Software :: Filename Conflicts Avoided In A Environment?

Aug 2, 2011

This might be a question for developers and distribution-specific package maintainers respectively. Since google wasn't my friend today, I'll humbly ask here:

1. I've never ever encountered a "file already exists in filesystem" error when installing a new package (for the Arch Linux dist) - unless a previous version of the package was somehow forgotten by my package manager (pacman). Have I just been lucky, or do package maintainers keep a list of each and every path occupied by files of previous packages? Neither?

2. What needs to be considered by the developer of a piece of software when it comes to something as trivial as names of files produced by the source? Names of binaries, for example, don't seem to be entirely random, but descriptive of what the binary/library does in runtime. If I wanted to name my new amazing piece of software (which is not GNU echo) 'echo', what would primarily make me decide otherwise? Is there any "centralization" with regards to what names cannot (should not) be used in a given situation?

Debian :: Why Aptitude Can't Resolve Conflicts That Apt-get Can

Sep 23, 2015

I'm using Debian Testing (I know it doesn't happen in Stable)

Words isn't required here. I'll show examples:

# aptitude dist-upgrade
Code: Select allThe following NEW packages will be installed:
  appstream{a} coinor-libcoinutils3v5{ab} coinor-libosi1v5{ab} cpp-5{a}
  g++-5{a} gcc-5{a} gcj-5-jre{a} gcj-5-jre-headless{a} gcj-5-jre-lib{a}

  kded5{a} kinit{a} kio{a} libapt-inst1.7{a} libapt-pkg4.16{a} libasan2{a}

[Code] ....

Why apt-get can while aptitude can't?

I've searched on web, and all I can tell is that aptitude is "safer" than apt-get because it taking account the packages on hold.

But I don't have any package on hold! (I've tested dpkg --get-selections | grep hold)

Fedora :: IRQ Conflicts - ECC Disabled In BIOS

Sep 3, 2010

When I moved from Fedora 13 from Fedora 11, I thought the annoying application crashes that I had been having were gone for good. Random crashes - firefox, Thunderbird, Abrt, metacity and what have you with SIGSEGV errors. I'm beginning to believe that these are not down to Fedora or even the RAM (Have run Memtest, several times). I'm not sure if what I am seeing are signs of IRQ conflicts of some sort. Can someone, please have a look and give me some guidance on what to do? Should I reinstall with acpi=off ? noapic? Also, don't have a clue why the system complains of ECC being disabled? The RAM is non-ECC. I have posted some sections of the logs here with links to the full logs instead of making this a massive post.

Code:
EDAC MC: Ver: 2.1.0 Aug 27 2010
EDAC amd64_edac: Ver: 3.3.0 Aug 27 2010
EDAC amd64: This node reports that Memory ECC is currently disabled, set F3x44[22] (0000:00:18.3).
EDAC amd64: ECC disabled in the BIOS or no ECC capability, module will not load.
Either enable ECC checking or force module loading by setting 'ecc_enable_override'.
(Note that use of the override may cause unknown side effects.)

OpenSUSE :: Package Conflicts Updating KDE SC 4.6.5

Jul 16, 2011

OpenSUSE 11.4, 64 bits, with
Index of /repositories/KDE:/Release:/46/openSUSE_11.4
and
Index of /repositories/KDE:/Extra/KDE_Release_46_openSUSE_11.4
repositories enabled. Since some days, if I go to YaST2 †’ Package †’ "Update packages if a new version is available" (I'm translating from Spanish) I get a warning that plasma-addons-4.6.5-9.3.x86_64 needs akonadi-runtime < 1.5.40, but that that requirement cannot be match because there are eliminated providers: akonadi-runtime-1.5.3-91.1.x86_64
and non instalable providers: akonadi-runtime-1.5.0-3.3.1.x86_64[openSUSE-11.4-11.4-0]
As "solution" it offers me to not install akonadi-runtime-1.6.0.93.1.x86_64 and libakonadiprotocolinternals1-1.6.0.93.1.x86_64 (which I selected) or to uninstall plasma-addons and kadressbook, which I do not think it is a good idea...

Ubuntu One :: U1 Conflicts And Slow Uploading

Feb 11, 2010

I keep getting u1conflicts in my Moneydance backup. For example, I am usually doing something in Moneydance daily. However, when I went to open it up yesterday, it didn't save anything from the previous 3 days. The last 3 days worth were u1.conflict. Moreover, this is the only computer that we do the Moneydance transactions on. My other question is about the speed it is taking to upload all my pictures. Granted, I do have A lot of pictures (3000+), but it is taking forever to upload them. When U1 is running, it takes all of the bandwidth. My husband already posted something about limiting the bandwidth problems. What I am wondering though is if there is a way to get all my pictures backed up faster? I have been trying to back them up for about a week now. In 6 hours, it only backed up 115 files of over 3000, and that is using up all of our bandwidth.

Debian :: OpenJDK And Icedtea - Plugin Conflicts

Aug 29, 2011

I have the following packages of openjdk and icedtea installed.
i openjdk-6-jre - OpenJDK Java runtime, using Hotspot JIT
i openjdk-6-jre-headless - OpenJDK Java runtime, using Hotspot JIT (headless)
i openjdk-6-jre-lib - OpenJDK Java runtime (architecture independent libraries)
i icedtea-6-jre-cacao - Alternative JVM for OpenJDK, using Cacao
i A icedtea-6-jre-jamvm - Alternative JVM for OpenJDK, using JamVM

Now I am not a developer or anything just a user. My use-case are two :-
a. Running java programs on the desktop
b. Running java in the web-browser.

