I've used dd to make iso's of dvd's before, but it's been a while. I usually run into the same problem where it errors out about 300-500 MB into the disc. I've tried adding bs=2048 to the command, but no dice. I checked my history file but for some reason I can't find the entries that successfully copied dvds.
What options should I choose? My typical command is:
dd if=/dev/dvd of=/home/me/dvd/title.iso bs=2048

I'm trying to find out which application will copy DVD discs (video and data) in raw mode. Something that works for DVDs like cdrdao works for CDs. I tried using cdrdao but it errors out because the DVD disc is too big for it. I tried looking at Brasero but I can't tell if it offers a raw option. I see that Brasero lets you copy a DVD to a RAW image, then burn the RAW image back to a DVD-R. If Brasero uses RAW mode to do a direct copy, this would essentially do the same thing, but I can't tell if that is what it does. But, I think this will work.

I went under the Misc tab and selected errr, something like "Begin multisession DVD" (french menu) but then, the DVD is not recognized as a multisession. I have less than 700 MB written on 2 Phillips DVDs.

Indeed, Dragon starts to play the DVD. However, the image is distorted and you can't recognize anything... This is what the terminal messages say when I start Dragon over the terminal:

Decided to rip my collection of 400-ish DVDs. The computer has four different DVD players attached from different manufacturers. Ubuntu 64 bit, patched. Some DVDs appear, "corrupted," in the form of green blocks or sometimes white lines. It can be a part of a DVD (like a special feature track) or a whole DVD. It can also be a single DVD in a box set of five or six. Also, sometimes it won't pick up some of the special features tracks so they're not even visible in Handbrake ... although in VLC they are visible but also, won't play. However, the "corrupt" DVDs work fine in my one remaining Windows machine, and also in a commercial DVD player. Just not in Ubuntu.
And when I mean not in Ubuntu, I mean anything on any of the four DVD readers. It is as if there is a genuine problem reading the tracks; that's how the errors come back; read errors. One of the worst was Constantine. I thought it was a corrupt DVD at first and bought a second copy, but that did the same thing so that's how I worked out that it just didn't get on well with Ubuntu ... and then I found other DVD's started doing the same. This feels like it is affecting between 1 in 10, or 1 in 20 DVDs, thereabouts. So far my solution is to use the Windows machine to rip the VOBs off the trouble DVD's and then transfer to Linux to Handbrake them.
I just installed 10.04 and am pleased w/ things, for the most part.
However, I cannot get a DVD disc to play (a movie, for instance) or be recognized unless I shut down the system and restart (provided I have already launched a Web video, or something). The DVD-ROM is dead to the world as far as disc recognition goes.
Things were just great in Karmic so this is completely confusing to me.
Does anyone have a fix?
so iv installed all of the nessesary drivers and decoders to run DVDs on my Ubuntu machine but whenever i pop in a movie that was not copied it doesn't play. This perplexes me because whenever i put a burned DVD into the drive it finds it right away. how to play legit copies of DVDs?

It is strange to find that none of the three systems play VCD, when I use Totem, Totem-xine, Gxine or VLC media player, even with the codecs updated. Worse, each of the three DVD players then act in a loop, seeking the LG DVD-RAM drive endlessly. But the drives otherwise work very well and I also write DVDs and CDs often.I have tested the VCDs in Windows machines with VLC media player, and the VCDs work wonderfully. This is kind of strange. So I thought may be I should report this.

Only one of them has the following problem: When I use my Sandisk Cruzer USB-stick (FAT32 formatted), copying is extremely slow. Also, the taskbarpanel notifier does not show a progressbar or a cancel button during copying. It only shows that is copying but I can not cancel. On the other two computers, the same stick works ok. View 1 Replies View RelatedI bought an 8GB flash drive because my D drive doesn't read DVDs. Anyway, my goal is to install Linux ubuntu and have it be my OS (replacing Windows XP). Last night I went to the Ubuntu homepage and downloaded the Ubuntu desktop edition 32-bit and put it on my flash drive. I followed the instructions on how to open and run it, but I was never asked about whether I want Linux to run side by side with Windows or if I want it to replace Windows. It downloaded the whole program, my computer restarted and then (on a black screen) it asked if I wanted to use Windows XP Home Edition or Linux Ubuntu. It's really frustrating because it took a while to download and install it in the first place AND to top that off, when I tried to use Ubuntu it went to a black screen and at the top said that there was an error. So I uninstalled all the ubuntu program and software and now I have a clean slate and want to try this again. I am a complete n00b. Could someone please walk me through how I can go about downloading (w/ links plz), installing and making ubuntu my ONLY OS on my computer via a flash drive? I'm desperate and I don't want to go through all of that and make the same mistake again!

