I'm wandering if it is possible to set up a partition on a laptop's HD so that if I use a USB cable between it and another device, the partition would appear as an external HD on the device.
Old Mac laptops used to have the option at boot-time of sharing the hardrive via firewire (they might still have it, have no clue) I'm looking for something similar, but on a laptop with Linux running on a different partition.
I can take apart my computer and fix a problem and then re-install the partitions. Hopefully I won't have to re-install, but I want to make backups just in case
-HP laptop with a windows (NTFS) and an Ubuntu (ext3) partition ~ 500GB total
-Iomega 1TB external hard drive partitioned into a 500GB NTFS storage, 250GH BLANK ext3 Linux Backup, and 250GB BLANK NTFS Windows Backup.
I want to copy my windows and linux to their respective 250GB spaces on the External HD.
1.) Can you direct me to places on the net that describes this in detail?
2.) Can I copy a partition while running that partition?
3.) Will copying C:/ in windows over to the external HD copy entire partition?
4.) Can I copy a Laptop partition to a external HD partition that is bigger?
5.) Do I have to use partition manager software or can I do this from terminal/cmd prompt?
I was transferring some files from my external USB hard drive onto my laptop (running 64bit Karmic), and my laptop froze up for whatever reason.Everything on the screen stopped and the Scroll Lock and Caps Lock LEDs began flashing.Not knowing anything else to do, I hard booted off with the power switch.At this point, I was concerned if anything on either hard rive would be damagedI booted my laptop back up, and all seemed well until I trued to open my Documents folder.For some reason, Ubuntu will no longer open any folders at allI can't click on ComputerDocuments, Music, etc. When I do, a tab opens in the taskbar that says Opening folder. It stays on screen for about 20 seconds, and then goes away and the folder never opens.The weird part is if I open gEdit and try to load a file, I can see and get to everything.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a DHCP/PXE server behind a firewall. It mounts partitions on the file server on the corp. network on the other side of the firewall. Every box that PXEs also mounts partitions on the main file server.
I was hoping I could change them to mount from the DHCP/PXE server, so that server could cache and cut down on the requests through the firewall, as well as the sessions that the firewall must track.But it seams a little strange to try to export directories that are simply NFS mounts on another server already.
seahorse export menu is always disabled. I need to export the passwords to restore it after formatting my machine.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to clone a Linux install to a different laptop. It's made a little complicated by two facts:
1) The 'new' laptop I'm trying to copy my Linux installation to is actually older and has a smaller hard drive then the computer I'm copying from
2) The computer I'm copying from has both a windows and Linux installation; I only care about the Linux partition.
I figured I would copy only the Linux partition from my primary computer to the laptop, sense the laptop doesn't have a large enough hard drive to copy everything. So I used the DD commands to copy SDA3 (main Linux partition) from my main computer to SDA2 of my laptop. When I came back a few hours later I was surprise to find my laptop trying to reboot itself (I never turned it off). It would keep starting to reboot, failing, and restarting itself. Not too surprising sense its boot partition wasn't changed so it's trying to boot into centos when I copied a redhat partition to it.
The problem is that when I used a redhat boot disk the rescue mode was unable to find a Linux partition to mount. /dev/sda2 exists, but trying to mount it gets the complaint "No such file or directory". "fdisk -l" lists sda1 (the boot sector) and sda2. Sda2 is the correct size and reports Linux LVM for its system. But "fdisk -l /dev/sda2" gives the error message "Disk /dev/sda2 doesn't contain a valid partition table" Did I not clone the drive correctly, or was an error caused due to the boot sector not being copied yet (the laptops boot sector is smaller then my old computers, so I can't copy from old computer to laptop)? Can I salvage the laptops partition table somehow, or do I have to repeat the cloning process? And if I do have to re-clone my computer can anyone tell me what I did wrong the first time so it works this time? I don't care if I copy just the Linux partition or both windows and Linux. Even though my main computer has a larger hard drive I'm only using about half of its available space so it should be possible to copy both partitions if I could ignore the unused sections of the harddrive.
Edit: I used DD to copy a tiny part of the Linux partition from my laptop so I could look at it. Most of it is illegible binary of course, but I scrolled through till I found some text right near the beginning:

So it seems that the DD command did copy everything over to the laptop, which is good to know. I noticed that it says device="/dev/sda3" right in the middle of the code I just posted. The Linux section of my original computer was SDA3 but I copied it to partition SDA2 of my laptop. So is the problem because the boot partition is for the wrong device? I don't suppose if I modified that one line to say SDA2 it would be able to load correctly? (Not that I know how I would modify the line, short of using the DD command again).
I have a laptop that has been connected to an external screen ever since i installed linux on it but i now wish to use it as a proper laptop but i when i run it without the external screen, the laptop screen goes blank after the initial boot splash screen. Is there a way to fix this?