I *think* both of them get installed by default. Openjdk via the default-jre virtual package while icedtea due to some of the openjdk headless packages.
~$ aptitude why openjdk-6-jre
i default-jre Depends openjdk-6-jre (>= 6b23~pre8-2~)
~$ aptitude why icedtea-6-jre-jamvm
i openjdk-6-jre-headless Recommends icedtea-6-jre-jamvm (= 6b23~pre8-2)
~$ aptitude why openjdk-6-jre-headless
i openjdk-6-jre-lib Depends openjdk-6-jre-headless (>= 6b17)
$ aptitude why openjdk-6-jre-lib
i openjdk-6-jre-headless Depends openjdk-6-jre-lib (>= 6b23~pre8-2)

Notice the circular dependency at the end. From what I read the headless packages are basically for those systems where a server is running which does not have have a monitor, in which case I wonder why its installed in my system? My actual issue is of having the java for iceweasel. I did search for having java plugins and did not find anything except for icedtea-plugin to run java on my browser.

Trying to install it through gave conflicts :-
$ sudo aptitude install icedtea-plugin
[sudo] password for shirish:

The following NEW packages will be installed:
icedtea-netx{a} icedtea-plugin xulrunner-1.9.1{ab}
0 packages upgraded, 3 newly installed, 0 to remove and 4 not upgraded.
Need to get 8,642 kB/9,103 kB of archives. After unpacking 26.5 MB will be used.

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
openjdk-6-jre-headless: Conflicts: icedtea-netx (< 1.1.1-2~) but 1.1-1 is to be installed.
xulrunner-1.9.1: Depends: libmozjs2d (= 1.9.1.16-6) but 1.9.1.16-9 is installed.
The following actions will resolve these dependencies:

Keep the following packages at their current version:
1) icedtea-netx [Not Installed]
2) icedtea-plugin [Not Installed]
3) xulrunner-1.9.1 [Not Installed]

Accept this solution? [Y/n/q/?] q
Abandoning all efforts to resolve these dependencies.
Abort.

I did see the other solutions but most of them recommend downgrading both the openjdk and icedtea packages to the ones in testing rather than in unstable.

OpenSUSE :: 11.2 - Security Patch For Libfreebl3 Conflicts

Oct 27, 2010

I have SuSE 11.2. There is a security patch for Mozilla NSS Library. However, I get told by YaST that the libfreebl3-3241.noarch conflicts with mozilla-nspr.i586. (There's also a patch for glibc but apparently, it is not "willing" to install this without installing the other patch first). Anyway, I did the following: zypper lp and then rpm -qi libfreebl3 and then zypper lr -d.

Here are the results:
Code:
zypper lp
Repository 'Updates for openSUSE 11.2-0' is out-of-date. You can run 'zypper refresh' as root to update it.

Reading installed packages.....

Code:
zypper refresh

Repository 'Education' is up to date.
Repository 'Printing' is up to date.
Retrieving repository 'games' metadata [done]
Building repository 'games' cache [done]
Retrieving repository 'Updates for openSUSE 11.2-0' metadata [done]
Building repository 'Updates for openSUSE 11.2-0' cache [done]
Repository 'mozilla/openSUSE_11.2' is up to date.
Repository 'openSUSE-11.2-Non-Oss' is up to date.

All repositories have been refreshed. I don't know what to do. In order to update FireFox, (on Aug 1, 2010) I had to do as posted in this thread: (instructions by caf4926) Updating firefox. So, I followed these directions: ImageBam - Fast, Free Image Hosting and Photo Sharing. Now what do I do?

So, I googled about, and found this thread on a mythtv dev mailing list:
No Start with Pulse Audio (Changeset 20310) | MythTV | Dev
Apparently, the new mythtv .21-fixes is incorporating the .22 pulseaudio check. Myth checks for pulse and exits if it can't kill it. I had sound issues with 11.1 before, and tried to remove pulseaudio but created bigger headaches for myself by doing so. Interestingly, if you log into a mythtv session from the xdm, mythfrontend will run. So, pulse isn't loaded at the session level. But, I'd like some other workaround that allows me my normal desktop at the same time!!

Server :: Installing 32 Bit RPMs On 64 Bit - Conflicts With 64 Bit Packages

Aug 18, 2011

I'm using a 64 bit Linux server (OEL 6.1):

I was trying to install Oracle Database on this server that I realized the installer requires some 32 bit libraries. For instance it was looking for libXp.so.6 which existed under /usr/lib64, but not /usr/lib. Even when I changed the installation script to look into lib64 for the library, it failed with an error from Java that it needs 32 bit and instead has found 64 bit.

I downloaded a bunch of 32 bit RPM packages and when I tried to install them, I got the error that a newer version of those packages is installed, which is not the case. Cause all previously installed packages are 64 bit. I was wondering why it thinks that 64 bit packages are newer version of 32 bit packages. And is there a way to solve this?

Software :: Preventing Dependency Conflicts - CentOS 6

Aug 3, 2011

I've recently installed cacti on one of my servers and grimaced a bit when I had to install additional third-party yum repositories for CentOS 6. My question is, how does one go about preventing potential conflicts with certain dependencies overwriting key/critical dependencies relied upon from packages that might share them, i.e. apache? I understand yum priorities and have read the discussions regarding pros/cons from the threads involving one of the YUM maintainers. Since I need my servers to act as production-class equipment and, hence, be as reliable as they can, I'm always hesitant to allow yum to automate package upgrades when third-party repos are involved. How best to handle this?