The problem started however when I installed Skype which uses pulseaudio. As soon as I start skype (or any other application that uses pulse, HoN for example) the applications sound output or input does not work at all. It worked for a while and then I turned on Shift Switcher and a message popped up saying..."The new value for the button binding for the action Terminate in plugin Shift Switcher conflicts with the action Zoom Window of the Scale Addons plugin. Do you wish to disable Zoom Window in the Scale Addons plugin?" I was given the option of Set Terminate anyway, Don't set Terminate, and Disable Zoom Window. I clicked Don't set Terminate and ever since the only thing that works in compiz are the bindings in the general options. I've used synaptic to completely remove and then reinstall compiz but the problem persist. Something else weird, all of the changes I made are still there, even after complete removal, but they don't work?

View 8 Replies View RelatedI just recently (about an hour ago) installed Ubuntu Netbook edition on my old laptop, and I was greeted with the message, that unity could not be run due to some sort of missing driver...fair enough, I was then greeted with the default Ubuntu desktop, I installed all my needed software (wine, google chrome) and installed the missing display drivers. I then rebooted the system, and once again I am stuck with the default desktop, and not the Unity interface. I checked the software center, and it says Unity IS in fact installed.. And yet I cannot make it appear. So now I ask you Ubuntu veterans. How do I make it work?
P.S. I wiped the system of windows, and the computer is an old HP Pavilion DV6000

This was a big problem since I use Skype a lot to talk to freinds and family out of country.I fixed it by removing and re-installing Alsa but this may not be a problem for people installing from the final release ISO.here are the commands you need to run

My atl gr key often doesnt work. Since I have an azerty lay-out, I often need this key (fi for typing @).

I cannot log on. I don't know if this is related, I was setting up for remote desktop, setup a password for the remote session. After rebooting, my normal user and password do not work and my rdp password does not work.
View 13 Replies View RelatedI have a motherboard Gigabyte H110M-H DDR3 1.0 and a VGA Nvidia NVS 300 (It doesn't have HDMI connector, but after Debian installation, it shows audio HDMI), After installling Debian 8.4 Jessie amd64, I noticed the sound doesn't work, the motherboard audio codec is a Realtek ALC887, I don't have a HDMI Monitor, nor my VGA has HDMI Connector, but is a little bit strange that Debian recognizes HDMI Audio, if a run "# cat /proc/asound/cards" it shows me two audio cards, the HDMI and the ALC887 and if I run "# cat /procs/asound/modules", both cards are using snd_hda_intel. It is installed PulseAudio and Pavucontrol, I have checked if the audio was muted, but the sound volume is set to 100%, I don't know what to do anymore... I have a computer with a realtek codec too, but it's another model ALC665 or something like that, and the system is equipped with an ATI HD 5450 with HDMI Audio, I have checked the what modules the Debian is using, and both uses the snd_hda_intel, but the sound works with HDMI and Realtek Codec.

I just installed KDE through gruoinstall command on my F12. I can't use the vertical scroll bar on the touchpad of my laptop. Also I wanted to change the shortcut to window menu. It's Alt+F3 whereas I am comfortable to Alt+Space like in GNOME.
View 6 Replies View Relatedi just installed fedora 12 on my computer. installation went perfect, even tweaked it a little bit and everything works; except for flash player. i installed it by following some guide and i can watch videos vids and all, but sometimes the videos video player doesn't respond to my mouse. i can click on play/pause but it gives no response whatsoever; i can click on the sound but it gives no response whatsoever. sometimes it all works perfectly, but when i click on the next vid it suddenly doesn't respond anymore.