When the laptop's lid is open - it works just fine When the laptop's lid is closed - the VGA output content is gone. i didn't find tin the monitors' menu nor in the power menu, an entry where I can ask or set the VGA output to be active all the time.

I've been wondering lately about what would be the best approach to take concerning WiFi on my laptop (or laptops in general) ? Understand my question concerning this is ONLY about performance and no other issue.
What is the better thing to do:
a) install a new (better) WiFi card inside my laptop,
b) remove the card inside my laptop and use a WiFi USB stick,
c) remove the card inside my laptop and use a WiFi PCMCIA card?
Is simply being external to the laptop going to give me better performance in terms of locating and using a WiFi connection? On the laptop I'm currently using I know that merely rotating the laptop can boost the connection signal strenght by 15% or more. So, I'm really wondering about this. btw, I'm seriously giving thought to glueing a 3 or 4 inch lenght of 1/2 inch pvc pipe to the lid of my laptop as a holder for a homebrew parabolic WiFi dish. The idea is to attach the USB WiFi stick to a piece of coat hanger wire. Then slide the bottom and top of the coat hanger wire into a piece of paper (that's had aluminum foil glued to it) forming a parabola behind the WiFi stick. By rotating the parabola in the pvc holder I can instantly directionalize the reception/transmission of the Wifi USB stick. I'm wondering if anyone in the forum has experienced the difference between an internal vs an external WiFi device? Secondarily, has anyone in the forum tried the parabola trick?
I would like to backup up my linux files to an external hard drive from a laptop. What would be the most simple and easiest way to do this? How would I format an external hard drive in linux.

I couldn't get the right resolution on the external screen (1920/1080) so I disconnected it and rebooted. Now there is only an "unknown" screen in the display menu. I have rewritten the xorg conf file per instructions for enabling GMA500 but to no avail - conf file looks right but screen is "unknown", low resolution and 4:3 aspect ratio, instead of 16:9. How to restore to laptop monitor - I think I can take from there to enable the right resolution.
View 4 Replies View RelatedThe laptop is a samsung X30 and i spent days trying to install ubuntu 10.04 unsuccesfully as there was no clear picture on the screen, just a black and purple splodge. I then saw a post on these forums discussing the default resolution of ubuntu and how it is incompatible with some machines so via VGA cable i connected it to my TV and sure enough i could see what was going on and finished the installation process. I assumed that once ubuntu was fully installed i would be able to change the resolution using the monitor preferences but none of them worked. View 2 Replies View RelatedI just installed it on my desktop. I love it so far, but I'm having trouble setting up a network in my apartment. I have the desktop directly plugged into my router and a mac laptop linked wirelessly to the router. I also have a printer and an external hard drive plugged into the desktop. The goal is to be able to access the external hard drive and use the printer from my mac laptop, as well as access the mac laptop from the desktop.
Right now, I can access the mac from the desktop with ubuntu on it. Under "Places" and then "Network," I can mount the folders I want and then access the contents.
I can also print and access my external hard drive from the ubuntu desktop.
However, on the mac laptop in the Finder under "Network" there is nothing. I can ping the desktop from the mac and get a response, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to get beyond this. In System Preferences I have "File Sharing" and "Printer Sharing" both checked.
I have been using Ubuntu for a while now on my netbook, however I have an older HP dv5 laptop that hasn't been used in a couple of years that I would like to format and install a linux distro on. Problem is that it has a very broken LCD screen and I had been previously using an external monitor with it. I had tried to install Ubuntu 9.04 on it at one point but could not progress very far into the installation due to the external monitor. I had also tried using the non-graphical installer but had little success with it as well.
I had thought of removing the HDD from the laptop and putting it into another of my laptops and installing it that way, but the specs are different between the two laptops and I figured that it would not work properly once the HDD was switched back to the older laptop. Is there any way to use an external monitor to install a newer version of Ubuntu? or perhaps is there another distro that is easily installed using an external monitor? My plan is to eventually remove the broken screen all together and only have the external monitor connected, the broken screen is a bit unsightly.
I am looking for a way to switch quickly and easily between my Laptop Display and my External Monitor, in Windows I had it configured so that when I plugged my Monitor in it would switch to that and when I removed it it would switch back to Laptop Display. From what I have tried it looks like this isn't possible with Linux, but I would like to get to the stage when I can click an icon to switch (or 1 to go to External and 1 to go to Laptop) My Laptop has an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4500 Series Graphics Card and I have so far noticed the following issues.
1. If I use the Gnome Monitors instead of ATI Catalist Control Centre it seams to cause some strange issues include confusing Linux on what the max screen res supported by my External Monitor is.
2. When I try and enable/Disable either Display or change Resolution, I am told that I have to reboot before the changes take affect.
I am running Debian 8.3, and I'm running Gnome 3.14.1.I have an external monitor plugged in with HDMI, and while Linux is loading both screens are on duplicate. Once the GUI kicks in, only the external screen works, so I have to enter my password blindly. Then, I open a terminal and run

