pictures. I can count amount of web pages in a folder (/path) needed for me.
1) find /path -type f -name "*.htm*" -print | grep -c .htm or find /path -type f -name *.htm | wc -l I can get list of web pages.
2) ls /path *.htm > out-list But I don't know how to assign the value from out-list (2) or result commands from pipeline (1) to a variable. Then I want to do next:
3)
var="1"
# where variable 'list' is an amount of web pages
while [ $var -le $list ]
[code]....
4)assign the 1st (then 2nd , etc. ) value from out-list (2) to variable 'webfile'
sed -n $var,+0p out-spisok
5)find the 1st string value '_files' in the 'webfile' grep -m1 _files $webfile
6)For example, 'abracadabra_files' is an incorrect folder in the 'webfile' I must to know start and end position 'abracadabra' without ending '_files', "cut" name of the incorrect folder and assign it to the variable 'finder' finder = 'abracadabra' BTW, name of a folder before '_files' is between '="' and '_files' in any web page code.
7)foldernew = $webfile (without '.htm')' foldernew' is equal with name of the tied folder without ending '_files' in the folder '/path'
8)find and replace in the 'webfile' and save result in the 'webfile-out'sed s/$finder/$foldernew/g $webfile > $webfile-out

What are the possible Ubuntu/Linux substitute software applications for Itunes program that is used by most M/S windows computer users. It is my understanding that "maybe", Itunes can be made to work under Ubuntu by going thru a process that resembles reinventing the wheel - am not interested in doing that. Just want an application that does basically the same thing that Itunes does under Windows but does it under Ubuntu. Looking for something that I can point potential Ubuntu converts to, when they ask how do I continue to use Itunes.

I am wondering if there's a better alternative than jigdo. I was trying to help out and choose what is recommended but this jigdo crap is ridiculous. Didn't work for me and the primitive bad design of it is a waste of time.
Maybe Debian should consider joining today's technology. There are supposed to be hybrid isos you can download and even Ubuntu is finally joining the camps doing that. But, there's nothing on Debian web pages mentioning 'hybrid isos.' Who uses jigdo anyway? There's no way of entering the url or any instructions that make it intuitive. Get rid of the jigdo and do something different....

I am tired of watching fsck check my filesystem when my eeepc 901 shuts down abruptly due to a crash. I know that with a journaling filesystem, I won't have to wait for a check. However, I am well aware of the poor I/O performance of the SSD, so I can imagine using a journaling filesystem being even more frustrating, since there will be constant writes to the journal? I will buy a new laptop without such a crummy ssd someday but, is there anything I can do now, on the software side of things?

Looking to get some input on finding a distribution to move to from Ubuntu.Overall, there's some changes--mostly unimportant overall, but stick in my craw--on the horizon, and I'm looking for alternatives. I'm a casual user, only one using my machine, don't need anything extra-special...something that isn't extremely utilitarian from the get-go, and doesn't come loaded with a boatload of things I'll never use. I enjoy putzing around in a CLI, and I'm not opposed to having to get used to slightly different commands when using it (though I expect that, on the whole, most things will be the same).I know, a little vague on what I'm looking for...best put, a stable system that doesn't require me to do TOO much, but lets me do what I want even if it means breaking things every once in a while.

I'm looking for an alternative to OmniDazzle. I need one for making screencasts. In facts, I only need something that allows me to have a focus on my mouse or to make a focus on an item on the screen. I only need "Flashlight" and "Cutout"/"Focal point" functions from OmniDazzle.[EDIT]If it could add an effect on each mouse click, it would be great ![/EDIT]If there is a screencast software that allows me to do what I'm searching for, it'll be awesome !

Having been totally happy with Ubuntu 10.04 and 10.10 but after a recent fresh install of 11.04 I find myself extremely stressed out with the desk top.I absolutely hate the unity desktop. It's flakey, unreliable, with random mouseclick issues, random application crashes and poor performance both in the increased time it now takes me to navigate to the apps that I want to fire up and in terms of really slow rendering of menus. It's awkward to start up multiple apps (I typically have my IDE, eMail client, browser, ssh terminals to remote servers and at least one terminal running at any one time)
I use my system as a serious development platform and I have come to the conclusion that 11.04 in it's default configuration format (and also with the classic log in being just as flakey) has to go. It's costing me too much in lost development time.So I'm faced with a decision, move back to using 10.10, stick with 11.04 but find a very much better desktop alternative to unity (and I don't mean the classic log in options as already explained) or I ditch Ubuntu in favour of an alternative distribution.

Ive been wondering, if there is a audio player for Linux similiar to Foobar. The only thing Im searching for is the ability to sort media library by folder structure. If you know something that can do the job, let me know... Im also searching for easy, intuitive text editor, like Notepad++. I use it for working in school and i just love the way it handles "tab" spaces, and bullet lists.

I have switched two computers, my own and my mom's home computer, over to Linux Mint 7 XFCE CE, after trying out close to a dozen distros. Now my mom wants her work computer switched. But we need a program to replace the aforementioned Legalmath. That program will calculate interest on irregular payments (such as past due child support or spousal maintenance)and also calculates payments needed on a loan or past due bill in collection. It can also calculate future value of present payments and some other interesting things that my mom does not really do. If there are any other family law attorneys in the forum who have found a good program, please let me know. Or if anyone knows of a program that will do these functions well. This is basically the last hurdle before my mom and I both throw Windows completely out.