I'm having the weirdest thing with F13. I HAD a HP 8430 with docking station and external 22" monitor. Worked well, using the RADEONHD drivers. Now I have a HP 8530p laptop. At startup, as soon as the login would show, the screen (both laptop lid and external display) go black. To resolve, I have to disconnect the DVI connector to be able to see the login screen. After initialization of the laptop display (showing login screen) I can connect the DVI connector again.
When I'm logged in and have the DVI connector connected again, I go to GNOME monitor preferences and see, besides my laptop display, my external display, not once but TWICE. if I enable the wrong one, my screen goes black again. If I enable the right one, my external display works as expected. I made sure that the monitor is connected only ONCE with DVI.
I'm using a freshly installed F13 with the default setup, so RADEONHD is being used. My laptop has the following video device (from lspci): 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Mobility Radeon HD 3650. The bad thing is I don't know where to go for analysis to get this fixed... any hints?
I have an HP Pavilion dv7-1243cl laptop. It has an internal wifi that works ok at home but when I'm traveling I stay at RV Campgrounds the wifi signal gets pretty weak. So I Installed an external antenna.(ALFA model AWUS036H). The signal gets a full 5 bars.
Now the problem. I dual boot OS11.3 and Windows 7 pro. Everything works as expected on MS. When In boot to OS11.3 I can only connect to the internal antenna. (real spotty). If I turn off the internal antenna I can't connect to the external one. Knetwork manager show/detects and shows the strength of both of the signals only when the internal is on. On MS7 I can turn off the internal and it will connect to the external one with no problem. Is there anyway to get OS to allow me to connect to my choice of antenna? I've been into manage connections and selected wlan1 (external). no joy.
I've been unable to connect an external monitor to my laptop running 10.04, even though the resolution and framerate are right. The monitor says something like "unsupported video settings".
In other news, I put the live cd into another computer which relies on a monitor and after the very first screen with the two logos at the bottom, the monitor decides to go to sleep. I try with another monitor and it just seems to have to feed. This is the more important problem, but I wonder if there isn't some built-in problem with 10.04.
I looked around the settings on Ubuntu and I cannot prevent sound from being played on my laptop speakers when external (more powerful) speakers are plugged in. Windows automatically defers all sound output to the external ones as soon as it is plugged in.

I want to plug my external monitor through my laptop's vga plug, close the lid and work on my monitor instead of the laptop's monitor. I looked through the gnome power management settings and when the laptop lid is closed it can only suspend, blank screen, hibernate or shutdown. I can plug my monitor and I have clone displays and it works fine but I can' find a way to shutdown the laptop screen without shutting down the vga outlet. Its a brand new Acer aspire 5734Z with a 15,6 inches screen (wich is why I want to plug in my 19 inches monitor and work on bigger screen)

I was not able to see the computers in my network then I fixed it I can see them but when I try to browse the files the OS tells me that is unable to mount location and failed to retrieve share list from server. The funny part is that if I go to Places>Connect to server and type my mybook ip address, my laptop can connect and I can browse the files. I really dont know what is the problem. My firewall is down so I dont think that is the problem. If anyone can help me with these because I know im able to connect to my mybook but i am unable to connect to any other laptop or my WD-Tv live.
